I've been reading A LOT of books lately, the last book I read was The Fate of Stars (part of my pride book reads) and it was alright. If I don't give into the urge to download all of YOI and watch it on the plane on Wednesday, I'll be reading one of Sierra Simone's queer romances (The Last Crimes of Peregrine Hind or The Fae Queen's Captive).
Current obsession:
Aforementioned smut novels and FOB and TOTK because the only things getting me through grad school besides my support system are video games, smut novels, and music. I'm dangling by a fucking thread.

•Amount of Sleep: 😬 listen if i'm ALLOWED to i'll sleep for 10+ hours and i do this on the weekends. but work makes this impossible, and also i dread waking up to go to work in the morning, so i make that even better by only sleeping like 5-6 hours to try and wring out more free time from the day. i slept 6 hours last night and 4 the night before that. rip.

i love rewatching firebringer because you can hear the audience get dead silent for the chorn part. all the laughter after that part is either slightly quieter than usual or much more hysterical than usual (because of the leftover shock of chorn). can you imagine. you spend months excited to watch starkid's newest musical about prehistoric society and in the last ten minutes it very briefly becomes a beautifully sung scifi opera before it IMMEDIATELY dovetails back into the emotional arc of the show. i would lose my shit.

also just like. more and more, i am convinced that the way i headcanon cosette's personality isn't just interesting for me but is actually canonically supported? like, yes, she's the most classic Blonde(tm) i can think of, but also i think she's always aware of her situation and how she can affect it in a way that marius, bless his heart, just isn't. and i have receipts!
[tried to make this a bulleted list but tumblr mobile apparently CANNOT handle those anymore so! guess we're doing this formatting now]
first off, the entirety of in my life. "what's the matter with you, cosette?" shows a self-awareness that i wouldn't expect from her if she were just her archetype. immediately after, she laments how she doesn't know what her situation is, and it's making her antsy. later, she questions her father about his past, and he blows her off in a way that implies she's asked these questions before. she also criticizes him for seeing her as a child, which he ignores. (specifically i'm thinking of the way she says "i'm no longer a CHILD, and i long for the truth that you know!")
secondly, the general theme in a heart full of love of marius representing doubt and cosette representing stability. see: "i am lost" / "i am found", and "do i dream?" / "i'm awake". later, she actually seems to lead marius to realizing this is real, beginning the "and it's not a dream" line and then letting him join in.
then there's the attack on rue plumet. which, okay, we know i am obsessed with, but also the cosette characterization implied there FASCINATES me. let's go over the events of that song and the previous one from her perspective, shall we? she meets her idiot love-at-first-sight at her gate and has a beautiful duet with him. then, while she's gazing soulfully into his eyes, they hear a scream. he appears to recognize it, identifying the screamer as his friend éponine, who's trying to warn them that someone's coming. (ignoring the possibility that she recognizes the name as her childhood friend's,) marius disappears and immediately her father shows up, panicked about the scream. cosette, without hesitation, shifts tunes to a comforting song, claims that it was HER scream, and then uses her childhood melody to slip in the fact that it was three men she saw that he should look out for.
it's my theory that she does this -- literally and musically aging herself down -- to calm him down, because there's no way she did it out of the joy of her heart: she literally SAYS several songs earlier that she doesn't enjoy being treated as a child. the only reason it DOESN'T calm him down, why it instead makes things worse, is because she accidentally trips over his javert feelings, something she also told us she doesn't know anything about.
and then, of course, there's a heart full of love (reprise). where marius is drowning in his sadness and unanswered questions and cosette tries to pull him out of it. she starts off with their love melody (a heart full of love) and then reminds him, "and it wasn't a dream", which marius actually! starts off with her, instead of her having to pull him into it! she sees how he's feeling, sees how to pull him out of it, and does it successfully! i am a big fan of looking at when characters use leitmotifs and whether they're doing it "on purpose" -- i don't think valjean and javert, for example, use each other's tunes on purpose, i just think they're similar. but cosette is definitely someone who would be aware of what leitmotifs she uses, or as "aware" as a character in a musical can be, and i like that a lot about her!

oh ALSO i recently realized for the first time that hades challenging orpheus to not doubt eurydice on their way back to the surface is... him challenging orpheus to be better than hades himself. just like orpheus will always turn around, hades will always grow jealous again. hades let persephone go to the surface because people were starving but now cannot bear to have her leave him to go to the surface... orpheus lost eurydice to the underworld because she was hungry but now cannot believe she might follow him in the dark again...... i am thinking INTENSELY

Because my brain has decided it’s loving Peter Lynne hours….
Spoilers for up to season 5 of zombies run….
I was just thinking today (and subsequently listened to voodoo child again) about Peter hearing that 5 and Janine were dead. I’m sure he had feelings about Maxine and Sam too but I’ve been focused on 5/Janine. How it must have felt to think your best friend and your ex are dead. What unspoken things did he regret never saying (that he still won’t say because Peter is gonna Peter)? He was so chill in that episode when he sees 5 but how did he actually react when he first heard 5 was alive? I have no idea why my brain is obsessing over this specific scenario today but here we are. Anyway….I really need the rest of season 9 now, thanks

12 – Janela indiscreta, de Cornell Woolrich: Um homem contempla sua vizinhança até suspeitar que um de seus vizinhos cometeu um crime (saiba mais sobre a adaptação que Hitchcock fez do conto).
13 – Me alugo para sonhar, de Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Um vislumbre do realismo mágico de Gabo. Trata-se da história de uma mulher que prevê o futuro através dos sonhos (Leia conselhos de Gabriel Garcia Marquez para escrever ficção).
14 – Minority Report, de Philip. K. Dick: A história se passa em um futuro onde os crimes podem ser previstos por um grupo de pessoas. O protagonista, líder de uma divisão da polícia que evita os crimes, descobre que ele mesmo irá cometer um crime.
15 – O Chamado de Cthulhu, de H.P Lovecraft: Clássico do horror, este conto apresenta um deus antigo que é tentado ser trazido de volta à vida por uma seita. Quer aprender a escrever contos de terror/horror? Leia Lovecraft.
16 – O cobrador, de Rubem Fonseca: Talvez a frase mais célebre da obra de Rubem Fonseca esteja neste conto: “Eu não pago mais nada, cansei de pagar!, gritei para ele, agora eu só cobro!” Trata-se de um personagem indignado com as injustiças da vida e que sai para se vingar.
17 – O gato preto, de Edgar Allan Poe: Um narrador perde o controle por causa de suas bebedeiras, tornando-se perverso. Uma brilhante história sobre a culpa. (Imagine uma oficina literária com Edgar Allan Poe! Já escrevi sobre isso). (Ler conto online).
18 – O jardim dos caminhos que se bifurcam, de Jorge Luis Borges: Retoma o tema do labirinto na obra de Borges. É uma história que inicia-se com uma perseguição e finda com uma abordagem metafísica.
19 – Os assassinos, de Ernest Hemingway: Primoroso por seus diálogos, este conto relata a trajetória de dois assassinos que vão acabar com a vida de um ex-boxeador (ler conto online).
20 – Os mortos, de James Joyce: Essencial para aprender a escrever contos. Nesta obra, o que aparenta ser apenas uma festa sem graça na casa das tias do protagonista. Mas vira uma revelação sobre sua esposa no ápice do conto.
21 – Um dia ideal para os peixes-banana, de J.D. Salinger: Este conto marcou uma virada na vida de Salinger, pois ao enviá-lo para a Revista The New Yorker, foi chamado para um trabalho de edição junto com o editor da publicação. “The King’s Avatar Manhua: Challenger League Arc” has just been announced, releasing every Sunday starting January 30! That is, the new manhua will be starting to adapt the Challenger League!
The original serialization of the new manhua (which is currently at chapter 85, right around Yu Wenzhou’s introduction) will continue to be released once a month on the first Friday of every month.
This is incredibly exciting! Out of all the many TKA adaptations, only the live action has ever adapted the CL (and it made so many changes it was hardly an adaptation at all). The new manhua has been quite faithful to the novel thus far, so I’m looking forward to it!

Because of The King’s Avatar, because of Ye Xiu, we are willing to believe—on December 2 2022, somewhere in the world, there must be an internet cafe called Happy, that will let you push open the door, shake off the snow, and once again begin a legend.
