Being raised in an unstable household makes you understand that the world doesn’t exist to accommodate you, which… is something a lot of people struggle to understand well into their adulthood. It makes you realize how quickly a situation can shift, how danger really is everywhere. But crises when they occur, do not catch you off guard; you have never believed you lived under a shelter of some essential benevolence. And an unstable childhood makes you appreciate calmness and not crave excitement.

Random HC: Soda's, Ponyboy's, and Johnny's southern drawls become more prominent when they're tired <3
Dally's New York accent gets thicker too <33

Something I find interesting in the Outsiders is the very guardian angel-esqe role Dally and Johnny play when it comes to Ponyboy. Both of them consistently protect Pony.
Dally is the one who gives guidance to both him and Johnny when they need to run away, gives Pony his jacket, puts out the fire on said jacket, helped Pony during the rumble (although it might’ve ended up Pony helping Dally) and took him to see Johnny. He’s even likened to Darry at one point in how he fusses over and helps Pony (and Johnny although this comparison is mainly for Pony)
Johnny takes charge after they run (suggesting they find Dally, letting Pony nap on him, giving instructions constantly, buying supplies), tries to talk Pony into leaving and even gives his own jacket like Dally did at one point, goes after him in the church and pushes Pony out first once they had saved the kids.
In fact, it’s Dally’s jacket and Johnny pushing Ponyboy out before himself that saves Pony from any major injury or possibles death in the church fire. And it’s Dally and Johnny who both give Ponyboy advice, which mirror the crux of his character arc and dilemma; should he become tough and hardened, ‘unable to be hurt anymore’ or should he ‘stay gold’ and be himself, loving the world for its good even though he’s seen its bad.
Whilst Johnny and Dally are alive, Pony doesn’t need to make this decision. They are manifestations and symbols of the two paths Pony needs to choose between but whilst they’re alive, they guide and protect Pony. Once they die (and finish their roles in Pony’s life), Pony is on his own and has to make that choice.
It once again fits the guardian angel troupe as they both can guide and advise Pony, but in the end, the choice is his.

Hi yes, on todays episode we will discuss how Sodapop was consistently emotionally neglected and that after mrs. And mr. Curtis passed Darry had focused all his attention on Pony leaving Soda to deal with the emotions brought forth by the death of his parents alone, which makes the fact that he's seen as a playboy even more depressing cause he's seeking the attention he lacks at home via romantic relationships

Not enough people realize Sodapop lost his parents not even a year before his girlfriend, his brother temporarily, Johnny, and Dally all in one week and ONTOP of that have to deal with Darry and Ponyboys bullshit.

If I had a nickel for every time Marvel had a main character who is a veteran with an amputee best friend who is also a veteran, I’d have two nickels.
