D. Preman Niles — The Lotus and the Sun

The political discussions in America are not about whether or not there is an American empire. The point is conceded. Rather, the discussion is about whether or not it is a good thing or a bad thing. Allied to seeing it as bad thing is the fact that in handing over to the president the power to implement the agenda of the empire, the Senate and Congress have by default created an imperial presidency, which has disastrous consequences for the system of checks and balances enshrined in the constitution and furthermore has a corrosive effect on civil liberties with the argument that the war on terror and the maintenance of security override other considerations. There is now also a discussion on whether the American empire is sustainable and whether its decline has already begun.
