Tips and Resources for curating your fandom experience across platforms
Hi loves,
I wanted to write up a curating resource post for fandom spaces, so here are some things I’ve learned along the way, and though only you can decide what your digital boundaries look like, I do hope that for anyone looking for them, this list might find its way to you.
For tumblr
How to make your DM’s only open to people you follow
How to make it so only people you follow, or people who follow you for a week can reply
How to have your ask box open, but closed to anon’s - no longer needed, there's a simple toggle button near the ask settings for whether to allow anons or not :)
Use the filtering function for your dash (this is also an option for a blocked user - who you might still see if a mutual reblogs them.  You can add their name to your filtered list, and then their post will be hidden on your dash).  This tip brought to you by @quiquimora tumblr resource post (great post if you’re new to tumblr)
For AO3
How to filter out keywords that might appear in summary or author notes, but not in tags (handy for when an author is trying to understandably avoid spoilers in the tags)
A script option for filtering (especially nice if there are certain tags you'll always avoid across fandoms).
Muting authors (a nice option if you don’t necessarily mind engaging with authors in comments, etc, but don’t want to see their content) - this secondary link includes a how to video you can now use the muting feature on AO3, no scripts needed :)
You can block authors now on AO3 as well, and here’s a tweet thread that shows you how, but also what it does, and doesn’t do
If you’d like to avoid certain ship pairings
How to use a few extra search symbols to filter out certain content
Quick tip: don't forget to save your curated search results in either a bookmark, or as a link on your mobile home screen - that way you can just do all the filtering once, vs typing it all over again every time you're loading up AO3
For twitter
Muting words/content
How to set up various privacy settings
For discord
Privacy & Server settings master list
Accessibility settings
Please feel free to reblog with your own tips!
Under the cut, a few extra tips for dipping into new fandom spaces:
Interact with reblogs and hashtags (this isn’t the end all to be all, but one way to showcase your sense of humor with commentary, or digitally applaud a content creator). People can get to know you a bit ;)
If you enjoy content creating, sign up for fandom events: big bangs, reverse big bangs, zines - a fantastic way to connect with several people at once sharing the same hyperfixation as you <3
Look up certain hashtags in someone’s blogs - not in the sense of digging up ten years of posts, but a quick search if you have squicks and triggers that someone might blog about a lot.  It’s not a judgment on them, for many might not follow you for the things you post about either.  It’s just self care to be aware of things you do not want to see on your dash and keep your following list to things that bring you joy - nothing says you can’t do the occasional reblog, or even connect with them on other platforms!
On the flipside - block liberally.  If you look up their blog and you both are on opposite ends of a spectrum on a topic?  Want to ensure they can never say such things to you in DM’s, etc?  Block.
And guess what?  People have the right to do the same to you.  Do not under any circumstances block evade.  This includes going to other platforms to engage with them if you know you’ve been blocked.  Just.don’t.do.it.please.
And if you've made it to the end, you get a digital cookie or hug of your choice 🍪🫂

My level of internet pettiness and threshold for nonsense has gotten much funnier over the years. I once carefully messaged someone who I thought might have a belief difference that would cause them to dislike me and tried to discuss it without making them uncomfortable and then they cussed me out and I was like "ok sorry." Today I just blocked someone for publicly being attracted to Frank Grillo.

Hey if you ever look at Tiktok fandom culture, and ask yourself why the drama and the fights, mostly resulting from people not cursting their content comes from, I am here to inform you that Tiktok is one of fhe only platforms that does NOT have a feature to block users. And telling the app that you are not interested in sometjing does nothing. I have been forced to encounter an account entierly dedicated to saying homosexual parenting is grooming and I can not for the fucking life of me get that thing out of my feed.
Tiktok literally prevents users from curating their content unless you file a detailed report to allow you go keep certain content out of your feed.
Its literally built to make people see unplesant content and fight about it.
Its also why the character limit on comments is so low because it forces people to make entire videos responding to simple comments, fulling the drama spiral even more.
After learning this I have only used it to look at videos a recently made long distance friend sends me, but this platform has too many issues to be responsably used for anything.

regarding used bookstores, here is what i hope
So, as you all might expect due to how much I can't stop obsessing over Rebecca, I love to read. As a result, I have a lot of books. Not as many as some people, but more than people who don't read. Probably around 150, in a big tall bookcase with glass doors.
Lately, I have wanted to own fewer books. I think I got to the point, especially during the pandemic, where the bookshelves became pretty decor, instead of carefully curated reading material.
I kept a lot of children's books I loved. Lots of classics, Fantasy. Signed books. Young adult. You get the idea.
Anyway, last weekend, I went through the books, and bagged up around 60 to pass on to a used bookstore. It's funny, because deciding what to pass on wasn't even that difficult. I asked myself: Am I going to read this again? Have I read this? Did I really, truly love this? Will I be sad if this is not here anymore?
I kept this a pretty quick pass. A lot of the children's fiction that I loved but was ready to move on from went. Some grammar books. Some nonfiction. Some adult fiction. I had read all but one of them. (The exception was Philippa Gregory's Virgin Earth, for the record, because blarg on her historical fiction. Why I picked that up, I don't know.)
I am very pleased I did this. I still have books, just less of them.
I even passed on my Daphne du Maurier omnibus (Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek). It has a scene from 1979 Rebecca on the cover (imo the best version hands down) but I just didn't feel like I needed to keep it anymore. And that feels great. If I don't want something anymore, that means someone else can find enjoyment in it.
I could tell the used bookstore owner didn't really want my books, though he did take them in the end. This bookstore is the kind of old-timey store that writers especially love. It's the kind of store where, if you have the patience and the time, you will wander for a while and then you will randomly find a book that turns out to be excellent and you will wonder at how you found it at all.
There were tons of books in this store, Boxes of books on the floor. Tables full. Piles on the floor. Just books everywhere. When we left, the books I gave them were still in bags on the floor. I can understand why the owner was reluctant.
It can be really hard to know where to take used books. Most are not worth much (if anything). Some libraries don't want books at all. Little free libraries are often full. I don't know a lot of other readers in real life. So, I went with the used bookstore.
When I was a kid, people would give me bookstore gift cards and I would never know what to pick out. My dad resorted once to picking books out for me, telling me they all looked great.
So, here is what I hope:
I hope this store has regulars to pore through the new books people like me bring in. I hope they find something interesting and new and exciting.
I hope a father brings in his 11-year-old daughter because she loves to read, but never knows what to get, and I hope he picks up some of the great children's fiction I hung onto for too long for her, and says, "This looks great! How about this?"
I hope other readers find my books. And yours. And everyone else's. And I hope they enjoy the stories we all have to share.

It feels so good to be free. Free from expectations, opinions, standards, people, places, and self sabotaging thoughts. It feels good to think clearly, speak clearly, be intuitively clear. It feels so good that this year has brought about so many blessings and abundance. I’ve done what it is I’ve wanted and things are flourishing in ways I never could foresee. It feels so good to be me, so good to be free.

hello, i am looking for advice. i stumbled across my abuser's blog, she remade. tumblr was the one social media i was safe from her. i feel like i'm going to vomit or have a panic attack. i don't know what to do. she was a fairly popular artist so if she starts posting art again, it won't matter if i block her, there's still chance i will come across her. i know i'm spiraling but i feel like i am never going to be able to escape her. i don't know if i should delete all my social media.
Hi Anon,
I am so sorry for the feelings this has stirred up - and you absolutely do deserve safe spaces, including online. Yes, deleting all social media is one option, but if you would like to stay, there are some curating and filtering options you have for this platform as well as others.
One option I use for myself is yes, blocking a tumblr - but then I take it a step further. Instead of potentially unfollowing mutual friends (and then it somehow still appear within the tags), I add the blocked user's handle to my filtered list of hashtags (the link is from tumblr's help page and shows visuals of how your dash will look if implemented). So yes, you'll still be aware of this person's art potentially appearing on your dash if a mutual reblogs them but you won't see it, or their words or their art or someone interacting with them (unless you choose to click "view post").
Though of course whatever you decide for yourself is your choice (and a valid one), because you have the power in online spaces to decide who has access to you. Boundaries are self care and the above is just one option of several. Either way, I hope you find something for yourself today that helps ease the pain and brings a sense of calm.

How to explain to someone why you unfollowed/blocked/curated your dash . . .
Don't. Because it's your blog.
Your little corner in the world. While it's important to have and develop the life skills of being able to maintain civility in shared public spaces with say, school and work colleagues, this is fandom.
It's the one area where you can make it as niche as you want to, custom tailored to things that bring you joy. Life and people are hard enough some days, soak up the moments of joy where you can.
You deserve more than to feel miserable as you doom scroll your dash because you're afraid of the repercussions of some stranger on the internet berating you in DMs. Would you do that to someone if the tables were turned? No, so rest in the knowledge that for 99% of others, it's not that deep (for the 1% who would have the gall, report any harassing messages and block).
So, to summarize: do what works for you and your mental health. Whatever allows you to enjoy your fandom experience the most. And connect with people who are into the same niche things you are.
May fandom bring you joy again ❤️

Who am I?
During my time as a bachelor student in Liberal Arts and Sciences at University College Utrecht in the Netherlands, I was largely exposed to concepts I understood but had no names for. Growing up on a post-colonial island in a British educational institute, we were often fed the phrase "you were part of an empire" rather than the correct phrasing "you were colonized". This perspective shift was an important one that introduced me to the value of restructuring language to better represent reality. It introduced me to one of my major interests, editing language to ensure the intention runs through from the writer to the audience well and accurately. My investment in human rights issues grew from simply there to something I understood.
Also during this time, I took an elective introducing geology and environmental science, which shook me to the core. I fell in love with the textbook, the way it read and how the information that seemed so dull – rocks and tectonics and groundwater proved to be so entertaining and exciting. The earth below me came alive and so followed my interest. I finished my degree with courses in Earth & environment, literature and global health. My bachelor thesis was an attempt to communicate the interdisciplinary truth of Aruba's gold mine industry, to maybe better introduce the non-geologist to how even the rocks below them were used by the colonial presences to control and alter the people and the land.
Every concern is interdisciplinary, every existence is intersectional, and to simplify it to its parts, belittles the truth of the whole. We must work together from multiple angles if we wish to repair, restructure, regenerate for a more optimistic future.
This academic experience was precious, albeit complicated. An interdisciplinary degree greatly prepared me for life but less so for qualifying in strictly STEM master's, as such I am returning to a bachelor setting, now in the US, to deepen my scientific background so that I may proceed down the path I have discovered is right for me. I will be a science communicator. In some ways, you may think of this as curating content to a standard that may be consumed by a greater range of people. Science belongs to us all, so to all it must be shared with. My aim is to establish myself as a communicator, as a vessel to carry meaning and to play my role in society.
As simplistic as it may seem, we have two outcomes as we are now. We either survive or we don't. We must actively put effort into regeneration and restoration, because to consume would be to accept that what has been lost is not worth being found. I am someone who believes, who hopes, that we can work collectively and collaboratively to improve the state of the world for us all, from the smallest sapling to the largest mammal.
