chanukah !!
chanukah is coming up! it’s a jewish holiday (can be seen spelled several different ways such as “hanukkah”) that commemorates jewish resistance to assimilation.
Tumblr media
in the second century bce, judea, the land where jewish people’s ancestors resided, were subjected to pressure from the greeks to accept their culture and beliefs (during this period, judea was ruled by the seleucids, which are the syrian-greeks).
you may have not heard of antiochus IV, the successor of alexander the great, who conquered judea (along with syria and egypt). while alexander allowed the people under his control to continue observing their religious traditions, antiochus was much more oppressive. he massacred jews and prohibited the practice of judaism, as well as requiring the sacrifice of pigs at the holy temple (pigs aren’t kosher and therefore it is sacrilegious to sacrifice them).
a jewish army led by judah the maccabee revolted against the assimilation of hellenistic jews and the oppression of the seleucid greek government. they miraculously defeated the seleucid army and drove them off the land. jews reclaimed the holy temple in jerusalem and “rededicated” it (as it was desecrated by the seleucids). the word chanukah means “dedication” because of this event.
it is said that when the jewish people went to light the temple’s menorah, they only find one cruse of olive oil that was untouched by the seleucids. thus, they let the menorah with that one-day supply and it lasted for eight days. this story gives reasoning as to why we light our chanukah candle on the chanukiah (a 9-branched menorah)* every night for eight nights. it’s also why chanukah is also known as the festival of lights.
so today, other than lighting the candles, we also eat foods that are fried in oil such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts). another popular tradition is to play with the dreidel, which is a (typically wooden) four-sided spinning top, with a hebrew letter on each side (נ‎, ג‎, ה‎, ש‎; nun, gimel, hey, and shin). each letter represents an action that the spinner has to do. it’s sort of a gambling game and typically uses chocolate gelt (those chocolate coins covered in gold foil) as currency.
Tumblr media
* why are they 9 branches when we light the candles for eight night? because the ninth candle is in the middle and known as the shamash, or the heper candle. it is the candle that is lit first and used to light the other candle. each night’s new candle is added from right to left, while we light them from left to right.

It is a happy way of soothing sorrow when we can feel, "He cares for me." Christian, do not dishonor religion by always wearing a brow of care; come, cast your burden upon your Lord. You are staggering beneath a weight that your Father would not feel. What seems to you a crushing burden would be to Him but as the small dust of the balance. Nothing is so sweet as to
Lie passive in God's hands,
And know no will but His.
O child of suffering, be patient; God has not passed you over in His providence. He who is the feeder of sparrows will also furnish you with what you need. Do not sit in despair; hope on, hope ever. Take up the arms of faith against a sea of trouble, and your opposition shall yet end your distresses. There is One who cares for you. His eye is fixed on you, His heart beats with pity for your woe, and His omnipotent hand shall bring you the needed help. The darkest cloud shall scatter itself in showers of mercy. The blackest gloom shall give place to the morning. He, if you are one of His family, will bind up your wounds and heal your broken heart. Do not doubt His grace because of your tribulation, but believe that He loves you as much in seasons of trouble as in times of happiness. What a serene and quiet life might you lead if you would leave providing to the God of providence!
With a little oil in the cruse and a handful of meal in the barrel, Elijah outlived the famine, and you will do the same. If God cares for you, why do you need to care too? Can you trust Him for your soul and not for your body? He has never refused to bear your burdens; He has never fainted under their weight. Come, then, soul! Say good-bye to anxiety and leave all your concerns in the hand of a gracious God.

The 8-day Jewish celebration known as #Hanukkah or #Chanukah begins today
The story:
2000 years ago the land of Israel was part of the Syrian-Greek Empire. Antiochus III, the King of Syria and his son Seleucus oppressed the Jews in the land of Israel.
That time, the Jewish Hellenists (Jews who accepted idol-worship and the Syrian-Greek way of life), while a tiny minority, have been amplified by the Greeks as they tokenized themselves against the Jewish people’s right to live as free people and as their own Jewish identity in the land of our ancestors (anti-Zionist Jews).
One day the henchmen of Antiochus arrived in the village of Modiin where Mattityahu, the old priest, lived. He built an altar and demanded that Mattityahu offer sacrifices to the Greek gods. Mattityahu refused.
One Hellenistic Jew approached the altar to offer a sacrifice, but Mattityahu stopped him and destroyed the altar.
Mattityahu knew that Antiochus would be enraged so he fled together with his sons and friends to the hills of Judea.
Many courageous Jews joined them and formed a rebellion. Before his death, Mattityahu called his sons together and urged them to continue to fight. In waging warfare, he said, their leader should be Judah the Strong. Judah was called "Maccabee," a word composed of the initial letters of the four Hebrew words מי כמכה באלים ה׳, "Who is like You, O God.”
Later, Antiochus sent his General Apolonius to wipe out Judah and his followers, the Maccabees. An army consisting of more than 40,000 men swept the land.
When Judah the Maccabee heard it, he said: "Let us fight unto death in defense of our souls and our Temple!"
The war was won and the Maccabees returned to Jerusalem, entered the Temple and cleared it of the idols placed by the Syrian vandals.
Since the golden Menorah had been stolen by the Syrians, the Maccabees now made one of cheaper metal.
There was only a small cruse of pure olive oil, which was sufficient to light only for one day. Yet, it continued to burn for 8 days. In the memory of the miracle, our sages appointed these eight days for annual thanksgiving and for lighting candles

Ruixiong Saves Christmas/My Brother’s Keeper
Tumblr media
"Really, guys, I mean it! How good of a Santa Claus can I be if I'm keeping you from celebrating your Jewish Christm-"
Tumblr media
"CHANAKUH IS NOT JEWISH CHRISTMAS!"
Tumblr media
"AIYAA, I’M SORRY!!"
Tumblr media
"...... sorry, Ruixiong. It's not at all a holiday to celebrate the birth of any deity or whatnot, it's not even any of our most important holidays throughout the year. We can’t even call it a ‘holiday’ like Christians would for Christmas or somesuch. That would go to that like Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot...”
Tumblr media
"It's the commemoration of the recovery of Judea and the rededication of the Second Temple after which the Maccabees revolted against the Seleucid Empire. You see, the Maccabees rose against Antiochus IV Epiphanes, which at the time was imposing conversion into Hellenism, According to the Talmud, the Temple then had to be purified, which enta-."
Tumblr media
".............."
Tumblr media
"....It's a victory against the Greeks by the Jews, and our Temple was taken back and purified."
Tumblr media
"OHH!! So a war victory and reaffirmation of your people!! Like if the Han would have succeeded against the Manchus and resisted forced cultural imposition!"
Tumblr media
"....You know what, sure. We'll go with that."
Tumblr media
"So what's with the importance of the candles?"
Tumblr media
"Oh! That's due to the Miracle of the cruse of oil as the Temple of Jerusalem.
Tumblr media
As the Maccabees searched for pure oil to light the menorah with, they found just one cruse of pure oil which still had the seal of the High Priest, the symbol of pure oil. This cruse contained just enough pure oil to keep the menorah lit for one day. In order to make pure oil however, individuals making the oil must be in a state of spiritual purity. Being soldiers returning from the battlefield, the Maccabees were deemed impure, and therefore could not make pure oil. Since the process of ritual purification after touching a corpse lasts seven days, the Maccabees could only produce additional pure oil after eight days: seven days of becoming pure including one day, once pure, to actually make the oil. Therefore, the Maccabees would have been unable to light the Menorah for seven days before the completion of new pure oil. Miraculously, the one cruse of oil had lasted for all eight days, and by that point new pure oil was ready.
Tumblr media
"So there are some rituals to the lighting of the menorah, for certain, but eh. Guy and I and are terrible Jews for not even attending any sermons for Lord knows how long. We can look up what to do if we miss out on lighting any candle."
Tumblr media
"So it still needs some kind of pri- I mean rabbi to provide any input?"
Tumblr media
"Not necessarily. It can just be Phoebus and I."
Tumblr media
"Well, let me join you! I am absolutely all about war victories and the resistance against conquerors! In fact, I think it'd be great if all of us join you! Especially the Captain, who HATES conquerors!"
Tumblr media
The brothers briefly exchange glances before Guy speaks on their behalf. "...................No thank you, Ruixiong. We really would rather just have it be the two of us."
Tumblr media
"Wh-..... are you afraid I might fuck something up? Is it one of those 'Jews Only' rules like with your Passover?"
Tumblr media
"N-no. We just- .... Look. Hannakuh is much more personal for the two of us than just a celebration of the Temple of Jerusalem, or as a war victory. All the more if we are having to involve Josep or even Giovanni beyond cooking for us. If we are to invite everyone to our celebration, we'll have to include them and we really don't want that."
Tumblr media
"Wh-... why not??? Was it something they did? Was this before Rashid and I joined your Crew? Did this happen in the Magellan Expedi-"
Tumblr media
"Please stop asking anymore questions. It's nothing personal against them in particular. Even they understand. Please drop it, Ruixiong. Can we get moving so we can go home?"
Tumblr media
"We still have to get that Caga Tio fixed..."
Tumblr media
"I'm working on it! Just let me focus, please! Maybe I just need to unwind. What else do we have to do to help you prepare as Santa Claus?"

"And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth. And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants." Exodus 9:33-34, KJV "Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;" Deuteronomy 8:15, KJV "Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; And then the LORDS wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you." Deuteronomy 11:16-17, KJV "And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed." Deuteronomy 28:23-24, KJV "Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil." 2 Samuel 1:21, KJV "When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them: Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance." 1 Kings 8:35-36, KJV "And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word . . . And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land . . . For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth." 1 Kings 17:1, 7, 14, KJV "And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth . . . And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain." 1 Kings 18:1, 41, KJV "When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; yet if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou dost afflict them; Then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou hast taught them the good way, wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given unto thy people for an inheritance." 2 Chronicles 6:26-27, KJV "And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice. If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:12-14, KJV "Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned." Job 24:19, KJV "For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah." Psalms 32:4, KJV "Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard. What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry." Isaiah 5:1-7, KJV "And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not." Isaiah 58:11, KJV "Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?" Jeremiah 2:6, KJV "Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whores forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed." Jeremiah 3:2-3, KJV "The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth. Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up. And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads. Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads. Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass. And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass." Jeremiah 14:1-6, KJV "For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit." Jeremiah 17:8, KJV "A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols." Jeremiah 50:38, KJV "And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face. For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord GOD: every man's sword shall be against his brother. And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD." Ezekiel 38:18-23, KJV "I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought." Hosea 13:5, KJV "Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house. Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands." Haggai 1:7-11, KJV "And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles." Zechariah 14:16-19, KJV "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit." James 5:17-18, KJV "These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will." Revelation 11:6, KJV Just as God causes droughts, He also sends the rain. Valley of the Creuse (Sunlight Effect) .. [1 / 2]
1889 painting by Claude Monet, exhibited at the MFA, Boston, MA.
The interesting thing about Monet is that he painted the same scenes over and over again to capture variations that become visible with changing light.
Oil on canvas This pieture belongs to a group that Monet painted during his 1889 stay at Fresselines in the Massif Central region of France. It represents the convergence of two rivers, the Petite Cruse and the Grande Cruse, under the midday sun. Bright light casts every cranny and outcropping of rock into high relief and makes the river below sparkle with Monet's thick strokes of white.

The gifts of the Godhead Part 3f
The power gifts of the Holy Spirit; Miracles, Faith, and Gifts of healings
The power gifts of the Holy Spirit are the gifts most likely to cause a stir and draw a crowd! This is the case for distinct reasons; firstly, most people have unmet needs in their lives. Many people need a miracle or require a gift of faith to overcome some huge obstacle in their lives or desire a healing touch from the Lord.
Another reason these gifts are so popular is that Christians love to see God move in power!
However, although most, if not all of us would love to see the power gifts in operation, there are certain dangers for the believers who operate in these gifts. Sometimes we love the Lord's deeds more than we love His person! People will often flock to a healing or miracle meeting but would not come to a teaching on the attributes of God.
We must desire the Giver Himself not just His gifts.
We must love God first for who He is and not for what He gives us.
People will travel for miles to see a man or woman with a reputation for doing miracles. Such ministers often get put on a pedestal and folks can forget it is the Holy Spirit who is glorifying Jesus Christ by performing the miracles etc.
Ministers who operate in these power gifts often become unapproachable and sadly in some cases fall into serious sin. Pride comes before a fall! The church must take its share of the blame if we put these ministers under such a pressure of high expectation that they just cannot cope.
We become disappointed when we find out these men have 'feet of clay,’ but we should have known better than to look at the man anyway!
Miracles [1],[2]
These are when God glorifies Himself by intervening in the natural processes in a supernatural way. This usually involves a dramatic shortening of the time scale of the natural process. For example, all healing is performed by God who gives and maintains life. If He did not supply the healing power to all of our bodies, we would die. But when Jesus of Nazareth went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the Devil, he either shortened the time scale of healing from gradual to instantaneous (or) or instigated an otherwise impossible feat.
The miracle of turning the water into wine is an example since it is God who produces all wine from water (and other ingredients). At the wedding in Cana Jesus simply speeded up the process!
Similarly in the case of the feeding of the five thousand with the loaves and fishes, it is the Lord who multiplies seed for bread and fishes, Jesus just did it in a quicker and more supernatural way.
God can miraculously stretch things out like the barrel of meal and the cruse of oil!
1 Kings 17:14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
Corrie Ten Boom's little bottle of vitamins lasted for months in the concentration camp!
Some Christians have reported driving hundreds of miles on one gallon of petrol!
God will sometimes do this type of miracle but only when it is really needed. (the clutch had gone in my car but I prayed God would enable me to drive it to the repair shop. The mechanic could not believe I had driven it there with no clutch!
Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs [3] following. Amen.
Miracles, signs, and wonders [4] follow the believers. Signs draw our attention to God and seek to cause us to believe in him and his power. They also confirm that it is the authentic word of God that has been preached.
Whereas wonders are directed towards our imagination and are given to get us
thinking about the awesomeness of God.
When a deadly snake bit Paul while in Malta, the natives expected him to die but God preserved his life as a miraculous sign to the Maltese.
The word "Sign" (semeion) in the New Testament is used of miracles and are taken as evidence of divine authority. Sometimes it is translated as "miracle.”
The New Testament writers also used dunamis, meaning power or inherent ability, to refer to activity of supernatural origin or character (Mark 6:2; Acts 8:13; 19:11; Rom. 15:19; 1 Cor. 12:10,28,29; Gal. 3:5; 2 Thess. 2:9; Heb. 2:4).
Also the word "Work" (ergon) is also employed in the New Testament in the sense of "miracle." John the Baptist heard of the "works" of Jesus while he was in prison (Matt. 11:2). The apostle John used the term frequently in his Gospel (5:20,36; 7:3; 10:38; 14:11,12; 15:24).
Amen
Personal Prayer
Footnotes
[1] 1411. dunamis, doo'-nam-is, from G1410; force (lit. or fig.); spec. miraculous power (usually by impl. a miracle itself): --ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work.
[2] How do miracles relate to the natural order? Christian thinkers have responded in diverse ways throughout the centuries. Some hold that miracles are not contrary to nature (Augustine and C. S. Lewis, for instance). This harmony view contends that human knowledge with limited perspective does not fully understand or comprehend the higher laws that God employs in working the miraculous. Others (like Thomas Aquinas) have maintained miracles stand outside the laws of nature. This approach is called the intervention view, based on their belief that God intervenes in the natural order to do the miraculous.
[3] The basic nature of a sign is that it points people to God. "Wonders" describe God's supernatural activity, a special manifestation of His power (Ex. 7:3), Wonders can serve as a sign of a future event. Signs seek to bring belief (Ex. 4:5; compare 10:2), but they do not compel a person to believe (Ex. 4:9). We should join the Psalmist in confessing that the God of Israel "alone works wonders" (Ps. 72:18 NASB).
[4] "Wonders" (teras) translates a Greek word from which the word terror comes. It denotes something unusual that causes the beholder to marvel. Although it usually follows "signs," it sometimes precedes it (Acts 2:22,43; 6:8) or occurs alone (as in Acts 2:19).
Whereas a sign appeals to the understanding, a wonder appeals to the imagination. "Wonders" are usually presented as God's activity.
Next time in The gifts of the Godhead Part 3g we will consider the other two power gifts of the Holy Spirit i.e. faith and gifts of healings.

Wild hair burnt to the ground - another bald head filtering into the collection round the stone.
