🪻🌱🐝 💜 🌿 ✨ // violets & violet miner bees // part of my natives + pollinators series // gouache on paper
tiny violet miner bees (Andrena violae) are a specific pollinator: they pollinate wood & dog violets in the Northeast, and show a strong preference for blue violets. letting your grassy yard rewild itself and grow violets every spring not only lets you make violet syrup, it also gives violet miner bees their most important food source and increases local pollinator diversity.

Animal of the Day!
Brazilian Treehopper (Bocydium globulare)
Tumblr media
(Photo in Public Domain)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Africa; Asia; North American; South America; Australia
Size (Weight/Length)- 6 mm
Diet- Sap
Cool Facts- No, those aren’t eyes. The Brazilian treehopper has a distinct protrusion sticking out of their thorax called a helmet. Scientists don’t fully understand why the insects grow these outgrowths, but it could be for a bizarre form of camouflage or dissuading predation. Despite being able to fly, the treehoppers only do so when startled. They prefer to crawl on the underside of leaves as they search for sap. Females lay their eggs directly inside the tissue of a leaf and after a few weeks a nymph emerges. After only a month of life, the Brazilian treehopper is ready to have offspring of their own.
Rating- 12/10 (Of the 3,270 treehopper species, this may be the weirdest.)

It's Wednesday and I have something to share! Thanks for the tags today @artsyunderstudy and @facewithoutheart, I'm so so excited by what you're both working on, two of my favourite WIPs in the game right now!
It's been a while, but I've finally finished up my draft of Chapter 4 of Hiding Out In The Open. Hoping to post by the middle of this month once my lovely beta readers have a chance to help me make it better. For now, here's a snippet of Baz POV. Perhaps you'll recall the premise revolves around post-Watford Snowbaz bonding over a psychology podcast; they're discussing an episode about the psychology of disgust here. Under the cut because, well, it's a bit disgusting (your CW is this: the real life Hidden Brain ep this references is called Crickets and Cannibals 😂).
I curl my lip. “Just because lobster was once considered the vermin of the sea doesn’t mean I’m going to eat a bloody chocolate covered cricket.” My diet is gruesome enough as it is—I chugged the blood of four solidly-built London alley rats on the way here alone—which I suspect is the subtext of this whole display.  Snow basically confirms it. (He practically winks at me.) “Don’t yuck my yum, Baz,” he says breezily, popping another “chocolate” into his mouth with a flourish. (This time he chews with his mouth closed at least. I shudder at every crunch.) He swallows. “And I won’t yuck yours.” It’s all incredibly confusing. Before last week, every allusion and innuendo seemed to indicate that he found my unique nutritional requirements to be utterly loathsome. (Which they, of course, are.) I roll my eyes. “Where do we draw the line then, Snow? Andes plane crash victim crisps?”  He screws his face up. “First off: Gross. And”—he pauses to lick chocolate off his fingers—“you know full well I said I’d be okay with being eaten, not the other way round.” (Crowley below, how did I get here?)

From a conversation in the group chat, folks were talking about Humans-B-Gone and "why did they make the mantis sexy" and I came in like... my guys. Sophodra's apparent sexyness is an act. She acts flirty because it makes her a more appealing spokesbug to her clients. Take away the act and she's basically a socially awkward autistic gremlin (/affectionate) whose special interest is vertebrates, especially humans. Hence why someone opens their door when she's not expecting them to and you immediately see this:

Anyway thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Check out Humans-B-Gone on Youtube sometime, you won't regret it. - Terry

Remake of an old picture (below the cut) of my glasswalker ragabash, Tove, and her totem, uzlolzu. Drawn in greyscale first, which isn't something I usually do but it's fun sometimes.

🌱 🐜 🪽🌿✨// white trillium & ants // gouache on hot press paper
part of my natives + pollinators series. white trillium are a delicate spring ephemeral native to the eastern US. they bloom in the early spring in woodlands, soaking up the sunlight on the forest floor for a few weeks before the canopy grows in. tiny ants help pollinate them for the 4-ish weeks they're in bloom, and spread their seeds on the forest floor.

This is a fanart of Yugica-P's song, Gasou. For this piece, I was inspired by Gustav Klimt's painting, "The Kiss", which is thought to depict a tender and passionate true love. I thought it would be interesting to illustrate a maggot-infested, all-consuming love instead.

Golden Tortoise Beetle (Charidotella sexpunctata)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- North America
Size (Weight/Length)- 7 mm
Diet- Leaves
Cool Facts- Known as a blight to sweet potatoes and morning glories, the golden tortoise beetle is a beautiful pest. It might be surprising to hear that despite these beetles’ brilliant sheen, they are master camouflagers. The golden color comes from pockets of fluid reflecting sunlight within its exoskeleton. When startled, the golden tortoise beetle stops looking so golden and turns the fluid a dark red instead. Even if that doesn’t work, the beetle then plays dead with the hope that a hungry bird will avoid eating a dead insect. The clear elytra surrounding the beetle keeps its softer wings safe and prepared for flight as a last resort option to flee.
Rating- 11/10 (Not a pest in my heart.)

Trippy Isopod (Armadillidium vulgare)
Acrylics on 11" x 14" wood panel, November 2023.
Whether you call them an isopod, woodlouse, pill bug, potato bug, roly poly, or slater, these ubiquitous little arthropods are peaceful and underappreciated little creatures. As detritivores (eating decomposing plant matter), they are an essential part of the ecosystem. They make excellent pets and are easy to care for in captivity, provided their needs are met. They are highly gregarious and social, and the females have a strong maternal instinct and will actively protect their young. Their common name "pill-bug" refers to the fact that they can curl themselves up into a tight ball when threatened. Not all isopods have this ability.

tes summerfest - august 10th - "in bloom / blood"
cw: intense gore/body horror/insects
The Flower King Nilichi stood in the barren center of a circle of flowers. Scorching yellows, burning reds, and raging oranges were tempered with aqueous blues and royal purples, spreading outwards for about a yard from the inner circle.
In the centerline of this row of flowers wrapped a chain of bound slaves. They were men, the men-of-ge, docile creatures. They stared intently at Nilichi, waiting.
“I have planted the flowers and arranged the slaves as you asked,” Nilichi said to the witch, who stood away outside the circle of flowers. “Show me what your god can do.”
“Very well,” said the cloaked woman, raising her arms towards the nearest slave.  “Do not step outside of your circle there. It would be…inadvisable.”
It started with that nearest slave. First an expression of intense exertion entered his face, before contorting into a writhing mass of pain. His flesh pricked and bulged before bursting in so many small pinpricks of blood in bloom. Like poppies, Nilichi thought.
It spread to the others, and they all screamed as so many black insects broke through their skin, tearing their bodies to shreds as they emerged, and took flight. They all gathered over Nilichi’s head in a dark cloud that blotted out Magnus himself, swarming and buzzing above.
Nilichi glanced nervously at the witch, who pressed a finger to her smiling lips. As if Nilichi could have made himself heard at all - the droning of the insects was deafening.
The witch raised her arms over her head, seeming to wrangle with the insects, before they dove into the flowers below, several fighting over each individual bloom in a disconcertingly uncoordinated manner. Then they spread out from the circle, and in their wake they left behind fresh growths, each rapidly emerging from the soil and blooming before Nilichi’s very eyes. They were resplendent, even more beautiful than the ones Nilichi had planted himself, and in a dizzying array of colors and shapes.
Finally, the insects dispersed, seemingly evaporating into thin air. But the buzzing lingered in Nilichi’s ears for the several awed moments that followed.
“This is the power of your god?” Nilichi stammered, stunned.
“Nay,” said the witch, leaning down to pluck a scarlet blossom. “This is my power.”
Nilichi dropped to his knees and prostrated himself before her. “How many more sacrifices will you require?”
The witch blew on the flower, dispersing its petals to the wind. One landed on the shredded remains of a slave’s lips. “As many as you can offer.”
