Just posted the first part of my vampire Anders AU. It's the story of how Anders becomes a vampire in that AU and exploring the idea a bit before I dive into writing something longer. It's kind of fucked up so please mind the tags.

Canon-ish AU where Hawke is a vampire (sexy handers edition)

Hawke, a vampire but not a mage, doesn’t approach Anders for maps before Anders sets off to the chantry to rescue Karl. Instead, Hawke tracks the elusive warden down just as he starts fighting the waves of templars. He intervenes just in time, but Anders is gravely injured so he bites him to start the turning process to save his life (since lbr even with justice he wasn’t winning that fight against all those templars).

Anders wakes up in the early morning back at the clinic, with a strange man staring him down from across the room. The man introduces himself simply as Hawke, and explains that he rescued him from the templars who almost certainly would have killed him. Anders asks about the other man there, the tranquil man, and Hawke says it was too late to save him. He was only able to save Anders. It's devastating news to Anders, though in the back of his mind he knew he wasn't going to win, but at least he would have died beside Karl.

Now intertwined by fate, Anders learns exactly how Hawke saved him. He could have sworn he was on death's door! Hawke explains more of what it's like to be a vampire. Sunlight directly touching him will severely burn him, even killing them with prolonged exposure. But the clinic is in Darktown, and most of his life can still be conducted at night. Not to mention, Hawke has invited him on a trip to the Deep Roads, where sunlight never touches so their entire trip would be safe. He owes it to Hawke for saving his life, and he'll hopefully get some funds out of it too.

As vampires, they must drink blood. Hawke finds willing people easily in Kirkwall, but sometimes it's from unwilling victims too. He explains that some people will sell or trade their blood to him, but drinking too much too often will kill his sources. Vampire venom has a aphrodisiac effect on others, so they're so consumed by lust that they don't even notice they're being drained. The unwilling are at least consenting to the rest of it and have a good time. Hawke finds his meals where he can--though the older the vampire, the less they need to drink.

Anders doesn't love the idea of hurting innocents as a healer, so Hawke offers to look around for more people who would willingly sell him their blood. But in the meantime, Hawke says Anders can drink from him directly. Vampires drinking from other vampires doesn't taste as good nor satisfy as long, but it works. As previously warned, Hawke gets the aphrodisiac effect from Anders--flushed red, chest heaving, hard beneath the belt. Their eyes connect, and Anders feels it too, like it's contagious. He offers to help Hawke finish with his mouth, it's only polite, not that it's any chore since Anders finds him super attractive.

Now being available during the same hours, Anders accompanies Hawke about on his business. He learns that Hawke is over a hundred years old, lived all across Ferelden but most recently in Lothering, and escaped the Blight just as many others have. Anders learns about vampire culture, which of course varies depending on the region that the vampire is from, and how vampires don't tend to turn many because of territorial issues. Too many vampires gallivanting around Thedas would eventually spiral out of control, especially with the blood ecosystem, so the remaining vampires tend to only turn their lovers if necessary.

Marian isn’t usually one for drinking in places with loud music and too many people but she’ll grudgingly admit that the bar Merrill suggested isn’t the worst place they could have ended up. The band isn't bad and the beer is cheap so she’ll take it, even if she would have preferred just to stay at The Hanged Man. 

Most of the others have wandered off to watch the band and dance, while Marian has stayed behind with the other members of the group who don’t see why going for a night out with friends should have to involve leaving the comfort of their seats for anything other than getting in another round of drinks.   

She and Anders are in the process of teasing Varric for his aversion to loud rock music when Marian is distracted mid-sentence by a familiar sensation she’d hoped not to feel tonight. Of course there’s a vampire here somewhere. Because it would be too much to ask for just one night off. 

She sits up straight, casting her gaze slowly over the dim room, trying to locate the source of the uneasy feeling down her spine.

Somehow, Varric beats her to it. “Hey, isn’t that your friend over there?”

He points and suddenly Marian sees him. Fenris. What in the void is Fenris doing here?

Thank you for asking! I spent ages trying to think of a meaningful moment to answer this with but honestly, I think my favourite dialogue moments I've written are all the silly parts in Night Shift where I got carried away writing the characters as chaotic idiots.

Here's the moment when Anders and Garrett are planning to rescue Karl from a clan of vampires and it's supposed to be a lead up to a very tense and emotional moment but then this happened (I don't think proud it the right word to say how I feel about it. It was just fun to write 😂):

“How do we do this?” Garrett asks.

“I… have no idea.”

“Alright. I know I was somewhat dismissive of this idea before but what if we did just try knocking and asking?”

Anders stares at him. “I mean… that sounds like the opening to a horror film. But go on?”

“ Yeah? Okay, yeah, I get that. But think about it. Merrill said the house was recently sold. So who dealt with the estate agent? There must be someone there who’s not just going to try and eat us on sight.”

Anders can’t quite believe he’s having this conversation and yet he finds himself uttering, “What if they ate the estate agent?”

“Anders? Can we try for at least a little bit of optimism? It was your idea to come out here, after all.”

Of course. Because Garrett’s input has been entirely sensible and reassuring so far.

“Right…” Anders forces himself to breathe. “Optimism is good… So, option one is to knock on the front door and ask if Karl is home.” He doesn’t know whether he wants to laugh or be sick. It feels so unreal. Surely there’s no way it can be that simple. “Then just hope whoever answers isn’t an estate agent eating maniac.”

“Right.”

Anders tries to think of a second plan but it feels like grasping at straws.

“Option two… We could stake the place out and see if Karl shows himself.”

“Which could take Maker knows how long.”

“True…”

Garrett looks uncertain. “I don’t want to sound as though I’m anything other than one hundred percent invested in my supportive role here but usually I bring snacks to stake-outs.”

Anders doesn’t even bother to ask. Somehow it makes perfect sense that stake-outs are a thing Garrett feels familiar enough with to have a usual way of going about them.

“What’s in the glove compartment?” Garrett asks.

Anders gives him a look but ends up humouring him anyway.  “There’s a packet of sherbet lemons.”

Garrett wrinkles his nose. “What is Bethany’s problem?”

“Can we focus?”

“Uh, yeah. Of course. What I’m thinking is that we don’t seem to have a huge amount of options.”

“That’s the impression I’m getting too.” Anders sighs. “Alright. Take the car back to the gate. If we’re doing this, we’re giving up all attempts at subtlety anyway.”

“Option one?” Garrett asks, raising an eyebrow.

“Option one.”

Garrett turns the car around and heads back towards the gate. As he pulls up next to it he says, “If this goes badly—I mean, if we’re attacked, we take out as many as we can and we get the fuck out of here. Sound good?”

“Sure... Great.” Anders stares up, past the huge iron gate, to the house where Karl supposedly now resides. “I mean, it’s almost a plan.”

Fenris and Hawke begin getting used to living together but there's an incident at the clinic.

In his life, Hawke had gone through many different roommates. From living with his family to friends that came and went from his life. He was a sponge for company, even despite the risks. Working night shifts allowed him to subtly subvert any abnormality about his unusual sleep cycles – sleeping in the day, awake all night. It wasn’t like he could advertise for a fellow vampire as a roommate on craigslist, no one would take him seriously.

           When he asked Fenris, a newly turned vampire, to be his new roommate, he considered himself prepared for just about anything, given his past experiences. However, Fenris proved to be the best roommate he’d ever had, and it turned out he need not worry after all. He was quiet, perhaps a little unnervingly so, cleaned up after himself, and even seemed to get along with Biscuit. Not that it was easy to get on the bad side of that big loveable dog, of course, but he usually was a good judge of character. It was everything he wanted in a roommate, though he supposed he could stand to be a little more sociable. Fenris would make an excellent house husband, he thought to himself, should it ever happen to him. If he could pay the same gentleness to a child that he did with Biscuit, he would do just fine.

           It was best not to get too caught up in thoughts of domesticity, for he could feel his cheeks burning the more he pictured it. Fenris, beautiful Fenris, sat with an equally cute baby in his arms – gentle eyes and a soft smile. He was losing his mind, wasn’t he? It couldn’t be helped. When you’ve lived for hundreds of years and none of your own created family to be had, it got a little lonely. Fenris just so happen to be the victim of these fantasies this time, given their recent intimacy. It wasn’t like their predicament had suddenly made Fenris unattractive.

No Scarves

Sullen Vampire AU - feeding from the thigh - for @medievalmeme​ ilu (an au where Cullen is a vampire as well as a templar in DA2; here be feeding, blood, kissing and frottage. also i wrote this drunk.)

It had been their little secret, between Cullen and himself. It didn’t take long for Samson to realize there was something different about his new bunkmate in the Gallows. Cullen was twitchy at first, his moods growing strained and more irritated as time passed. Samson originally pegged it as trauma—the curly-haired boy had been recently transferred from Kinloch—but it was soon apparent that it was something more than that.

But that was nearly a year ago, and many months have passed since Samson learned Cullen’s guarded secret about who—and what—he really is. In a way, Samson proclaimed it his duty to care for the young vampire’s needs. It wasn’t at all what he intended to do from the start, but he couldn’t just let Cullen go starving nor prey on some poor unsuspecting soul somewhere on the streets of Kirkwall.

So when Samson feels a weight settle on his mattress in their room in the templar barracks, he immediately knows who it is.

“Lookin’ for something?” Samson asks, voice rough from sleep. There’s movement under his blanket, the weight of a man settling somewhere around his waist. He peels back the wool, revealing his roommate’s crown of golden curls.

Cullen’s amber eyes stare back at him in the moonlight streaming through the room’s singular window, almost as if they glowed in the dim lighting. The man gives him a tired smile, baring his fangs in a show that only Samson is privy to. There’s something else in his expression, something that Samson has a difficult time reading at first—the obvious signs of hunger... then a search for permission?

“You fed just this morning,” Samson says with an annoyed huff. His hand instinctively moves to his neck, rubbing at the healing bite marks that littered the skin there. “Anymore than that and I’ll have to start wearing scarves under my plate. Meredith will have a fit.”

end-of-year fic writer roundup

thanks so much to @another-rogue-trevelyan, @blarrghe, @sapphicvalhallas and @barbex for tagging me in this - it was great to read all of yours <3 I’ve not done much art, so will stick to fic!

word count since I started writing in June, according to my bad maths and AO3: 35,595 published, 52,751 overall

new things I tried this year: fanfic in general! I’d never read nor written fanfic before roughly April this year, but it’s been one of the few great things that rona’s introduced into my life. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy writing, but the best thing has been meeting some ridiculously lovely and talented people along the way.

also, digital art. I haven’t drawn since GCSE art - so in about 7 years - but I thought why the fuck not teach myself how to art?

fic I spent the most time on: definitely the multi-chap pre-Origins fic I don’t talk about because it’s not great, but otherwise, my modern AU one-shot La vie en rose, or my first Carver/Merrill fic Go On Home.

fic I spent the least time on: I wrote 95% of and she said honey, take me dancing between 12 and 2 a.m. one slightly delerious Saturday night, but it turned out surprisingly well to say I’d almost forgotten what words were by the half-1 point.

also, the two fics I’ve written as part of @dadrunkwriting so far, which has been a wild amount of fun.

favourite thing I wrote: oh god this is a hard choice. La vie en rose made me grin like an idiot the most whilst writing, but I love Grimoire a whole lot because WE ALWAYS NEED MORE SOFT HANDERS. I also love all my Carver/Merrill fics dearly - but probably …honey, take me dancing the most.

favourite thing I read: THERE’S TOO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM. so, I'm gonna take a leaf out of the wonderful @another-rogue-trevelyan’s book and highlight a couple of the creators who’ve brought me insane amounts of joy this year:

what to say about @veorlian other than that they’re frantastic in every way? their writing is incredible, their OCs make me feel many things (I would take a bullet for Dhava), and the messages I get from them that start with ‘this but Marian and Garrett are wearing it to the Winter Palace’ are one of my main sources of serotonin.

@kirkwallgremlin is the queen of Carvistair, and such a wonderful person to boot. Emily has such a talent for capturing character through small details and dialogue, makes wonderful OCs, and also has the best headcanons - please write the roommates au thank you xx

any time I see @pinkfadespirit post a work, it’s an instant reblog because my god, their writing - from longfics to ficlets - makes me FEEL SO MANY THINGS. Night Shift is incredible and everyone who needs a DA2 modern vampire AU should read it right now.

do you want a bloody good solavellan modern AU? @oxygenforthewicked’s written it. Beneath the Veilfire is so so good - the characterisation is fantastic, the modern setting is done so well, and the writing is beautiful.

writing goals for next year: write more, get better, shout about other writers forever. other than that, learn how to actually plot? maybe write some smut? also, WRITE A LONGFIC.
