Honestly, the decapitation scene in the Prisoner route is the most gut-churning bit of gore in the game to me. Possibly because it’s almost understated in its presentation, probably because she was the first route I got, but I was actually grimacing & peeking through my fingers when the Narrator started describing it. And also there’s a really nasty degree of realism to it? It’s… it’s the skin, guys, when her head falls but she didn’t quite make it all the way through. It is a rare bit of written gore that genuinely makes me nauseous, but the stretching skin fuckin’ got me, okay?
The Razor’s explosion is gross. The Fury ripping her skin off is honestly not nearly as bad to me as her skin-dress being all loose & bunched up like that. The Wraith snapping your ankle made me cringe. But watching the Prisoner saw her own head off nearly made me put down the game. (The Razor’s arms hanging limp & loose from her elbows came a close second, and was probably the worst to me as far as art goes. But for descriptive prose & Jonny’s performance thereof alone, the decapitation was so much worse.)

Something happens that reminds everyone nezha has a plant body
It happens in an instant.
One second, the demon is lunging towards Li Nezha. The next moment, Qi Xiaotian is catching his head. His body stumbles back and collapses. In a moment, it poofs into pink lotus petals. The head stays.
Xiaotian can't help it. He screams, torn between the urge to drop kick it and the urge to cry. Nope, the crying is stronger. Tears are already rolling down his cheeks.
He can't help it. Nezha was his friend and now he's gone and-
"Ugh, I hate when this happens."
Xiaotian can't help the next scream because holy shit, Nezha's head is in his hands and it's talking.
"Apologies, Xiaotian. I forgot how jarring this can be." Nezha, or Nezha's head or whatever, says. "Please hold on a minute."
It happens in a minute.
Green sprouts right where the neck ends, coiling and braiding together. Xiaotian released Nezha's head and it stays in place, suspended. The vines continue to coil and move and braid, pink lotuses popping and sprouting before they discolor, turning to the color of skin and hair and...
Two minutes after his head was just chopped off, Nezha stands there. He cricks his neck as the last flower sinks in. Xiaotian gapes. "Again, apologies. The sight is rather strange." Nezha's spear appears. "Now, let's finish this, shall we?"
The demon whimpers.

On a much more serious note in terms of headcanons --
(Spoiler: this will contain graphic explanations of injuries relating to death by decapitation. I'll tag it as well as I can for these things, but just in case, reader discretion is advised.)
So, regarding what happened at Phoenix Gate. The tl;dr of the situation is, of course, that after Elwin was uncovered amidst the rubble, he was taken to Sanbreque, where he was then consigned to life as a Branded.
Let's go a bit more in-depth about this, starting with him being alive.
He was beheaded, straight up. That's one of those "oh shit" types of deaths where there's just no plausible way that the person can survive the wound -- not when it's complete decapitation, as was the case for Elwin. I'm of the personal opinion that his death in that moment was significant enough to the story not to tamper with it.
Fortunately, Rosaria's Eikon just so happens to be Phoenix, and I'll be damned if I'm not going to seize the opportunity this provides for me to it's-magic-I-don't-gotta-explain-shit him being resurrected.
Going to emphasize that word: resurrected.
Elwin died. He was very, very dead. So what I've always turned to for the AU verse where he "survives" is the fact that Phoenix's power is over both life and death. However, as we saw with Joshua when he was working to heal Tyler's wounds, this is not exactly a, "use magic and the wounds suddenly disappear" type of power. Not only does it take time to heal the wounds, its use does seem to impact Joshua physically, and with deeper wounds like the one Tyler suffered, it also appears to cause physical pain to the recipient as the wounds are in the process of healing. So it's less of a magic bandaid that instantly makes everything better, and more of a magical surgical procedure that mends the injury.
What this means for Elwin is that his resurrection would not, and could not, have been instantaneous. Now, obviously there would need to be an order of operations to this: Elwin's head would need to be reattached first and foremost, at least enough for the blood to be able to start flowing again. Based on what we saw with Tyler, my headcanon is that the mending begins from the inside and works its way outwards. So things like the spinal cord would come together first, followed by the veins and arteries, the muscles and tissue.
Once the neck and head are reconnected enough that bloodflow, breathing, etc. can all resume enough that life can be sustained, that is when Elwin was resurrected.
Now, remember what I mentioned up there about the healing working from the inside-out? Imagine waking up, even just barely, to the sensation of the remaining muscles and the layers of skin surrounding your neck essentially stitching themselves back together bit by bit. You have no anesthesia to numb the pain, and you have no idea what's going on; all you know is that you can feel every fiber reattaching to itself with such agonizing slowness.
That's what Elwin was enduring while the fight between Phoenix and Ifrit was going on.
I've mentioned in another headcanon post that he has a scar circling around his neck from the decapitation. Expanding more on that fact, while the scar doesn't normally hurt per se, at least not any more than any other deep scar would -- it is a psychological reminder of the pain that he felt during his resurrection process, and of everything that happened during that night, as well as everything that happened as a result of that night's events. This manifests as a psychosomatic burning sensation throughout the scar.

Ivan’s neck scar
(Cw: mentions of decapitation, mentions of attempted s*icide, violent historical events and mental health issues)
So in case this is new information, Ivan Braginsky does in fact have a scar around his neck
Tumblr media
(not the best image but it’s there under the neck bandages, I promise)
It’s not yet been revealed when or how he got that scar but it’s there and Ivan seems to not what people to see it, much less talk about it. That leads me to believe that whatever happened was a very traumatic incident for him which leads me to a few theories.
Mongolia or Tatarstan attacked Ivan when he was a child.
When a very young Ivan first meets a very young Tolis, he explains to him that living under Tatar is very difficult and that he wants to become a crazy strong country soon so he is no longer under their control. There’s even a brief moment where you can see blood on Ivan’s hands, and maybe even on his clothes, implying he has to fight everyday just to survive till the next day. It’s very possible that Ivan tried to rebel a few times. Given that at the time he was a very small child, neither of the aforementioned older nations probably punished him too severely but I can see a situation where they got fed up with Ivan’s rebellious attitude and either completely or partially decapitated him as a way to show him who was stronger and that if he kept rebelling, they’d do worse.
Either Feliks or Tolis tried to decapitate him.
Both Lithuania and Poland we’re having wars with Russia/the Soviet Union starting in the early 1900s and some of the battles got really intense so there might have been an intense fight between 2, or even all 3, parties involved and one of them struck a deadly blow to Ivan. Tolis in particular is stated to be a very disciplined and competent combatant so I’m definitely leaning more towards the idea that in the heat of the battle, Tolis either particular or completely decapitated Ivan.
A human attacked Ivan during one of the many revolutions that occurred in Russia’s history.
I specifically think Ivan was attacked during the attack knows as “Bloody Sunday”(St. Petersburg January 22, 1905). We see time and time again in the anime and Manga, especially with Russia, that nations have to follow their bosses orders to the letter even if they personally don’t agree with what they’re bosses are doing. He was most likely ordered to join the imperial forces and shoot his citizens, some of whom did try to fight back before dying. I don’t think they fought back enough to go too deep, but I do think the human who attacked him most likely picked up some scrap metal and at the very least cut through his exterior and anterior jugular veins.
He’s done it to himself…multiple times
You don’t live through some dark times and come out unscathed. His history has canonically caused psychological damage to Ivan’s psyche that persists into modern day. It’s very likely that living through so much traumatic history would leave him with depression and PTSD at minimum. He has more than likely tried, on multiple occasions, to end his suffering by attempting to take his own life but has never succeeded because of his immortality.
Whatever the cause, I definitely think it’s caused physical issues such as his voice being as high pitched and airy as it is. He sounds very young and childish, as if his vocal cords didn’t develop properly once he hit puberty. He’s capable of deepening his voice but he has to actively force it, such as when he’s mad and wants to sound intimidating/threatening or during character songs when his voice slips into a deeper tone when he’s actively forcing his voice. When he laughs it’s a very airy “ufufuf” sound. That might also be due to vocal damage and if he’s ever in a situation where he’s laughing so hard, he’s holding his sides, he’ll most likely have an eerily silent laugh where he only makes noise when his trying to take air into his lungs. I also imagine neck is very sensitive and he doesn’t allow people to touch him there unless he absolutely trusts them with his entire being. Swallowing might also be a problem for Ivan, especially if he’s eating very hot food.
Of course he also has some self esteem issues because of his neck scar. Looking at it makes him feel ashamed because it’s a reminder that he was weak enough to let someone hurt him. It’s also a reminder that people didn’t like or trust him in the past so he thinks that’s still true. It’s a scar that reminds him of all that he has suffered and of all the people who have hurt him, it’s a reminder that he’s survived over 1,000 years of hell on earth.
