Three Durham police officers committed professional misconduct when they showed "pro-police bias," conducting an inadequate investigation of the incident that led to the conviction of an off-duty Toronto constable for assaulting Dafonte Miller in 2016, according to a disciplinary tribunal ruling.
Citing the serious injuries sustained by then-19-year-old Miller, retired Ontario Provincial Police Supt. Greg Walton, who oversaw the disciplinary proceedings, said in a ruling dated June 26 that the officers ignored clear signs that a thorough investigation was warranted.
"The inequity in injuries and one-sided result of the altercation alone begged for questions to be asked," Walton said.
"I am convinced that the main reason those inquiries did not occur is because of the involvement and role of an off-duty officer." [...]

The Skin We’re In
by Desmond Cole
NATIONAL BESTSELLER
WINNER OF THE 2020 TORONTO BOOK AWARD
A bracing, provocative, and perspective-shifting book from one of Canada’s most celebrated and uncompromising writers, Desmond Cole. The Skin We’re In will spark a national conversation, influence policy, and inspire activists.
In his 2015 cover story for Toronto Life magazine, Desmond Cole exposed the racist actions of the Toronto police force, detailing the dozens of times he had been stopped and interrogated under the controversial practice of carding. The story quickly came to national prominence, shaking the country to its core and catapulting its author into the public sphere. Cole used his newfound profile to draw insistent, unyielding attention to the injustices faced by Black Canadians on a daily basis.
Both Cole’s activism and journalism find vibrant expression in his first book, The Skin We’re In. Puncturing the bubble of Canadian smugness and naive assumptions of a post-racial nation, Cole chronicles just one year—2017—in the struggle against racism in this country. It was a year that saw calls for tighter borders when Black refugees braved frigid temperatures to cross into Manitoba from the States, Indigenous land and water protectors resisting the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, police across the country rallying around an officer accused of murder, and more.
The year also witnessed the profound personal and professional ramifications of Desmond Cole’s unwavering determination to combat injustice. In April, Cole disrupted a Toronto police board meeting by calling for the destruction of all data collected through carding. Following the protest, Cole, a columnist with the Toronto Star, was summoned to a meeting with the paper’s opinions editor and informed that his activism violated company policy. Rather than limit his efforts defending Black lives, Cole chose to sever his relationship with the publication. Then in July, at another police board meeting, Cole challenged the board to respond to accusations of a police cover-up in the brutal beating of Dafonte Miller by an off-duty police officer and his brother. When Cole refused to leave the meeting until the question was publicly addressed, he was arrested. The image of Cole walking out of the meeting, handcuffed and flanked by officers, fortified the distrust between the city’s Black community and its police force.
Month-by-month, Cole creates a comprehensive picture of entrenched, systemic inequality. Urgent, controversial, and unsparingly honest, The Skin We’re In is destined to become a vital text for anti-racist and social justice movements in Canada, as well as a potent antidote to the all-too-present complacency of many white Canadians.

You were face to face with far right extremists? Jesus. I am sorry you had to go through that. On the allcanadianpolitics blog apparently there are sundown towns here too like on Lovecraft Country the hbo show. I think there was a teacher killed in Canada, who the KKK didn’t like that he taught black people and paid similar wages. I am sorry you had to face the soldiers of odin, by protests do you mean the convoy protests? There were lots of harrassment of people of colour and queer people going on then. Yeah there have been a rise in hate crimes of all sorts of groups during the last decade in Canada. Not that there hasn’t always been hate crimes but they seem really intense since 2015 and during the pandemic
oh, the posts about sundown towns were actually mine! I just haven't been able to update my list of them recently. speaking of, I'm going to try to do that today
anyway, I came face to face with neo-nazis and far-right groups plenty of times. there were the protests about the beating of dafonte miller, the protests against jordan peterson, the anti-trump protests, and probably more

Toronto Police Service Board vs Desmond Cole feat. Phil Morgan, Brian De Matos and Gita Madan
Tumblr media
Along with Phil Morgan, Brian De Matos and Gita Madan, Toronto activist Desmond Cole spoke on the item of suspending the Student Resource Officer program.
Tumblr media
The auditorium space was filled by 1 p.m., and by 1:05 the hallway outside of the auditorium was crowded with supporters for Dafonte Miller and Desmond Cole. Many people in the crowd held “We’re here for Dafonte”. Throughout the meeting, spectators demanded members of the board resign for their handling of the Dafonte Miller cover up and their disregard for people’s concerns. Every word spoke by the board was met by a heckle from the crowd, demonstrating their frustration.
Tumblr media
The TPS board kept reflecting words of ‘45′ when regarding the review and possible suspension of the School Resource Officer program because it targets racialized students.

An off-duty Toronto cop convicted in the beating of a young Black man in Whitby in 2016 has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Earlier this year, Const. Michael Theriault was found guilty of assault in connection with a December 2016 attack on Dafonte Miller, then 19.
In his decision released Thursday, Ontario Superior Court Justice Joseph Di Luca referred to the assault on Miller as an act of "gratuitous violence on a person who was vulnerable."
"Mr. Miller was badly injured, his eyeball was ruptured, and he was bleeding profusely," the judge said.
"It would have been obvious that Mr. Miller was injured and bleeding... it would have been obvious he was in retreat, seeking help."
He noted that the sentence "reflects the seriousness of the offence " and Theriault's "degree of moral responsibility" as a trained officer who is sworn to protect the community.
"These are offences that shatter a community's trust in the system,” Di Luca said. “This type of offence requires a heightened degree of denunciation.”

Crown seeks jail time for off-duty Toronto cop convicted in beating of Dafonte Miller

TORONTO — Dafonte Miller said he feared for his life on the night he was assaulted in Whitby by an off-duty Toronto cop, who repeatedly struck him in the head and body with a metal pipe, a court heard Friday.
“As I stood banging on the door of the home at 113 Erickson Drive, blood dripping from my face, pleading for help, I thought that Michael Theriault was going to kill me with a steel…

I got involved in protests in 2016 in the wake of the beating of Dafonte Miller by a white cop
which is why it's so fucking annoying to me that white folks are acting like George Floyd's death started the black lives matter movement, or started the fight against police brutality
and I'm not claiming it started in 2016 either- that's just when I personally got involved
this isn't new! you all just ignored it until now.
black lives matter was founded in 2013. police brutality has existed for as long as police have.
just cause you buried your head in the sand doesn't mean nothing was happening around you

Inclusion of racial awareness issues in Canadian organizations like MADD Canada
Whilst one the most hoot topics in todays society right now is the racial climate in the USA as well as Canada. I feel it is key to note the lack of inclusion of racial awareness issues in organizations like MADD Canada. During a MADD Canada presentation the topics of reporting or calling the police when for protection or when in times of need came up. As a black person that topic of conversation became a very tense one for  me as I have been racially carded and profiled by police before as well as some other classmates.
It quickly became a discussion between me, my classmates out teacher and the presenter as to what choice would be appropriate as well as recognizing the longstanding distasteful relationship between the black community and the police.
According to the OHRC and Amnesty international black people are more 20x more likely to be shot by police. These statistics whilst damning aren't surprising given the rampant anti-black racism amongst police forces like the Toronto PD. The case of Dafonte Miller was fresh reminder for the Canadian public that police brutality against black and brown bodies is just as a problem here in Canada as it is in America.
Which is why I feel reaching out to organizations like MADD Canada who clearly haven’t had any inclusion of this issue in their yearly school presentations is necessary. This could be an opportunity to help others and have an open discussion on this topic. Not making black students feel alienated with this conversation

I don't know why social media timelines are going back to 'normal' . Racism, police brutality and the systematic oppression of black people, etc-- are still going on and haven't stopped. It isn't over. Continue to educate yourselves and use your platforms to spread awareness and information!

Canada is way too comfortable with their racism n im really tired of it. The prime minister of Ontario said that Canada doesn’t have “the same systemic, deep roots” racism as the United States. So we’re just going to ignore the fact that your entire government is meant to limit, one could even say suppress, the existence of the Indigenous peoples. We’re gonna forget about the residential schools and the after-affect that it still has in their community? So police brutality is not a thing in Canada? Andrew Loku? Dafonte Miller? Jermaine Carby? D’André Campbell? Greg Ritchie? Abdirahman Abdi? Regis Korchinski-Paquet?
