A beast can never be as cruel as a human being, so artistically, so picturesquely cruel.

i love king lindworm as a story and get so frustrated with so many modern attempts to retell it because like they're good stories but they're not This story. is king lindworm a story about love? not really. is it a story about justice? revenge? not really. king lindworm is a story about being born a monster and knowing from birth that you are something repulsive and unwanted. the lindworm desires not to be human but to be wed before its younger brother. the lindworm wants to at least be granted the birthright of its seniority if it can have nothing else. his intended wives find him too monstrous to love and the maiden who comes after them does not do it out of love. she does not trick him out of his skin because she wants to love him but because she wants the monster gone. there are few versions where the lindworm wants to be human, few stories where the lindworm has a choice. would the lindworm still be wed without his humanity? can the lindworm still be loved? does the blame rest heavier on the shoulders of the unwanted son than it does on those who brought him into the world and loathed him for being in it? i am feeling normal about the lindworm.

The Beast Below & Kill The Moon as Foils
The interesting thing to me about The Beast Below and Kill the Moon as episodes is that they operate on a very similar concept: there is a living (very BIG) thing that functions as the only thing that keeps large swathes of humanity safe/alive and they both end with a bit of a cop-out where that Thing stays right where it is but how the themes of those episodes are WILDLY different based on how the Doctor&Companiok interactions play out.
The Beast Below is an exploration of how the Doctor does what is necessary, what he thinks is right and kindest to the most number of people, but that sometimes he is wrong, incredibly wrong, and that it is very essential for him to listen to his companions, to give them a choice, and also that at the end of the day, the Doctor is the Star Whale, he is lonely and pained and kind, that this is the ethos of the show: the Doctor is kind but he really needs to be stopped and reminded of it sometimes (really great parallels with the end of the Runaway Bride/Fires of Pompeii, in a way).
But Kill the Moon is all about how the Doctor is right. How he will always be right. That he knows better than his companions, that he always holds all the cards, that he is cruel to teenage girls and tells them they're not special and knew all along what was going to happen but didn't tell his companion just to see what she would do, but her decision didn't matter at the end of the day, not to him, not to the problem at hand, because the Doctor knows everything and is right and God, disregarding the other major problems with this episode it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth in comparison to the Beast Below. That in this episode, the Doctor is not a god that needs to be reminded of his humanity but a god that is cruel and all-knowing and somehow right in that. I've talked about how the Beast Below embodies the ethos of Doctor Who to me; Kill the Moon, at least in how the Doctor acts, feels like the opposite.

i think that like… the host by bong joon ho should be required reading (watching) for dungeon meshi fans. not out of a disrespect for dunmeshi lovers bc it really is so so good i just think that if you liked dunmeshi the host is something with like similarly important themes of eating and being hungry and survival. i am not a guy who watches movies often so maybe this sounds a little hollow but like the host by bong joon ho is like. one of the best films ever maybe. unparalleled
#if you read dungeon meshi you also likely will not find the gore and monster and all too big a hurdle to clear as well#not that it’s even really a monster in the classic way. i think about that thing so often it’s so interesting and it’s a beautiful creature#horrific sure but well. beautiful nonetheless. in the way nature is horrifying yet beautiful at times#and i think it is really wonderful how the creature is given dignity. you know? the creature is not the actual monster of the film. it sl#simply a byproduct of cruelty and a disregard for any life whatsoever including humans by the american military.#the creature has as much right to live as everyone else. the creature is simply hungry. but so is everyone else and so too does everyone#else have the right to live. and so the creature dies. as it must. but it was never so different from anything else#it is not the fault of the creature that it was born and it is not the fault of the creature that it is used as a way for the us government#to meddle in the affairs of another country and exert control over it. the creature simply lives a#and the creature simply dies.#god what a good movie. i love you gwoemul#also the creature is not actually that large a part of the movie like i think there is far more analysis to be done of the situation#surrounding the creature than there is analysis of the creature itself. but i think about the creature the most often. and what it#represents and again the dignity they give it. it is something other monster movies simply do not allow their beasts.

thinking about zazievash again…
Tumblr media
like. I don’t think zazie understands Vash’s self hatred. it’s so alien to them, that Vash would try so hard to be something he’s not and then feel genuine agony at the fact that he’s just pretending.
Zazie pretends to be human all the time! They think it’s funny, and it’s occasionally useful. But they’re not torn up about the fact that they’re a collection of worms in a human skin suit/a planet.
So one of the things they and Vash butt heads about is that Vash keeps insisting on trying to be a Person when they both know that Vash…isn’t. Zazie doesn’t understand it at all.
//I love you because you’re not human. I love you because you’re something Else. I love you for who you are.//
It’s just enough like Knives’s love that it freaks Vash the fuck out, but just enough to the left that he doesn’t, like, ruin everything. Because Zazie loves that Vash loves people.
How couldn’t they? They’re not in the business of lying to themselves about the man they’re in love with. They think it’s a little silly, sometimes, that Vash feels so torn between humanity and Plants, because there’s nothing that says Vash /has/ to pick a side.
And that’s the greatest gift they can give vash in the absence of actual understanding. Acceptance that he’ll never pick a side.

Beauty and the Beast has its roots in the tragic story of a so-called wild man. Afflicted by rare medical condition, he and his family were used to entertain royalty and treated like court pets.

Truly Tamlin should’ve been full beast mode the whole time in Acotar. Everyone else having masks would’ve been fine but Tamlin as the ‘reason’ for the curse should’ve been a beast the whole time it would’ve added so much flavor to the symbolism in it and Feyre falling in love with him.
Also yes me posting this was inspired by my last reblog lmao

Cruelty & A Beast - In-SooxHunter
A discussed starter based on the unfortunate events between In-Soo and Maxim! A hospital visit preceding Invidia’s that will follow soon for @mpinsoo
⚜️
Hunter had rumors about it and seen some vicious squabbles online between people regarding it. His best friend Invidia had recounted all the sides he had heard himself and it had sounded awful from all that he had learned.
But even with all the warning he had been given, nothing was adequate preparation for the sight of a face he knew laid up in the hospital bed. Harsh and ugly light frames the scene of the sleeping form of In-Soo there; IVs and bruises marring the beauty of his serene dormant state just a bit. What horrors had happened that hadn’t been spoken of due to a gentle politeness that he knew the other often carried?
He hovers at the door for a few more seconds, unsure, then enters quietly. In his hands are small gifts to help pass the time for In-so and to brighten up the otherwise drab room. A small arrangement of bright colored flowers bewitched to stay in their bloom and a small device loaded with books that Hunter and Invidia had painstaking plucked from a massive online inventory based on asking around about what might delight In-soo and things that brought the pair of them joy to read. These friendship offerings he sets down on the little table near the bed before he moves to sit himself in a chair that is brought near.
“Friend?” He tries softly, careful in volume as not to startle him and in an effort not to jostle his body as it heals. “In-Soo? Is there still sleeping dust magics in those eyes of yours?”
