Chapter 2: Crossing Swords
Narrated by Mercury.
~Content Warning: mentions of death throughout~
Narrator: “Lodden News: A major building has collapsed on New Wing Island. 12 killed, 17 injured. Some workers are still buried underneath.”
Narrator: “The Lodden government quickly launched a rescue effort. The accident is likely caused by illegal construction underground.”
Narrator: “Our reporter contacted Mercury Group that is responsible for the construction, but so far no response.”
Narrator: In the empty conference room, a video of the collapsed New Wing Island project played on a big screen.
Narrator: The giant dust cloud that rose when the building collapsed took up most of the screen amid screams from workers on scene.
Narrator: The locals’ panic turned to outrage.
Narrator: They demanded the responsible party to come forward, while rumors ran rampant of an underground base.
Choose either “Did you win New Wing Island in an auction?” or “How did the accident happen?”
If “auction,” ...
You: Did you win New Wing Island in an auction?
Narrator: Yes.
If “accident,” ...
You: How did the accident happen?
Narrator: It was a matter of time.
--
Narrator: It shouldn’t be a surprise.
Choose either “How are you going to explain this to the residents of the island?” or “Is there a secret base underneath New Wing Island?”
If “how,” ...
You: How are you going to explain this to the residents of the island?
Narrator: That’s none of my business.
If “base,” ...
You: Is there a secret base underneath New Wing Island?
Narrator: That’s none of your business.
--
Narrator: I muted the video. The black cat was still sleeping soundly on my lap.
Narrator: There was a knock on the door. My secretary walked in with papers and bowed.
Secretary: We found out what happened, sir.
Secretary: You were right. The engineer who carried out the operation once worked for the Winslet Group. They’re behind it.
Secretary: We got the guy before Winslet’s people could silence him.
Mercury: You know what to do, right?
Secretary: Yes.
Narrator: The secretary left the room and dialed the phone in the hallway.
Secretary: Hello, is this the chief editor of “Lodden News”?
Narrator: Public opinion is so much mightier than the sword, and one you can exploit.
Narrator: People will flock to the bigger news like moths to a brighter flame.
Narrator: With the semi-opaque glass keeping noises out, only a black cat’s purring could be heard in the enormous conference room.
Narrator: A few days later, the masses have been completely swayed.
Narrator: Every news feed on every phone and every headline was about the New Wing Island incident.
Narrator: But the Winslet Group was now the culprit.
Narrator: The latest investigation revealed that the engineer responsible for the accident actually works for the Winslet Group.
Narrator: The furious comments denounced Winslet as a murderer.
Narrator: The phones in all major Mercury offices, meanwhile, never stopped ringing.
Narrator: The secretary responded to the media in an organized fashion and cut off unnecessary lines.
Narrator: But soon his phone received a clip of an interview.
Narrator: I let him play it.
Narrator: Winslet’s face took up the entire screen.
Narrator: His face scrunched, bloated, and flushed with red, with blue veins popping out of his neck.
Narrator: Poor overwrought puppet.
President Winslet: This is nonsense! It’s slander! I’ve been framed!
President Winslet: We will find out who’s the real culprit!
President Winslet: We won’t let this tarnish our name. We’ll make sure the true mastermind is brought to justice!
President Winslet: I’ll expose you, Mercury! Everyone will see the real you!
Narrator: The secretary turned the phone off. Winslet’s voice vanished.
Secretary: That was a press conference held by Mr. Winslet. He denied the accusations and believes we framed him.
Secretary: Moreover, he’s seeking alliances with other corporations to try to turn the table back on us.
Secretary: Also...
Mercury: Keep going.
Narrator: The secretary leaned closer and whispered into my ear.
Secretary: We intercepted someone trying to sneak into our building this morning.
Mercury: Found out who that was?
Secretary: Of course. Someone with the Winslet Group, looking to assassinate you.
Narrator: That makes it third time this month.
Narrator: I rose from my chair.
Narrator: The black cat stopped grooming itself and arched its back, then quickly plopped down again.
Secretary: Should we send someone...
Narrator: I calmly watered the roses on the desk.
Narrator: Time ticked by slowly.
Narrator: The red flowers seemed inviting.
Narrator: Sunlight showered the roses through the window, as beads of water glided down their sides.
Narrator: The distant buildings of New Wing Island cast large shadows under the sun.
Mercury: Send them an invitation.
Mercury: I’m throwing the most lavish party at the Lodden Hotel. Make sure Winslet is invited.

I think a lot about how I could fix Crossing Swords because it’s a good example of a show with a fun premise (and lovely art style) but poor execution (it’d literally be 100 times better if it dialed the sex jokes down to half at least, a few are fine but it’s just juvenile and bogs the show down).
Part of my changes would add a couple new characters, one a new mainstay because I like the idea that Knights all have a bard assigned to sing of their heroics. The knights, because they fucking hate Patrick, assign bard Rosemary (above) to him, because they think she’s not a kissass and they hate her too. (She’s actually a very lovely person but is wholly ready to call anyone out for being a dick. And lets face it, all the knights are dicks. She’s also a big fan of regicide). Sometimes a newbie bard who Rosemary took under her wing comes along (he was halfheartedly assigned to Broth because he’s an excessively cheery young man they’re both annoyed by and mildly scared of). We don’t see him often because he’s usually carried away by some animal or beastie. But he always always comes back by the end unscathed. So everyones a little freaked out by him.
I think this would start where S2 left off, with the big war. That’d die down early season and we could episodically run into some new things. I’d expand a little more on the fantasy elements. I know they want to go for a crapsack and gross medieval world but when you also add a wizard, dragons, and fairies and shit I think we can allow for a little more of the fantastical.
I’ll note I would NOT change the stop motion obviously. I think the style is gorgeous, the animation is lovely, and it gives the show it’s own identity. I just like to draw them like this/

US cover reveal: SWORDCROSSED
are we readyyyyyyyyyyy
Illustration by Cynthia Sheppard, art direction by Christine Foltzer. Yes those are RED SPRAYED EDGES and yes this is a ROMANCE CLINCH.
High heat. Low stakes. Sharp steel.
Mattinesh Jay, dutiful heir to his struggling family business, needs to hire an experienced swordsman to serve as best man for his arranged marriage. Sword-challenge at the ceremony could destroy all hope of restoring his family’s wealth, something that Matti has been trying—and failing—to do for the past ten years.
What he can afford, unfortunately, is part-time con artist and full-time charming menace Luca Piere.
Luca, for his part, is trying to reinvent himself in a new city. All he wants to do is make some easy money and try to forget the crime he committed in his hometown. He didn’t plan on being blackmailed into giving sword lessons to a chronically responsible—and inconveniently handsome—wool merchant like Matti.
However, neither Matti’s business troubles nor Luca himself are quite what they seem. As the days count down to Matti’s wedding, the two of them become entangled in the intrigue and sabotage that have brought Matti’s house to the brink of ruin. And when Luca’s secrets threaten to drive a blade through their growing alliance, both Matti and Luca will have to answer the question: how many lies are you prepared to strip away, when the truth could mean losing everything you want?
