MBARI’s robotic submersibles often spot this little octopus resting on the mud, its orange body resembling a flat, fluffy pancake. When startled by a predator, a flapjack octopus perks up and swims to safety by flapping its stubby fins, pulsing its webbed arms, pushing water through its funnel for jet propulsion—or all three at once. When the coast is clear, it stretches its webbed arms and parachutes back to the seafloor.

Flapjack octopuses, Opisthoteuthis sp., are found worldwide at depths of 130–2,350 meters (430–7,710 feet) and can measure up to 50 centimeters (20 inches). Learn more about these captivating cephalopods on our website.

You look up to find a pair of familiar, big brown eyes gazing at you from across the room. Your husband leans against the door frame of your daughter’s room, a lovestruck expression painted across his face. 

"Ji," you chuckle. "How long have you been standing there?" You question as you try to hush the crying baby in your arms.

His eyes crinkle as a mischievous grin creeps onto his face. "Not that long."

You playfully roll your eyes, turning away to gently place the squirmy baby into the wooden crib LeeKnow had kindly gifted you both when you were newly weds. With your back still turned, you hear Jisung's soft footsteps approach you.

He peers over your shoulder at the now happy baby crawling about, his arms instinctively wrapping around your waist. Jisung plants a slow, lingering kiss to the back of your neck before looking back at his daughter. Her favorite cat plushie, gifted by none other than Uncle LeeKnow himself, was tightly gripped between her small fingers as she swung the toy around her. Jisung’s warm breath tickles your ear as he whispers, "I'm so lucky to have two beautiful girls in my life."

His soft, melodic voice sends chills down your spine as you feel the start of a vibrant, red blush creep onto your warm cheeks. Completely oblivious to the effect Jisung had on you, he starts up a new conversation.

"So," he drags out the 'o' as he gently turns you around. "How was your day?" he continues as his arms pin you against the crib. The warmth in his gaze as he looks down into your eyes is enough to steal the breath from your lungs. 

"E-exhausting," you stutter, as you gaze down at your socks, trying to control the butterflies summersaulting around your stomach. “She’s been fussy all day and barely took any of her naps. Yours?” you continue as you play with the rings on your fingers.

“Busy. We had a packed schedule today.” He tilts your chin up towards him. "What's wrong?" he asks, furrowing his eyebrows. "Why did you stutter?"

You bite your lip as you try to come up with a better excuse than the fact that he still gives you butterflies despite being married for five years. At this point though, your face is so warm you’re more afraid you'll turn as red as the tomatoes you bought yesterday thanks to Jisung’s effortless charm.

"Ah," he says, his brain finally piecing it together. You can practically hear the smirk oozing out of his voice as he states, "I'm just that good looking, huh?"

"Don't flatter yourself," you smile, slapping his chest. Escaping his grasp, you walk towards the door to grab the baby bottle you’d left downstairs.

"Yah!" he says grabbing your hand as he pulls you back towards him. You collide against his chest as his arms snake around you. "I'm just teasing!" he laughs.

You feign annoyance before a playful smile tugs at your lips, the one Jisung never fails to remind you is his favorite. Planting a kiss on your nose, Jisung pulls his head back as he flashes you an adorable, quokka-like smile. "Awe baby,” he says as he admires you. Gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear, he adds, “You're so cute when you’re flustered.”

Your eyes grow wide as your heart starts to palpitate faster, your brain always having the tendency to short circuit whenever Jisung called you baby. "Stop that! S-stop being so cute and charming!" you protest, pointing your finger at him.

He raises an eyebrow, completely amused by your behavior. “You think I’m cute and charming?” 

“Jiiii,” you whine. 

Jisung lets out a soft chuckle. “Okay, okay,” he says as he rests his head on top of yours, gently swaying your bodies back and forth. 

As much as you wish you could stay in the comfort of Jisung’s arms forever, you know your daughter’s going to start getting hungry soon. 

“Ji, I gotta go get her bottle before she starts crying.”

“Just a little longer,” Jisung whispers into your hair as he holds you a little tighter, making you melt into his arms. 

After a few minutes, you gently pull away from his chest to look up at him. “Hey, is everything okay?” you ask softly as your hand cups his cheek. 

Jisung leans into your touch as his voice grows quiet. “Yeah...I just really missed you today.”

Your eyes soften at the vulnerability laced within his voice. “Awe Jisung-ah, I missed you too.”

The start of a frustrated whine from your daughter’s crib pulls Jisung’s and your attention away from each other. Jisung looks back at your daughter with an adoration that makes your heart flutter as she stands by the front of her crib. Her left hand grips the wooden bar as her other hand makes grabby motions towards the both of you. “Hold on baby, we’re going to get you your bottle,” Jisung smiles.

As if your daughter understood, she slowly nods her head. Rubbing her tired eyes, she lets out a soft sniffle. Jisung coos as he runs over to her and plants a kiss atop her head. “We’ll be right back,” he smiles, gently pinching her cheek.

Before you can even process what’s happening, Jisung is running back towards you with a mischievous grin as he sweeps you up into his arms. “Ji!” you laugh, wrapping your arms tightly around his neck as he spins you around before taking you downstairs. As you reach the last step, Jisung gently puts you down before interlacing your hands and skipping over towards the bottle. You can’t help but laugh at his childlike-ness, falling even more in love with the man in front of you. 

Once Jisung grabs the bottle, he gives your cheek a quick peck as he says, “Okay, back upstairs.”

Running over to your daughter, Jisung helps her sit down in the crib before handing her the bottle. Once she was content and distracted, Jisung looks back at you. You’ve been caught staring at the both of them, a loving gaze in your eyes that makes Jisung’s heart beat faster. 

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re in love with me,” Jisung flashes you a cheeky smile.

Instead of giving in to his teasings, you respond confidently, “That’s because I am.” When you see a soft blush coat Jisung’s cheeks, your lips tug into a teasing grin. “Two can play at this game, baby.”

His eyes light up as a smirk creeps onto his lips. “Oh, so you wanna play?”

“No. Jisung,” you nervously state, your confidence flying out the window as you take a step back. “I know that look. Don’t look at me like that!” 

"What look?" he innocently asks, cocking his head to the side. But the expression plastered on his face is anything but innocent as he takes another step forward. 

You can feel the burning sensation crawling its way back into your bright, red cheeks. You silently curse under your breath as he inches closer, corning you into the wall. 

"Jisung-ah," you whisper, but before you can let out another word he closes the gap between you and gently kisses you. Making sure to leave no distance between you, he moves even closer, pulling you by the waist with an ease that makes your insides melt.  

The warmth radiating off his body and his soft lips, fills you with an unexplainable happiness. His sweet embrace never failing to feel like home. He slowly pulls away, smiling like an idiot. Proud of his little plan. You stand there dumbfounded. As you look up into his eyes, you find the same gentleness and unconditional love Jisung had when he had first confessed that he was helplessly in love with you. You can’t help but smile back. 

“You’re a butt,” you tease. 

“Correction, I’m the most handsome man you’ve ever seen.”  

“I thought you were going to tickle me again,” you whisper breathlessly.

“I thought about it, but the urge to kiss you was stronger,” Jisung beams.

Chuckling, you lean back into his arms, “What am I going to do with you?” 

Without hesitation, Jisung says, “Love me.” The teasing in his voice is replaced with a seriousness that squeezes the life out of your pattering heart. “Love me until the end of this life and the next.”

The smile on your face grows as you feel your eyes begin to water. “Always Jisung-ah. I’ll always love you.”

Jisung chuckles. “There’ll continue to be days where loving each other will be hard, but I know it’s worth it. Because despite our imperfect love, I want to choose to love you every day. I want to choose to be a better man for you every day." He pulls you back into his chest as his voice grows soft, “I love you so much, Y/N.”

Nuzzling your head into the crook of his neck, you feel his heart skip a beat. A warm smile spreads across your cheeks as you whisper back to Jisung’s heart, "I love you too and I choose you for better or for worse, always."
