im so interested in what u think the moon boys would be like as dads???

Ohhhhh, this is gonna hurt my heart. In a good way. I have a lot of feelings about Moon Dads and I've not yet written fics about it so yeah...

I'm gonna jump right in with Marc.

I think if Marc had a child, he would be all in: attentive, tender, affectionate.

I don't actually believe Marc would be afraid of parenting. I know that can be a popular hc/fic plot and I totally understand why, and love reading those.

But I think Marc would be one of those people that would try to do the opposite of what was done to him. Example: his parents were married and that went well... (sarcasm)

Yet Marc got married. He and Layla were together for years and, according to her, had "adventures together", meaning they worked as a (likely successful) team. Marc bailed on Layla once his mom passed and he could no longer control or hide his disassociations (plus Khonshu's threats for Layla to be his next avatar).

Point being: Marc did get married and seemed pretty successful at it, for the most part.

Marc is in charge of bath time. This includes little toy boats, fish that squirt water, bubbles. He's going to wash their hair, or whatever hair needs they have, depending on race and hair types. If it is a hair type he isn't as familiar with, he is going to be talking to his partner, looking up vids, whatever it takes. Touch is going to be so important to him. He is the dad who will know how to do french braids or styles for textured hair.

He's never going to react in anger. If he is angry, he's going to hand the reins to Steven or sometimes Jake (if he is able, it's obviously not a parlor trick), or he will just say to his little one, "Daddy is going to take a time out. I'll be back in a minute and we can have a talk." The idea of putting himself in time out is so endearing to his child that they end up calming from whatever misbehavior they were attempting, wanting to join him in the corner for time out, touching a plushie or reading a book in his lap.

They learn very young that their father's expressions can be stern but his hands are safe. They will not want to disappoint him.

Steven can converse naturally with children, this we see in the first episode. Steven's open, engaging nature is great for children. His own childlike wonder will shine in fatherhood. He was also able to quickly redirect the behavior of the girl who was littering at the museum. So a spunky child in a doctor's office waiting room will be easily wrangled by a distracting toy, quick game or wonderful story.

Steven is your go-to guy for bedtime stories. With a young child, Steven will share how wondrous the world around them is. He'll always have a anecdote or a fun fact for tweens or teens.

He will offer choices. "Do you want to put on 'jammies now or after a story?" "Do you want to help Dad set the table or feed the cat?" Steven has lacked agency in his life, so he is going to give it to his child. He will teach them to speak up for their needs.

Jake is going to be such a little shit as a dad. I'm sorry but there is no nicer way to say it lol. Jake's used to operating in the background and he's a night owl. He's the fun dad. He's the "don't tell mom" dad (or don't tell dad, dad). Kid wants stay up 15 extra minutes? It's Jake that's gonna sneak them some of the popcorn he popped after they were supposed to be asleep. As a partner, you'd find your little one on Jake's knee in the most comfy chair, watching the Yankees play baseball.

You give them The Look™ and they know they are busted. They exchange guilty glances and then Jake starts repeating words in Spanish. Baseball, Popcorn, very good! If you are already all Spanish speakers then Jake pretends to be practicing in both Spanish and English.

Either way, he and his little twin, with their adorable curls, give you shit eating grins.

Moon Dads/Teen Reader

Jake, Steven and Marc had been worried about you lately.

You'd been so much quieter and practically throwing a tantrum anytime you had to go to school and you were in high school now, they thought he was past this stage.

Marc came into your room after he'd let you stay home.

"Y/N? Can we talk?" He asked as you turned around in your bed and looked at him.

"Okay..." You whispered as he sat on the side of your bed and looked down at you.

"What's wrong, darling? And don't say nothing because you're my kid, I know when something is wrong." He whispered as you turned away from him.

"Sweetheart, please don't turn away. You can tell me anything, okay?" He said placing his hand on your shoulder.

You turned around and he could tell you were holding in tears.

You sat up and leapt forward to hug him as you began to sob.

He held you tightly and rubbed your back.

"It's okay, I'm here." He whispered as you sobbed your heart out.

"I'm sorry." You cried out as Marc held you even tighter.

"Tell me what's wrong, baby." He replied, as you continued to cry.

"My teacher... He-He..." You tried to get out as a million thoughts ran through his mind.

"It's okay, you can tell me. You're safe." He whispered as you cried even harder.

"He made me touch him." You muttered, the words replaying in his head over and over.

He could feel Steven's fear and Jake's absolute hatred and anger.

Marc held you tighter as you cried.

"I hate him! I hate that fucking school! I hate everyone! No one believed me!" You screamed in frustration as Marc tried to calm himself, he could torture and murder the teacher later, but right now you just needed him.

He gently rocked you back and forth as you cried.

"This isn't your fault, none of this is your fault. You don't have to do anything, no more school, no nothing okay? There's nothing you need to worry about, we'll take care of everything. All you need to focus on is getting through this." He wusipered, holding you close as your cries began to calm down.

You were fast asleep in the middle of the night when you felt someone shake you awake.

You groaned and turned over to see Jake.

"Mi amor, I know it's late. This terrible man that hurt you... I've got him here, and he's paying for what he did. Before I dispose of him... Do you want to make him pay for what he did?" He asked as you looked at him in shock.

"Really?" You asked as you slowly sat up.

"Some people heal by forgiveness... Some people heal by slitting peoples throats, it's up to you. I'll be the one to kill him, but you sure as hell can hurt him." He said as you looked at him and nodded.

He smiled and gave you one of his blades.

He lead you to their 'office' they'd never let you inside and you saw the teacher beaten up tied to a chair.

Thankfully he was gagged so he couldn't say anything.

You ran forward and slapped him hard across the face.

Jake watched with satisfaction while you carved the word 'Rapist' into his thigh. Once you were done you stabbed the knife into his shoulder and spat on him.

"Piece of shit!" You screamed before Jake grabbed you and hugged you tightly.

"Close your eyes, mi amor." He whispered as he pressed your face into his chest to dull the sound of his gun.

"You did so well. I'm so proud of you." Jake whispered as you kept hugging him.

"Can we get pizza?" You asked making him chuckle.

"We can get 10."

I love the idea that all three of the moon boys have taught Abi to be nice and think before she speaks and even keep things to herself. But they know that deep under all the kindness she can be the meanest little girl because she has Steven's sass, Marc's lack of fucks, and Jake's attitude.

Like she's talking about a girl who was being mean in her class and Steven says 'Well maybe she's having a bad day." and Abi just goes "Yeah. I'd be having a bad day too if my pigtails were that lopsided.".

Or maybe she's being grouchy and Marc says "I don't like your attitude right now, young lady." and she gets him with "And I don't like that you're getting in my business.".

Not even Jake's safe, and he's an enabler. Jake scolds her for doing something she's not supposed to and she says "And yet you still run lights.".

And they can't tell her anything because where did she learn it?

Hi! I just wanted to let you know I loved "Small Surprises." I'm a single mom (boy mom tho) and its nice to read stuff with single mom's as the reader. Its very rare especially in a fandom such as this one. Its actually pretty accurate (to my experience with parenthood) and I loved Victoria she is precious. My favorite part was how they met Jake. That was so cute! I laughed very hard at the end with Khonshu! Excellent job!

Honestly the love that Small Surprises has gotten has absolutely floored me. I adore reading the comments and tags on what people thought of it! It makes my day when I get a blip and see what new things someone has to say about it 🥺

I had so much fun writing it and the dynamics they all began to work out with one another.

Especially Jake! I loved how Jake was with Diatrice in the comics and I just had to make sure Girl Dad Jake was there. He's the protector, the big brother, the guardian... And so much more! I love making sure to write that part of Jake in, as many people saw him in the show and just assumed he was some cold, calculating hitman on Khonshu's behalf. I wanted to show he is so, so much more than what little we saw of him.

Steven having a tiny friend to hyperfixate and stim with will be so good for him, and Victoria having someone who completely understands her will certainly help her come out of her shell with other people more, knowing that just because she's different, doesn't mean she's alone. Yes, Mama knows (and tries to understand) about her baby's tics and mannerisms, but she doesn't know about them, y'know? Steven sure does and he's more than happy to engage with her!

And of course there was Marc having all the reality fall down on him on what he/they started to mean to that sweet little girl when she called him Daddy. I imagine with everything he's been through, Marc is terrified of it all. He's worried that some part of his childhood could resurface in some way. That line of thinking will be addressed in the second fic, for sure!

And ah, of course! Khonshu. I had to squeeze him in there somehow. But don't worry! He won't be as bad as some people may be anticipating (like he is with the boys...)

Steven loves his darling girl

He treats her like a fragile being when she’s a baby

He makes sure he’s holding her correctly, reads every book and article he can on child care

Loves assisting her during important milestones

Needs to be part of every one of them and hype her up!

Once she gets to stage where she can laugh, Steven will do all it takes to get her to do so

Loves to hear to her laugh

Reads to her every night

You know trips to the museum are a must

Will teach her everything he knows about history, literature, and, of course, Egyptian mythology

Will answer every question his little Marcy has

As she gets older and develops her own interests, he does his best to show an interest in them, even if he doesn’t really get them

“Well, this singer certainly likes to scream, huh?”

“I have a booklet with the lyrics, if that helps,”

“Thank you darling,”

He tells her about the weird stuff he thinks she might like to know about like the mummification process, dark romantic literature, crazy torture devices from history

She explains to him her makeup process when she’s cosplaying and will give some information on the character she’s portraying if he isn’t familiar

He’ll listen with a very open ear and ask questions

She, in turn, will listen to him ramble on about whatever he wants

She does get a little embarrassed at times like any other kid since Steven does tend to try too hard and can’t help but still see her as his little girl

But like Marc, she’s very protective of him. No one is allowed to treat Papa Steven poorly!

She appreciates everything he does for her, even if she won’t always admit it

Does anyone else ever think about the possibility of (in a marvel/dc crossover) Tim Drake getting adopted by Marc Specter/Steven Grant instead of Bruce

Like Tim’s parents decide to take him on an archaeological dig and they get murdered and Marc or Steven are there for reasons (mercenary? Archaeologist? *shrugs*) and he finds like a nine year old Tim and says “is anybody gonna adopt this?” And then doesn’t wait for an answer

Also I’m gonna say Khonshu is nice in this au he’s like the systems dad (Marc is his favorite child) and that Tim and Khonshu have an agreement that if something happens to Marc Tim will be the next Moonknight (Tim definitely becomes they’re Oracle)

Also Bruce and Steven/Marc start dating and that’s how he eventually adopts Tim as well Boom (they probably met because of Tim knowing the batfams ids)

ahhhdjdjd sorry for replying so late ;_; but i have major baby fever right now omg here we go…

steven would totally give you the most adorable reaction in the world when he first finds out.

you decide to surprise him after dinner one evening. he’s telling you all about his day as you’re putting back clean dishes in the cabinet, trying your best to stay calm, but the excitement is buzzing high.

“babe, can you check the oven for me, please?”

steven gives you a puzzled look as if it’s such an odd request.

but to be fair, it kind of was.

“check the oven? what for?”

“please, honey? just open it and check.”

he doesn’t question you a second time, although you can see a brow raising, his face scrunching in confusion.

“sweetheart, why is there a piece of bread here? when did you put this?”

you bite back a chuckle as steven waves the dinner roll in the air.

“a bun in the oven? well, isn’t that strange…” you hinted because, at this point, you’re not sure he’s going to get it any time soon.

“yeah, a singular bun in the oven? is this some sort of prank ‘cos sadly i’m not getting it, my love, sorry—”

for such an intelligent man, steven could be so clueless at times. it’s absolutely endearing ofc. you truly love that about him very much.

but when the realization finally hits him—oh, it hits him hard.

“WAIT, ARE YOU TELLING ME WE’RE HAVING A BABY?”

steven’s eyes light up like the shimmering moon, the look of shock slowly easing into a wondrous expression that has your heart skipping a beat.

his bright smile soars across his face as you tearily nod “yes,” and before you could say a word, he’s rushing to you with wide open arms.

“oh my darling, we’re having a little one. this is really happening, is it? i’m not dreaming, am i?”

he soothes a hand over your belly as you press a soft kiss to his temple. “this is real, steven. you and me, we’re going to be parents. we’re going to have a baby.”

you chalk it up to hormones, but the moment steven kneels down to your belly, softly introducing himself as “dad” for the first time, the tears start flowing, your heart swelling up with love for him and your child.

(Marc finally gets you back in his life and he promises to never let you go again)

He softly ran his finger over the skin on your arm.

He admired you like you were a brand new doll. You were so pure and innocent, seeing the world through your eyes made him so happy.

Now, he finally had you back.

It wasn't his fault that he had to hurt so many people in the process, they knew he would be coming back to get what's his.

You were so precious and fragile, no one understood that but him.

Everyone treated you like you were an adult, but you were only 17! You were a child and no one had ever cared for you, he was the only one in the world that could care for you properly.

He watched as your face began to wake up, he knew you would be confused and afraid but you would understand soon.

"Easy, baby. Daddy's right here." He whispered as you opened your eyes and looked up at him.

"Marc? You whispered as he smiled softly.

"Hi, darling girl. I've missed you so much." He whispered, pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"You shouldn't be here, Marc. You know you're not allowed around me." You muttered tiredly as he ran his finger over your cheek.

"You don't need to worry about that okay, baby? I know your mother didn't want me to ever see you again but I'm your father, darling. I should be allowed to see you. And I know she doesn't treat you well, the court said she was the best person to care for you but she isn't, is she? Look at you baby. You're so skinny and pale daddy would make sure you're healthy and eat properly." He said as you stared at him.

You knew your father could be pretty possessive and because of his mental illness the court decided he wasn't good enough to care for you.

"I missed you." You whispered making him smile.

"Oh, sweetheart. I missed you too, so so much." He replied pressing a kiss to your hand.

"Do Steven and Jake miss me as well?" You asked making him chuckle softly.

"Of course they do, babygirl. We all love you so so much. Was your Mom treating you right, baby?" He asked, you looked at him and hesitated for a moment.

You didn't want him to get angry.

"She's just really busy with work that's all and when I have to talk to her on top of it or I need something it stresses her out. But, she works really hard and makes sure I have a roof over my head and food." You replied making Marc sigh.

"Babygirl, she should be caring for you so much better. You're so precious to this world and she treats you like you're just a roommate to help pay rent and clean." He said as you felt tears in your eyes.

You really had missed him, and he was right, your mother never really treated you like her daughter.

"I missed you, dad." You whispered as you began to cry.

Marc helped you sit up and he wrapped you up in a hug.

"Oh, baby. Come here, that's my good girl. You can stay with me, okay? Daddy will sort everything out, all you need to do is be good for me and relax and take some time off life." He said as you sniffled and nodded.

"What about school?" You asked as Marc held onto your tighter.

He hated the concept of school and never wanted you in one, he knew someone like you couldn't thrive in a place like that.

"You won't be going back, love. I know you've got friends there but that place isn't good for my angel it's too stressful." He said, to his surprise you nodded.

"Good, I don't want to go back. I don't have many friends and it's really difficult to go everyday." You cried out as Marc rocked you back and forth softly.

"Oh, my sweet girl. You don't need to cry, daddy won't ever let you go back there. You'll stay here, daddy will give you everything you need. Does that sound good, baby?" Marc asked as you nodded and nuzzled into him.

"It sounds perfect."
