i really really really love the idea of wei wuxian revolutionizing modern cultivation over breakfast and conceptualizing these different theories simultaneously because the adhd brain has no brakes and the only reason it took him a decade to publish all these ideas was because he could not stick to a single train of thought long enough to finish (verbalizing) it, let alone put it down on paper coherently.
the only reason he even got to publishing them eventually (and enrolling to cultivation theory grad program to get on that track) was because one morning, his undergrad thesis advisor, lan qiren, finally got fed up and sat him down for an early morning progress check-in because it was midterm season and wei wuxian still hadn't decided on a topic.
wei wuxian, fueled by an unhealthy amount of redbull and three all-nighters, finally word vomits all his 'convoluted' ideas which he'd thought were uselessly obvious and redundant (because he's gone over these like a bajillion times, it's very plain-as-day to him, so he probably just hasn't read the articles that say these exact things).
lan qiren, teacup frozen halfway to his mouth: ...first of all, i only understood half of how you got to these conclusions, which only means they are indeed too convoluted and will need to be pared down; secondly: you have never mentioned any of these ideas before. why.
wei wuxian: oh. haven't i? oh well, i just thought, xyz, because, obviously, abcde. which is really what the 2 centuries old law on ghjkl was alluding to, right? and so, logically, xyz.
lan qiren: [mind blown, screaming, good gods this is the same child who's always tardy and spent freshman year pulling on the metaphorical pigtails of my straight-laced nephew?!?!??!??!?!] ..again, why...how have you never even spoken or submitted these ideas?
wei wuxian: because!!! they're so obvious!! surely, it's been published somewhere already? i can't be the only one to connect these dots, surely??
lan qiren: incredibly, you are. no one else has even thought to question tradition nor pursued more thoughts on the law of ghjkl, with half as much...sound arguments as you seem to have. in the past century, the focus of modern cultivation has tended towards practical uses and tools, some fine-tuning, perhaps. not entirely new theories.
wei wuxian: huh....
lan qiren, sighing, feeling a migraine: your problem with your thesis is not a lack of focus or ingenuity, but likely to be more a lack of recent, evidentiary sources. you will need to become very familiar with the university archives and dig deep for sources that will back up every argument you make.
he jots down notes on a paper. "you will also need to strictly adhere to the structure and methodology of these articles, especially given how radical your thesis will be. if you are diligent enough, you may just be able to submit your thesis without too much of a delay." he slides the list of materials to a gaping wei wuxian. "depending on your output then, we can discuss the possibility of submitting this for peer review."
"peer review." wei wuxian repeats. "as in, that thing where some uppity committee of old coots put their stamp of approval for it to become the reading materials of undergrads like me. you're joking."
lan qiren chooses to ignore the sentiment about peer review committees being uppity old coots, especially considering how he can't completely deny it on account of some of his colleagues, but also as a member said peer review committee, he isn't exactly pleased about being lumped in the same category.
wei wuxian backtracks at his unamused look. "right, you're not joking, of course you're not." he slowly inches the list towards himself. "right, yes, i guess i'll uh, get to it then. ok bye."
----
idk, just, waves hand at wei wuxian candidly explaining new modern cultivation theories over cheerios at 2 in the afternoon to lwj who's trying to help him structure his grad thesis, getting mind blow dick hard at how this messy genius who's talking with his mouth full of half eaten cereal is the object of his affection....
wwx: --oh, oops, your highlighter fell
lwj: mn
wwx: ...aren't you gonna get that?
lwj: it's fine; i'll pick it up later. finish your thought.
wwx: right... i'll pick it up for you!
lwj, fighting for his life, trying to think unsexy thoughts: NO! sit. finish your meal, and then your thought.

The lights of the bamboo house were still lit even at this hour and the doors cracked to allow the summer night wind to blow through, but that was no guarantee Ming Fan was still awake.
Luo Binghe’s hands gripped tighter around the medicine chest he’d received earlier from a Qian Cao disciple. Ming Fan had been difficult when they’d both been disciples, and was now doubly so now. It could have been easily blamed on his unstable cultivation, but Luo Binghe feared it was something else. Even at the door, the uneasiness made him hesitate. Lamplight striped gold across his face as he gazed through the cracked door.
Ming Fan sat by one of the lamps, looking unnervingly fragile, staring tiredly at the moths fluttering around the golden glow. As if in a trance, his hand rose and softly closed around one of the creatures. He brought it close to his face and examined it between the cage of his fingers. “All you want is warmth and light,” Luo Binghe heard him murmur, “but it’s so easy for you to burn, isn’t it? To destroy yourself over something you could get even from a distance.” A tired laugh and those thin fingers released the moth to flutter back to the lamp. “Foolish.”
this scene has been living in my head rent free for so long (and on my computer) so I’ve finally drawn out how I envisioned it

Don't stop me, but Song Lan is the most miserable person in MDZS!
His whole family and friends in Baixue Temple got massacred for literally no reason (not because of war in world domination scenario or even debt of karma! But Just because of a villain's vicious mind!).
His eyes were ruined by the villain, his Daoist Partner Xiao Xingchen was forced to have guilty conscience and gouged his eyes for him. Not only that, after searching for years, Song Lan can only die under Xiao Xingchen, being silent, because he didn't have the heart to let Xiao Xingchen knows it was him who was killed.
However, The person he cherishes, Xiao Xingchen, someone he was willing to die silently under, eventually still die in despair driven by the said Villain.
Even after that much misery, The readers of MDZS actually has the guts to scorn Song Lan and defend Xue Yang...
Isn't he truly a miserable person??
What kind of great crime did Song Lan do to deserve all that?
Nothing.
This guy is just maintaining his conscience and holding on his morality well.
Imagine if this silent and mysophobic guy is Lan Wangji.
Are you willing to see Lan er-gege be scorned while the readers defend the villain and even pair that villain with Wei Wuxian instead?

I saw the idea of qi qingqi x yu ziyuan and I propose :
an au of where jiang cheng post!mdzs is stepping down as sect leader and is actually looking for a cultivation partner - cue him finding one in the qiong ding peak leader of the newly ascended generation. They're really happy - she doesn't fit 99% of his criteria and is a whole head taller than him but it's actually great! they're happy! -She even introduces him to the old generation - including her shifu, Yue Qingyuan. In the wedding preparations, he meets the ascended lords, including Qi QIngqi, who is shocked by JC's appearance. Cue JC finding out abt his mother's old lover and being conflicted as he re examines the complexes that affected his childhood.
also I like to think that WWX and JC slightly reconciled post MDZS, so his reaction at meeting QQQ would be interesting.
Okay but why would Jiang Cheng step down? Even ignoring why he would desire to step down, before he can step down, he has to designate a heir - a heir that isn't directly related to him like a son but pick a cousin, somehow, from the very very few blood-related Jiangs left alive, to say nothing else of their cultivation level. For him to put his foot down on this plan, it means that he and the elders don't expect Jiang Cheng to have any blood-related children - not just because traditionally things are passed down from father to son and blood takes precedent, but also there would be a succession issue if Jiang Cheng suddenly has a kid with stronger blood claims...
Then Jiang Cheng has to spend quite a number of years training said heir. He's doing this while also teaching and helping Jin Ling with the whole mess that is the Jin Sect.
(There's no reason why Jiang Cheng can't hunt for a cultivation partner while remaining sect leader. The elders would be ecstatic and any transition of power is a period of weakness for the sect, so the longer they can delay Jiang Cheng passing the power over, the better.
So the elders would far rather that an interim sect leader handles matters while Jiang Cheng is on a sabbatical to find a cultivation partner. If it happens to be a male partner, they don't care - Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian have made it trendy and anything is better than nothing when it comes to Jiang Cheng who seemed like he was going to be an eternal bachelor. Perhaps this new partner can help them convince the Jiang Sect Leader to at least have a concubine or two for blood heirs!)
Also I'm sure that Jiang Cheng would feel even more like he's betraying his ancestors by giving up his position for something as "frivolous" as looking for love.
Other than that, lol imagine the Jiang elders have a mini heart attack when Jiang Cheng brings back not just a female(!!!!) cultivation partner (that he can have kids with!!! No more inane planning to be done to trick the sect leader into having kids!!!) but also his mother's old lover?!?!?!
(Insert Liu Mingyan in the back writing a love story based on Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's lover story, being careful to mention how Lan Wangji's pillar was so large, it was almost large enough to rival that of the demon emperor's. But only almost.
Wei Wuxian takes incredible offense to that heh.)
[More in #Jiang Cheng finds out that qi qingqi X yu ziyuan was once a Thing while he finds himself a cultivation partner from Cang Qiong AU]

This is either going to get me cancelled or become the start of a revolution BUT.
I was having a mind boggling thought where Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan are a ship? And I was thinking about this and how Jin Ling would get raised by the two (they form a close bond over losing their sister and wife), and it would be chaotic but also bittersweet??
but then that idea got crushed once my mind cleared and it dawned on me that Jin Zixuan dies before Yanli (sadge). 😔
But regardless, if anyone can entertain this thought of mine, please,,, I am begging. Please entertain me.
