Day 46: Amaru Inca Yupanqui

In this ocassion, let's see the story of this man who was almost forgotten by history because he wasn't the main Inca, but thanks to some people talking about him, his legacy can continue one way or another.

Origin

[He was the firstborn of Pachacutec as he was born from the marriage with the coya Mama Anahuarque. His birth took place in Pomacocha, when his father's army was on the way to Vilcashuamán. Back in Cuzco, Pachacutec threw big parties to celebrate his birth. Apparently, the monarch already had two sons, Yanqui Yupanqui and Tilca Yupanqui, who would eventually become influential orejones (wise advisers) and the second would be a capable general. But both were sons with concubines.]

Characteristics

[Amaru Yupanqui had a calm and prudent character, a lover of agricultural work, which he favored with the construction of terraces and irrigation networks. Another favorite occupation was the construction of important buildings, both in Cuzco and in neighboring towns. He was particularly loved by the Inca's subjects and all the people were very happy when the sovereign chose him as his future heir.]

War trials

[The Inca decided to instruct him in the administration of the State and sent him to fight a rebellion of the Collas, where one of the sons of the curaca, defeated by his father years before, had proclaimed himself Inca. A host of 200,000 men was placed at his command. He was barely successful thanks to the help of his brothers, but this made his warlike incapacity clear.]

[The Cuzco population began to murmur and Pachacútec decided to offer him another opportunity, this time in the Amazon jungle. Changing the theater of operations, however, did not help because even in the meanders of the jungle the young prince showed that he did not have the necessary qualities to lead an army and had to return home after a humiliating defeat.]

Tupac Yupanqui

[Túpac Yupanqui was born in Cuzco around the year 1440, he was the legitimate son of Pachacútec and his sister wife Mama Anahuarque. He stood out as an exceptional warrior and a relevant emperor; the chroniclers Fernández de Palencia, Sarmiento de Gamboa and Cieza de León describe him as "great lord and very brave", "of lofty thoughts" and "the great king Túpac Inca Yupanqui", respectively.]

[However, he was not the predestined heir being the youngest of the sovereign's sons. Indeed, Pachacutec, following a practice established by his father Huiracocha Inca, had associated his son Amaru Inca Yupanqui to the throne in the last years of his reign, but he was very peaceful and kind - they called him "the Good". It is said that when he was sent (practically forced) to fight against the Guarani, he was defeated. Such attitudes made Pachacutec change his mind, so he appointed Túpac Yupanqui as his successor.]

Abdication

[After a co-government of five or six years (others speak of ten), Pachacútec understood very well the state of mind of his subjects and decided to change his election. Due to his poor military performance, he was displaced by his younger brother, Túpac Yupanqui, voluntarily giving up his position. Amaru Yupanqui was certainly an affable young man loved by all, but the empire needed a warrior and he did not meet the requirements.]

Support for Tupac Yupanqui

[Far from being envious and much less jealous of his brother destined for the throne, he always showed him the utmost fidelity and became his main adviser. When the innumerable campaigns undertaken by Tupac Yupanqui took him away from Cuzco, it was Amaru who determined the destinies of the empire by regulating its administrative life. On one occasion he stopped another uprising by the Collao, while the Inca troops were away and gave way to the Inca (his brother) to return in time to put down the rebellion.]

[During another absence of Túpac Yupanqui, the Andean highlands were affected by a terrible drought that brought the populations to the brink of extinction due to starvation. On this occasion, Amaru's skill in the domain of agriculture proved providential. He also donated the fruits of his farms to feed those in need. He is described as a philosopher, humble and good; “too human to be a ruler”]

Legacy

[The figure of Amaru Yupanqui was considered positively by all the chroniclers of the time for the modesty, rectitude and unconditional fidelity that animated his entire life. Everyone agrees that Tupac Yupanqui's conquests would not have been possible without the help of his devoted brother.]

I made this post of facts about him because I used to have a Tadeo Jones phone game that when you lost, it gave you little bits of information about the Incas and the Tahuantinsuyo, so that's why I wanted to share the existence of this Inca to you, because I find his role in the empire very interesting.

Looks like not everyone is fit to rule an ambicious and growing empire, not even those beloved by the population.

If it's revealed that Mummy is royalty because he belongs to the Pachacutec family (that would be his descendants), then he most likely took after Amaru, as far as we can know.

LOS CHASQUIS INCAS

Hoy en día y gracias a la tecnología, un mensaje llega en cuestión de segundos a su receptor. Lo mismo sucede con el envío de encomiendas, que son cada vez más rápidos y precisos. La ciencia ya avanzó tanto que ahora los procesos se manejan de manera uniforme gracias a páginas web o aplicaciones. Sin embargo, no siempre existió esa comodidad para poder comunicarte con quien quieras –y a la hora que quieras- o enviar un objeto preciado hacia un destino lejano con tan solo presionar algunos botones.

En el antiguo Perú, existió un noble oficio que era vital para los intereses del Imperio Inca. Los chasquis (que en el idioma quechua tendría los significados de ‘el que da y recibe’, ‘persona de relevo’ o ‘correo’) eran jóvenes atletas -con un estado físico impecable que trabajaban desde que eran niños- al servicio del Inca, encargados de llevar mensajes personales y recados a través del sistema de caminos del Qhapaq Ñan.

Su labor era de vital importancia ya que la información que trasladaban podían acabar conflictos bélicos o servir de alerta para agrupar tropas, por ejemplo. Y por llevar tanta responsabilidad, estaban exentos de realizar cualquier otra actividad física. Aquí, conocerás un poco más sobre la función que los chasquis desarrollaban.

1. Un servicio a la vanguardia

La tarea y rutas de los chasquis estaba tan bien planificadas gracias a las recomendaciones de los sabios y altos rangos administrativos incas. Ellos estaban encargados de reclutar y seleccionar a los corredores (en su mayoría, hijos de curacas, que eran personas de confianza en el Imperio Inca), elegir los puestos de relevo y diseñar los caminos más accesibles para cada situación, entre otros.

Así, los chasquis utilizarían el máximo de su esfuerzo para llegar al punto destino (cada tramo tenía entre 10 a 15 kilómetros, aproximadamente) lo más pronto posible, donde lo esperaría un sustituto para tomar la posta. Gracias a esta acción, agilizaban el proceso de envío de información u objetos en menos tiempo, del mismo modo que se administraba equitativamente el gasto de energía entre los encargados de remitir los recados.

2. Con el equipo completo

El chasqui llevaba siempre consigo una serie de objetos indispensables. Entre ellos, existía un par que no podían faltar bajo ninguna circunstancia: el quipu, un artefacto inca hecho de cuerdas anudadas en el que se transportaba la información; y el pututu, que era el caparazón de una caracola que fungía como una especie de instrumento de viento. Su sonido era perfecto para mantener alerta al siguiente corredor, ya que mientras más fuerte se oía el canto del pututu, significaba que pronto habría un encuentro entre chasquis.

Junto con los principales activos que portaba el chasqui, también cargaba una huaraca (conocida como honda en otros países) y una porra para defenderse de todo aquel que quisiera impedir su andar. Para ser reconocido visualmente, llevaba en la cabeza un penacho de plumas blancas o amarillas, que servía también como distracción para que no prestaran atención al atado que llevaba en la espalda y que contenía los encargos a transportar.

3. Una fuerza que asombra

Indudablemente, los chasquis contaban con características físicas envidiables. Para ser seleccionado como corredor del Tahuantinsuyo, debías tener una fuerza y potencia superior en las piernas. La velocidad y la capacidad de resistencia a fatigas musculares eran innegociables. Incluso con la llegada de los españoles, este sistema se mantuvo vigente ya que los europeos estaban asombrados con la eficacia de este servicio.

Los chasquis eran capaces de volar sin tener alas. Podían recorrer los Cuatro Suyos en cuestión de días sin la necesidad de medios de transporte, porque sus pies eran sus mejores ruedas. Contaban con una misión y no descansaban hasta que esté completa, porque un error les costaba la vida, que le entregaron al Imperio Inca en cuerpo y alma.

Sabías que, Luis Ángel Cereceda Parra nació el 27 de junio de 1943, conocido simplemente como Ángel Parra, fue un cantautor y escritor chileno. Con una extensa discografía, fue pieza fundamental y fundacional del movimiento musical conocido como Nueva Canción Chilena. En 1965 lanza su primer disco solista, titulado Ángel Parra y su guitarra, a través del sello Demon, comenzando así una constante y prolífera producción musical. Ese mismo año lanza además su segundo álbum titulado Oratorio para el pueblo, esta vez conformado en su gran mayoría por temas propios. Poco después, ayuda a la formación del naciente grupo Quilapayún, cosa que repite poco después con el conjunto Los Curacas. Rápidamente se vuelve un puntal del movimiento de la Nueva Canción Chilena. La música de Ángel Parra oscilaría entre la canción protesta, el folclore chileno y latinoamericano, cantando en ocasiones con su hermana Isabel Parra. También será uno de los primeros cantautores, junto con Víctor Jara, en abrirse a otros estilos musicales como el rock, colaborando con agrupaciones de rock chileno como Los Blops o Los Jaivas. Falleció a los 73 años de edad tras padecer un cáncer de pulmón.
