Translating the original RE8 trial scene storyboard
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RE8’s bonus DLC concept art pack includes a couple of pages of an early storyboard for the trial scene, dating to back when Miranda was still going to be a foreign researcher rather than a village native, and Ada Wong was still part of the cast. Though the text is all in Japanese, I had a crack at translating it ‒ it makes for a fascinating comparison to the finished game.
Images and translations are under the cut below – but here’s the dot-point version of how this older storyboard compares to the finished one.
Instead of Miranda, the trial is overseen by a masked figure called only ‘shaman’ (祈祷師). Instead of lycans, the trial is attended by numerous villagers, all eager to see Ethan punished.
This may be the big one: the shaman claims an ‘Adam-sama’ has been angered by Ethan’s (unspecified) crimes. My best guess at this mysterious ‘Adam’ is that it might be a name for the megamycete. Whoever he is, all the 'Eve' connotations of Eva/Eveline (and even the Rose flasks) suddenly start to sound a whole lot more significant.
Even here, the trial is dominated by Dimitrescu and Heisenberg fighting over who gets Ethan – or at least who gets his body, after his execution. Dimitrescu still wants his blood, while Heisenberg presumably wants him for soldat-material. Moreau briefly makes his own bid, but he just wants to eat Ethan.
Donna’s one act is to apparently stop time at a crucial moment to speak directly to Ethan without anyone else hearing – though this seems to be an illusion she creates while contacting him psychically. No sign of Angie, who probably isn’t part of the game yet.
Rather than escaping through Heisenberg’s gauntlet, Ethan is rescued by Ada Wong (disguised behind a plague mask). I’m guessing Heisenberg’s role as pseudo-ally hadn’t fully developed while Ada was still supposed to be involved.
Conflict between the lords seems to be framed more as conflict between separate houses/families. Heisenberg makes a reference to ‘us Heisenbergs’ (perhaps this is from the time when his mother, father and twin brother were also supposed to be characters?) and Moreau to his ‘Kuku-family’.
Though the name ‘Heisenberg’ does appear, he’s mostly called ‘Geek’, while Moreau is ‘Half-fish-man’ (半魚人), and Donna is simply 'Spirit' or 'Ghost' (心霊). Lady Dimitrescu is the only character who is actually called that (though it’s mostly abbreviated to just ‘lady’). I could not tell you why a Japanese dev team would decide that ‘geek’ was a good moniker for their heavy-metal-Frankenstein-wannabe, but here we are. (Note that most of the game files associated with Heisenberg are still labelled ‘geek[something]’, so clearly this was a moniker that stuck. Donna’s files are almost all called ‘ghost[something]’. Moreau and Dimitrescu mostly get shortened/mangled into 'moro' and 'domi'.)
Heisenberg and Dimitrescu actually come to blows over Ethan in this version, with Heisenberg launching his hammer at her and seemingly killing her, or at least blowing her away. But I think we can take it as read that even in this version, she'll show up okay and be back to torment Ethan later.
Oh, and did I mention this little addendum at the end which hints at Miranda doing some kind of surgery on Chris? WTF?
Standard disclaimer for all my Japanese translations: I’m nothing like fluent, and rely on online dictionaries for a lot of harder vocabulary. Corrections from anyone better qualified are welcome.
Okay, on to the actual translations! I'll include the full pages as we get to them, but I'll also break them down into smaller chunks so I can share and translate smaller chunks as we go through.

Page 1
Tumblr media
[Ethan wakes up to find he can't move because his handcuffs are chained to the floor]
Tumblr media
[Ghost-nobles and villagers buzzing in the church]
[Banging noise as shaman bangs his staff]
Shaman: "Everyone, quiet!"
[Church falls silent]
Tumblr media
Shaman: "I have heard from each of the lords. This man's crime threatens the very foundations of our family! Lord Adam is furious! To allow this man to live will bring disaster upon the village! Only his death will appease Lord Adam's anger!"
Tumblr media
[Cheering from the crowd]
Lady Dimitrescu: "In that case, after the execution, the Dimitrescu family shall receive the victim. My daughters haven't had nearly enough blood to drink of late."
Tumblr media
Geek (Heisenberg): "Oi, wait a minute. From what I've heard, you witches have had it your own way long enough."
["Geek" burns Ethan's hand with a cigar]
Geek: "Us Heisenbergs will be taking this one, got it?"
[Ethan shrieks in pain]
Tumblr media
Lady: "Didn't you have several victims sent to you just the other day?"
[Half-fish-man (半魚人) walks up to the Geek]
Half-fish-man (Moreau): "Oh, grant him to my Kuku-family, I.. I want to break him open and eat his insides!" (Note: I think Moreau's actually saying something even more colourful here, but I'm having trouble translating it)
[He approaches Ethan, parasites emerging from under his hood]
["Geek" halts him, brandishing his hammer]
Half-fish-man: [Groaning noise]
Tumblr media
Lady: "I will not allow you two to do as you please!"
Geek: "Hm, how to settle this?"
Half-fish-man: "Oh, oh…!"
[Rising noise of cursing onlookers]
[Geek raises his iron hammer]
Tumblr media
Page 2
Tumblr media
[The moment he throws his hammer at Lady Dimitrescu, a halucination begins and time seems to stop. Direction and focus of camera fits the spirit]
Ghost (Donna, in a voice no-one else can hear): "….(You… have summoned him… receive your reward…)"
Tumblr media
[Reality returns]
[The hammer pierces Lady D. and blows her away, part of the church collapses. Panic as villagers fall or die]
Geek: "Don't worry. Your corpse will become my plaything."
Tumblr media
[A mysterious masked figure appears and fires three shots into Heisenberg, five into the shaman]
Tumblr media
Masked figure: "Run!"
Tumblr media
[Cuts the chain holding Ethan to the floor]
Geek: [getting up] "..what the…?"
Shaman (still full of arrows) yells to the villagers: "What are you doing! Don't let them escape! After him!"
Tumblr media
Masked figure: "This way!"
[Still handcuffed, Ethan runs through passages before finally making it outdoors]
Tumblr media
Page 3
Tumblr media
Masked figure: [while reloading crossbow] "Your daughter is alive. Go get her back, okay?"
Ethan: "What are you…"
[Masked figure sees someone coming from behind] "No time, go!"
Tumblr media
[Ethan screams as he's thrown over the railing]
Tumblr media
[And here endeth the storyboard]
Page 3 Addendum
This brings us to the latter half of Page 3, which contains only a single column of panels. Remaining space features an extra half-page of Miranda in her original foreign-scientist incarnation, pictured with what I assume were some of her experiments. There's some text on these too ‒ hand-written rather than typed, which made it a right bastard to figure out. But I had a crack anyway, because even at a skim-read it had me going, "wait, does that say the monster is Chris?"
Tumblr media
Yep, it does. The captions (as best I could make them out) read "Miranda's paranormal organism experiment" (奇生体の実験) and "After plastic surgery on Chris' face" (クリスの顔に整形後).
This only raises so many more questions. Is Chris actually working with Miranda, or has she captured him for experiments? Is she repairing Chris' face after some horrific accident? Is she altering some monster to make it look like Chris Redfield? Or ‒ in a far more entertaining possibility ‒ was this meant to be an in-game justification for why RE7's Chris looks nothing like he does in RE8?
I have no answers for you, but you can really feel how much this game changed in development just from these little glimpses of what might have been.

TS!UNDERSWAP Dev Diary: Koffin-K Party Member
The area progression for Starlight Isles was much different during the initial concept stages than what was finalized. Originally, you would defeat Crossbones in the village -- and if spared, the two of you would team up against Koffin-K, infiltrating his base of operations.
With this idea, Crossbones would have been a party member -- except he would have been completely useless, and serving purely as comic relief. In battles with Koffin-K's minions, he would have done nothing besides crack jokes.
This would have gone on briefly until the two of you got separated. You would have discovered that Koffin-K (who used to have hypnosis magic) would have "hypnotized" Crossbones, with him becoming the supervillain minion "Mr. S" (inspired by Mr. L from Super Paper Mario.)
Tumblr media
(These are the only sprites I could find.)
Some of the finer details are missing -- either you would have "snapped him out of it," or he wasn't actually hypnotized the whole time, just messing with you both.
Eventually, you and the non-hypnotized Crossbones would corner Koffin-K together -- and in a last-ditch effort, Koffin-K would try hypnotizing Crossbones a second time. This time, it'd be complete with a whole transformation into a Darkwing Duck-esque design, with Crossbones wearing Koffin-K. Sadly, I wasn't able to find these sprites.
The Koffin-K battle would have been with a "hypnotized Crossbones" wearing Koffin-K. At the end, Crossbones would reveal that he was never actually hypnotized, and just messing with you both. Koffin-K would have figured that this meant he could only control bats.
Suffice to say, this was a LOT in terms of scope -- an entire major area devoted to Koffin-K with multiple sections, minion battles, and an entire "hypnotized Crossbones" antagonist plot. This just wasn't going to be feasible in the long term, and would be going way too overboard in terms of original content versus the rest of the game.
We ended up making the following simplifications:
"Koffin-K Island" was reworked to "Koffin Keep," and made a smaller, self-contained, nonlinear area -- as opposed to a larger linear area.
Koffin Keep was placed between Stardust Woods and Starstruck Village to better integrate it within the overall area progression, and make it less of an afterthought or something "tacked on."
Koffin-K having hypnosis magic was scrapped, as was "antagonist Crossbones," because it made no sense.
The "useless party member" role was given to Koffin-K -- with Chara wearing him to conceal his presence during the festival, and giving him a great deal of unique interactions and cutscenes / cutscene variants.
It's sad we ended up having to scrap some of these ideas, but ultimately I'm really happy with what we accomplished with Koffin Keep -- laying a lot more into a Saturday morning cartoon villain feeling than a more serious superhero/supervillain conflict.

Aside from the Geno Route which simply wouldn't fit the story you're trying to tell, are there any ideas you had for the AU that ended up being left on the cutting room floor?
I think the biggest one is Mettatown, which was gonna be a whole explorable area between Hotland and the CORE. I ended up cutting it partially due to pacing (it was ultimately filler) as well as the need for custom assets. The time it would've taken to make would've just been a lot, and so I decided to just keep it a background location that exists but never got explored. Before I decided to make the final dungeon an exploration of Asriel's psyche, it was gonna have aspects of the various areas of the Underground with spooky lost soul versions of regular enemies. This felt redundant after the CORE as well as the null section of the story, and so I decided to reevaluate the concept for the final dungeon and went for something more explorative of Asriel's psyche, which allowed for more creativity, too. At one point there was gonna be this recurring Temmie NPC who was like an explorer that was scrapped pretty early on because it didn't really add to the story. I also at one point planned a Monster Kid miniboss in Snowdin, but scrapped that as well because it also didn't add much. Before Fort Aquarius, I toyed with having the cut Doge NPC in Snowdin, but then another AU did something similar, and as I expanded the ideas for Waterfall to include Fort Aquarius, I decided to move her there. Even before I chose to make her Fours' iteration of the character, Dohj, his interpretation as a stricter and more no nonsense Royal Guard member influenced how I envisioned her factoring into the story. At one point, I was gonna have a Moldessa encounter in Hotland after the Astigmatism, Parsnik, and Migospel fight, but I cut it for pacing.
I originally wanted to have this silly sidequest involving a fetchquest with some NPCs that would eventually result in taking the Hot Leg and buying a "Cool Leg" from the Tem shopkeeper and taking them to Masa, who would forge them into the Ultemate Armor. This was also cut for pacing and due to lack of energy. That's also part of why I never showed Temmie village, tbh. Just not having enough motivation to do much with it beyond some very loose ideas like Sans wearing socks on the side of his skull and blending in with the Tems for the funny and I think we jokingly talked about Bob and the Temmies dressed as anime high schoolers with the joke being that Bob was their Tempai.

The last (almost) of the Zhentarim subplot lines (There was an 11th file that didn't fit in the post that I'll add separately). I don't know how folks access the dialogue trees so no idea if this is the correct order (or whether a tree even exists) but it sounded pretty coherent to me. Does make me feel quite bad for our dear Zhent <3 Addendum: Fixed one title.

From the datamined dialog/cut content:
Rugan will only appear in the Guildhall if we successfully rescued him and sent him on his way with the other Zhent in Act 1, shipment intact. He's not holding a drink, but is a little tipsy throughout. Merry drunk masking pain. He tells us how all those others were betrayed and executed in a Zhentish power play, and he only survived because he gave false evidence. We can convince him to leave the Zhent, at which point he'll head over to the bar and miss any combat.

Anders: The templars are using the Rite of Tranquility to silence those who speak against them. Sebastian: That goes against everything the Order believes. The Rite of Tranquility is a last resort— Anders: Talk to me when you've seen a friend with his mind in shreds, Choir Boy. Anders: They're working on a deliberate plan to turn every mage in Kirkwall within the next three years.

Fallout 3: Nuka Cocktail
Tumblr media
Were you previously aware that Fallout 3 has an unused asset for a Nuka Cocktail?
The craftable Nuka-Grenade still has many references that refer to it as the Nuka Cocktail internally.
You can check out the page for the Nuka Cocktail here:

All credit to the wonderful @ferociousconscience for pointing me toward some fascinating background information and additional insights about Magnon in the cut chapter 'Further Adventures of M. Tholomyès' [source]!
This omitted section provides us with further context evidencing that, prior to her scheme involving the mômes in 1832, Magnon had been employing similar tactics and using children to manipulate circumstances to her advantage for many years. Interestingly, Hugo even draws parallels to real-life happenings of the time and briefly ties the character within a wider narrative: 'To those who would find such existences unbelievable, it suffices to respond that they are real.'
Tumblr media
Not only do we gain newfound insight here into Magnon's deceitful past and personal affairs when she was 'hardy' and 'young', but this cut chapter also reveals just how long-standing her connection to the Thénardier family really is (a detail which is eluded to in the final novel, but never fully explained).
In fact, the focus of this chapter actually involves Magnon being lent Cosette by Monsieur and Madame Thénardier (for only 3 francs!) so that she can convince the municipal welfare office that she has a child. However, by coincidence, when making her way to the town hall with Cosette, Magnon stumbles upon the wedding ceremony of none other than Tholomyès… resulting in a heartbreaking incident where Cosette recognises her father and calls after him.
Tumblr media
I love the deeper insight we get into Magnon's criminality and deceitfulness in these unpublished sections (which, in turn, also helps to emphasise the influence of gender and patriarchal ideals in shaping a perceived sphere of 'Women's Crime' during this period— where it was commonly assumed that women generally committed less violent but more exploitative crimes in comparison to men).
Moreover, I find this additional information about Magnon particularly interesting in light of the fact that, at one stage in the novel's drafting progress, she may have also been intended as Brujon's mother [more info here], originally being given the name La Brujon instead of La Magnon. I'm completely fascinated by the different avenues this character might have been taken if Hugo changed his mind before publication!

Unused Assets from Resident Evil Village
Okay, let's talk RE8's cut content some more.
Tumblr media
Every key item and treasure you can pick up in RE8 comes with a small icon (to be shown when you pick it during gameplay), a larger icon (to be shown in the items menu), and a 3D model (that you can examine and rotate). And the game files still contain a number of unused assets in those tiny icons, and even more unused assets in the larger icons. Still more were surely deleted before the game was released (id numbers do not go up sequentially), but here's some of the more interesting ones that were left.
Miranda's research books on the Four Lords
Obviously, these books can still be found and read in the game, but can't be added to your inventory, so why would they have icons at all? Presumably, at some point in development, these were intended to be items Ethan would collect in each lord's individual domain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stranger still, the icon versions appear without the family crests decorating their covers, which are separate objects instead. Perhaps originally, you'd have to find the crests separately, and use them as keys to open the books? Or perhaps you'd have to remove those crests from the cover on picking up the book, to use as keys elsewhere ‒ maybe even as keys that you'd need to use to extract the rose flasks, which each feature crests of about the same size.
Tumblr media
Even stranger still, for the four books, only three crests appear in the icons ‒ Heisenberg's is missing. All these objects appear both in the small-and-medium icon files, so this seems pretty deliberate. Perhaps the horse relief you create using the molding machine originally played the same role for Heisenberg? Or ‒ if I'm right about the crests being used to unlock the Rose flasks ‒ perhaps Heisenberg's was never attached to his book, because he deliberately leaves the completed flask for Ethan to find in the Stronghold?
The Goat Crest
This one I've talked about already ‒ originally, there were to be three crests needed to open the gate to Dimitrescu's castle, rather than the surviving two, the third (on the left) being the goat's head.
Tumblr media
A few miscellaneous oddities
Some of the more random unused assets include Moreau's movie poster for 'Ice Castles', which I've talked about elsewhere, an odd-looking bunch of flowers, and what appears to be a hair clip. Possibly all treasure items, possible keys to some puzzle ‒ maybe the hair clip could even be unfolded and used to pick a lock or something?
Tumblr media
There area a few unused key-shaped assets in the files, though most look like unfinished placeholder. But this one, a key covered in cog-shaped designs, looks a lot more finished. Maybe it was an early design for a key used in Heisenberg's domain?
Tumblr media
Much stranger is this weird brick-shaped asset, featuring what look like unfinished-polygon-sides and a bizarre image that looks like a man's face entrapped in mould. It could well have been another puzzle item, presumably meant to be slotted into a missing square in some larger feature ‒ but it's a weird-looking thing even by RE standards.
Disassembled Dolls
You remember the Madalina doll you pick up two pieces and assemble? Well, evidently there was originally another one, which came in three pieces.
Tumblr media
And because those pieces could be assembled in various orders, we've got three different extra icons of it in partial/complete assembled state (the same is true for Dimitrescu's necklace, which needs two extra stones added to it for completeness).
Tumblr media
Harp Carvings
Another interesting one ‒ two harp-shaped-carving decorations, one in gold, and one in stone and apparently broken. I'm guessing these were key items like the angel masks, which would have to be attached to or removed from some statue. Maybe the stone one could be used to replace the gold one, which could be sold as a treasure?
Tumblr media
Assets from Resident Evil 7
These two are both assets that originally appeared in RE7 ‒ the lighter only in the Daughters DLC (appears closed, but note the identical texturing at the bottom), though the syringe was used both for the serum used to cure Mia and/or Zoe, and (with the contents recoloured to green) the E-necrotoxin eventually used to defeat Eveline.
Tumblr media
A lighter is such a generic survival horror element that it barely warrants comment ‒ maybe it was needed for some of the fire-related puzzles in some earlier draft. But the syringe is more interesting, especially as it's one of a minority of unused assets that also appears in the mini-icons, suggesting it may have made it even closer to the finished game.
The syringe appears near the end of the list of required-key-items, suggesting it may have shown up at the end of the game. Was it, like in RE7, supposed to contain a necrotoxin that would have been used to help defeat Miranda? Was the original reason that Miranda suddenly cries "What? My powers are leaving me!" because someone had got her with the needle? Even if that would have explained a minor plothole, I'm kind of glad they left it out: we didn't need to defeat Miranda the exact same way as Eveline in RE7.
Treasure Photos
Finally the unused assets include one extra treasure photo (left below) ‒ another blue bird similar to the one that gives you 'juicy game' from the photo that remains (on the right). Oddly, the extra photo shows the same location where you find the remaining photo of the bird in game. Maybe finding the bird was originally a two-step process, with one photo leading you to the location of the second? Or maybe you needed two lots of 'juicy game' earlier in development? Maybe there was just not enough meat in that tiny little bluebird without a second being needed, IDK ('juicy game', my foot).
Tumblr media
Surprisingly, all four photos come with descriptive text in other files, and it differs from the text that's actually in the game. The unused versions are written in first person rather than third, to sound more like some villager's report: "I saw a strange bird by the graveyard. Never seen anything like it before" rather than, "A photo of a bird as blue as the sky. Where was it taken?"
Tumblr media
"The phantom golden fish! Saw it down in the creek!" "I saw a strange bird by the graveyard. Never seen anything like it before." "I saw a strange bird when I left the outhouse, but the moment I got close, it vanished like a specter." "It was sunset in the fields when I saw it, a pig as white as snow! A bad omen…"
Interestingly, the game files also include a whole lot of unused dialogue for the Duke that suggests he was originally meant to sell information in addition to his other supplies, upgrades and food ‒ "You won't come across this information just anywhere," "A little bird whispered this to me," and "Not to presume, but some advice if I may." It's possible that at some point Ethan had to buy information on treasure locations from the Duke, rather than him giving them to you for free ‒ but it's very possible that these treasure photos, too, at some point had to be bought from the Duke, and the text associated differed to play more into the 'buying information' idea. Pure speculation here, but it would all add up!

wait lurien has cut dialogue??? i am. very curius
anon: Lurien has a cut monologue? I tried to find the dreamer's cut dialogue a while back and barely got a couple of extra lines for Lurien in comparison to monomon who had a paragraph. Also PK offered to sire hornet??? Please tell me where I can find this I'm desperate for more info on the dreamers
...
Well, Lurien doesn't have too much cut dialogue, but here it is: I found it in the cut content section of the Hollow Knight fandom wiki, which requires a lot of dropdown clicks in order to actually get to it
Tumblr media
And a transcript, bc this image is fuzzy:
"For this city and for King beloved, I become bond upon the Vessel."
"That black choice made, but not by me. Our King claimed that burden. My lot is easier, only to sleep and to serve."
"My city. Do you sustain without me? Do you thrive? I would see your streets again..."
"Our King appears as bug, and I shall take him as so. But his are traits that transcend our kind. His is a mind beyond ours. Deity given form. In sleep, I shall not look upon his like again."
"Remember our promise, sister! We three vowed to protect the seal with all of our devotion."
"Remember our bond... our sacrifice. For the kingdom’s sake... for the one we must protect."
He's not very verbose, but it's more so than Herrah's dialogue, which is as follows:
Tumblr media
Transcript:
"For my daughter and my kind, I become bond upon the Vessel."
"Wyrm, your attempt may prove futile, but your offer I could not refuse."
"My child...For you, I would give it all."
"For her, I would give it all."
And here's Monomon's. I'm not even gonna bother with a screenshot lol, she rambles too much to get it all in one piece
Transcript:
"For diversity. For variance. For evolution. I become bond upon the Vessel."
"We sealed that plague, and thought we’d found an answer, but we were wrong. Our sacrifices... what did they win us? A world sealed in stasis."
"Only one path I see. The Seals must break. Will it bring destruction? Of course. It will bring change, too. Let it. To live forever in an unchanging world... Death, I would fear less."
"Will it bring destruction? Of course. It will bring change, too. Let it. To live forever in an unchanging world... that is the only death I fear."
"To sleep eternal, what difference from death?"
"Open your minds, brother and sister. Our vow was to protect...but do we? The Vessel weakens."
"My mind is seal upon that tragic being. But who shall teach them now? Who shall open their minds, where I cannot?"
"So... we found each other after all. Can you see me, here in this forgotten dream? I can see only light."
"Our sacred Hallownest... It was so old. An eternal, undying kingdom... unchanging. They called me 'Teacher', but what did I have left to teach? What did I have left to learn?"
"When the light came, we feared it. Of course we did! So we fought to keep things as they were. Our sacrifices... what did they win us? Simply another kind of stasis."
"We fought against you, too. Struggling against our fate. The light we caged away... it is alive, and we are not. Is that what draws you to it?"
I'm sure that the cut dialogue for Lurien is exactly the same as what you found when you encountered Monomon's, anon, but it does offer us a lot more insight into his character, showing us that he was extremely protective of the City of Tears, that he considered the Vessel plan to be a dark necessity that weighed on PK, and that he was one of the few bugs who actually met PK in the flesh and knew the truth of his nature. That paints a picture of someone who was at the very core of Hallownest's workings, alongside Monomon, who we know had a hand (tentacle?) in knowing the details about the vessel plan- something that fits with the formal 'sister/brother' titles used by them both, even though Monomon also extends that courtesy to Herrah (who seems indifferent to the other two, lmao).
There's also a developer note relating to Lurien that describes his potential character as 'more detatched than the other Dreamers' and 'taciturn':
Tumblr media
Transcript:
More detached than the other dreamers? Maybe ponders how the Hollow Knight (vessel) feels after all this time. Would he make the same choice again? First few dialogues are very taciturn.
Which is something that I think comes across far better in his cut dialogue than just...cutting it out altogether. I get that they wanted him to be detached and mysterious, but what we have in-game is bread crumbs and a floating umbrella rather than a cohesive character, as evidenced by all the shitty fucking takes out there painting him as a 'simp', a 'bootlicker', and a 'creep', none of which really fit the concept of a mysterious, protective bug with ethical concerns about what his god-king was getting up to
