#custom reptile enclosure
Note
On a reptile rescue page, I saw that they didn't allow adoptions to folks who use screen-topped cages. They cited heat and humidity loss for the reasons, and I was curious about your thoughts on it. I haven't seen this topic brought up much, and there's just so much conflicting information out there on reptile care.
As an aside, what enclosure(s) do you use? I have Exoterra right now but I'm probably going to switch to PVC when I can (but man, that upfront cost is something!)
That's something I've never seen before! I usually advise against screen-top enclosures for those reasons if you're a beginner, but they're perfectly workable. They're fine for low-humidity snakes and if you know what you're doing you can keep any snake in one with no issues. In most cases literally all you really have to do is cover most of the screen with something like a plywood sheet or even just cardboard and be sure to monitor perimeters very closely.
Most of my enclosures are either custom-built PVC I've bought from local hobbyists at expos or old donated fish tanks that have been repurposed! I strongly prefer PVC but there's really nothing wrong with a repurposed fish tank if it's what you have and you know what you're doing. I have a couple Exoterras too and I don't mind them one bit for smaller snakes! What style of enclosure I pick for an individual snake depends on their species and their individual needs, but in general PVC is a super solid bet. Check out Animal Plastics and your local reptile expo for more affordable PVC enclosures!

trying to decide what i should make my next pet goal be. I’m thinking either a 4x2x2 enclosure for Stan or a custom built cage for Joey.
That being said if you guys know of any good guides online for building a 4x2x2 reptile enclosure pls send them my way!!

hey uh i was looking through the LG Alphys tag and noticed that her enclosure looks like repticarpet or cloth/turf of some kind? In case you didn't know, this isn't the greatest substrate to keep them on, since it can be a very easy breeding ground for bacteria and nasties of various kinds, and it can snag their claws. I think current hobby favorite right now is 50/50 playsand & untreated topsoil mix, though tile is also a good option. it'd also probably be easier for you to clean up poops. Sorry to bother you, & love ur art. Wishing u & the beardie well!
Yeah, it's basic reptile carpet. I haven't seen her snag her claws on it ever, and I do take the carpet out to wash it frequently. Both the breeder and the vet have said it's good substrate for her, since with a sandy substrate there's the possibility of her ingesting some while going after a cricket and getting impacted, sooo I am going to trust their judgment on that. My attempts to try tile were not very successful; I think I'd need to custom order a piece that fits the entire tank.
But thanks very much!

And ain’t there was also that scene in season 4 where the old lady woke up and said that TK, Nancy & Tommy are so pretty? (I mean well both ronen/tk seem very happy with the pretty compliments irl and in the show lol)
Haha anyway now I’m imagining Carlos passing by different random scenes of “pretty priviledge TK”
Monday - oh that’s TK being stopped by a bunch of ladies in the fish market…wait why are they giving him so many fishes?? TK THATS TOO MUCH FISH
Tuesday - *on patrol seeing a guy giving out autographs to kids in neighbourhood* lol didn’t know there’s a new idol in town WAIT THATS MY HUSBAND (this is inspired by that BTS of ronen giving out autographs to kids while still in his tk paramedic uniform)
Wednesday - *waiting in his car for TK to come back from quick errand at the pet shop* PLS DONT GIVE HIM EXTRA CRICKETS
(And maybe the pet shop staff would open an enclosure that isn’t usually accessible to regular customers and Carlos is just dying over there in the car at the scene of TK petting a snake or some rare reptiles)
The problem is when Carlos comes over to tell people not to give him extra crickets, their jaws would hit the floor when they saw him and had to deal in their minds with the concept that these two are together and hotter than the actual sun and they would just get everything free forever

I can make your wish come true, stuff you in a box and ship you over to the local pet store. You get to watch customers come by and look at all the cute pets. You probably got excited when a busty employee came over to your enclosure and took the lid off reach in and picked you up. But things changed when she unceremoniously dumped your buggy ass into a chamber with a snake inside. You weren't a pet, deary, you were the food. And you tiny form was helpless as the serpent grabbed you and pulled you inside. The most you got was a sideways glance from the employee who was otherwise just checking her phone.
SHDHSHFHDD PLEASE OH MY GOSH <333
Your smirk as you toss me into the box... shipped away without a second thought, exitedly pressing myself up against whatever container I'm in- all the customers fawning over pets, so exited to see which one might be my owner... scooped up by the employee, trying my best not to blush as she lets out a sigh and dumps me into my display~
... or rather, the snakes display... slithering, coiling, and eventually striking... coils wrapped around me- some harmless house snake my new owner, and what will most likely devour me... no more than any pf the other bugs fed to the reptiles~ dddhdhhdhdd GOSH <3333
One last tired, uncaring glance from the employee as I'm dragged away..... its the perfect fate for such a desperate little thing <3

Read Chapter 46: Mondo Not Cool here!
Mikey looked around the bedroom. Everything had a punk rock aesthetic, its walls lined with posters of bands, professional skateboarders, and some custom painted skateboards that were hung up. The room was messy, with magazines and clothes piled all over the floor.
Jason walked over to a reptile enclosure and pulled out a small madagascar gecko from the tank, hand feeding it a worm.
“Hey buddy, you miss me?” He asked the gecko, scratching under his chin. “Yeah, I look a little different don’t I?” He was relieved Lars still recognized him in this form.. “We’re twinning now, bud! So epic!”
“OMG you got a bean bag chair too!” Mikey said as he flopped onto the bag. “Yours is way comfier.”
Jason stripped the torn up uniform off of him and pulled out some of his clothes from the dresser, putting on a worn tee with the graphic of a lizard skeleton with the words ‘Livin it Up’ on it. He grabbed a pair of old skater pants covered in patches and started cutting a hole in the back with scissors.
“Woah, what are you doing?” Mikey asked, sitting up.
“Cutting a tail hole,” Jason said as he put them on and his gecko tail slumped out through the back. “Hmm… Should I put a pair of fingerless gloves on my hands AND feet?” He wiggled his long lizard toes.
“That’s true fashion,” Mikey said solemnly.

How would Saeran feel about an mc that loves animals and keeps a lot? I have four cats, a snake, and a turtle. Reptiles are a special interest, and I plan on getting more snakes as soon as I have the space. I'm also making plans for a custom enclosure/storage setup. I'm sure Saeran would support my hobby, but living with that many animals can be a lot
GE Saeran isn't the kind of person who would tell you not to go through with your hobby. If you are the kind of person that knows that you want to be able to take care of a lot of pets, tell him that. He won't mind that in the slightest.
The only thing you need to do with him is talk about where he can go to educate himself because he wants to be able to learn as much as he can to be able to help you take care of your animals. He doesn't want you to have to do that by yourself even if you're okay doing those things by yourself.
Because after all, it's not just going to be a situation where it's your pets. They're going to be his pets, as well.
Sure, it might be a lot of work to take care of that many animals all the time, but if it's something you are committed to and it makes you happy, he's not going to get in the way of that. He's going to do everything he can to make sure that you get to be happy and so do the animals.
Who knows, he might be able to find a way to enjoy himself. He would help you make anything you needed in your house to be able to do such a thing. Of course, you do have to respect his boundaries when it comes to the garden. If you have any little creatures that are going to munch on his flowers, tell him about that first so that he doesn't feel sad when the flowers die.
Or, God forbid something gets into the vegetable garden and he can't do anything about it.

Good Omens Oneshot: Snake Crowley
In a small tucked-away corner of the quiet bookshop held a reptile enclosure. A bright heat lamp shined on various rocks and plants inside the enclosure, and a burnt red and black snake rested on the biggest rock that was placed directly under the lamp. An eloquent sign was placed on top of the mesh roof of the enclosure. It read, 'Hello, I'm Anthony. Please don't tap on the glass or try to handle me, I like my space.' Too many people had gotten curious and some rude customers had tapped on the glass, shouted at the being, and tried to handle the uniquely colored snake. Each time Aziraphale had to step in and escort them out, the snake hissed and carried on until he was picked up specifically into the angel's hands.
Today was no different than a normal day as Crowley had been happily dozing in the warmth of the enclosure. Customers passed by with the occasional gasp of surprise or disgust when someone passed by the area. He couldn't care less and didn't bother to move but a small voice caught his attention as two new customers entered.
"Mom! There's a snake over there!" He heard a kid whisper excitedly as he felt two pair of eyes fall over him. "Can we say hi? Please!"
The mom sighed but he couldn't hear any actual discontent in her voice, "Oh alright, we can say hello." A pair of footsteps walked over to him, he was half tempted to open an eye and gauge their reactions but held off for the moment. "Ooh there's a sign on top, can you try and read it?" The woman encouraged and the kid started to sound out what the card said, occasionally needing help with a vowel.
Aziraphale had added that card not too long ago which helped lessen the amount of people that thought it was a good idea to bother him. Crowley would never admit this but he was all bark and no bite when it came to people messing with him. He could inflict some serious damage, emphasize on the could, but he didn't want to give the bookshop a bad name. Aziraphale had made this nice enclosure just for him and he'd hate to get it taken away because he bit someone.
It took a minute but the kid had finished reading the sign when Crowley yawned, showing off his sharp fangs and alien-like mouth, and opened his eyes. He didn't mind children's curiosity but it was funny to spook them, usually his yawn scared them and he would snicker at their shrill screams. But he was surprised to find the kid staring at him with a big smile, "Pretty teeth," They whispered as he continued to stare.
"Do you know what kind of snake this is sweetheart?" The mom asked almost uncertain,  Crowley silently snickered as he turned to her and she winced at the eye contact.
"I'm not sure, I've never seen any like this one in any of my books." The kid mused happily with a smile, inching his face closer to the glass despite his mom's nervousness.
'Oh so this kid likes snakes, what a pleasant surprise' Crowley thought as he slithered close to the glass too and the child gasped excitedly.
"Hello," He whispered before trying to stifle his giggles. Cowley tilted his head slowly from side to side which made the kid giggle more, he liked this kid. "I'd like to hold you but your sign says not to," The kid said sadly and drooped a little.
"Maybe we can ask the owner if you could see him outside of the tank," The mom offered hopefully trying to cheer up the little one.
Crowley internally smiled, he was definitely going to be on his best behavior for this kid. It was rare he let anyone else handle him other than Aziraphale, but gentle and curious children were the only exception. The pair walked away hand in hand looking for the owner, Crowley couldn't help but wiggle happily as he watched them go. He could pick up on Aziraphale's voice as the family found the angel and talked to him, Crowley pressed his snoot against the glass as he waited.
"He can be a bit of a grumpy gus sometimes, his previous owners were dreadful and he's still learning there are kind people," Aziraphale rambled as he lead the way back to Crowley's enclosure, "Oh look he's excited," He cooed as he noticed the snake's good mood. The angel moved the sign to the side so he could take the mesh wire lid off, dipping a hand into the enclosure. Crowley quickly slithered on and wrapped around Aziraphale's arm, his tail twitching back and forth excitedly as he was handled and the kid's eyes brightened. He tried to stretch his neck out to reach the child but nearly fell and had to be rescued by the angel
"Woah there," Aziraphale lightly chastised the snake as he resituated the being back on his arm. "He seems to like you a lot, you must be very special. Did you want to hold him?" He added with a smile and crouched down to the kid's level, Crowley pretended to not notice the mom take a slight step back.
The child gasped and looked at Aziraphale with big excited eyes, "Yes please!"
The angel gently helped Crowley loop himself around the child's arm and how best to support the snake. The demon nuzzled his head against the small palm, letting his tongue dart out to tickle his palm too. After a couple of giggles, he settled down and glanced around at the group, the mom looked wary but seemed happy that her little one was happy. Plus the fond looks Aziraphale was giving him made him preen at the attention.
"What kind of snake is he Mr?" The child asked as they started to rub the snake's head, Crowley happily closed his eyes and leaned into the touch.
"You know, I'm not really sure. He showed up one day while I was in a bit of a pinch, and we've been friends ever since." Aziraphale smiled fondly as he thought back on when he first met the demon.
~~~~
"That was very kind of you earlier dear," Aziraphale said with a smile as he passed a warm cup over to Crowley, who was now in normal human form.
"Well, they didn't scream in terror when I yawned, so yeah." Crowley shrugged and waved off the angel's bright smile, a bit embarrassed with the praise.
So last Sunday (September 24th 2023) I picked up my new ball Python, Daemon 💛 He’s my first ever snake and reptile, so I’m continuously researching on ways I can make his life with me as great as possible!
Here’s a video of his enclosure from when I set it up; since we don’t have enclosure providers where I’m based (Uruguay), I got it custom made by a family friend who’s a carpenter. It’s a 150cmx40cmx40cm wooden enclosure covered by PVC on the inside so as to retain more humidity and heat, with a mesh top and tempered glass doors. I’m using a CHE w a dimming switch as an overhead heat source, with a heat Mat hooked up to a thermostat to provide belly heat inside the warm hide. We’re on day 6 of his acclimation process, and so far I believe he’s settling in super nicely!
Thought I’d make a side blog to document and share our time together 🐍💛
The Reptile Enclosure Market Will Grow At Highest Pace Owing To Increasing Adoption Of Reptiles As Pets
Tumblr media
 Reptile enclosures are cages or terrariums designed for housing captive reptiles like snakes, lizards, tortoises, and terrapins in captivity. They provide a controlled environment and suitable living conditions for reptiles. Reptile enclosures have various components like doors, vents, lights, thermometers, substrate like wood chips or gravel, water bowl, hides for basking and shelter. Enclosure types vary based on the size and type of reptile. Basic necessities like temperature and humidity regulation offered by enclosures help pet owners care for reptiles effectively. Growing demand for reptiles as exotic pets coupled with improvements in enclosure design is driving the reptile enclosure market.
The Global Reptile Enclosure Market Size Is Estimated To Be Valued At US$ 1.29 Bn In 2024 And Is Expected To Exhibit A CAGR Of 7.6% Over The Forecast Period 2024-2031. Key Takeaways: Key players operating in the reptile enclosure market are Exo Terra, Zilla, Zoo Med, REPTI ZOO, Terrarium, Hagen, Tetrafauna, Herp Room, Herptek, Zoo Med Laboratories, T-Rex, Carolina Custom Cages, Apogee Reptiles, East Coast Reptile Breeders, The Reptile Factory, Cornel's World, Vision Vivaria, Herp Haven, Black Box, And Reptmart. Stringent regulations around captive reptile care have prompted enclosure designers to develop advanced products that mimic natural habitats and regulate critical temperature, humidity and lighting parameters for various species. Technological advancements like integrated digital temperature and humidity controllers, auto-misting systems and programmable lighting are enhancing enclosure functionality.
So. On to more talk about Starfire and Sammy, and their differences in personality.
Tumblr media
Having two reptiles with vastly different personalities has helped me get a feel for what reptile taming requires. Mostly patience.
Tumblr media
Even if a reptile is well socialized you must be patient when you first bring them home. A week and a half after bringing her home was the first time she chose to climb onto me.
Tumblr media
See, I avoided interacting with Starfire until she wanted to. I would bring food and hold my hand near her, make sure she sees me, and occasionally if she clearly saw me and was not turning away, I might give a light stroke. If she seemed unhappy with contact like moving away, I stopped. The above picture is from her jumping on me when I was fixing a plant she disturbed. Below is her jumping to my wrist and climbing up me after I set food down.
Tumblr media
Sammy my uromastyx is not a friendly reptile. But he is a lot better than when I started. When I first got him he constantly hid and avoided me. In time he learned to associate me with the delivery of food, so would watch me bring food to him.
Tumblr media
He does not like to be picked up. One of my big mistakes in winning him over was getting a huge top opening aquarium instead of a custom front open enclosure. Things coming from above is scary to many reptiles, especially small ones.
Tumblr media
Another thing I needed to consider was their individual needs. Uromastyx need extremely hot basking areas. When I handled him it was cool and he did not like that. The best handling session I ever had with him was when I wanted him to get some natural uv rays and put a leash on him to take him on the deck on the hottest day of the year. Eventually I got him to bask laying on my hand but he was still extremely jumpy and skittish. He may end up needing a home where he has an enclosure in the main room so he can get used to people better. But that’s a thought for when he’s not brumating through winter.
Quick addition: Handling Sammy is rare and almost exclusively for health reasons like checking his weight, checking a shed that may be stuck on toes, or this and one other session in natural light. He doesn't like it, so I avoid it unless necessary for his well being.
How To Take Care Of A Terrapin: Expert Care Tips, Costs, and Advice
Terrapins, with their unique charm and captivating aquatic habitats, make for fascinating pets. But providing the right care for a terrapin is essential for their health and happiness. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the ins and outs of terrapin care, offering expert advice on their needs, costs, and how to ensure a thriving, long-lasting relationship with your aquatic friend.
Section 1: Understanding Terrapins
Before diving into the care details, let's first understand what terrapins are and what makes them such intriguing pets.
Terrapins are aquatic turtles that reside in freshwater environments, combining the features of land and water turtles. These semi-aquatic creatures are known for their distinct characteristics, including webbed feet, attractive shells, and a unique basking behavior.
Section 2: Creating the Ideal Habitat
2.1 Choosing the Right Enclosure
Terrapins need a spacious enclosure that provides both aquatic and dry areas. A glass or acrylic aquarium or a pond with a basking platform is ideal. The enclosure's size depends on the terrapin's species, so research the specific requirements for your pet.
2.2 Water Quality
Maintaining clean, dechlorinated water is crucial. Invest in a good filtration system to keep the water quality optimal. Regular water changes are also necessary to prevent the accumulation of waste and toxins.
2.3 Basking Spot
Terrapins require a dry, heated basking spot where they can get out of the water to regulate their body temperature. A heat lamp or basking bulb should provide the necessary warmth.
Section 3: Terrapin Diet
Terrapins have specific dietary needs. Their diet typically includes a combination of:
a. Commercial Pellets: High-quality turtle pellets are readily available and should be a staple in their diet.
b. Fresh Food: Offer a variety of fresh food such as aquatic plants, insects, and small fish. Ensure that the food is appropriate for your terrapin's species.
c. Calcium Supplements: Dust their food with a calcium supplement to support shell health.
Section 4: Health and Hygiene
Regular health checks are essential for your terrapin's well-being. Some vital aspects to consider include:
a. Regular Veterinary Visits: Schedule annual check-ups with a vet who specializes in reptiles.
b. Hygiene: Maintain clean water, clean and disinfect the enclosure, and monitor your terrapin for any signs of illness.
c. Handling: Limit handling, as terrapins can become stressed when out of their habitat. Always wash your hands before and after handling them.
Section 5: Costs of Terrapin Ownership
Owning a terrapin involves various costs, including the initial setup and ongoing expenses. Be prepared for expenses related to:
a. Enclosure: The cost of the enclosure, whether it's an aquarium, pond, or a custom habitat.
b. Equipment: Filters, heating lamps, basking platforms, and thermometers.
c. Food and Supplements: The ongoing cost of high-quality food and necessary supplements.
d. Veterinary Care: Budget for annual check-ups and potential medical expenses.
Section 6: Legal Considerations
Always check local regulations regarding terrapin ownership. Some species may be protected, and permits might be required in certain regions.
Conclusion
Caring for a terrapin can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with responsibilities. With the right knowledge and dedication, you can provide your terrapin with a happy, healthy life. Ensure you research your terrapin's specific needs and consult with a reptile veterinarian for personalized advice. By following expert care tips and being attentive to your terrapin's well-being, you can enjoy a lasting and fulfilling relationship with your semi-aquatic companion.
