so empires smp is a fantasy setting right? so you know what we do when there's a fantasy setting? do complex worldbuilding to figure out how each empire would communicate of course :)
(basically this is just an excuse for me to dump my brain out a bit)
Codlands- i feel like the codlands wouldn't actually have a set way for communication. in my mind, it's one of the smallest empires and is pretty casual at that, so if they need a message sent out someone will deliver it personally
Crystal Cliffs- magic!! gotta use that magic for something. i feel like gem would use doves or something for more casual communication (for style points ofc) but if it's urgent i wanna say there's a way to magically kind of fax notes straight to someone. like you're sitting at your desk and POOF, note. i also like to think that her and fwhip exchange "talking notes" like that one in harry potter that ron gets where it records your voice i guess? i dunno i think they do it for gossip since it's best consumed spoken not written
Gilded Helianthia- duckies :)) i don't know a single thing about pearl's empire yet but i know it has a duck flag so yeah duck messengers
Grimlands- the grimlands uses a mix of carrier pigeons and ravens. plus, later on when fwhip learns a bit of magic he starts using the magic notes with gem but the actual citizens don't do that
House Blossom- is it house blossom or the overgrowth? i dunno i still need to watch katherine's pov. anyway i think people will just. get flowers that show up on their doorstep or something from the overgrowth. no one knows how they get there and the messages attached are always slightly cryptic
Mezalea- hot air balloons!! like joel's delivery service :D i think it's not very efficient but gets style points definitely. like imagine a tiny balloon floating down to your window to give you a note. that's magical
Maztec Empire- i feel like they don't communicate with anyone outside their own empire i dunno why. maybe cause it's called the lost empire? i know nothing about joey's pov yet tho so this will probably change
Mythland- they don't communicate sausage just appears behind you if he needs to tell you something. how? 🤷‍♂️
Ocean Empire- fish are best messengers. yeah they get the paper wet but look at their little faces. you're gonna be mad at that lil guy?
Pixandria- i'm gonna say that wandering traders give out messages for you. like mailmen. so there's a whole system of wandering trader comes back home, stocks up goods to travel again, someone pays for them to deliver a message, etc.
Rivendell- the owls! harry potter mfs using owls for mail 🤨 but i think scott actually uses an owl for mail in an episode but i'm not sure? i watched his pov like 8 months ago i can't remember
Undergrove- i'd have to give this some actual thought but at the moment i think it would be very funny if they could make mushrooms spell out messages like the mosquitoes in gravity falls. like they're very simple and always kind of misspelled
i have not watched all the povs so some stuff may not be accurate so please let me know if i should change anything (please feed my worldbuilding need please please please please please please)

Grimlands & Crystal Cliffs share a lot of traditions and customs, as well special dishes because the two original founders were brothers! Count Grim & Wizard Grim :) - Later down the line when River Grim meets Mai Moon, the grand wizard of Crystal Cliffs, they fall in love & have twins. Some people in the Grimlands & Cliffs believe Fwhip & Gem are reincarnations of the original Count & Grand Wizard :) (Gandalf was Wizard Grim's apprentice who mastered a spell for immortality and transformation, Gandalf has been the "familiar" for each wizard since until Gem left & he took over)
Rivendell has customs every winter, such as Winter Balls and Winter Mourning periods for those who were lost in prior wars, or prior champions of Aeor. Many of the Aeor champions were Rivendellian royals - Scott breaks tradition of keeping one of the plaques covered in snow (Exor Champions). Scott & Xornoth's names are later added to the plaque & Rivendell keeps the plaques uncovered forever. They have a lot of frozen foods/treats/frosted treats during warmer months and hella fuckin good hot chocolate for hard winters.
Overgrown has a tradition of Spring Balls, and very sweet food. (not much here sorry..)
Undergrove has very spicy food and but Fae, Gnomes, and Vampires are "immune" to the spice, in the sense it doesnt bother them. Full blood elves, such as Rivendellians, do not have this. They are very affected by spices. Shrub has apologized for an attempted assassination on Scott, Scott doesnt even see it as that it was a simple unknown factor.
The Swamp & Ocean empires have very similar traditions and foods together. prior to Jimmy & Fwhip, the two empires had an alliance with the Grimlands and due to Fwhip growing up with Sausage as neighbors their entire childhood, the alliance was ended and the Cod War started. The Ocean Empire has a trident for their ruler that has new things added to it each time theres a new ruler, the CodFather has a very similar tradition but with a necklace and adding a bead to the necklace for each ruler – The Oceanic rulers tend to cover the trident with beads on strings, tightly :)
I'll do more soon

My head canon for crystal cliffs is that it is notorious for being the empire with the worst food
It is a school and the closest thing they have to a government is the school board and gem
There food is close to what would be served in a school cafeteria because they focus on studying and teaching they like food that is easy to make and cheap to produce
The students and teachers are forced to get creative and try to find ways to make it more palatable
They use spell’s to artificially flavor the food or use spells on themselves to change the way their taste buds perceive the taste
The food is not natural and the while edible the taste is off and noticeably different from what it is trying to emulate ( like how banana flavored candy tastes different from bananas)
One good thing that comes out of this situation is that they are also known for their food lasting years and being well preserved
They have very manufactured products just like the grimland s which makes sense because most of the students are from the grimland
Oooh this is simultaneously hilarious and actually a pretty cool idea.
I feel as though this translates into "Gem is a horrible cook" which I a hundred percent support. She's the best potion maker the Cliffs have seen in over a hundred years in terms of potency but they all taste like DIRT. And if she even sets foot inside a kitchen SOMETHING automatically explodes whether or not she actually touches anything.

Lost to Time (Excerpt)
Location: Mythland
Time: 4:21 PM, Friday, November 1
Gem swooped on her wings into the beautiful kingdom of Mythland, ruled by King Sausage. Despite its scenic gardens and hanging vines, it was a deadly place, where many entered… but only the strongest made it back out. It was also home to the Assassin’s Guild, where Sausage himself set out to assassinate people’s enemies. He held no loyalties but Mythland and Gilded Helianthia, where Gem’s friend Queen Pearl lived.
She stepped cautiously into the seemingly unsuspecting bar. Sausage was behind the counter, cleaning glasses, but Gem’s sharp sense of magic and her keen eyes did not fail to overlook the deadly sharp knives lining the walls, some spattered with rust. Or… something else. Gem preferred not to think about those knives, so focused on the king.
“Gem! Just the person I was looking for! So I’ve noticed a strange amount of blood sheep lately, don’t know why. Really all I’ve been doing is taking care of the Guild-“ here, Sausage motioned to the wall of knives - “and being in the summoning circle. Just chanting these. Nothing much.”
“The summoning circle? Sausage what have you been saying?!” Gem cried.
“Nothing, just what’s in this book.” Sausage said, as he tossed a book to her. It was surprisingly thick.
“What page?” Gem asked apprehensively.
“The first one.” He said, waving off her concerned expression with a wave of his cleaning rag. Gem opened the book.
All hail the blood sheep
All hail the blood sheep
All hail the blood sheep
All hail the blood sheep
All hail the blood sheep
“Sausage! What is this?” Gem snapped. “Don’t meddle in such things, it can and it WILL have bad-“
“What was that?”
Just before Gem could finish lecturing her fellow ruler about dark magic, she saw a glimpse of a person-like silhouette… but different. Gem shivered violently - something definitely was not right. And if nothing was wrong, the usually warm kingdom of Mythland was now very cold. Which was still wrong.
“Is everything alright Gem?”
“I am… I think. Sausage, we need to get out of here.”
“Relax! This is Mythland, I’m here! Nothing will happen. Only good things.”
“Magic, Sausage, magic. It’s telling me to go! Maybe… if we are going to stay we should go and get my crystals. They’ll help ward off evil power.”
“I… see… you…” a raspy voice said seemingly just behind them.
Sausage jumped and Gem shrieked, and whirled around to look. But there was nothing there save falling particles of deep purple and red.

Was watching an episode of Um Actually where a question had to do with how the hogwarts dormitories passcodes vs locks n riddles worked and made me remember all the chicanery possible at the Crystal Cliffs
Basically the idea is that students dorms have very regular key locks.they work? Maybe aren’t the hardest to pick but a lot of kids don’t actually know how to do that (Gem Absolutly does, I imagine many Grimlands kids would) anyways so that’s fine but as students get older and learn their spells they tend to experiment with the locks on their dorms till eventually the upper class means dorms have an array of passcodes and handshakes and spells and whatever you can IMAGINE put into place as a security measure and it is as delightful as it is chaotic lol

History of the Crystal Cliffs
Long ago, the wizards left the respective existing empires, believing that no government but their own should be able to regulate magic or limit its access. Afraid that some rulers may have nefarious purposes in mind, the empires' most prominent wizards left their homes one day. Some claimed they vanished altogether, but they did not know the truth. These wizards simply relocated and founded a new settlement, where no non-wizard had the power to decide the fate of magic and its users.
The first wizards carved their homes in the cliffside, hiding their talents and homes from those who would wish them harm. They built their homes with the calcite and crystals they dug up, discovering the amethyst in the walls had potent magical abilities. Furthermore, they seemed to have struck gold, with a mountain that seemed to contain a lot of the amethyst geodes they had encountered previously, and their capabilities grew alongside them.
After a while, this wizard society - which named itself after their new homes - returned to the surface and built homes next to the cliffs. They infused their amethust roofd with powerful spells, which would prevent those with nefarious intentions from ever setting foot or even finding this safe haven for wizards. Many a scout could not reach the area, having been sent by malevolent rulers. Other individuals did find the Crystal Cliffs: hopeful wizards who'd discovered their love for the arcane and young sorcerers who wanted to seek people such as themselves. All flocked to the Crystal Cliffs in the hopes of being taught their powers and to find comradery among their peers.
Even as the Crystal Cliffs Academy was built out of the characteristic calcite and amethyst, most homes were still constructed inside the cliffs and deeper in the mountain, for everyone's general protection. Even if small homes and shops popped up next to the Academy, most accommodated guests and diplomats, for common rumor has it that all those without magical capabilities would be stricken with a terrible magical affliction, should they step into the caves.
Across the decades, the Crystal Cliffs grew from a secretive safe haven for wizards into a cultural meltingpot, a powerhouse for all sorts of magical discoveries and training. Their appointed Headmaster of the Academy doubled as the unofficial ruler of the Crystal Cliffs for international relations; still, it is the only government system in the eastern empires where its leader is chosen based on merit and magical prowess, rather than having a title that is passed on from monarch to monarch. They reside in a magnificent tower built atop the highest peak, only accessible by flight or magical means, and they wield an amethyst staff of their own making, a sign of their magical capabilities and a showcase of all their knowledge. The Crystal Cliffs themselves has never done away with their magicals wards, thus still barring those with bad intentions entry and keeping their young students safe within the walls of their citystate.

Ok so I thought about this. What if Animalia is where the Crystal Cliffs used to be? What if it IS the Crystal Cliffs but just with a different name? Think about it. Animalia is basically in the mountains or right by a mountain. It also has the same block pallette. Amethyst roofs, calcite walls (or white walls I can't remember if they're made out of calcite or not), and spruce accents/Floors. Animalia even has a Crystal mine!
After the rapture, the only a few parts of the Crystal Cliffs remained. After everyone had left the Crystal Cliffs in order to find safety, the cat people of the Lost Empire went to the abandoned parts of the Crystal Cliffs for shelter. They eventually changed the name to Animalia and made it their new home. The Tiger Blood Prince and Princess became the new heirs to the throne and made sure everyone was being treated the same. Eventually as time went on, the bloodline from the prince and princess continued until eventually, the new mayor became Lizzie.

How I’d look if I lived in the empires from Empires SMP season 1
Using this lovely picrew, because I can’t draw at all and I’m not putting together full cosplays for this
There’s of course twelve empires on the server and Tumblr only allows ten picture per post, plus I want a reference pic, so the remaining three empires will be in the Reblogs
Also for those who don’t know, I am non-binary so some of these will look more masculine and others more feminine, it was all just based on how I was feeling that very second
(I also recommend doing this yourself, whether you draw or use some picrew thing, it was genuinely really fun)

Empires smp s1 as vanguard G clans(Crystal Cliffs)
disclaimer once once again: warning this is gonna be a really long post 030, but if you have some time to waste for sure go for it and enjoy reading the work of a mad man.
I am quite a big fan of card games and all those sorts of stuff so as a little side project I decided to turn all the empires from season 1 to clans from cardfight vanguard G. So each clan includes the cc as the main grade 3 and the grade 0,1, and 2s my headcanons for citizens and creatures belonging to that empire.
<info about this card game at the end for more info>
Crystal Cliffs Structure Deck: Violet Intuition
since we looked at the Grimlands and the other half of the roseblings last time lets now focus our attention on the other half of the duo Crystal Cliffs. As I mentioned before I wanted the wither rose alliance members to share a certain drawback which is that they all exploit their resources quite heavily, whether that be representative of natural resources, human resources, or intellectual resources, which makes them deck out quite easily.
with that being said lets look at what I drew on for my inspiration for this specific empire/clan. Firstly, the main focus of the Crystal Cliffs is mainly its magic and the academy. Headcanon wise I think of the citizen and people of the crystal cliffs as being mostly arcane users in some way, so whether that be alchemist, healers, summoner or so on. So obviously I want to focus on the deck being able to perform feats of many kinds of magics because that is one of the coolest thing about magic, its that it can perform the impossible and pave the road for more exploration. In the first series as well we see that e!gem has a multitude of useful situation spells that can seal away beings, perceive the world around her, and cast destructive magic. So I want this deck to have as much if not more variety in what it can do.
so this point might be a good time to share a bit of my ideas for what different costs for cards could represent because this will be important to explain the playstyle of this empire. Personally I like to think that Counter blasts represents the expenditure of physical resources, whether that be making a potion, or engaging in combat, while Soul blasts represents the use of non physical resources, like spiritual power, or magical essence to other spells and miracles.
with all of that out of the way I'd like to think that the Crystal Cliffs would be an all rounder type of deck that focuses on the Soul blast mechanic to replicate the idea of expending magical power to casts spells. Which segway into the empire's keyword "Studious". This keyword is made up to reflect how much studying and research e!gem did in season 1, she spent a lot of her time observing and making up the best solution to every situation. Which is also why cards with "Studious" has the ability to present the player with different ways to seize their victory.
(as you can see this pov is what ive clinged to first so its a bit longer sorry)
Keyword = Studious, when units with this trait is soul blasted you may choose 1 of your vanguard to give an effect to until the end of the turn.

x12 critical triggers
x4 heal triggers
after seeing the cards in this empire I think its safe to say that this deck is a bit less straightforward than the subclasses seen before, because in addition to focusing on your main resource in your damage zone you have to pay a considerable amount of attention to your soul as well because that is essentially the bread and butter of your deck. Another thing to look out for is what you choose to soul blast because the cards in this deck offer so much option to its player which can make it a bit of a handful, so someone who wants to use this empire have to be very good at planning their future moves and balancing their skills efficiently. But in general if you can manage all those resources this empire is essentially the jack of all trades, Crystal Cliffs card can draw, an retire, can call more units, and even help you regain your resources.
now lets look at some weaknesses of this empire's deck. To start off playtesting this empire indicate that this deck is not the best early game and tends to struggle quite a bit because this deck requires a good amount of set up to soul charge cards so that they can soul blast them later on to activate their different abilities and use their keyword "Studious". Which means that this deck has to commit quite a good amount of resource to acquire soul and set up their board to make some of their more remarkable plays. Another sort of weakness of this deck is that although they are the jack of all trades they are also master of none. This trait of theirs may give them a lot of upper hand when it comes to countering different empires like they should be but this also means that they aren't particularly strong against any specific empire either.
and that concludes the exploration of the Crystal Cliffs as a vanguard clan. For my next upload I'm probably going to cover the Lost Empire to investigate the idea of what an aggressive empire clan wise is like.

i'll literally never be convinced crystal/kristen was not a figment of misty's imagination, a friend she invented for herself that the others played along with because at least misty was occupied. i know she reads so fake to me just because she was poorly integrated into the rest of the wilderness plot (as in - not at all lol), she's a half-assed attempt at giving context to misty's anxious attachment style, which was almost immediately undermined anyway by her deciding to like walter. crystal/kristen never appears until misty is socially iced out for accidentally poisoning the soup and suddenly there's a second incredibly annoying theatre kid everyone wishes would go away? that dresses in misty's exact color palette? and they've been on the same team this whole time while misty was so ostracized and lonely? nobody even wanted to look for her when she "vanished"! the wilderness even magicked away her body so they'd have to hunt each other! crystal isn't even her name. i'm sorry, but she's about as real as akilah's mouse.
not being able to suspend my disbelief long enough to accept this subplot as real cheapened it a lot for me as it happened, but i have since decided her not being real could be plausibly-canon, and suddenly it's so compelling. misty invented herself the perfect friend that accepted everything about her and daydreamed little playdates and slumber parties, and even so, when she confessed to destroying the black box, her daydream turned on her. misty's own (quite vivid) imagination couldn't stretch enough to allow her a friend who accepted her wholly. she plays out what would happen if she told her closest friend this dark, fucked up secret, and it ends bloody. she convinces herself she'll never be fully accepted and loved, and ultimately it doesn't matter if crystal/kristen was real or not. i'm honestly fine with this theory never being confirmed (again, i don't think they intended it this way, crystal's place in the story was just criminally unearned and underwritten), but i'm much more compelled by a version of events where misty is so lonely and confused and guilt-ridden that her mind (or, if you'd like, the wilderness) gives her the kind of friend she was unlikely to find even under better conditions, and there's still betrayal and death at the end of it. misty's adolescent brain is already self-aware enough to know her hands will be bloodstained and unholdable for the rest of her life.
