There's always the debate with cyber prosthetics like "will you even be you still?".

This doesn't account for people in accidents, hurt in the military, or people (like me) who might have been born with any manner of condition.

I would swap out my spine in a flash if I could. Thoughts?

The general consensus is that digital prosthetics steal your soul. But you won't have any choice. Superhuman prosthesis will give anyone who wears it an unfair evolutionary advantage. You won't be able to deny it, just like smart phones..

Star Wars Ultimate Sheet 2.0

Okay so I have rework slightly on my previous character sheet for Star Wars. Same as the previously, it have made as an help to develop your original star wars character, but also canon etc... I use it to put down all my ideas for a character, as well than picking up some ideas to develop an OC whith competence than I wasn't thinking of before (like picking up details for an unusual weapon, or crafting skill etc)... Ace is a delivery guy or something; nothing bad he just wants to keep his head down. Make sure his family is safe. Anyway one night he ends up taking a package to a penthouse. Not a problem, rich assholes usually tip pretty well. But instead of a party he stumbles across a crime scene.

Client is dead on the floor, standing above is a a man covered in black clothes, a helmet with glowing blue eyes, the Phoenix. The Phoenix, a ghost story. They were someone once, the story has changed so many times no one knows the truth. A man saw his family murdered in front of his eyes, a child who escaped government experiments. A beast wearing the skin of a human, lying in wait. They say the Phoenix was a hero once, but now only graces dark alleys as a bounty hunter.

Ace is terrified of course, because no one sees the Phoenix and lives, so he books it. Calls 911 and everything, police come find the body. No one thinks Ace saw the actual Phoenix, probably just a copy cat.

Anyway a few days later Ace meets someone at a bar. The man is tall and funny covered in hundreds of tattoos and the bluest eyes. His name is Marco, and Ace is just the tiniest bit in love.

(The Phoenix uses huge curved blades along the arms, like wings)

Marco's getting too old for the work any more. Pops' health is bad and getting worse, there's younger people on the scene who do it better with less witnesses. Hell he's trained a few of those kids himself by now.

The latest mishap was a matter of bad luck. Marco had been late to the kill and the whole thing was sloppy. The cherry on top was the witness himself: some young nobody with the prettiest eyes he's ever seen, terrified out of his mind. Marco can't fault him for running.

It's definitely a sign to retire if he's ever seen one.

It's also definitely a sign of something when, the night his family throws his retirement party (low key, chilled out vibe in a bar run by a friend of the family), he meets the witness again.

And fuck, not only does he still have the prettiest eyes Marco's ever seen he's also got the most gorgeous scatter of freckles over his face and the smoothest voice he's ever heard. He's fucked and he knows it. The tats hide the seams where his cybernetic prosthesis blades are folded and tucked away into his arms, synth skin hiding the glow of power lines from his chest to various parts of his body where his other prosthetics are. He's never been more grateful to his sister for talking him into getting the stuff made to hide it all than when this idiot kid asks to buy him a drink.

He does make sure to punch Thatch, playfully, in the arm later for wolf-whistling at them when he catches the kid literally cornering him for a kiss.

i’m back on my bullshit and neither y’all nor tungle can stop me.

i was thinking about a sci fi au for elden ring, and my first thought would be that the greater will is some sort of supercomputer, with the elden beast as it’s robot tank body, while marika and radagon are two twins that were fused through brain uploading, put on an android body with replaceable parts (would explain the hair) and named president or something along those lines by the greater will. its golden order would be a program/virus that rewrites how the world and the minds of those connected to the “network” work

the frenzied flame and scarlet rot are corrupting viruses created by rival supercomputers, to destroy/corrupt whatever they can. the dark moon is similar to the greater will but it doesn’t really care what its viruses do, unlike the others; it also has a great probability prediction processor. the fell god straight up took the law of equivalent exchange as its prime directive, and used the giants (i don’t have a scifi equivalent for them YET) as its subjects, before being (mostly) deactivated. the dragon outer god is an old supercomputer that got deactivated, though its programs are still in the network (though as far away as possible from the greater will’s core). destined death is another supercomputer, but its viruses, rather than corrupt, straight up kill whatever systems they come into contact with. the formless mother is yet another supercomputer, that wants to supplant the greater will as the shadow ruler of the world (it is also fueled by blood, somehow). the crucible of life is just how the network works in its natural state.

the gloam eyed queen managed to form and alliance with destined death, and spreads its viruses along with her cult, the circuit-wearers (since gods are computers and androids and cyborgs, the term is the equivalent of godskin lol). maliketh is marika and radagon’s half-brother, who got upgraded into a cyber-werewolf by the greater will, and who took down the cult, trapping the most potent virus used by the gloam eyed queen into his energy sword (somehow turning it black in the process?).

malenia got corrupted by the scarlet rot as soon as she was connected to the network, and it’s been slowly affecting both her mind (twisting her thoughts) and body (overheating and corrupting her implants, causing damage to her body that necessitated removal of limbs and creation of prosthesis to replace said limbs). she became a master swordswoman to compensate for this, same as canon.

morgott and mohg were born incompatible with most implants, and with the network, so they were outcasted and thrown into the undercity (the deepest and worst part of leyndell) as “omens”. after they were brought back to the mansion of their family, morgott managed to find an old model implant that worked on him, and was connected to the network, eventually becoming the shadow president. mohg, on the other hand, got nabbed by the formless mother, and became so enamoured with it and its promises that he began a cult in its name. his deformed look is caused by prosthetics he willingly put on himself to “be closer” to the formless mother.

miquella was born with... something (still determining what) that stunted his physical growth, though his mind is far sharper than most. after the greater will and his parents failed to create a cure to malenia’s condition, he took his sister and built his own skyscraper (the erdtree is a giant golden skyscraper btw), where he planned to upload his mind to become a supercomputer himself, all while providing energy to the building and surrounding area, before mohg kidnapped him and took him to the formless mother’s core, where miquella resides under forced sleep, while mohg uses the formless mother’s blood fuel to try and make miquella into a supercomputer under the mother’s control.

rennala was the ruler of a rival state to marika’s, before she married radagon (or rather, marika/radagon using a male android body) after a war. she specialized in energy weapons and hacking, before radagon left her under the greater will’s orders later on. after the whole “ranni killing herself” thing, she lost her mind, and tried to implant an incomplete copy of ranni’s mind into her university students, who were all driven insane by the process.

ranni was chosen as a possible successor to marika, along with miquella and malenia; however, just like in canon, she wanted none of it. she stole the code to the destined death virus from maliketh, and created a knife imprinted with it, with which she killed her (implanted) body, but left her incorporeal mind existing in the network, with which she later took over an android body made by seluvis.

godwyn, after beating fortissax, one of the cyber dragons, managed to form an alliance between the greater will’s empire and the cyber dragons. he was killed with the same knife that ranni created, but it didn’t completely work: while it wiped his higher functions, it failed to wipe his most basic ones, such as bodily ones, essentially leaving him a vegetable. however, some fragments of his mind were left in the network, and spread through it, eventually arriving at the implants of dead people, who were resurrected through these fragments; among them, fia.

I think there’s something interesting with how Cyrax joined the OIA in the old timeline. Like, he got his humanity back and thought “You know, the Lin Kuei kinda sucks, how about I join these guys and become a gi joe?”

With that said, I kind of wish we had something like ��Kuai kept around some of the cyber limbs for people who need prosthesis at Cyrax’s request.” I think that’d really make an compelling moment where this thing that was invented to enforce control and dominance becomes a way to help those who need it.

You mentioned something that is related to GoT and I gotta info dump about Jaime's prosthetic for a second because it is something I genuinely enjoy the show for NOT doing.

I love the fact that they never just attached a blade to the end of Jaime's arm or made the prosthetic hand capable of properly holding a sword. This is due to the fact that neither situation would ever work.

If you were to go with the "just attach a sword to the stump" well, now you just got a stump with a blade. Since his hand was amputated above the wrist, he has no mobility to actually use the sword. He is only able to use slashing motions IF THAT. He is limited to only using his sword and elbow to do an activity that the wrists and fingers do at least half of the activity for.

If they decided to make the hand have the ability to hold the sword, that has the same problems as the previous with MORE. Jaime's prosthetic is said to be made out of solid gold, and with the average hand weighing around 400 grams, the solid gold hand is already an astronomical weight in comparison. Adding a sword to that is already incredibly dangerous because swords are not light either and as someone who has inherited a variety of swords from my deceased grandfather, even a short sword would be too much.

This isn't even taking into account the fact that amputees and people lacking a limn require a twice as much energy to move the limb that they lost. i.e. You loose your leg below the knee, that knee and hip has to work 2x-7x as much to compensate, especially with a prosthetic.

i don't often see characters in fantasy books with prosthesis beyond the usual like, cyber-punk, magical bullshit. y'know, the stuff where you can tell this person only added in prosthesis bc they thought it looked cool.

but i am currently midway through Godkiller by Hannah Kaner, which i am finding very fun, from an obsessed-with-gods perspective. and one of the main characters, in the prologue, loses her leg. throughout the rest of the book (up until the point im at, at least), she struggles with her leg. She has a prosthesis, but she misuses it, wearing it for too long and for purposes her prosthesis is not meant to be used for, and its something that causes her constant pain and irritation.

I won't speak for how good the rep is, it's not my position to state that, but it really opened up my eyes to how often fantasy uses prosthesis as a cosmetic, rather than actually paying attention to how they function. Like yeah, functioning sword hand would SEEM cool, but how would it actually... function? clearly, not well.

i just think books need to pay attention more that just bc something isn't as 'cool', doesnt mean it's worse than the 'cool' alternative. sometimes it's actually better.

A personal cyberpunk project

Hi, my name is Constanza, I am 22 years old. I am studying my last semester of Visual Arts at the University of Chile. In this post I will talk about a project that I have in mind to carry out about two topics: cyberpunk and prothesis concept.

I have been working on the construction of a prosthesis in relation to the cyberpunk concept. This concept emerged in the early 80’s and is defined as a subgenre based on the science fiction genre. Etymologically, this term comes from the prefix “cyber”, which refers to computing and technology, and “punk” is related to rebellion against the capitalist system in a world of marginality and dystopia. In this style, the coexistence between high tech and low life.

One of the most notable characteristics of cyberpunk in anime is the fusion of the technological and the human. Characters are often equipped with cybernetic enhancements, such as neural implants, cyborg eyes, bionic arms, and more. An iconic example of this fusion is “Ghost in the Shell,” which follows the missions of Major Motoko Kusanagi, an elite cyborg in the public security unit. The series questions the nature of identity and consciousness in a world where the line between humans and machines is blurred.

Understanding the concept of prosthetics

Regarding aesthetics and language.

My references regarding this project were always from anime, works like: Akira, Ghost in the Shell as I mentioned before, Ergo Proxy, even Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion. Other references that may be somewhat similar to this genre and the concept of prosthetics are the video games Bayonetta and Destiny.

The language of forging and the materials that concern it seem appropriate for this project, since industrial technology has a lot to do with metal. However, here I find it interesting to create a prosthesis that involves technology added to the body, with the difference that it has not been manufactured industrially or systematically, but rather made consciously and by the hands of a human being.

Therefore, this prosthesis supposes this relationship between the industrial and the human, an analogy that this genre, although it is part of science fiction, is not far from being a reality today. It also reflects on the problem between the fusion of technology and science as a tool to help human beings, but at the same time also as a double-edged sword, since both in fictional stories and in reality they are the great organizations who have access to this cutting-edge technology and the power that comes with it.

World Building June Day 15 - Novum’s Technological Advancements

I’ve been looking forward to this day, as I’m going to cover a lot of the advanced technologies present in Novum. Novum being a Cyberpunk style setting is naturally going to have a lot of futuristic technologies, naturally used for all kinds of things all over a moral scale. But I’ll be covering 3 big things I want for the setting.

AI

Autodynes (Flying Cars)

Starting off the most prevalent technology is the cyber modification, or cybermod for short. Cybermods are what you expect, cybernetic technology used to modify a human being, originally made as a form of medical therapy tool, early forms of cyber mods were prosthesis that had been hooked to nerve endings and muscle groups, they were functional but weren’t quite to the level of full on replacement just yet.

As technology progressed, and the early conflicts of the Withering Years started, cybermod advancement became a big focus as more and more troops were returning with grievous wounds or missing limbs. As they advanced so did their functionality and use, even developing new avenues.

Nowadays cybermods cover a wide variety of modifications and augmentations, granting superhuman abilities, though offset by maintenance needs and financial cost ultimately. Most people you see on the street who have cyber modifications, have 1 or 2 at best, 3 if they’re wealthy enough.

The biggest suppliers are Atlas Innovations from Greece, Tarracota Tech from China, and Rossum Universal in Germany. Smaller companies such as Sigma Dynamics in Boston (no relation to Boston Dynamics) have begun work following the standards and providing high quality more affordable models.

The development of Athena Genetics Programmable Biomatter (Genepaste as it is colloquially known) was also a great boon to cybermods as it allowed for the creation of contact points to circumvent rejection syndrome, the genepaste would grow flesh around the connection housing and connect nerve endings in a way that the body recognized the mods as part of the body.

Said Genepaste has also been used to develop biological augmentations known by the public as Genemods, these are more expensive modifications that require no active maintenance and use the body’s own healing as a way to repair themselves. While they’re useful they can’t really go any further past peak human as compared to cyber modifications. Good luck seeing anyone with one of these on the streets.

Cyber-modification has advanced far enough that the human brain can in fact be housed in an advanced life support system called a braincase, and be installed into fully mechanical bodies, as while the cybermods do confer increased strength, they are still limited by the organic body they are attached to. Fullborgs are not an unusual sight but they are uncommon, as a fullborg may be capable of greater physical strength and armor, it still requires proper life support and sensor nets to replicate human feeling. With factors such as those they are far far more expensive than most base mods.

Next up is Artificial Intelligence. AI is a big part in setting and is found in so many day to day tasks, there is even a Tiering system for AI and how it works.

Tier-1 - Autonomous systems that follow programmed paths and respond in a variety of preset ways to stimuli, commonly seen in security machines and basic soldier units. Enough clever programming that they can adapt to external factors but still ultimately require a response from a dedicated command.

Tier-2 - Smart systems found in synthetics and company androids, made for more social work, these units are equipped with advanced machine learning and can operate for long periods of time independently. They’re not exactly super complicated by today’s standards but numerous enough that they fill the jobs they need.

Tier-3 - Intelligent Systems used by various corps and independent agencies for organization of information and streamlining of bureaucracy. These AIs take the complexity from organizing humans and attempt to make order out of chaos to preset parameters, incredibly independent with enough complexity to even form opinions and biases, but useful nonetheless.

Tier-4 - Known as Governmental Systems, these are incredibly complex computer systems that function on independence not afforded to Tier-3s, managing millions if not a billion people every day. Their role is to smooth out government and national bureaucracies and provide counsel and suggestions to the leaders they advise, no ultimate decisions made and the Tier-4s seem ultimately “happy” with that.

The programmers of these systems take pride in their “ethical guidelines” they have set out that have made these things ultimately safe for day to day use. In a big surprise to everyone the recovery from the Withering Years has been made easier by the AIs in use, and no sacrifices of lives for the “Greater good” has come about.

Finally we come to the Autodyne, the Autodyne is a specialized brand of VTOL made by Swiss Manufacturer Archimedes International. The Autodyne is an automobile shaped VTOL that has become popular among the rich and powerful, as well as numerous police forces for its distinct shape mimicking common cars and vans.

The Autodyne can reach common speeds on the road no issue and then be swapped to a flight mode with ease, though flying it is a different beast entirely. You have to announce a flight plan, follow preset paths presented to the flight computer through AR, and even have actual pilot training just to use it, and not crash instantly.

For most of the common people looking to own a model, their best bet is to get their hands on a decommissioned police interceptor through auction, though these have all flight systems and controls stripped out and are little more than fancy looking street cars at this point. Most are hoping that the most recent model, the Peregrine, suffers a few accidents to decommission a few and give people a chance at getting their hands on one.
