Shiva wanted to get the perfect gift for his wives but he can't find anything and his last resort he have to meet with the Void, the god killer , the very entity that have the power to destroy in it's will in a form of a small black cat
In humor and the amount of balls that Shiva display to meet them willingly impressed them and give them a two task to find something in the mortal realm that he must used the firm as a human man to find it and one in the realm in gods in order and if he finds it they'll make a gift for him
And when he found the objects that he needed to find they took it in their void realm and craft the most amazing jewelry and fabrics for his wives to wear that neither from both gods or mortal couldn't recreate
And before he leaves they said they expect some offering from him later
-Shiva was in a pickle, groaning softly as he ruffled his hair roughly. His anniversary with his wives was going to be soon, they were all married to him in the same month of June, just on different dates in different years, and over the years, rather than have three separate anniversary celebrations, they liked having one big party together, just separate ‘private’ celebrations on their actual anniversaries.
-Shiva’s current predicament was finding a gift for his wives, he always gave them jewelry or clothes, they each had a garden on his palace grounds, and when he asked if they had anything they wanted and couldn’t come up with anything, they didn’t need anymore clothes or jewelry, so now Shiva was stressing what to get them!!
-So here he was in the Greek pantheon, looking for the one being that could possibly help him, Y/N, better known as the God Killing Void.
-You were surprised to see Shiva who entered the sunroom you were lounging in, enjoying laying in the sunbeams like you were an actual cat and as he took a seat you got up and hopped up into his lap, “What can I do for you, Lord Shiva.”
-Shiva wasn’t at all embarrassed telling you that he was looking for a gift for his wives for their anniversary banquet, and that he wanted to get them something special but didn’t know what to get and wanted your help.
-His plea for help was respectful, as you had to admit he was brave for coming to ask your help about this, but you stood, licking your paw, “I will help you, but I need you to do something for me first, there are a few things I need you to gather to make these gifts.”
-His eyes went wide and instantly agreed, a bright grin on his face before you pulled up a map of earth, “Two of the items are on Earth, while one is here in Valhalla. The one here in Valhalla will probable be the easier one to get first, since you will need to take a human form on earth to get what I need.”
-Shiva’s focus and determination, giving you a firm look, “I’ll do anything to make my wives happy.” His answer made you smile, giving him a small nod.
-About an hour later, Shiva was at Hephaestus’ blacksmith shop, putting in the order that you told him to get, six identical golden cuff bracelets with a circle indentation on the top, meant for a jewel or a stone of some sort.
-Shiva was a bit uneasy, as he had mentioned that his wives didn’t want jewelry, but the sparkling lights in your eyes soothed him, telling him not to worry.
-Once he had the bracelets he brought them to you as well as a crystal bowl of whipped cream before you opened a portal, “This will take you where you need to be in the human world. Remember- the pearls you need to get must all be the same size and two of each color, one for each of your wives.”
-He nodded and stepped through the portal, changing into a more human looking form, with only one set of eyes, one set of arms, and his skin tan in color, much like Parvati. It felt a bit weird, only having one set of arms, he felt off balance, but it was only for a short while.
-It took Shiva almost two days to find six pearls, two of each color, all in the same size, he was a bit annoyed, but whenever he would start to get upset, he would think of his wives, thinking of their smiling faces.
-Once all the pearls were obtained he went to the last shop, his eyelid twitching in slightly annoyance, realizing that this was what you wanted for payment, a Lovesac Sac chair.
-Once the giant chair was purchased a portal opened and he quickly stepped through it, seeing you sitting there waiting for him.
-He kneeled down to your level, presenting you with the pearls and you nodded, looking closely, “These will do, let me create this for you, while you set up my Lovesac!”
-Shiva couldn’t help but grin, no longer really annoyed, as you wanted this as payment for helping him and you got the bracelets and the pearls before disappearing in on yourself, vanishing from sight.
-Shiva set up the chair and he couldn’t help but lay on it, a deep groan leaving him, “Oh man~ I might have to get one of these for myself.” You surprised him by reappearing next to him, “I saw humans enjoying this and they looked comfy, and by your reaction, it’s true.”
-Shiva nodded, sitting up and you waved your paw and the six bracelets appeared, the pearls were larger and sparkled almost like they were diamonds, “These will make your wives happy. You wear one set, one for each wife, and give them each their designated color. You will be able to sense when they are happy or sad, and they can feel your own emotions. Touch the jewel and you can send small messages to them, like when you tell them that you love them.”
-Shiva was in awe, they were beautiful and while only a bit nervous, he nodded, thanking you sincerely before you made him pick you up and throw you onto your Lovesac, as you had seen humans leaping onto it.
-Your deep, elongated sigh of relief quickly had him laughing as the Lovesac basically swallowed you whole, you had never felt something so comfortable before.
-His wives had all plowed him down when he presented them with the gifts, telling them what they did, whispering a soft ‘I love you’ to each of them through their stones, which sent them an overwhelming feeling of love through the stones.
-It was a beautiful but very meaningful gift and Shiva had you to thank for it.
-He later kidnapped you down to earth to go to a Lovesac store so he could get some as well and get you another, bigger one, which you were more than happy to accompany him for!

Uhh random Ripple Star Fairy headcanons because I have a lot of these. The fairies are barely known about and I love Kirby 64, so that leaves plenty of room for me to speculate and headcanon
- There are two types of fairies- royal fairies and normal fairies. Royal fairies are about the height of your average human when full grown, and are almost always female. Fairies also only have queens, so male royals often go to live in far off parts of the planet because of how matriarchal fairy society is. Royal fairies always have black hair and violet eyes. Normal fairies are the ones you see all over the place! They make up for 99% of the fairy population. Normal fairies can have hair in any color but black, and it’s usually a vibrant color, and blue eyes
- Baby fairies are very, very little. So small. They fit in the palm of your hand. They only grow to about 3 feet tall after all. They are also quite fragile, especially their wings. Their wings are like that of a butterfly when they’re first born, being wet and so sensitive that any wrong touch to them will permanently affect that fairy. Artificial attempts at drying the wings of a newborn fairy can cause the wings to crystalize, so they’re often just taken close care of by their mothers until they dry on their own
- Fairies love rocks. Mostly gemstones, but still. Because crystals are so important to them, they hold all rocks in a high regard
- Speaking of, the Crystal. It’s the most important part of fairy society because of what it can do. The Crystal is capable of taking the form of any weapon depending on the wielder and is able to truly destroy Dark Matter. It also produces a very special kind of water when moisture collects on it and falls off. This water, kept in a bowl below the Crystal, can heal any wound or other ailment
- Fairies have weird diets. They need sugar to survive, both natural and artificial. They eat fruits and baked goods and pastries, meaning that most fairies are either farmers or bakers. They can eat other things, but often don’t
- Some fairies will form a very strong, super close platonic bond with a non-fairy. This is more than best friends but not quite romantic. This relationship is what Adeleine and Ribbon have
- Fairies tend to sleep in piles. They will sleep in their own beds, but also like to cuddle a lot. They love touch and reassurance. In the palace, this fairy cuddle pile usually happens on top of Adeleine, who doesn’t mind being crushed
- Fairies and Dark Matter are natural enemies. They fight a lot. Dark Matter are more scared of fairies than fairies are of them because of the Crystal
- Fairies can purr. They just can
- Despite not having any form of scales on their wings, fairies still shed. This “shedding” is actually shiny light particles that fall off their wings during springtime due to the change in season
- Ripple Star doesn’t get very cold at all and always has warm temperatures and no crazy weather, so fairies aren’t used to different weather. Ribbon didn’t have a very fun time on Shiver Star
- Fairies almost always have four wings- two sets of two- that are shiny and iridescent. Royal fairies also have four wings, but their wings have a distinct heart and diamond shaped pattern in them, denoting their royalty
- Queen Ripple, the current Queen of the Fairies, is quite young for a fairy. She is the same size as a younger human, after all
- Fairies love sunning themselves. They’ll often lay in fields and just let the light reflect off of their wings and absorb the light
- Adeleine is treated as an honorary fairy

The Apothecary Diaries
S1E7 First Watch
Tumblr media
Here's where I watch The Apothecary Diaries for the first time and give my thoughts, analysis, predictions, and occasionally I stumble into a joke.
If you want to read from the beginning:
Episode 1
My character cheat sheet
Hongniang - Head LIW at Jade Pavilion
Lady Lishu - child bride concubine
Lady Ah Duo - one of the top 4 concubines
Lady Lihua - concubine who was poisoned by face power
Crystal Pavilion - Lady Lihua's residence
Jade Pavilion - Lady Gyokuyou's residence
Xiaolan - Maomao's servant girl friend
Lihaku - military officer who gave Maomao a hairpin
The Verdigris House - brothel
Luomen - Maomao's dad
Maomao has been ordered to rest since she was poisoned last episode. Her friends are worried and demand she take time to let herself heal. Maomao would rather not, but so far she is compliant.
And now that she has time to think, some of the things she has been repressing are rising. She's thinking about her father and wondering if he is okay. I suspect that she hasn't spent a lot of time with the grief of losing her old life. But grief is something that is inside you, not something you can run away from. Now that she is still, there is no where to hide from it.
Her trauma is also making itself known. She admits to feeling uncomfortable without her freckles painted on. Her altered appearance has been a shield she wore to protect herself from the male gaze.
The fact that she is processing her grief and trauma is actually a good sign that she is in a place that she feel safe. And I credit that to the love and care she receives at the Jade Pavilion.
But Maomao can only tolerate so much of this kind of introspection, so she paints her freckles on and goes to ask to be allowed to work. Apparently, most of the people at the garden party thought Maomao was literally a different person and Lady Gyokuyou is fine with Maomao hiding her true face.
Gaoshun has been at the pavilion all morning, just waiting for an opportunity to talk to Maomao, and not for any other reason, especially not to spend time with Hongniang. Lady Gyokuyou sent this high ranking official out to the yard to pull weeds because he was making eyes at Hongniang bored. Once again Maomao notes that Gaoshun is prime husband material. If only he weren't a "eunuch." My prediction here is that he is a private guard/official to Jinshi who was assigned to the rear palace along with his master, rather than a regular eunuch or palace official.
Jinshi actually sent Maomao the poisonous soup that she asked for. Gaoshun wants her to promise she won't drink it. Lol.
Maomao is out here using fingerprinting analysis to solve this crime. She deduces how many people have touched the bowl and is compelled to tell Gaoshun her theories on Lady Lishu's food taster. A fuller extent of the bullying that Lady Lishu experiences is painted. It turns out her ladies in waiting are even more terrible than Lady Lihua's.
The person who added the poison touched the rim of the bowl which is something servants handling food are trained not to do. So that eliminates a few suspects. Maomao has passed what she knows to Gaoshun, and therefore Jinshi. Hopefully he will have some insight.
But not tonight. We are seeing an exhausted Jinshi for the first time. He hasn't slept, or changed his clothes, and now he doesn't have the energy to be formal. Gaoshun scolds him for it.
Gaoshun: Your true nature's starting to show.
Jinshi: Who cares? There's nobody here.
Gaoshun: You're forgetting me.
Jinshi: A little slack, if you please.
Gaoshun: No.
As it turns out, Gaoshun has been looking after Jinshi since the day he was born. Yet, despite their long relationship, Jinshi is not permitted to relax in his company. I feel bad for Jinshi here. His relationship with Gaoshun may be the closest one he has, and yet even this is so formal. It has to be a lonely existence.
And as if we hadn't picked up that Jinshi is in fact a prince, this whole conversation offers more evidence. He has had a minder since the day he was born, and the dignity of his station must be maintained at all times.
And if that isn't enough, Jinshi's hairpin is a symbol of his status. Gaoshun is frustrated that Jinshi just tossed this hairpin of great importance.
It's something only special individuals can wear.
Xiaolan informs Maomao that she can use the hairpin she was gifted to request that the man who gave it to her escort her outside the palace. Maomao is enthusiastic about the idea. And two men have given her a pin. I'm guessing she'll ask the bouncy military officer before Jinshi, even though she knows him better. Things are complicated with Jinshi and there are so many unnamed feelings between them. Asking Jinshi would mean something. Whereas Lihaku means nothing to Maomao. He is a means to an end.
Not Maomao questioning whether Jinshi qualifies as a man! OMG!
But considering how one of them lost a certain part of their anatomy does he still count?
And Lihaku is... kind of a shitty guy. He's repulsed that Maomao isn't as beautiful as she was at the party, accuses her of being clueless, and trying to take advantage of him. His tune drastically changes when Maomao makes an offer to get him a night with a high ranking courtesan.
And this is why Maomao chose Lihaku to be her escort rather than Jinshi. This is what she has to trade. An introduction to a famous courtesan would not be of interest to the two women, or the "eunuch" who gave her hair pins, but it very much interests Lihaku. This is just a business transaction for both Maomao and Lihaku, but it is a successful one. Maomao has secured an escort to take her home.
Maomao's pavilion friends are enthused for her. They essentially are acting like Maomao has accepted a proposal. They don't question her on why the man she is leaving the palace with is a different guy than Jinshi who they saw give her a hairpin first. They are simply happy for Maomao's good fortune. Maomao understands none of that. Lady Gyokuyou knows that Maomao doesn't understand about the hairpins and she spares a thought for Jinshi saying:
A pity. His poor heart. When he finds out, it's going to shatter.
Which delights her. Lady Gyokuyou is looking forward to seeing Jinshi suffer. Me too.
And sure enough, when he visits a day too late, Lady Gyokuyou delivers the new about Maomao in the most devastating way she can, implying that Maomao has eloped. She then laughs at Jinshi's horrified reaction before softening the news by letting him know she'll return in 3 days. Lady Gyokuyou is my hero.
As we enter the pleasure district, Maomao describes the various roles the women there play. The Three Princesses of Verdigris House are revered by all. They outrank everyone else. Courtesans in general are respected and there are many girls who hope to be one. Though it's very competitive. Girls will become servants and train to become a courtesan but there is no guarantee they will achieve it. This show is always showing us the various roles that women play in this society.
The Madame of Verdigris House greets Maomao with a violent gut punch. She does allow Lihaku to enter the brothel and meet with one of the princesses. Turns out Maomao is paying half of all of her earnings from the palace for this opportunity. And it's still not enough. She's in debt to the brothel. That's probably not a good thing. In fact, I could see that going very, very wrong. She's going to need to be careful.
Maomao returns home, and things are weird with her dad.
Maomao: Hello Dad. I'm home.
Luomen: Oh. Welcome back. You were gone awhile.
Maomao is so happy to see him. She's smiling the whole time, but the casual interaction after her disappearing without a trace and coming back after so long, is weird.
After Maomao falls asleep, Luomen is reflecting and thinks:
The Rear Palace? What a twist of fate.
What do mean Luomen?!
Do you mean generally? Like oh, look how this poor girl who used to live on the bad side of town and work hard to scrape by, is now living in the palace and hanging out with royalty?
Or do you mean specifically? Is there some reason that Maomao being in the rear palace is remarkable? Does she have some hidden connection to the palace? Does she know?
Very little JinMao content in this episode. Which is probably good because they have some things to think about about after all the events of the day of the garden party.
We might be seeing the beginnings of Jinshi unraveling. He's either unable or unwilling to keep up all the walls he's kept until now. Maomao somehow slipped through and he's starting to question if it's worth the effort to keep them up. He tested taking them down with Gaoshun, but was rebuffed. But the cracks have already begun forming and it's only a matter of time before things start to give. He's had a taste of something real and I doubt he can go back to the way things were before.
Maomao on the other hand is running. She had some time to think in the beginning of the episode and she's scared. The emotions are so big and scary. And for as honest and straightforward as Maomao is, she is not good at being vulnerable. It's not a coincidence that she left the palace right after all that happened with Jinshi the day of the garden party. She needs to get away from the palace and Jinshi so she can evaluate how she feels and decide what she wants to do.
Maomao returns home, back to a place where she knew who she was and what she wanted. But she's changed from her time in the palace, and she needs to examine that. Her desires have also changed. Does she really want to leave the palace and return to work for her father?
There are parallel stories being played out between Maomao and Jinshi. Both of them have changed and can't return to the way things were before.
It will be interesting to see how these characters adjust to change, and how their stories will differ or reflect each other.
Most of Jinshi's challenges seem to be external; the pressures of his status, the condfines of his station. He seems willing, perhaps even eager, to face the rising emotions.
Maomao on the other hand has a lot more freedom and less external pressure than Jinshi (ironic because she's an indentured servant), but she instead struggles with internal stressors; the scars of trauma, and fear of intimacy. She fears the rising emotions.
For both of them, there is no going back, and they will have to adjust to the changes and face the challenges that result. There is no way out but through.
But hopefully they will come together face their challenges side by side.
🤞

5th Day of Yule: “Five Golden Rings”
King Thranduil & Sons
Third Age 491
Bar Lasgalen, Palace of the Elvenking
As the lone rider came into clearer view in his progress up the snowy road to the palace, Thranduil began to descend the steps that led to the main courtyard. He sensed the rushed footsteps of someone coming up behind him, and he took one step lightly to the side to make room.
“Pardon me, Ada!” Legolas called out, while he sailed down the lower half of the steps in a single leap.
Thranduil kept walking at his steady, even pace, but watched as his youngest son barreled all the way across the courtyard. The prince paused only to gather up an armful of snow from the covered ground and hastily pack it into a giant clump. Returning to a full sprint, he drew back his arm and flung the icy projectile--with impressive aim, Thranduil noted--in a straight shot toward the approaching rider.
The rider noticed in time, just barely, and swerved his horse to the right to narrowly avoid having a snowball smash squarely into his face. A bellowing cry rang through the night as the rider leapt off his horse and rushed toward his attacker. Thranduil heard Legolas scream as well, and watched the two figures charge at each other like two stags in rutting season.
In the next minute they were on the ground, only partially visible within the thick blanket of snow as they rolled and thrashed about, grappling until a victor emerged.
“Yield!” Gelir commanded, pulling his arm tighter around Legolas’s neck as he yanked him upright.
“I will not!” Legolas grunted, already red-faced as he strained against the merciless headlock.
“He yields,” Thranduil said sternly, finally coming up to the brothers. “Let him go.” He shook his head at Legolas’s groan. “You can seek a rematch tomorrow. Your mother is waiting.”
“We could have had enough time if this one had the decency not to arrive so late!” Legolas laughed, dusting the snow and dirt off his shoulders. “Or is that the custom in your province, oh Lord of Dant-en-Aras?”
“Oho, you shall see for yourself, mark my words, once you move into your own lands next spring, and you have to travel so many miles just to return home.” Gelir gave him a light shove. “Even then you would not have to cross over half the forest like I do.”
Thranduil cleared his throat, anticipating Legolas’s intent to shove him back and resume their shenanigans. At last Gelir remembered himself and greeted his King with a low bow, and then stepped forward to greet his father with an embrace. Thranduil held his son perhaps a little tighter, and a few seconds longer than usual--his now very busy, son-turned-lord whom he had not seen in almost a whole year.
“You need fresh tunics. Both of you.” Thranduil raised his eyebrow at Legolas, but could not help a smirk. “This will not do for dinner. Not when your Ammë has spent weeks working to make this evening perfect.”
As soon as they entered the palace, Thranduil’s three eldest sons were ready in the foyer to meet them. Loud voices filled the hall to its high ceilings as the brothers happily exchanged greetings, while the Elvenking walked up to the line of servants standing by to attend them. He sent two to collect the things he needed, then went to ask his sons to follow him into a nearby parlor.
“Is Ammë upstairs?” Gelir asked, tugging off his traveling clothes to slip on the formal garb that had been brought in for him.
“Yes, with Itarildë and Aranion,” said Mirion, lingering hesitantly by the doorway. “Shall I fetch them, Ada?”
“In a moment,” Thranduil replied. “First, I wanted a chance alone with you all to give you this.”
A butler stepped forward carrying a large coffer and opened its gilded lid.  Inside were five identical goblets, with bowls and stems made of clear crystal and a thick band of gold circling the rim. Thranduil extracted them from the box and one by one presented them to each of his sons.
“These are for you to toast with at tonight’s dinner, as we mark Legolas’s last Yule as a resident of this palace.” He smiled at their cries of admiration and appreciation for the gift. “Then they are for you to take back to your own houses.”
Arvellas held up the goblet to scrutinize the delicate engraving around the bowl, which sparkled with an inlay of tiny gemstones in green and gold. “I would say this technique looks very similar to something I have seen in Hadhodrond, but the Khazâd never work with crystal in their tableware.”
“It seems your cousin has stumbled upon yet another innovation,” Thranduil said. “And another craft he intends to keep a trade secret for our realm.”
“It is a good size,” Turhir grinned at his father. “Enough to hold twice the usual serving?”
“What better to sample the latest arrival of new vintage from Anórien with?”
“Hear, hear to that!” Legolas exclaimed, as they simultaneously raised their goblets to each other. Empty for the moment, but undoubtedly to later on serve as their instruments for draining the King’s wine cellar of half its stock in a single night--and Thranduil would not have it any other way.

Chapter Thirteen
Chapter Fourteen: Living The Life
“Babe, can you drive?” Josh chuckled as he stumbled along with Brynne out to the parking lot.
“Yes, sweetheart, of course,” she agreed, taking her car keys from him.
“Thank you!” Josh chuckled, awkwardly running to the car.
“You’re welcome, my love.”
They had just left the bowling alley after meeting Ray and his new girlfriend there. Brynne had offered to drive, considering she knew Ray would probably ask Josh to drink with him, but Josh had insisted on driving there. But naturally, he had asked Brynne if he could drive her car, considering he loved driving her car. He thought it was the coolest car on earth.
The two of them got into the car, as Josh sat in the passenger’s seat, drunk giggling as he put on his seatbelt, or at least tried to. Josh had only had a couple beers, but he was quite the lightweight.
“Your place, yeah?” she asked as she pulled out of the parking lot.
“Can we go to your place?” Josh asked her. “I don’t wanna go to my parents’.”
“My place?” she questioned.
Although Josh had picked her up from her own house on many occasions, they had never actually hung out at her house. Josh thought it was strange that he and Brynn were dating, but he’d never actually been inside her house at all.
“Yeah, your place,” he nodded. “Why? You don’t want me in your house?” he asked sadly, making a pouty face.
“No, no,” she promised him, remembering that she was dealing with tipsy Josh. “It’s not that, it’s just… I like your place.”
“Really?” he scoffed. “But my parents…!” he slurred.
“Yeah, they’re nice,” Brynne laughed. “I don’t live with my parents… I don’t even talk to my parents.”
“Can we go to your place?” Josh pleaded. “I wanna see your place. Please…?”
“Yes, of course we can,” she nodded, driving in that direction. “You don’t have to ask.”
“Yay!”
Brynne just laughed, shaking her head as she drove. Her own place was a bit further of a drive, but they were there before Josh fell asleep. As they got out of the car, Brynne observed that Josh had mostly sobered up.
“Okay, here we are,” she announced, parking her car in the driveway.
“Your place is so nice,” Josh stared as she unlocked the door.
There was a fountain not far from the door, a very modern, minimalistic sort of thing that just looked like water being poured over a dark wall.
“We haven’t even been inside yet,” she scoffed, opening the door for him.
Josh stepped inside as she closed the door behind them, in awe of her home. The ceiling in the foyer was at least ten feet tall, with a crystal chandelier hanging above. And the floors were marble. To Josh, her place looked like a palace. There was a long staircase leading upstairs, and a hallway that led to the rest of the downstairs.
“Hachi machi,” he murmured. “This place is insane!”
Brynne just smiled, still never sure what to do when people complimented her house. Sure, she’d worked for all the money herself, but she still never knew how to respond.
“Come on. Bedroom’s upstairs,” she smiled.
“Do I take off my shoes?” Josh asked in bewilderment.
“Baby, I don’t care, the floors are hardwood.”
Josh followed Brynne upstairs, to the biggest bedroom in the house. She had a huge amount of space, a beautiful dark wood bedroom set, and a set of silk sheets. He was in awe of the walk-in closet, which looked like its own tiny bedroom.
He wandered into her bathroom like a lost child, discovering a beautiful, high-tech sort of shower, along with a luxurious jacuzzi tub.
“Whoa…!” he gasped.
“You want me to run us a bath?” Brynne asked him, reading his mind.
“Please,” he nodded, taking his time to look around.
He returned to the bedroom, sitting down on her California king-sized bed as she took off her jacket, stripping down to her underwear. As always, he couldn’t take his eyes off her.
“Your place is… amazing,” he told her.
“Thank you,” she smiled softly.
“They really do pay you well,” Josh remarked.
“Yeah. Kronish is great,” she agreed, heading into the bathroom to get a bath running.
Josh watched as she turned the water on, waiting for the jacuzzi tub to fill.
“Bowling was so fun,” he laughed. “Man. Ray’s girlfriend is really nice.”
“Yeah, she is,” Brynne smiled. “It was really sweet when she told me how pretty I am… I had to make sure she knew I thought the same of her.”
Josh began taking his clothes off, nervous about where to put them as he stood in his underwear in the bathroom.
“You can just set them on the counter,” Brynne told him, as she walked in, long strawberry blonde hair pinned up in a clip.
He set the clothes on the white marble counter, gulping when he saw who he’d just recently realized was his girlfriend. He knew he’d never quite get over how she looked naked, not even in a sexual manner, but just out of sheer awe. She slowly stepped into the bathtub, sighing as she threw her head back. Josh slid his underwear down before climbing in and joining her, sitting across from her in the warm water.
“Why don’t we do stuff at your place?” he wondered.
Brynne felt guilty as she tried to explain, watching as he tried to come up with his own rationalization.
“Do you not want me here?” he wondered. “Cuz, I could understand that, I mean… I’d probably make a mess of this place.”
“No, no, it’s not that,” she sighed, trying to explain.
“I mean, your place is awesome,” he scoffed.
“I know,” she sighed, “That’s the problem. My place has the jacuzzi tub, and the art I paid someone to buy for me, and the silk sheets. It’s a total bachelor pad.”
“What’s wrong with that?” Josh wondered, rubbing at his beard.
“It’s… It’s a good place to bring a date. It’s a good place to hook up,” she thought.
“What’s so bad about that?” Josh asked with a smile.
“I like your place better,” she said exhaustedly.
“What’s so cool about my place?” he wondered.
“It’s nice! And your parents are nice! Your place has more personality. My place is just meant to look good,” Brynne expressed.
“I think your place has personality,” Josh said softly. “I think it looks like you because it looks good.”
She smiled, appreciating the sentiment as she tried to rephrase her thoughts.
“Yeah, but… My place is for dating. Your place is for marriage,” she pointed out.
Josh looked at her curiously, a surprised smile on his face as he processed what she’d just said.
“You… You’d marry me?” he asked her.
“Yeah, I think so!” she nodded. “Some day.”
He smiled with immense emotion in his eyes, understanding what she meant now.
“I’m… I’m glad we both feel the same way,” he murmured, watching her as she moved so that she was next to him.
“I love you, Josh,” she said as he wrapped his arm around her.
“I love you, Brynne,” he said for the second time, grinning as she leaned in to kiss him.
He thought life couldn’t get any better than this. He moved his hand so that it was on her cheek, slightly reaching up into her hair as his lips mingled with hers for a moment.
“God, you’re just… You’re just so beautiful,” he whined affectionately as he pulled away.
He stopped to look at her, to admire her, taking in her perfect physique beneath the bubbles, and her beautiful face. Brynne sighed, cupping his face in her hands as he smiled up at her with the widest eyes she’d ever seen. He genuinely couldn’t stop smiling; he looked giddy just to be looking at her.
“You really are the sweetest, most handsome boy in the world,” she whispered.
“I love you so much,” he sighed.
“I promise I love you more, Josh Futturman,” she said with satisfaction.
“Brynne?” he piped up, looking up at her with pleading eyes.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“I want my mommy,” he mumbled, nuzzling his head into her body.
“Oh, come here, baby,” she said, turning her body so that he could lay his head on her bare chest.
Josh excitedly rested his head chest as she held him, neatly stroking his hair as he let out a happy whine, never wanting to leave that position for the rest of his life.
*****
Brynne tried to tip-toe and move around her bedroom quietly as she woke up for work. But as soon as she had gotten out of bed and carefully replaced her warm body with a pillow for Josh to lay on, he had woken up.
“Baby?” he sat up sleepily. “Where you going?”
She could tell he was only half awake.
“Go back to bed, baby, it’s your day off,” she whispered.
“No… I wanna say ‘bye’ to you,” he protested through a yawn.
She just sighed in amusement, making the most of the situation. Fully aware that he was watching, she turned on the bathroom light so he could just barely see her, playfully stripping down to nothing in front of him before shutting the bathroom door. Josh sighed dreamily as he fell back onto the bed, smiling up at the ceiling.
“I have the best life ever.”

Behind The Campaign :: Louis Tomlinson
Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson released his debut album in 2020 through Sony but moved to BMG for his second album, Faith In The Future, in November 2022. Lisa Wilkinson, director of UK marketing (new recordings) at BMG, explains how they looked to reposition him in the market, what learnings were coming from his live success as well as his own festival, why his merchandise strategy directly informed his multi-formatted record release strategy, how they were able to build him without mass radio support, where a wider male audience was targeted this time round, why Twitter remains his most powerful social media platform and how a highly vocal and engaged fanbase was nurtured further and directly involved in the campaign.

1. Coming to BMG for his second solo album
This is his first album with BMG. His debut album, Walls in 2020, was with Syco Music [via Sony]. That was off the back of X Factor with Simon Cowell.
He had done a couple of more commercial singles – one with Steve Aoki [‘Just Hold On’] and one with Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals [‘Back To You’]. They were really successful streaming singles, but that’s not who Louis is. For the boys in One Direction, the ones that have been successful and the songs that have been successful are the ones that have stayed super pop and commercial. Louis did that but it’s just not who he is.
I think he felt, in that structure, that he just wasn’t getting the support to be who he wanted to be. That’s exactly why people come to us. It’s an artist services deal and we’re there to support you and advise you.
You can see from his live business and his merchandise business – and every other thing that Louis does – that there is an incredible fanbase there for him.
When they [Syco] released Walls, they achieved 14,000 units in week one and got to number 4 in Q1 in January 2020. We thought that just didn’t feel reflective of what was happening [around him].
We went and saw him at various venues on his world tour. We went to New York and saw those two shows and we went to Italy and watched his Milan stadium show in front of 30,000 people.
You’re looking and you’re thinking, “Those numbers don’t make any sense. How on Earth did you fumble that?” We were confident that we could do better than that.
He had a signing dinner in October 2021 and then his world tour started in February 2000 [sic], which was the delayed tour [due to the pandemic]. It went all the way through to September, pretty much nonstop.
They sold half a million tickets that year. All the while he’s on tour, he’s still making the album.
‘Out Of My System’ was released as a DSP-focused track before the album. It’s the rockiest and heaviest track on the album. He came straight off stage, went into a vocal booth off the side of the stage [to record it]. Because of the energy, he was so fired up. It was a difficult process because it was creating an album on the road.
He wanted to make an album for live. It was a totally different experience for him. Covid hit just a few months after Walls dropped so the tour was out of the question.
Before we started working on the album campaign, he did a show at Crystal Palace Bowl, which was the first incarnation of his Away From Home festival that he’s created and curated, which is for up-and-coming indie bands.
He gave away 8,000 tickets in August 2021 when we could start doing outdoor things again. I was there and was thinking, “There’s something big going on here.” The fans were so committed and dedicated.
Considering this is someone who hasn’t had real radio support or is seen in celebrity magazines or on social posts, this is a huge phenomenon.
That continued into the tour.
2 The centrality of merchandise
We started on the creative really early and that was a key factor in how successful the album was. We knew early on from discussions with management that his merch business was berserk. We knew what kind of fans he has. With their merch drops during Covid, they played around with the strategy. They got in a really cool design team and they would just do regular drops – limited-edition releases and you’ll never see it again. Everything just sold out constantly.
That informed the whole product strategy.
We knew we had to make product that’s limited in its nature because it encourages demand.
The fans just want it. It’s got to look amazing; it’s got to have Louis looking phenomenal because they just adore him; it’s got to be priced right; and there’s got to be a selection. So it’s more stuff, but less of it.
Instead of treating it like a music product, treat it like merchandise. We absolutely nailed that strategy.
We sold 35,000 records and around 2,500 units were streaming. A good chunk of that was physical album sales. It’s going to inform our strategy for any other albums we do with him.
We did 19 products in the end. We did a standard CD, we did a CD ‘zine which had 82 pages of beautiful content and photos, we had a picture disc vinyl, we did around eight different exclusive retail vinyl albums, we had a splatter vinyl for HMV, we had a colour one for Amazon, we had a clear one for Spotify, we had several more for Urban Outfitters and Target, we had an indie retailers one.
It was a collector thing: how many of the vinyl albums have you managed to get? We did a double deluxe vinyl for D2C. We did cassettes where the artwork joined together when you got all three. They were embossed and glowed in the dark. Louis has Easter eggs that he drops everywhere. The number 28 is like a lucky number, so you see 28 dotted around places. The same with 369 – he uses it in many iterations. If you had a UV light, you’d be able to see ‘3’, ‘6’ and ‘9’ embossed on each cassette.
3 The radio conundrum
We have seen historically that it has been tricky to get radio for him – but not because of any artist proposition issue. It’s just sonically that he wants to do something different to what radio wants to play.
It’s tricky because it falls through the gaps a little bit with what he wants to do. We’ve always looked at it as: let’s just assume there are zero promo opportunities at radio, TV and press. Let’s just take out promo entirely.
What you have got is a global, engaged, fanatical fanbase. You can do more with that than you can with those other things if you don’t have fans.
I would much rather have an artist who’s got an absolutely berserk global fanbase and that gets absolutely no support from traditional media – because you can work with that – than have an artist that’s not really got a particularly big fanbase but radio loves them and TV loves them. What does that matter if you’ve not got the fans?
We did always want to get promo because we would love to be able to expand Louis’ fanbase. But you’ve got to compete against Harry [Styles] and Niall [Horan]. They’re the first people you’ve got to compete against because, to play three One Direction members on the radio, I don’t know if radio stations would. Then you’ve got the sonic battle as well where he wants to keep it pretty raw.
The first single was ‘Bigger Than Me’, which is a big song to sing. It was a good bridge between the last album and this album. It gave the fans what they wanted.
We had really good feedback from radio. They played it to Clara [Amfo, Radio 1] without telling her who it was. She loved it and she did actually play it as one of the hottest tracks of the week. Greg James’s producers said it was brilliant. They absolutely adored it. Matt Edmondson and Mollie King’s team loved it. They thought it was great. But it got blocked at playlist conversations. It was like, Come on!
That was really disappointing because, pre-release, we were getting incredible feedback from producers, but we just couldn’t get it through the playlisting. We’d always planned for it not to go on radio, but if it got on radio that’d be just a brilliant bonus. So it didn’t harm our campaign strategy at all.
He’s too pop for indie stations and he’s too indie for the BBC [Radio 1]. It’s frustrating, but he’s making the music he wants to make and the fans love it. So what do you do?
‘Silver Tongues’ came out just before the album dropped, which was the official second single. That bridged the gap between those two singles. It was much more guitar based. It was up-tempo but it wasn’t too indie.
On the day that the album was released, fans bombarded Greg’s show on the 10 Minute Takeover [on the Radio 1 breakfast show]. And he played it! It was lovely but you could tell it was done like, “OK, I’ve done it now. Go away.” Which is just so sad because his demographic is right in that lane. It’s 18-25.
4 Targeting a male audience
‘Out Of My System’ was released as a DSP track, and that was really to show a different side of what was going to be on the album. It was the hardest one, the rockiest one, the speediest one, it was all about the band. It is one of the best streaming tracks on the album; it has really taken hold.
That was really just to get the male audience because we knew from the analytics we had prior to release that, although his demographics on social media are largely female, wider research that we did with our media teams said that he has a male fanbase. They’re just consumers. If they were to hear him on the radio, they wouldn’t turn it off – that kind of thing – but they’re not necessarily following him on social media. We knew that there was an opportunity there to reach another audience.
5 Building his songwriting profile
We just gave him creative freedom. Louis is really smart. He was the most proficient songwriter within One Direction. He has more songwriting credits than any of the other four members. We know that he’s a talented songwriter so it was just putting him together with people who can give him the confidence, like this album did, to move him out of his comfort zone.
There are some tracks on there that he will say were inspired by people like DMA’s and their album The Glow. ‘All This Time’ and ‘She Is Beauty We Are World Class’ have that slightly more experimental sound to them, which I think took a few people by surprise. He has really incredible writers like David Sneddon, Robert Harvey, George Tizzard and Rick Parkhouse. He has said multiple times in interviews that they gave him the confidence to have fun with it.
I don’t think he expected to get the amount of tracks that he did. It was a big album with 16 tracks. Then we put another three tracks on a digital deluxe edition in week one which shifted another 15,000 units globally.
6 Targeting the press
One of the big wins we had on this campaign was the NME coming on board. They were not interested last time. There was no music press. So one of our key targets on this campaign was to get music press.
We really wanted to get a Rolling Stone cover but the one we wanted to go for Harry was on. So we shifted and we retargeted the NME. We took them to Louis’ Away From Home festival in Malaga [in summer 2022]. He sold it out – 15,000 tickets in 24 hours.
NME did various interviews with Louis for their website and for their socials. They spoke to the bands that were on. It was a real seal of approval. And from that point onwards, we had nothing but great press from NME.
They supported everything – all the singles and we got a four-star review of the album. It was not like we bought it, but it was because we put them in the right place to really see him.
7 Boosting the digital strategy
There were two real strategic decisions that we made at the beginning that affected the outcome: one was the physical product strategy; and the other was the digital marketing strategy. If you don’t have traditional promo, and you’ve got an ardent global fanbase, digital is the most important way of getting your marketing across.
When we first started working with management, they said to us that there were some things that were non-negotiable. Everything should be fair, so we shouldn’t feel like we’re only offering things to fans of a certain demographic or to fans in a certain territory. It’s global. It’s got to be accessible. It’s got to be affordable. And it’s got to be innovative.
They are so good at doing things that break records and break the internet.
They did their livestream in 2020 and Louis sold over 200,000 tickets. It was the most-streamed livestream of a male solo artist during lockdown.
They had quite high expectations of the digital campaign going forward.
We spent quite a long time, about three months, prior to launching trying to figure out how we were going to break the internet.
With #LT369, we trended within about five minutes worldwide of that hashtag going out. When you tweeted the hashtag, it took you to a mini site where a Twitter map was starting to flag where people’s locations were. Over the course of the teaser week, the flags started to fall away but would leave ‘BTM’ which stood for ‘Bigger Than Me’, so we were teasing the single name.
We did a playlist builder and it was generated on socials as a cassette mixtape. You could share it and design your own cover on it. These were just things that really got the fans talking and engaged.
8 QR code and interactive community map at his Away From Home festival
The interactive map was linked to a QR code. We put QR codes around the festival site with absolutely no explanation as to what they were. But the fans notice everything.
We put the track titles from the album in pictures. They were really, really hidden. It took the fans two days [to work it out], but they observe everything.
Everyone started using the QR code. It took them to a website. We hadn’t announced at that point that the album was going to drop or that it was coming. It was a real mystery but that started the chatter going and we started getting trending hashtags for the album.
9 Twitter as his main platform and setting him up on TikTok
Twitter is his biggest platform [with 35.7 million followers]. What’s really interesting about that is that it’s super conversational, and you can see what they’re doing – as opposed to other platforms like Instagram and Facebook. He’s probably one of the only artists that still uses it as their primary platform.
He is really active on Twitter. He will go through bouts where he doesn’t post but then he’ll go on a reply rampage. He just replies randomly to people and does 40 in an hour. The fans go absolutely wild. Twitter was our key platform for launching initiatives and activations
There is a HQ account on TikTok and it crashed part of TikTok when it launched. Management love knowing that they crash things. We “crashed” our D2C site within minutes. There was a queue of 200,000 people in the D2C store at one point within the first hour of launching.
We didn’t technically crash the D2C store but, because of the size of the queue, it shut the storefront down which is what it does, and then forms a queue so that it doesn’t crash. We went on there and could see there were 200,000 people queuing.
10 Chart battle with Bruce Springsteen and the power of in-stores
I don’t think he ever thought he wasn’t getting a number 1 album. We beat Bruce Springsteen, we did it in Q4 and we doubled the numbers that Sony did week one last time [on Walls].
When we were in week one, and we were battling out with Bruce Springsteen, we said that there were an easy 3,000 units there if we put on four Banquet Records shows [at Pryzm in West London] and bundle the album with the tickets.
Every time they put a show on sale, you could see the numbers on the webpage. There were 200,000 people on there, even people who were not in the UK. They were ridiculous numbers.
It was more than Banquet has ever done. We sold out three shows in under a minute.
That was on release week. We had a really solid release week strategy so we knew that we had three shows in the pocket with Banquet.
We had two tracks that had not been released at that point, that weren’t on the album, that weren’t on the deluxe and that hadn’t been released as singles. We created a £4.99 digital album that had another two brand new tracks on it. You could only buy it as an album product and it was a D2C download.
We sold 15,000 of those globally in week one. We sold 6,000 in the UK. We did 3,000 extra records with Banquet in week one via the shows. We did an additional 3,000 with signed product that we put on sale in week one, because there were no other signed products in the market.
The digital super deluxe did 6,000 units. We ran multiple competitions. We gave away a signed guitar with HMV. We did a golden ticket to the tour with Crash Records.
We did a two-day pop up in Camden [North London] and Amazon contributed with signage. We did a one-day one in New York as well. We sold pop-up exclusive merch and we re-sleeved splatter vinyl with a London pop-up sleeve. We did around 2,000 of those. We did the same with the CDs and re-sleeved some CDs with the London pop-up. They were unique and fans could not get it again so they flew out the door. We had 3,000 people show up for it. That was full capacity.
We premiered the video for ‘Silver Tongues’, the second single, at the pop-up. That was the weekend of release but the single, which came out earlier that week, the video dropped on the Saturday.
11 Stationhead and Tim’s Twitter Listening Party
Stationhead is an interesting concept and we’ve done it a few times now. It’s linked to streaming, so every time you play a track within the show, it’s technically streamed by the amount of people that are listening to the show. Louis did one of those and, in terms of Stationhead’s history, it was pretty successful.
We got an email from Tim Burgess’s team saying they wanted to do a Tim’s Twitter Listening Party with Louis. They had such a good rapport and the fans were asking for it.
Beyond the chart units from the streams, it is the noise that it creates online that is more important to us.
It was one of their biggest re-listening streams, which is amazing when you think about the demographic that they have.
12 Fan-made Spotify Canvases
Across socials, we asked people to rework the ‘Bigger Than Me’ artwork. As a way of getting people to go and stream the track, we would change the Canvas semi-regularly so there was a reason for people to go and play it to see if their Canvas was one of the ones that had been selected.
The only downside is Canvases are only seven-seconds long. So if you go and you watch for seven seconds, it’s not your artwork and you come off, it can affect your average listening rate.
We were mindful of that. Our strategy was to do that post-pitching for any real major lists so that they weren’t looking at the data.
He has got really good listening data. It’s around 15 plays per listener which is way over the average. The save rate to libraries is huge and shows that he has really got a good lean-in listenership.
13 Documentary and the next steps
He’s going back on tour. He is back on another world tour from April starting in Asia and then he goes to North America. Then he comes back to Europe, culminating in an O2 show in London this time around in November. He previously did Wembley Arena.
The documentary [All Of Those Voices] premiered on 16th March and then went to worldwide cinemas on 22nd March for a week.
Charlie Lightening made it and went on tour with Louis. He had previously made the Liam Gallagher documentary [As It Was]. Historically he’s done most of Louis’ music videos as well. It was only this time around that we wanted to branch out and see if we could do something a little bit different.
It goes from the band through to his personal life and where he is now. There is a massive focus on the tour. It will blow people away to see what the Louis franchise looks like. This kid has an amazing franchise and most people just don’t have any clue about it.
The recordings business is such a small part of what he does. Obviously it helps to have records out to sell merch and to go on tour. That’s where he really excels.
I’ve never worked on a project where the fans are like they are. You get to see your visions immediately. You get to see the reactions immediately. You get to see the activation work immediately. That is such a buzz.
On most other projects, you launch something and then you have to market it and push it. This was more about pre-strategy, because you know that when you launch something, if you get it right, it’s going to work and you’ll get to see that reaction immediately. That was so much fun. Campaigns like that are rare.

How the Kingdom Lights Shine
Artemisia Palace has the grandest, most opulent dining hall Kai has ever seen, and that’s saying a lot. He’s an emperor; he has been to state dinners in every country and nearly every city on the blue Earth. He’s seen crystalline cutlery and wax candle chandeliers and food so impossible one daren’t eat it.
But Luna takes the cake. Literally, they have taken cake and transformed it into a fifty-tier, ten-metre-tall sculpture, each layer separated by gold lace that should be physically incapable of holding such weight. A fountain flows in the centre, spurting out creamy gravity-defiant chocolate which falls in ribbon-like swirls into a golden basin.
And that’s just the cake. The decorations are excessive, the entertainment is sheer magic and the servers bow to all. No doubt a portion of the spectacle is accomplished through glamour, and that fact makes Kai uncomfortable.
Cinder, sitting at the head of the table, looks frazzled by it all. When she’d asked the chefs to prepare a meal for her and her closest friends, it was unlikely she’d anticipated this.
Her eyes are screaming at him. Feeling playful, he smiles as if clueless, shrugs and turns back to his diamond-studded parfait.
“She’s not quite in her element,” comes the voice seated at his right.
Kai switches his attention from the bowl—contemplating how the diamonds are edible—to the rouge beauty next to him. Her bright hair is pulled back into a simple ponytail with a braid crowning her head. Her dress is emerald, a similar cut to what she wore at Cinder’s coronation last week. The only ornamentation is stunning dangling crystals adorning her ears and her natural charm.
He laughs. “Not even slightly.”
“Sorry,” she says with that distinct French accent, although more rural than the Parisian diplomats he’s familiar with. “I meant to say hello, but someone”—she juts out a thumb at her neighbour; Winter, enrapturing the attention of all nearby—“won’t let me breathe.”
Kai smiles. “Not an issue.”
“So…” She cups her chin with her hand, resting a sacrilegious elbow on the table. “You’re the famous Emperor Kaito.”
“And you’re the famous Scarlet Benoit.” He recites the title with a deserved reverence. “I have to say, you’re very well-renowned with this crowd.”
“I’d better be.”
A retinue of servants approach the table in perfect unison, like synchronised swimmers of the culinary pool. They kneel beside the guests with a tray of merlot in gold and silver chalices perched on their heads. From across the table, Cress is flapping her hands with a spluttered, “I’m not eighteen!” while Thorne, despite not being of legal drinking age in his native country, is already a third of the way through a glass.
Kai and Scarlet simultaneously decline, more so that the server can be freed from this cramped position.
“I suppose you’re used to all this,” says Scarlet, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Not really.” He takes a bite from his parfait. The diamonds crunch under his teeth, melting into a syrupy honey on his tongue. “Even the Earthen elites don’t go all out like this.”
They share a look, and together: “Lunars.”
It sparks muffled laughter, knowing that most of their peers on this table are Lunar. It’s nice, still, to have some solidarity with a fellow Earthen, to both recognise how foreign this mingling of cultures would have been to their untrained minds just months ago.
Scarlet takes a bite of the pistachio sponge in her bowl, which is surrounded by dark chocolate trees and a matcha crumble moss. It’s the perfect scene of a fairy-tale forest, and yet Scarlet still mutters, “too many eggs.”
Based on the lemon cake she made for Cinder’s coronation, he’ll take her word for it.
She discards her spoon in her bowl and turns to him. “So, I assume you and Cinder are…together.”
“Absolutely.”
A grin. “Hm. She had the most obvious crush on you. I’m glad to know it was reciprocated.”
He wipes his brow with his sleeve, a touch embarrassed. “I was likely worse. Torin probably thought I’d returned to early puberty for how much I gushed about her.” Scarlet is still, essentially, a stranger, yet there’s something about her so honest and comforting, like a cup of hot chocolate from a kind old woman on a blustery day, that he has no qualms in baring these secrets. “Still,” he adds, contemplative, “not as much as Wolf to you.”
She rolls her eyes, but it’s a tender gesture. “He’s the worst.”
Wolf is across from them, gazing longingly at Scarlet. Iko arranged the seating plan so guests could interact with those more unfamiliar, and Wolf is evidently not impressed.
Scarlet notices his superglued gaze and blows him a kiss. He turns red.
Kai snorts. “You’re evil.”
“I know. That’s love.” Something flickers in her eyes as she leans back in her chair. “Speaking of which, may I ask when you realised you loved Cinder? After all, you were actively trying to track her down with your military. It makes for an, euh, unlikely romance.”
No one—asides from Levana—has asked him yet if he loves Cinder. But Scarlet is keenly observant. It’s not a matter of if he has fallen in love, but when.
“Here, on Luna, while I was trapped inside this prison for a pal—” he clamps his jaw shut, wishing to retract his words. Yes, his confinement to his suite in the palace had been tortuous, but Scarlet had actually been imprisoned. And actually tortured. “Um, while the others were in the outer sectors,” he amends, “I had a lot of time on my hands to think. I worried about her constantly, and I guess at some point it just ticked over in my brain. It wasn’t a sharp realisation. It was just fact. I was in love with her.”
He finds his eyes latching onto Cinder unbidden. She’s in a beautiful gown and a glimmering tiara, courtesy of one Carswell Thorne, and scoffing at one of Jacin’s snide comments. “I am in love with her.”
“I hope she knows that.”
A flush covers his ears. This is revenge for mocking Wolf, he knows, because the florid is far more obvious on Kai’s pale skin than Wolf’s tanned.
To be frank, he hasn’t told Cinder. Not because he doubts his feelings, rather, because he doesn’t know how deep hers are. It’s all new, and he doesn’t want to scare her off with premature confessions.
Scarlet blessedly doesn’t mock him. She folds her hands over the table. “You know, Cinder has been treated horribly these past months. Actually, her whole life, I think,” she includes, scowling. “I’m sure you know it well: the terrible, salacious claims they made about her in the newsfeeds. And people do believe it. In my own town, Rieux, when the footage from the ball was released, they said—ugh—disgusting, perverted things.”
He sighs, knowing all too well what was levelled against his girl. “Right. Being cyborg and Lunar. How appalling.”
“Cyborg and Lunar, yes, and also”—she looks at him very seriously—“how much they wanted to take her home and use her.”
His face contorts. “...Use her?”
A grim nod.
Kai has to bite his tongue to stop himself from thumping the underside of the table. He knew this, minutely, logically, yes he knew. But he didn’t…he couldn’t…
“Unfortunately, people haven’t changed their opinions yet. Particularly when it comes to your relationship. You are ‘the victim,’” she air quotes, “and her ‘the predator.’”
“They’re vile. The whole lot of them.”
“Of course.” A platter of fruits is presented before them, and Scarlet lets out an awed, “real food.” She nabs a strawberry, sucking out its sweetness. After a bite, she says, “I know I don’t know you very well, but I do feel I know you to some extent.”
“Most people feel that way,” he assures, “my being a public figure since birth and all.”
Her lips purse into a smile. “I actually had a poster of you on my wall when I was fifteen. My grand-mère cut it off—”
“—a cereal box?" he half chuckles, half grimaces. “That was never a licenced product, by the way.”
Iko, four seats to his left, leans her chair onto its hind legs and calls, “I had that cereal box too! And a fan club membership—number one fan!”
“Stop eavesdropping!” Scarlet yells back.
“Can’t help that I have super high-radius hearing.” She swings back to all four legs with a clomp as Cinder corrects, “Peony had the membership.” “She said I could share!”
Kai snickers.
When he returns to Scarlet, she is shaking her head, carrying on as though uninterrupted. “I put that poster on my wall because I thought you were cute, but also respectful and good-hearted,” she recalls plainly.
Although this praise is not uncommon, Scarlet strikes him as someone not easily impressed, and a flutter of bashfulness thrums in his chest.
“Meeting you now, I still hold that opinion. That’s why I believe you will be good to Cinder.” She plucks another strawberry from the tray, carefully tearing off the leaves. “Still, if I was unsure of your relationship status, how much more so will the public be? How much more so will the rumours persist.”
Sure, they haven’t announced anything. But they aren’t the only ones: Scarlet and Wolf’s relationship was confirmed through loving glances. Jacin’s arm around Winter apparently made it official last week, and the only surprise is that Kai learnt that they weren’t already dating. Cinder bumped into Thorne kissing Cress in the hallway and warned him not to mess with her feelings, which received a grave: “I’m not. I love her.”
(When Cinder relayed the tale to the others, Kai mentally patted himself on the back. His pep talk in the Rampion podship had penetrated deeper past Thorne’s defences than Kai had ever hoped.)
Still, Scarlet is right. The difference is clear: Cinder and Kai are the ones the public cares about.
She extends the fruit to him. “Cinder doesn’t deserve those comments, does she?”
Kai digs his nails into his hips. Isn’t it obvious to everyone in a ten-kilometre range that he loves Cinder? Even embarrassingly so, as Levana and Torin and Dr. Erland had made quite plain?
But people are people, and people persecute.
He kissed Cinder in front of Scarlet before the coronation, he recalls. They kissed on the Rampion in front of their friends, even when they hadn’t defined their relationship because commitment was too optimistic, the environment too fickle.
They have something now they hadn’t had back then—permanence, however strange and new and infeasible. He doesn’t even know how it can last when they will be rulers of different lands, doesn’t know if Cinder will even want to become empress. Doesn’t know if Cinder wants children when that is an essential requirement of being his wife. He doesn’t know her favourite colour or song or netdrama or much of anything about her.
And yet, in spite of every spite, it still feels permanent. There is no doubt.
He accepts the strawberry from Scarlet and bites down hard on its seeded sweetness.
———
“Long live the queen! Long live the queen!”
Cinder is considering throwing up. At least that would expel the butterflies from her stomach.
No, butterflies are how she feels with Kai—happy and fluttery and safe. Right now in her gut, squawking, belligerent crows are playing frisbee.
“They’re waiting for you, Your Majesty,” says Kinney, as he and another guard open the large double doors to the balcony.
Damned audio interface. The chanting is deafening, yet she’s forced to hear his whisper. If she pretends she didn’t hear it, maybe she won’t have to go out at all.
“Your Majesty?”
Cinder nods, or maybe shakes her head, before a force starts to push her forward. It could be Iko fed up with her nervousness, or even someone glamouring her, or just her own legs taking master of her body. Nevertheless, one moment she’s safely concealed inside, and the next she’s towering above thousands of her subjects.
Cheers erupt. Flags and banners are waved and the chant starts up again. “Long live the queen!”
The queen! She hasn’t even mustered up the courage to tell Kai she loves him, much less know how to lead these people! And she is responsible for every single face down there, not to mention the million others not gathered in this courtyard. There are those congregating in the streets of Artemisia; huddled together in public squares in the outer sectors.
How it can be so invigorating to stand in front of a crowd and galvanise them into rioting, yet paralysing to address them afterwards? Is it the massive drop? A UFO of doubt sucking her up in its beam?
Warning —Erratic heart rate. Recommended course of action is: Slow breaths.
Commencing in 3, 2,
Deep breath in. Deep breath out.
She is their queen, so she will stand unbalanced on this balcony in a ridiculously costly gown and diadem instead of her cargo pants and gloves and be their queen.
Cinder smiles awkwardly, and waves, (awkwardly), and either they are particularly forgiving or cannot see her strain from this high up, because they cheer even louder.
In. Out.
Something soft grazes her elbow, coaxing it to slow down, to take a more natural glide. It travels up her arm to firmly grasp her hand.
The crowd reaches an impassioned frenzy for Emperor Kaito of the Eastern Commonwealth. The last she knew, he is supposed to be with their friends in the ballroom.
“What are you doing here?” she whispers.
All the beauty of New Beijing Palace has travelled here, in this moment, over the landscapes of his face. “Hi.”
The crowd adjust easily, shouting, “Long live the emperor! Long live the queen!”
Her eyes magnify on their joint hands like a zoom lens. He’s never done this before in public public, even at her coronation where his polite kiss on the hand was taken as etiquette more than intimacy.
“Long live us, hey?” he murmurs, lips a ventriloquist for the cameras.
She emits a shaky laugh. “Let’s hope.”
Kai comes closer. Cinder lifts her cheek in wait of another whisper, only for him to settle a dizzying kiss on her temple.
Internally, she’s toppling over the balcony rail. But outwardly she’s frozen, deafened by the nuclear explosion of sound below.
“I think they approve,” he muses into her hair, gloating.
There is no doubt.
Cinder attempts to pull away—check his face for traces of smugness, surely knowing this would bewilder her. Kai slides an arm around her waist so she can’t go too far.
“You just want your face on the cover of every newsfeed,” she berates with a grin.
“I want us on the cover of every newsfeed.”
The people beneath them blur into nothing, the sounds become wind. When he winks at her, it’s a far more picture-worthy moment than the kiss. One she will bottle up and unscrew and drink before she goes to bed that night.
Long live the emperor! Long live the queen!
Cinder buries their joint hands into the folds of her skirt, suddenly a lot less nervous. Suddenly she isn’t ruling alone, and neither is he.
Long may they live.
