COLOUR WEEK

this is the week for playing with palettes and working on your colour theory skills! if you're really struggling with these ones, don't worry about drawing scenes or characters, you can just have fun splashing colours around on an abstract canvas!

11 🤍 RGB a set or primary colours typically used in digital/screen art - red, green and blue!

12 🤍 CMYK a set of primary colours typically used in traditional/print art - cyan, magenta, yellow ... and key (black!)

for both of these days ↑ you can add in black and white. and feel free to combine the two days into one, if you're struggling with a three-colour palette! use all six!

Be not afraid, for I will reveal my secrets in rendering step by step.

1. After I'm finished with lineart, I added the base color. It's faint, but putting in gradient will make it pop.

2. In order for the whole thing to look harmonious with each other, on top of the base color I added a multiply and overlay layer. The color I use for multiply is usually desaturated, kinda pastel-y. The overlay one is more saturated (see alternative colors below).

3. The result should be kind of dark. Which is what I'm after, because what you're seeing is already shadowed. So instead of adding the shadow to the base color, I'm adding the light.

On top of the multiply layer, I added an overlay layer. I keep in mind where the light source is coming from (see the blue arrows). The color of the overlay can be whatever -- it depends on the vibe you're trying to make (e.g if they're in waterfall, I'd use light cyan).

Also, see that normal layer clipped onto my overlay? It's how I added my "fringe" (aka subsurface scattering). I often use pink. Just line it on the edges of the light.

4. Now I added a multiply layer again, just to give the piece more depth and details (like the skin)

5. Now I'm adding what's called reflective light (google to see examples irl). Basically, I covered the darkest parts of the drawing with something lighter. For this one I just added pastel purple in the normal layer, but there are other layer types to lighten it up!

6. Now, I colored the lineart through clipping. I usually just matched the surrounding colors by adding a darker one (e.g dark red for skin).

Optional: I like to make 2 copies of the lineart, make one red and another cyan, and respectively slide it to left and to right. Sometimes it doesn't even look good tho....

7. Highlights time! To do this I disable the background so it's transparent, click right and choose 'merge visible to new layer'. Which flattens the visible image onto a new layer. Now I can add in these white lights by clipping on top of it!

(It's a lil tricky to do this right with a brush, so I used the lasso fill tool.)

To top it off, I add some sparkes. My simp art is done <33

Edit: I forgot!! By the end of it all you can add a texture by setting said texture into overlay with low opacity (on top of the finished art). In CSP you can add a perlin noise, one of these:

You can use other kinds of textures for ur artwork, like watercolor etc.

Ooo, your take on the Kris Soul color theory is really interesting, I’ve never heard that one before! A combo of patience and integrity does seem fitting though, I’m def vibing with it. Any other reasons you theorize they have an azure soul?

sdgjklsjdg no uh. i forgor exactly how it started, friends and i did a lot of soul color wheel charting and it just seemed like a natural fit. they do have dark blue in their color scheme as well as cyan and the sense of Self is really important to them as a character so bringing in integrity just kind of made sense

there is one other small thing tho:

-rose, between perseverance and "determination" (for lack of an official red soul term), so stubborn and tenacious and not letting things stand in the way of their goals

Y'all ready for my hilariously candid unpopular UMK ranking!

Obligatory preferace that I'm just an opinionated bitch. This selection is overall really strong and I'm very much excited for the live show. I think a lot of these songs will make or break during the live. I also think there is an odd disparity in the obvious budget and set quiality for the 7 music videos. Almost like they had a different line-up and some songs were last minute replacements.

I also did not factor in whether a song would do well in eurovision at all because frankly rn I do not care.

This ranking will also probably change so like who cares, I'm ready to enjoy a great liveshow full of people who give a shit about their art.

Ok, here we go!

7. Vox Populi - Mikael Gabriel

The general sound of this one is fun and easy. Good filler or backgroud music. Like if it came on in shuffle I probably wouldn't skip it. However, the lyrics are like really bad. Especially in context of the seeming general opinion of this man I am seeing. Also, this man is strategically pandering and a. Its not working, b. No on seems to have noticed. The use of Matti and that obviously käärijä influenced face in the music video smacked me on first watch. He is capitalizing and I'm very curious to see what he does with the live. Not excited, just curious.

6. Dancing with Demons - Cyan Kicks

I liked Hurricane better. There its been said. I do enjoy listening to this but I forget about it a lot. It also took me until basically now to kinda remember what it sounds like. Meanwhile I can still think of the Hurricane chorus 2 years later having not listened to it since UMK 2022. I do think Cyan Kicks has a really good fun sound, I just don't vibe with this song all that much.

Also, this bears no weight on my opinion of either song. But I need to call out the hypocrisy I've been seeing online. I've seen so many people comment that they don't like the amount of autotune Sexmane uses in Mania and then go on to say how much Dancing with Demons showcases Susanna's voice. Like...... there is so much autotune on Dancing with Demons. It will not sound like that live. And that's fine, its clearly an artistic choice that fits with their musical style, like Sexmane. But pls just sit with that for a bit before complaining about the, frankly much less, autotune in a rap song. Tangent rant over.

5. Kuori Moi - Sini Sabotage

This is where my ranking will probably swap a lot. This song is really catchy and I ingeneral like this type of music. I call it chill sex. This is also a very fun unserious song and video played straight, and I appreciate that. I am worried about something with vocals this chill live. They're good vocals, but very intentionally monotone and if the staging isn't engaging it might fall flat. This song is mostly at 5th place because I dont have anything bad to say about it, but it doesn't stand out quite as much as some of the others. I adored her interview tho.

4. Paskana - Sara Siipola

This is a great power ballad while still being upbeat. It doesn't drag. The vocals are great. The music video is great even while being very simple. The lyrics and message are really really good too. This song gets stuck in my head a lot and I think it is, on a technical level, the stongest song this year. I really hope the staging supports the song but with how raw and peeled back the vibe of the song is it will be difficult to make staging that is engaging without being distracting.

3. No Rules! - Windows95Man

Pure unashamed 90s nostalgia schlock. This is very much the type of trashy eurodance I enjoy, so home run for me. I think the staging will be very fun, but maybe too much. Or it will be organized chaos like Portion Boys last year. Speaking of, this is definitely this years silly fan fave that will be well received but probably not win, a la Portion Boys and Teflon Brothers. For being trashy eurodance, I do think it is construced very well. It flows and it actually written well, its bad on purpose and it is successful. Is it the most original or masterful, no. It is very enjoyable and fun and low pressure, yes.

2. MANIA - Sexmane

This one gets stuck in my head the most. Good beat, good flow. I really like the sound of the chorus, including the auto tune. The lyrics hold more than I think comes across initially and you can tell Sexmane really connects with this song the way his voice delivers even in the studio version. This is the song that I'm most excited to see live because I wanna know what kind of staging he pulls out. Side note: I think it's really funny that the brother called Sexmane is less sexual musically than the one just called Isaac.

1. Glow - Jesse Markin

This is just a really phenomenally written and positive song. It is really nice to have some good classic rap at a competition like UMK. The flow is impeccable with his rapping too. There's a lot of American artists who can't write that well in english. The message of this song is really uplifting without feeling hollow because it recognizes you gotta actually work at being in a good place. Jessie is someone who knows exactly who he is as an artist and person and that translates into the song. Also Alpaca!

I think the the songs that have the biggest chance of winning are Paskana, Dancing with Demons, and No Rules!

But truly I have no clue how this will go. This is a very evenly matched line-up both in quality and fan reception. The live perfomances will 100% decide the outcome.

- I really wanted a sharp nose for xer. With one of my earlier tf designs I started doing this thing with like, having their nose be outlined/different colored, nose Bridge included and I was super into the look so, hoping to do that with this one as well.

- Flowy and curvy, but sharp features. Yget me? If you can believe it, the whole Victorian esque/monarch/duchess kind of look happened damn near accidentally. I wanted to take shape inspo from the Nautilus shell (and sea shells in general), so I ended up with that helm. Idk why I decided to do the neck the way I did but also, the seashell ornament looking thing on the throat was meant to resemble like, Nautilus tentacles (ykno those little ones?), but tucked away lol. Unintentionally giving off underwater upper class vibes. But that's fine. Zes not any upper class tho.

- I'm really digging what's happening with the back there, I kinda wanna get some mermaid vibes with the body shape. Somehow.

- Not sure what I wanna do with the shoulders, I don't think I like the spikes, but I feel like it should emulate some shell aesthetic nonetheless.

- Can't decide if I should give zer blank eyes or should I give em pupils as well. Guess I'll feel around w it. Very pleased w the eye and eyebrow shapes tho!

- I'm aiming for a sort of androgynous look but like, not in a way that looks gender neutral but like. Have a good scoop of gender. Like there's clearly a nice heaping of gender but it's just a mixture. I do like how curvaceous ze is currently, and I did consider making xer even bulkier but I'm debating about how I'd do it and how it would look. Like I do really want to do a heavier body type but I don't want it to look heavy in a way that's. Warriorly..?? But heavy in a way that a seal is (smooth lol)

- I'm thinking seafoam greens and cyan esque colors for this one

2. who are some of your style icons?

as a kid, i really loved avril lavigne's music and style, so i naturally started to love the way she dressed. she used to have a brand called abbey dawn, and although it was my least favorite album, i really liked her "the best damn thing" vibes. i had always liked scene fashion, not knowing what it was called; i liked loud colors, clashing patterns, etc. specifically, in this case, i LOVED the combination of pink and black, of pop and punk, of girly and messy - (not from the same album, but to quote one of her songs "i am a motherfucking princess, you still love me").

not too much later, i got into lady gaga's music too, and of course, her fashion style blew my mind. i loved how she was so experimental, not giving a damn about what others might say of her. my favorite era of her was "the fame" (and again, quoting a song from another album, "to crash the critc saying 'is it right or is it wrong?'").

my current style, at a first sight, is very different from those two, but i think the core remains the same - they taught me that fashion is a way of expression.

as i started growing up, i also discovered j-pop and k-pop so i blame kyary pamyu pamyu and girls generation in that sense (i miss ~2013 kpop era orz). again, full of colors, kind of in-your-face feel.

and then- i discovered lolita fashion and i loved it (as well as other j-fashion styles). my first lolita icon was a girl who had a blog on blogspot. this year i tried to search for it but it's no longer there q.q nowadays, i follow a lot of people whose styles i love, so i have a lot of style icons i guess. it'd be hard to name them all, that's why i did a little timeline with my very first inspirations.

3. what piece would you consider to be your best find?

umm possibly my ichigo millefeuille skirt!!! i got it second hand for a pretty good price ^^

11. what are your favorite shoes?

converse all star chuck taylor!!! i have owned them since i was 10. when they get old, i buy a new pair. i can't live without them. i have owned many black pairs, a black with white stars pair (which i used to wear with hot pink lace on one foot and cyan lace on the other, in full lilia vanrouge fashion), and i currently have a pink pair and a purple pair. they are both pretty torn apart, so i should buy a new pair some time soon. can't decide on the color tho...

22. what do you wear on a comfy day?

so most of my days because i almost don't go out haha. i just wear sweatpants, a t-shirt, and a hoodie. yes i can dress normal sometimes too!

27. do you ever diy your clothes?

no, not at all. i am very messy with manual stuff. sadly, i am also a perfectionist, and that is a bad combination. i would like to learn to sew with a machine but well, i have yet to find the time to go to classes for that and all...

Okay okay so!!!

Canonically they don't have official genders or sexes, I don't think they're ever referred to with any gender related pronouns, but in my lore they're all AMAB, but every single one of them except for Blurk turned out to Not Be Cis, with Cyzer being non-binary while Cregal and Rhygenta are trans girls.

They're wisps that were genetically modified with Black Arms DNA by Eclipse when they were still in their eggs - there were originally a lot more of them, as shown in Shadow Fall, but when Eclipse’s escape pod crashed on Angel Island, a lot of them sadly didn't make it, leaving just the four we know and love.

This is the first time we see them fully revealed in the comic. Did you know that I used to constantly get Cyzer and Cregal mixed up? The two are rather similar and have a shared character trope of "siblings that fight", so let me say that Cyzer is the cyan one, amd Cregal is the red one.

Each of their names are a combo of two different words that describe them in each way, one word being their color, while the other one is just something that's relevant to that Darm specifically in some way

Cyzer (I pronounce it "Ky-zer", yes even tho Cyan has a soft C) = Cyan + Lazer (their ability)

Cregal (I pronounce it "Kre-gul") = Crimson + Eagle (a reference to her ability - which is to give whoever uses them wings to fly with)

Rhygenta (I pronounce it "Re-jen-tah") = Magenta + Rhythm (She's special in the fact that "Magenta" ALSO refers to the type of wisp she is/was originally, and also while in a meta sense, "Rhythm" is a reference to it's ability, since Eclipse didn't know Rhy's ability at the time, it's probably story-wise referencing how they resemble a eighth note in shape)

Blurk (i pronounce it "Bl-urk", that one's a given) = Blue + Lurk (I'm not actually sure how this one relates to him? I figure Eclipse just picked a word that sounded cool for that one. Blurk's ability is to make the person who uses him invincible for a brief amount of time)

Admittedly, Blurk, Cyzer and Cregal in canon are just kinda There. Like yes, they're cute, amd are great companions and "minions" for Eclipse, but they don't have a ton of character beyond a few traits. Cregal and Cyzer are messy, they fight, and give off a vibe of general cockiness, and Blurk is also messy (even more so), grumpy amd one can infer from him apparently needing to be reminded to chew his food - impatient.

Rhygenta on the other hand, has more going on. This first apparence of her and her siblings already sets the tone for the whole ass character arc she gets throughout the Total Eclipse storyline. Eclipse says that while she is well behaved, they don't seem to have any powers.

Rhy's arc is very much a side-plot thing, but there's enough there that it's pretty easy to see why it's the fan favorite among her and her siblings.

We don't see them again until the next issue of the arc, as Eclipse has gone out on their own to hopefully get food, and maybe try again to convert Shadow who knows-

But, ignoring the source pronouns used for Eclipse, here is when the Dark Arms first fully realize the situation they're in, and immediately get an antagonistic view of Team Dark & Friends, obviously pretty pissed off/concerned that these strange people want to harm their caretaker. But for now they're left to let these feelings fester while Eclipse is out fighting.

Take note of each expression in the second panel- Blurk, Cyzer and Cregal are visibly angry, ready to fight, while Rhygenta is scared and worried. Though no words are used to convey it, this is another building block of Rhy's arc.

Once again we're made to wait until the next issue to see these four again, but when we do see them once more - Eclipse has returned to them, amd they make their yearning to join Eclipse in their fight against the heroes known, with Cregal once again being the first one to speak - what a talkative gal! Eclipse is doubtful, not wanting them to get hurt, but agrees to it, which excites them - and probably the reader too, as we're about to get a lot more Darms action!

In a confrontation with Rouge, Relic, Omega and Fixit (Oh. And Julian too. He's our fucker to hate this arc since Death is dead), Eclipse uses a variety of Dark Arms abilities to render them unable to stop them as they take the Master Emerald. Take note of how everyone gets to show off their power - except for Rhygenta. Again, a non-verbal (or non-dialouge-bal?) detail to further along her arc. A lot of her arc is like that, and I find it pretty unique! It's a subtle little B-plot that you more pick up on re-reads rather than your first time through.

Since this post is getting rather long, let me skip to the end of the arc, when the climax of Rhy's arc happens

In the midst of trouble, Eclipse once again calls upon all the Dark Arms, except for Rhygenta. Blurk, Cyzer and Cregal quickly become tired and unable to fight, amd all hope seems lost - until Rhy steps in and reveals that, despite what Eclipse had thought, she is in fact the strongest of all the Dark Arms, blasting Knuckles and Shadow away with a Sonic Boom, giving Eclipse and the others enough time to escape out of the situation alive and well.

That's all for canon lore, and also for the images, as I've reached Tumblr's image limit 😔

BUT

The Era of Shadow is essentially a sequel to this arc, taking place a few years later.

The Dark Arms, while still being kids obviously, have grown a good bit, taking the initiative to learn Hi-Bloosiæne (Blarms language) & English in order to communicate with more of their brethren than just Eclipse. Rhygenta in particular has taken an interest in genetic engineering just like Eclipse, and after doing a ton of research on it's own and with Eclipse, created her and their siblings darkling bodies to inhabit and pilot in order to both feel closer to Eclipse and the other Black Arms once they meet them, and to better be able to present their gender identities. These bodies are able to shapeshift just like regular Blarms, and basically work like bio-mech suits.

While Rhygenta is obviously the most book-smart of the four, none of them are necessarily dumb, and work together with Eclipse and each other very well.

how to fix grainy gifs

you won’t 100% but this helps a little 💕

idk how many of you are using this already but hopefully it will help someone out when saving gifs. but basically in this tutorial kinda thing i’ll try to explain how to play around with your colour palette to have your choice of 256 colours bc PS can be a b*tch. 

sometimes when i save a gif none of the settings look as good as a want them and gifs end up looking a bit more whitewashed or just plain grainy. so here’s what i do as a last resort after changing the coloring 81516 times, making the blacks darker, getting rid of colours or making to colours a bit more homogeneous (i.e.: shifting megantas to red, shifting cyans/greens to blue etc etc)

01. have your gif ready... safe for web all them usual stuff

02. have the 2-Up tab active in case you don’t already

03. sort your colour palette by popularity

we only need this step to know which colours we can get rid of

04. get rid of the last 1-2 rows

this really depends on how grainy your gif looks before this. i usually just start with one row and if it’s still bad i get rid of another. but select (with ctrl/cmd or shift) the colours you don’t need (since we are sorting by popularity removing these won’t be that big deal) and just click on the bin icon.

05. add your colours

now since this part of photoshop is extremely user friendly and highly intuitive we are going to do the following. click on the color picker and from your original gif click on a colour you want in your optimized gif (i usually do this with 1600% zoom so i actually see what i’m clicking on)

now at this point all the settings will disappear because the original window is selected, so we need to go back to our hand icon and with it select our optimized gif (here the bottom one, duh)

and now once we are back we can click on that paper icon that’s supposed to be an add icon according to some designer at adobe apparently

once you are done, the colours you added will have a square in the corner meaning they are locked, so even if you change perceptive/selective/adaptive your colours will remain, so you can also play around with those if you feel like it. if none of them vibe with you, you can get back to your palette by clicking on custom. 

if for some reason you don’t want your colours anymore, you can unlock them, by clicking on this in the option menu.

06. save as usual business

also don’t forget to marvel at your creation that basically got like around 1.4% better, but as a CC your soul will feel extremely calm, even tho nobody else will be able to tell. but you’ll know, deep down you’ll know that it was way worse before all this. but we still only have 256 colours so like.... don’t get your hopes up that much ahsgdfasd
