Current ideas for that hades dnd thing I was going to work on
Build for zagreus would probably be Aasimar (half god half human) warlock. (Since they’re a patron centric class with both casting and fighting) and I want to go with Undying as the subclass because level 6 gives you defy death and…well I don’t have to explain that if you’ve played and got beat to shit without your death defiances. The pact would have to be pact of the blade since a lot of the aspects can be flavoured depending on your boons. I’m on the fence but I think maybe a few levels in Paladin might also be fun, but only for smite and channel divinity reasons. Same with rogue, zagreus really fits the rogue archetype but it’s not really a combat class and sneaking isn’t much of a thing in game.
Of course there’ll be statblocks for the bosses etc. The trinkets given would be magic items ofc.
I think flavouring effects, like doom and hangover or freeze are fairly easy as dnd has mechanics that allow you to deal damage on previously activated spells and speed is simple enough. Critical effects are still critical effects. Deflect will be similar to missile catching where you can fling em back. Charm is still charm. Hermes’ stuff is fun too bc it’s extra speed and evasion (see previously: rogue)
Companions work well as summon celestial methinks. Or fiends, depending on. The erinyes are a thing in dnd too so if it’s Meg it’ll just be the erinyes statblock.
HP and obols are straight forward, for both the shop and blood sacrifice parts (with chaos). For buffs to weapons with Daedelus it’ll be magic weapon buffs like +1 and added effects.
And it makes sense for the in between of each biome to be a short rest since you heal from the fountain.
One more meta mechanic would be to choose the rooms and foes based on random encounters or d20 mechanic rolls. Ofc that’s just simplifying the RNG at that point.
Anyway that’s my thoughts. Share yours as well if you want I’ve just had this floating in my head for months.

‘Life itself is the most wonderful fairytale of all.’
Tumblr media
If you missed my announcement post last week, you may not know that I am a co-host of a wonderful readathon that will be taking place from 11th-18th August. My co-hosts are BookTubers Sam, Becky, Erica and Jordan and I would love if you could subscribe to all four of their channels. They are all fantastic creators and their videos deserve a LOT of love!
Today’s post aims to give you some inspiration for your FairytaleAThon TBR. The challenges for this round are in the above image and I’ve selected a few books that fit each one, which you’ll hopefully be interested in. FairytaleAThon encompasses original fairytales, myths, folktales and retellings of them so the possibilties are almost endless! Here are my very best recommendations:
Tumblr media
1. THUMBELINA: Read a fairytale or retelling under 250 pages.
ELLA ENCHANTED BY GAIL CARSON LEVINE: 240 pages.
This very funny and sweet retelling of Cinderella is perhaps better known as a cute Anne Hathaway film but the source material is definitely worth the read. It follows Ella, who was given the curse of obedience by a fairy, when she was a baby. This means that she has to do anything that anyone tells her -fight monsters, let down her friends and even deny that she’s in love with the prince. However, there is a beautiful feminist resolution that is sure to delight modern fairytale lovers!
THE SNOW QUEEN BY HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN: 96 pages.
The story that inspired Frozen is over 200 years old but this beautiful new edition from independent publishing house Pushkin is worth picking up for the coverlust alone! The original tale is quite different to Disney’s version but it is still an epic story of love and loyalty in the harsh landscape of the snowy North. When a magic mirror breaks and curses Kay to be blind to all of the good in the world, he is taken by the Snow Queen and locked in her ice palace. It’s up to his friend Gerda to trek across the icy plains and rescue him and his frozen heart.
THE BROKEN SWORD BY POUL ANDERSON: 237 pages.
Inspired by Norse mythology, The Broken Sword is a dark high fantasy that has somehow been packed into just over 200 pages. Skafloc is a human boy who has been raised by elves amidst their war with the trolls. The elves require the use of the sword Tyrfing, which the mighty Thor broke in order to stop it destroying Yggdrasil -the tree that brings the earth, heavens and underworld together. Only the giant Bolverk can fix it and it’s Skafloc’s job to persuade him. As well as this huge undertaking, Skafloc also needs to face his dark changeling self! This is ideal for Tolkien fans who need a quick whimsical adventure in a strange land.
THE WILD SWANS BY HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN: 64 pages.
I’m aware that this is the second Christian Andersen Pushkin edition in this post but LOOK AT THEM! The Wild Swans is a little-known story about a princess whose 11 brothers are turned into swans by their evil stepmother. Despite being determined to break the curse, the stakes are high and huge sacrifices will need to be made to reunite the siblings. It’s a heartbreaking story about familial love and loyalty.
Tumblr media
2. GENTLE GIANTS: Read a fairytale or retelling over 500 pages.
CRESS BY MARISSA MEYER: 560 pages.
This sci-fi retelling of Rapunzel is actually the third book in the Lunar Chronicles series. Although each book is a retelling of a different fairytale, the characters do overlap and therefore it is best to read them in order. The good news is that you have plenty of time before the readathon to read both preceding books -Cinder and Scarlet. The series is incredibly unique, quirky and funny with some truly shipworthy romances and madcap adventure.
COMPLETE FAIRY TALES BY BROTHERS GRIMM: 1019 pages.
Ok, so this may be cheating a little BUT what would FairytaleAThon be, if you didn’t dip into some classic original stories at some point? This Penguin Vintage Classics edition of the tales collected by the Brothers Grimm is a simple yet beautiful chunk of a book that I believe should be a staple in any fairytale lover’s library. Featuring the original gruesome versions of classics such as Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Twelve Dancing Princesses and so many more, there is bound to be more than a few of these 279 twisted, disturbing stories that you love!
CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE BY TOMI ADEYEMI: 544 pages.
It was one of the biggest books of last year and its sequel is on its way next year. Children of Blood and Bone is inspired by the Orisha (deities) of West African mythology. It follows Zelie, a young girl with magical powers in a world where magic has been taken away and people like her are hunted by a tyrannical king. However now she is on a quest to avenge her dead mother and restore magic to her homeland. Followed by her brother Tzain, a rogue princess Amari and enemy prince Inan, this is a truly unique YA fantasy that I found completely unputdownable.
WICKED BY GREGORY MAGUIRE: 512 pages.
This prequel to The Wizard of Oz is best known as a hit West End and Broadway musical but the source material is also a fantastic read. Elphaba has been an outcast and persecuted all her life because of her green skin and this doesn’t change when she starts at Shiz University, where she meets the beautiful, queen bee Galinda. After a reluctant start, they soon form a friendship and band together with Munchkin boy Boq and quiet Vinkus prince Fiyero to put the injustices of their world to rights. Spanning over years of Elphaba’s life, Wicked features forbidden love, high-stake drama and challenges your idea of what evil really is.
Tumblr media
3. IF THE SHOE FITS: Read any fairytale or retelling on your TBR.
Of course you should use your own TBR for this challenge but I’ve chosen some popular releases over the last couple of years that just might be on your TBR anyway.
CIRCE BY MADELINE MILLER
Not only is it a beautiful book but the story inside is truly captivating, bewitching and heartbreaking. This is a feminist retelling of the Greek myth of Circe, the sorceress living alone on the island of Aiaia with a talent for potion-making and a penchant for turning sailors into animals. In this version, Circe is banished to Aiaia by Zeus when he feels threatened by her unique brand of magic. There she develops her craft, tames the animals, grows herbs and even encounters travellers such as Daedelus, Icarus and Odysseus. After angering both mortals and gods, she needs to decide where she truly belongs to protect the thing she loves most. Madeline Miller is a gorgeous writer and Circe is a masterpiece.
THE HAZEL WOOD BY MELISSA ALBERT
Although not a fairytale or a retelling, The Hazel Wood has many fairytale elements and therefore, I feel it more than qualifies for FairytaleAThon. It follows 17-year-old Alice who has spent most of her life moving around with her mother because bad luck and disaster seems to follow them around. Alice’s grandmother is the author of a book of dark fairytales set in mysterious Hinterland. When her grandmother dies and her mother goes missing, Alice has almost nothing to go on. She teams up with classmate Ellery Finch, who also happens to be a superfan of her grandmother’s stories, to find her mother and discover the secrets of her grandmother’s creation. It’s the perfect remedy if you’re craving some fast-paced, whimsical action. THE SILENCE OF THE GIRLS BY PAT BARKER
Ok so it’s ANOTHER Greek myth retelling but this is another book that should really be on your radar.  The Silence of the Girls tells the story of the women affected by the Trojan war, who have been largely ignored by the original myth. It focuses primarily on Briseis, a Trojan queen who became a concubine to Achilles after he murdered her husband and brothers. Her life in the Greek camp is a world away from the one she led in Troy and she is now a slave to the army. When commander Agamemnon wishes to claim Briseis as his own prize, she finds her fate entirely at the mercy of the two most powerful men of Greece as the war wages on. It’s an engaging accessible version of the story with some lovely female friendships, intricate and illicit romances and an ending that will definitely touch your heart.
GEEKERELLA BY ASHLEY POSTON
This quirky, nerdy YA romance is enormous fun to read! Vegan food-truck worker Elle is a superfan of hit sci-fi series Starfield, a love she shared with her late father. When a cosplay competition is announced to celebrate the upcoming movie reboot, Elle has to enter. The prize is a ticket to the Cosplay Ball at the fandom’s convention ExcelsionCon and a meet and greet with the new Prince Carmindor. However, when it’s announced that the role will be played by teen idol Darien Freeman (who her stepsisters are obsessed with) Elle isn’t hopeful he’ll do the part justice because surely a pretty boy actor doesn’t know the first thing about Starfield, right? Told through the viewpoints of both Elle and Darien via alternating chapters, it’s full of dramatic irony and the subtle similarities to the story of Cinderella are so fun to pick out. Our group book for this round is its recently released companion The Princess and the Fangirl, so what better reason to pick up Geekerella if you haven’t already?
Tumblr media
4. CREATURES OF THE DEEP: Read a book with mermaids, sirens or sea monsters.
As this is a summer round of FairytaleAThon, my co-hosts and I decided that we wanted to dedicate a challenge to stories that feature cool blue waters. We agreed that this book doesn’t have to be a fairytale, folktale or retelling; it just has to feature a mythical aquatic creature.
TO KILL A KINGDOM BY ALEXANDRA CHRISTO
This dark retelling of The Little Mermaid sees Princess Lira as a ruthless collector of princes’ hearts. However, when she kills a fellow siren, the Sea Queen punishes her by turning her into a human and taking away her singing voice. She needs to bring back the heart of Prince Elian in order to return to the sea. Prince Elian is himself a siren-hunter and when he rescues a drowning Lira, she promises to help him destroy all sirens but of course, she has her own motives for getting close to him. Although I’ve seen mixed reviews for this book, I really enjoyed it for the concept. Lira is a much more powerful, more formidable figure than Ariel and the story is much more brutal. I’d definitely recommend it for anyone who feels like Ariel deserved more.
THE PISCES BY MELISSA BRODER
The Pisces is an incredibly strange novel about Lucy who has recently split from her long-term partner and is lacking inspiration for her thesis. In the hopes that it will help her forget her problems, she agrees to spend the summer in LA, looking after her sister’s house and foxhound. While there, she goes on a string of grisly Tinder dates, attends a therapy group for love addiction and falls in love with a mysterious but gorgeous surfer dude… who appears to have scales over the entirety of his lower body… It’s funny, it’s weird, it’s sad in parts but it’s also somehow bloody brilliant. Be warned that there are some pretty graphic sex scenes, so perhaps avoid it if you’re sensitive to that!
THE GLOAMING BY KIRSTY LOGAN
This is a wonderfully charming magical realism book following Mara and her family, whose island is surrounded with magic and stories. When tragedy strikes her family, Mara finds solace in enigmatic Pearl who introduces her to a new way of life and possibilities she never dreamed of. Torn between the traditions of her island and the ever-changing course of the sea while still haunted by the past, Mara needs to decide which is the best path for her to take. Kirsty Logan is a lyrical genius so if you like beautiful imagery and strange diverse storylines, The Gloaming is a great choice for you.
THE MERMAID AND MRS HANCOCK BY IMOGEN HERMES GOWAR
Set in the 18th century, The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock is a beautifully written and surreal read that will appeal if you’re looking for a more literary, social history-led mermaid book. Merchant Jonah Hancock learns that one of his captains has sold his ship for what is apparently a mermaid. Naturally this piques the curiosity of the area and he is soon thrown into upper class circles, where he meets the beautiful, accomplished Angelica Neal. Soon enough, both of their lives take a new course at a high price. It’s a pretty big book so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it if youre not already a historical fiction reader but it’s definitely a unique story of obsession and intrigue with bags of wit.
Tumblr media
5. TRY THE GREY STUFF: Read with a yummy treat.
Naturally, your choice of reading snack is ENTIRELY your choice but these are four of my favourites to get your tummy rumbling!
ICE CREAM
The perfect treat for a hot day. Just don’t let it drip onto the pages!
COOKIES
Is there anything more tasty than a plate of warm, gooey, freshly baked cookies? Pretty sure there isn’t!
POPCORN
If your book is painting beautiful cinematic images in your mind or the drama is getting a little tense, you might want to grab some popcorn to add to the experience. MOZZARELLA STICKS
Possibly my favourite savoury snack ever. A few mozzarella sticks dipped in sweet chilli sauce is simply delicious!
Tumblr media
6. A WHOLE NEW WORLD: Read a fairytale or retelling with a diverse character.
ASH BY MALINDA LO
This bisexual retelling of Cinderella is one of my favourites ever. Ash dreams of being taken away from her miserable life with her stepmother by fairies so when she meets handsome but dark fairy Sidhean, she thinks her life is about to change. Then she meets beautiful huntress Kasia and begins feeling things she hasn’t felt in a long time. But how can she choose between true love and her fairytale escape? It’s sexy, enchanting, incredibly intense and I absolutely devoured it.
A CURSE SO DARK AND LONELY BY BRIGID KEMMERER
This was our group book for the last round of FairytaleAThon, so if you joined us then, there is a good chance you’ll have already read A Curse So Dark And Lonely. It’s a recently released Beauty and the Beast retelling which has been getting a lot of hype in the book community. It follows Harper, a teenage girl living in Washington DC with her ailing mother and dismissive older brother. When she intervenes in a street incident, she finds herself being pulled into Emberfall, a broken kingdom ruled by Prince Rhen, who has been cursed to relive his 18th year until a girl falls for the vicious beast he has become. With evil forces at work, Harper and Rhen need to defeat more than a curse to save the people of Emberfall. Harper has cerebral palsy and as a result, she has developed a strength and feistiness that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in YA fantasy. It’s a must read for anyone who loves cursed hearts, easy-to-root-for characters and page-turning tension.
EVERY HEART A DOORWAY BY SEANAN MAGUIRE
The first in the Wayward Children series of novellas, Every Heart A Doorway is the perfect twisted fairytale. The premise explores what happens to the children who have been to magical lands on their return to the real world. Ever-changed by their experiences, they are often take to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children, where everyone is seeking a door to the fantasy world they’ve left. When Nancy arrives, darkness and tragedy are just around the corner. There are asexual and transgender characters, multiple ethnicities represented as well as plenty of dark whimsical adventure. It’s certainly a strange little series but once you start it, you’ll be hooked.
THE WRATH AND THE DAWN BY RENEE AHDIEH
A retelling of an Arabian Nights story, The Wrath and the Dawn tells the story of the young king Khalid who murders a new wife every night. When her best friend becomes one of the slain, Shahrzad volunteers to be his next bride with every intention of not being the one who ends up dead. Through the power of storytelling, she survives night after night and inexplicably finds herself falling in love with Khalid, who appears to be nothing more than a tortured soul -much like the rest of his palace which seems to have more than a few secrets. It’s a novel full of tradition, elegance and fantastic world-building. You’ll definitely get swept up in this one!
Tumblr media
7. RAGS TO RICHES: Read the group book.
THE PRINCESS AND THE FANGIRL BY ASHLEY POSTON
Our group book this round is The Princess and the Fangirl and I can’t wait to dive into it! It’s set in the same fandom as Geekerella but is not a direct sequel, so you can technically read it if you haven’t read the previous book. It follows fangirl Imogen who is on a mission to save her favourite Starfield characters Princess Amara from being killed off. However Jessica, the actress who plays her, is desperate to shake off the pressure and intensity from the fandom and would actually quite like to bow out of the series. I don’t want to know too much more about it but I know it involves an F/F romance and I’m guessing there’s a case of switching places or mistaken identities at some point, given that it has been touted as a retelling of The Prince and the Pauper. I am INCREDIBLY excited for this one and I hope you’ll be picking it up too!
Hopefully I’ve given you some ideas for your own TBR. I’ll be posting my own next week, so look out for that. This round looks like a good one!

All of the posts for Dragon Age 4/Retribution!
GENERAL DETAILS: (ALL VERBATIM FROM 4CHAN SITE)  >Game takes place primarily in Tevinter but we'll have missions in the Anderfels, Seheron, Antiva, Deep Roads, and the Fade, etc.. >60% of the game world is represented by the capital city of Minrathous which is 200 times bigger than Denerim in DAO. >Minrathous will be a open and living city with moving npcs that walk around, buy goods, do busy work,, think of how npc's acted within Novigrad in the Witcher 3. >The city will have large temples, statues, large buildings and towers, markets, docks, fountains, giant walls which you can explore and other cool areas like a coliseum and even an aqueduct which you can climb. >If you hadn't noticed yet Minrathous will be heavily based on imperial Rome and Constantinople and in lore is the largest city in thedas with nearly 1 million inhabitants.  >The city is divided into 5 zones/districts with no loading screens to get into each one so it's all integral. >The districts include, the noble district which is in the upper/Northmost part of the city set on a hill which will have three different staircases that can get you in and out of the district. >Within that district you have a smaller district encased in marble walls and only accessed by gate called the Imperial quarter which houses the Imperial Senate house, the Grand Library of Tevinter (lorewise its equivalent to the library of Alexandria and is nearly impossible to get into - there will be a quest dedicated just to that place), Archon's Palace, the grand temple of Dumat and senatorial mansions. >The lower half of the city includes includes the market district, the "plebeian/worker class district", the coliseum district which also includes an academy of magic, the library of minrathous, imperial army headquarters and finally the poor district. >The streets of Minrathous are all cobbled, the outside walls are large guarded by just as large juggernaut statues which are massive black golems. >The city has three bridges that connect it to the outside world which you can also explore before being told to turn around. >The other 40% of the game world will be large maps and dungeons similar to the zones in DA:I. >One specific zone will be a swamp marsh area where you'll get one companion and a tied story mission. PLAYER CHARACTER: >Your character can only be human for story reasons, that means you won't be able to play as a elf, dwarf, qunari etc... >Can play as male or female. >There's a CC filter on being homosexual, heterosexual or bi and influence some dialogue line as well as romance options. >Your character' last name is Lanius and will be referred to as such by all the NPCs and text. >DAR will be more story and character focused than DAI, you have a mother and father and a dead male/female that's interchangeable based on your sex ie if you're male you'll have a dead sister and vice versa . >Your dead sibling is dead before game and will be involved in a form of a quest with your own mother. >Vastly improved CC system, you can literally make a young Liam Neeson type character if you wish, it's that good and it's the best CC system ever made. >You'll have 7 companions, 4 males and 3 females. >Of those 7, one will be a dwarf, another an elf, and there'll be a qunari companion. >If you take any of these characters on mission with you within Minrathous prepare to have racist encounters and with the Qunari a literal bloodbath. >The main female romance option of males is named Eva Scala and her father is senator Daedelus Scala leader of Populares faction of the imperial senate. >Your father is a minor noble of the equestrian rank and is leader of the knightly class of Tevinter, he is in constant conflict with the patricians/senators especially Scala. >The rest of the companions I'll mention in the story bits. GAMEPLAY: >Will be more like DA2 combat and will have a vastly improved tactics system similar to DAO. >Loads of build variety. >Blood magic returns and your story is affected if you use blood magic/become a blood Mage. >NPCS and companions will mention that a lot if you actually choose the blood Mage path. >The canon is to play a Mage but you can still play as a warrior or rogue. >The rogue is actually super fun to play as, you'll actually be a stealth assassin type figure if you spec into it. >Warriors are just warriors, still cool. >Items system is the exact same as DA:I. >RNG is more forgivable in DAR than DAI however the higher difficulty the less luck with RNG. >Can craft weapons and armour. >Can tint, color and modify your armour. >Weapons are less final fantasy looking. >Five different difficulties, easy, normal, hard, very hard, nightmare. >No new game plus. >Can customize companions. >You have a den in Minrathous similar to the assassin's den in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. >You and Daedalus Scala lead this secret society known as the Old Order whose fundamental goal is to bring back the last two untainted old dragon gods to fight against a "greater evil". >You recruit people similar to how you recruited individuals in DAI and send them on missions of assassinations, political intrigue, resource gathering etc...pretty much similar to DA:I. >You get rewards for mission completion including exp, crafting resources, rare weapons and items, and Old Order points used to unlock perks in the Perk system. >The Old Order is integral to the story line but recruiting people and sending them off to missions is entirely optional. >Attribute system returns and is pretty much nearly identical to DAO. >Game is set in 9:51 Dragon. >the Qunari have invaded Tevinter in six different invasion points. >They've already conquered the northern half of tevinter except for Minrathous which is guarded by its powerful walls on land and by the Imperial Navy at sea. >You're apart of a southern tevinter relief force. >Game starts off with massive cinematic battle. >You pick your gender, do your CC, pick your class. >You're apart of a 4 man specialist commando force including yourself, Eva Scala which the commander, one warrior named Constantius, and a rogue named Justin (both of whom die at the end of the level). >The first area of the game is the army camp area. >Get assigned the mission by the general/commander Mage literally name Maximus Decimus (there's there's loads of name references to everything Rome and Roman including movies/TV shows) and dropped off immediately behind enemy lines. >Your goal is too pretty much disable the Qunari warmachines (cannons) and destroy their supply train. >There's numerous cutscenes of a large grayish wolf stalking you. >Kill trash mobs of Qunari and Dalish elves in alliance with them. >Final battle of the level is with a powerful Saraabas. >Get confronted after the grayish wolf finally appears and transform to a giant 10 foot tall armored figure. >Pretty much destroys everything and sets giant balls of Fire on to the clashing armies. >There'll be a warden civil war that you'll have to resolve. >Assassination attempt on the Archon. >Salos burning and killing tevinter cities and both Qunari/Tevinter armies. >Second final level will be Solas essentially trying to destroy Minrathous just after you beat off a Qunari siege. >Final level is traveling to the forest of arlathan to kill Salos/Solas. >Ending choice is to kill, capture or save Solas. >Solas is the main villain in game. >Dorian cameo. >Inquisition and Grey Warden both mentioned. >Hawke/Stroud are in the Anderfell level.

Circe
Circe by Madeline Miller
Tumblr media
Fictionalized retelling of the Greek goddess Circe’s life -- kind of like historical fiction for Greek mythology.
Here’s the spoiler-free premise: Circe is the daughter of Helios, the sun god, and Perse, a nymph. She is the least favorite of Helios’ many children and is constantly badgered by her siblings, especially Perses and Pasiphaë. Only her younger brother Aeëtes is kind to her. Throughout her immortal life she encounters various characters from Greek mythology including Prometheus, Daedelus, Hermes, Odysseus, Penelope, Athena, and Scylla. Upon being discovered as a witch and threatening her father, Circe is exiled to Aiaia. Her only reprieve comes when she is requested at Pasiphaë’s birthing of the Minotaur. Circe also enjoys a few love interests throughout and eventually bears a son whom she works hard to protect from Athena for years. Ultimately, though, Circe, of whom Odysseus said “that he had never met a god who enjoyed their divinity less,” must come to terms with her immortal life and accept it or do something about it. She is a witch, after all.
So, let me start by saying that I was really excited to read this book and I did like it overall, but mostly because I enjoy Greek mythology. However, it was slow to start and it dragged in some places. There were some moments where I thought, “ooh, this is really picking up!” But for most of it, I wouldn’t call it a page turner. Also, for me, it was a little hard to follow at times. I think that I just don’t really enjoy this style of writing in general, though I do think it was appropriate for the type of book this is.
I don’t think this novel needed any more character development since it’s based on Greek mythology. I know that this is basically Circe’s life story, but it felt plotless, even though overall it wasn’t. It had enough drama though; how could any story involving immortals, jealous raging gods, and love between mortals & deities not? (I want to make it known that my favorite part of the whole story is when Circe says to Helios, “I will do as I please, and when you count your children, leave me out.”)
I loved Circe’s relationship with Aeëtes. That is, until -- well I won’t spoil it for you, but just know it broke my heart. And I could definitely have used more of Prometheus. Heck, I might be a little in love with him myself! Mini-spoiler: much of Circe’s “adult” life is spent with Odysseus, which is fine, but I really would’ve liked to have read more about her time with Telemachus. (I must confess, though, I have mixed feelings about that.)
Which leads me to the ending. Again, it’s Circe’s life story, and considering she’s immortal, it could’ve gone on forever -- and for a while, I was scared it would -- but considering everything we’d read about her up to the end, it was a very abrupt ending. Don’t get me wrong, I knew it had to end some time but it didn’t have enough...denouement for me. (And it was a little short on climax, too.) I guess I felt like I’d read about so much of her time on Aiaia but I really wanted to know more about (mini-spoiler) her time once she gets off the island.
I can’t call this an absolute favorite but I see why people like this book; I really do. There’s so much to be said about being your own person, living your life and the choices you make, how women are viewed and treated vs. men. (Not to mention analyzing all of the characters individually.) Now, if you are a person who is very, shall I say “attached” to Greek mythology, I might not recommend this book since it does take a few liberties with story lines...from what I know. Otherwise, set aside some time (because it’s long) and go ahead and [probably] enjoy!

100 Characters from Classical Mythology: http://bit.ly/2yV02CF - Free delivery worldwide
Dating back roughly 3,000 years, the gods of the ancient Greeks―and later, of the Romans―have figured prominently in legendry, poetry, drama, and the visual arts. But today’s readers are often confused when they encounter the myriad names of those deities and try to understand their roles in mythology. This entertaining and mind-expanding book charts 100 of the most prominent characters from Greco-Roman mythology, including the primordial deities, the great gods of Olympus, and the shadowy inhabitants of Hades. Addressing universal themes such as love, jealousy, anger, ambition, deceit, and beauty, the stories told here make fascinating reading while they add significance to countless classical references in our civilization’s literature and art. Author Malcolm Day profiles each god with a short, very readable summary of that personage’s acts. He sets each deity’s story within the larger context of a “family tree” that encompasses all major gods. Full-color illustrations showing memorable scenes from classical mythology include reproductions from famous paintings and photos of statuary. Separate chapters are devoted to:
- The Primordial Gods: Gaia, Uranus, Cronus, and others
- The Gods of Olympus: Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, and others
- Descendants of the Titans: Iris, Nike, Helios, Eos, Atlas, and others
- Legendary Heroes: Jason, Oedipus, Daedelus, Paris, Helen of Troy, and others
- Figures from the Odyssey: Odysseus, Penelope, Circe, and others
This virtual roadmap through the complexities of classical mythology features more than 100 full-color illustrations.

okay, so i've mostly set on core setups for my team. which leaves the following topics to think about:
- remaining core setup questions - weapons - frames
i've got a provisional sense of what weapon loadouts the three will be using. but i can't really think about the question or truly answer it till i've gotten a real sense for the different feels of the various melee weapons. so i can't answer that one yet.
there are remaining core questions, but they're mostly a question of nuanced refinements with the occasional swapping out for spec attribute defense as neccesary. the one big thing that could upend that is if i find out that i haven't given my bots enough battery life. since i've only got one battery for three motors. albeit a pretty large battery and with ultra efficient motors which i sacrificed a bit of space to bulk and a dot less attack function charge rate for.
two of them are using the rectangle battery while amy's is using a daedelus. and considering that extensive field testing found a strider frame in a 1 v 1 battle that even 500 bp was tight but sufficient. i think i should be okay. since strider frames and 1 v 1's are the most slowing/battery demanding things that i can forsee. so i'm not too worried about that upending my core builds.
so the big question is frames.
amy is really simple since she's pigeonholed to strider frames. you use the amazon for slashing defense, ruby queen with amazon's legs for piercing defense and (a very poor) impact defense. then when enemies start using non-kinetic weapons, you start using the kunichi and percival as neccesary.
kaz is more complicated since he's also pigeonholed, but only to weapon rather than frame. while van having no pigeonholing is the most expansive and confusing to figure out.
now with Kaz, your first decision is what kind of trade-off you want to make between speed and durability. with the theory for speed being it makes startegic positioning more accessible and allows you to maintain optimal distances for sniping more readily (sniping does more damage the further away you are/of course safety concerns when you're firing with a scoped weapon). while armor lets you keep sniping calmly even while enemies are targetting you with ranged fire.
Kaz's default is but for one _hugggeeee_ oversight, a great all-around choice. fast enough to be pretty manuverable to get to optimal positions and get away from enemies readily, especially if you swap to a melee secondary to defend yourself while retreating since it goes up a speed grade at that weapon weight. durable enough that it can take a reasonable amount of fire. and _especially_ that nice nice stinger missle attack function.
but alas, horrifyingly, the hunter frame is devastatingly weak to piercing attacks. which considering that your biggest threat is ranged kinetic fire... makes that a mighty big problem. so it's great if you don't die, but you very well could. especially if the opposing team has snipers too (as you found out the hard way in the random encounters in chapter 3 lol).
so yeah, your choices are E speed, C speed, or B speed. towards b speed, some interesting branching specialty options are using ruby queen's hover pack so you can readily hover-fly to strategic positions/jump up high cliffs easily, or strider so that you can swap to a secondary lighter weapon and get A speed while positioning yourself (though considering the length of time switching your weapons back and forth takes, that's probably not worth it i think)
i think arguably something heavier duty and slower is more valuable for team battles, especially 3 v 3, while speed is more important for 1 v 1's and to a somewhat lesser extent 2 v 2's. since generally two melee teammates do a good job of keeping the enemies far away from you while you snipe them to pieces, but with concentrated enemy ranged fire being your big threat. while in 1 v 1, enemy ranged fire is far less threathening unless they're a sniper too since you can wayyy out-match them in a dps trading game at a distance. but you're constantly forced to run away and re-position to keep your sniper rifle an effective weapon when opponents close with you.
to be honest, i'm pretty fed up with playing as a sniper in 1 v 1 since it's a pretty frustrating dynamic. so i'll keep a B armor lying around for contingencies, but i'll focus on team fight scenarios.
in which case it's either a choice of C or E (there's an interesting side option of if you can equip ruby queen's legs and get the hover function, which could net you a lot of the manuverability without having to sacrifice armor. though i doubt that. it's probably you need to equip the whole set.
but what armor class is the full ruby queen frame? also, it's worth noting it has excellent defense against penetrating attacks...
definitely worth taking a look at as a possibility. that e class treaded mech is also
...
bed time. to continue in a re-blog later.
