Some people like to settle down with a good book. No-one in possession of a complete set of marbles would like to settle down with a book of magic, because even the individual words have a private and vindictive life of their own and reading them, in short, is a kind of mental Indian wrestling. Many a young wizard has tried to read a grimoire that is too strong for him, and people who've heard the screams have found only his pointy shoes with the classic wisp of smoke coming out of them and a book which is, perhaps, just a little fatter. Things can happen to browsers in magical libraries that make having your face pulled off by tentacled monstrosities from the Dungeon Dimensions seem a mere light massage by comparison.

choose your fighter
(not included: the literal actual grim reaper, who is currently making burgers)
[ID: Five rough pencil sketches on a lined notebook page, all of characters from Mort by Terry Pratchett. Starting from the top left, the first sketch is of Mort. He is standing in a stuff neutral position with a worried expression on his face. He has slightly shaggy, curly hair and is wearing a sleeveless tunic with a shirt underneath, rolled up to his sleeves, and trousers stuffed into knee-high boots. He is also wearing a cape with the hood down, which is obscuring one of his arms. The second sketch is of Ysabell, who is standing with her arms on her hips with an annoyed expression. She has long wavy hair, and is wearing a long empire-style dress with a square neckline, slippers, and elbow length gloves. The third drawing is of Keli, who is standing with her arms crossed looking affronted. She is wearing a long corseted dress, with long bell sleeves with a sharp puff at the shoulder. She has straight hair in layers, with some hair flicking out at her ears while some goes down past her shoulders. She is wearing a tiara. The last two images only show the characters from the waist up. The fourth is of Cutwell, who is has slumped shoulders and a vaguely confused expression. He has short black hair and is wearing a wizard hat and gown with stars on it. The last sketch is of Albert, who is hunched over with an annoyed expression. He has thin hair tied up in a bun and is wearing a plain shirt and sweater and trousers. Each character has an arrow with writing pointing to them. For Mort, it reads ‘gradually losing his humanity’. For Ysabell; ‘Been 16 for 35 years’. For Keli; ‘The universe thinks she’s dead’. For Cutwell; ‘Literally just wants some food’. And for Albert; ‘Has enemies waiting for him in hell’. /End ID]

Probably the biggest (though a bit dubious) advantage of reading Discworld books for the first time at 26 is that you understand every single double entendre
If I were British I would've probably also understood every single sociopolitical reference cause now I feel I've missed a few

I haven’t been posting about it but I’ve been read Discworld for the past month, specifically I decided to start on Mort, and I’ve got to say it was really good. Just all of it, besides Cutwell he sucked, but it was all very fun to read. The only downside is that now that I’ve finished the book I don’t want to read my other book.

rincewind is not the fan favorite of most in the Discworld fandom, HOWEVER he is the only wizard thus far besides Victor (who quit being a wizard anyway, plus that wizard that nanny ogg admitted to having “fellowship” with in Carpe jugulum) to get bitches. he is almost always paired up with an epic warrior lady who defends him and even got kissed by one. even granny weatherwax rejected ridcully back in their days.
I’ve only read up to Carpe Jugulum chronologically so apologies if I’m wrong

Whats your afvorite discworld novel and please go into detail why!!
I think I’ve already said it someplace (/nm) but definitely mort!!!! (spoilers below the cut)
I love the characters so so much the plot is so engaging ESPECIALLY mort’s mini corruption arc?? like that bit where he starts talking in the small capitals and ysabell is like “when did you start doing that you’re scaring me”. plus the fight between mort and death and “he turned the hourglass over” AGH!!! makes me want to bite through a log of wood. also i just love him and ysabell’s dynamic theyre just teenagers who don’t know what theyre doing!!! in conclusion: im care them.

Ok so I can tell you love moist (what queer person on tumblr doesn’t?) but who would you say is your most favorite, underrated discworld character?
Pretty sure that’s the first thing a person notices about me, whether they know who the guy is or not.
But uhhh I haven’t read all the books and it’s 2:30 am so bear with me but- Adora might count? like I love her to death but also a lot of other people do soo (we are not straight). Oo some really niche ones are Mavolio (?) Bent (idk this wet autistic clown means everything to me), Mr Pin & Mr Tulip (they go together, and they’re really really good antagonists idk how they’ve flown under the radar), Cutwell (ugg wizard from Mort, I remember really liking him for no real reason, I think I just really like wizards), most monstrous regiment characters like Wazzer and Shufti (I know it’s just cus we don’t get as much for them as say Polly n Mal but CMON. TONKER. LOFTY. they’re everything to me.) and uhh there’s most definitely more but that’s all I can come up with.

i guess I never actually shared my thoughts on mort as a whole. the thing about terry pratchett's writing is that it will always be a baseline level of good (i guess with the exception of tcom but i havent actually read it yet). even when I don't like a discworld novel that much i still like it. so that is to say, I don't necessarily dislike mort, but it's not nearly as good as some of the other discw books ive read.
one aspect i've already complained about is how overbearingly tongue-in-cheek in can get, and obviously pratchett is The Tongue-In-Cheek Guy, but in his later works he's able to dial it down to a more tastefully subtle level. it's hamfisted enough in mort that it took me out of the reading experience and i felt I had to say something about it.
the other things that bothered me had less to do with the technical aspects of writing and more with elements that could be considered "problematic". there's some racial/ethnic stereotypes that stick out like a sore thumb: klatch and the agatean empire are just caricatures of ancient egypt and feudal japan respectively with all the names changed. and ofc these locations still exist in all the other discworld books. but none of the other ones ive read really go into much detail on them, and when characters express racism against people from those places it's framed as a prejudice of the characters themselves and not something that pratchett actually incorporated into the lore.
i was kind of sort of put off by the fact that ysabell and mort are both 16 but ysabell has been 16 for 35 years? it vaguely smacks of "female character who is supernaturally old but looks like a teenager" but I'm more willing to let that one slide because time doesn't actually pass at death's estate like it does in mortal realm and ysabell clearly thinks and acts like a normal 16 year old so it doesn't come across as weird or creepy to me.
i was DEFINITELY made rather uncomfortable by the subplot between cutwell and princess keli. the book is trying to convince me that a 20-year-old incel lusting after (and ostensibly ending up in a relationship with?) a 15 YEAR OLD GIRL is supposed to be like, funny and endearing i guess? and i was not having it. GET A JOB STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!!!!!!!
so those things make mort noticeably more "a product of its time" and harder to enjoy in 2023, but overall I did find the story quite touching. mort himself is a really good character and I like him and ofc I love Death. anyway those are my thoughts

History unravels gently, like an old sweater. It has been patched and darned many times, reknitted to suit different people, shoved in a box under the sink of censorship to be cut up for the dusters of propaganda, yet it always—eventually—manages to spring back into its old familiar shape. History has a habit of changing the people who think they are changing it. History always has a few tricks up its frayed sleeve. It’s been around along time.

"What made you decide to become a wizard?" [...]
"It's indoor work with no heavy lifting," said Cutwell. "And I suppose I wanted to learn how the world worked."
"Have you succeeded, then?"
"No."

You know...DEATH is a total shipper. He absolutely wanted to hook his daughter up with Mort. While Mort was all over the pretty princess. Who somehow ended up with the chubby nerd wizard. And later got his eyes on Ysabell (finally).
I got you there discworld DEATH....I got you.

Blonde for some reason?? And she doesn't wear a lot pink in this book which is a literal crime
