David laughed, setting down the letter. Who was this boy? Who was so talented, both with paint and pen?

And why would he think he was old? Yes, he was tall, just over six feet, but was this a joke? An orphan thing?

David ran a hand over his dark hair. No balding yet, probably not for a decade or two. Was he getting wrinkles? Had this Mr. Kelly spied on the appointment? Obviously not, because then he would know David wasn’t old. He wasn’t! He was barely 23! Or was he? He would have to telephone Sarah later.

He groaned. He was hoping the would be an easy transition. Girls were easier. Girls were just thankful, they didn’t ask questions. Boys were so nosy.

But this boy was talented. His writing was engaging, and David was already fighting the urge to put pen to paper and break his own rule.
