flakes of ash drifting down from the sky

Smoke obscured his vision of the mountains. The sky was dark with ash, and the ground hot with embers, the stalks of sunflowers like a smoldering carpet. Disorientation swarmed him incessantly, following his quick, aimless steps with all the hungry stubbornness of circling vultures, carrion birds waiting for his inevitable collapse. He needed somewhere to wait out the fire, but the miasma was thick and the field was infinite, featureless and eternal, all landmarks blotted out with a single swipe of a hasty torch.

He lost sight of Syd long ago, and hoped desperately that her disappearance meant she’d woken up. One red eye fluttered aimlessly in the mountains, the phantom breeze and smell of pine when he focused on it a torturous relief in the sea of embers. Far away, it was as lost as he was, surrounded in turn by pale white fog and endless forest, an antonymous Hades.

Stumbling through the cloying heat and smoke, his thoughts themselves clouded, and bitterly wondered how long it had taken Syd to forget him, to forget her entire former life, to know nothing but endless sunflowers and isolation. He’d been too late, but by how much – weeks, months, nearly a year? Had the last vestiges of his face slipped her memory just hours ago, just minutes before he arrived at her door, leaving only the faintest dreams of his eyes, forever watching? Forever just an abstraction, frightening, sometimes comforting? He promised he would follow her out, but if he didn’t, would she forget those dreams too, upon waking up?

Then, rising up from the fire was the cottage, miraculously unburned, eerily lived-in, so unlike the empty shack he’d found once upon a time, in a field of sunflowers with their heads all turned down, out on his way to the mountains. Somehow, he’d made his way back here, circled back to where he’d began, to this prison in an ocean of sunflowers, his own personal Alcatraz.

Somewhere out there, there was a shack in a sunflower field, where the leaves scratched his arms and legs like mites crawling against his skin and the breeze blew his hair directly into his mouth and the blissful vespertine air would chill him to the bone. There was a shack that creaked noisily as it settled on its barely-finished foundations, and cobwebs were strung in every corner. Once upon a time, it was built to be a place of healing, a place of rest crafted by a person whose hands only knew how to create prisons. Funny how that works, right?

He’s barely able to close the door behind him before the pain finally hits, the soles of his feet blistered and burned, headache pounding against his temples with the fervent energy of Athena, breaking free from her father’s skull, nausea boiling up in his gut, dizziness curling like heat distortion at the corners of his vision. The force of his knees hitting the ground barely registers, and he collapses to the ground before he can make it to the couch.
