Bizarre 1960 exploitation flick The Leech Woman opens with a married couple bitterly arguing. Suave Dr Paul Talbot (Phillip Terry) cruelly taunts his haggard alcoholic wife June (Coleen Gray) with a glass of whiskey. “I’m not used to seeing you sober this time of day!” he sneers. “If you’re trying to humiliate me, you did that years ago,” June snarls in response. “Everybody knows I drink; I don’t try to hide it.” June is a decade older than Paul. She’s tried plastic surgery; it didn’t help and now she’s threatening divorce. (We know June is a villainess because she’s wearing one of those Cruella de Vil-style fox fur stoles with the heads attached). “I think I like you better when you’re sloppy drunk and violent,” Paul laughs. “That’s the real you and that’s the one I like. The one that hates me and gives me a chance to hate back!” “Here’s to you, whiskey – the guardian of all frustrated wives!” June sneers. But after slugging it back, she pleads, “Why can’t I have another one for the road? Just enough to make me numb.” Soon their dysfunctional marriage-made-in hell is blown apart by the arrival of Paul’s enigmatic new patient, an ancient-looking woman called Malla (Estelle Helmsley) – who claims the witch doctors in her ancestral African tribe (the Nandos!) know the secret to restoring youth and beauty! Before long, Paul and June are plunged into voodoo rituals – and human sacrifice!

No one believed me, or in me, about my parents sucking and wanting to be more and do something, so I decided to prove I could be something else and it came in the shape of saying fuck you to all the laws I didn't vibe with. Thought I could get away with anything, taking what I felt I deserved as "compensation" for what I went through and how I was treated.
