Stewart, who returns as the 2024 presidential election season heats up, will also executive produce the show and work with a rotating line-up of comedians who will helm the program the rest of the week, Tuesdays through Thursdays.
So, one day a week BUT he'll also be executive producer.
This is the best possible outcome since Trevor Noah left, at least until they find somebody comparable.
I've been missing Trevor Noah on the Daily Show (congrats on that Emmy!). I've enjoyed the rotating hosts, but it certainly adds some excitement to hear that Jon Stewart will be making a part-time return. Really interested to see how that goes, especially as this fraught election year ramps up.
So the Daily Show just had a segment about AI. Jon used the segment to mainly make the argument that this is bad for society because people will lose their jobs.
I love Jon but this is, unfortunately, a really bad argument.
Firstly, at its core, industries improve through "creative destruction". If we were still producing things the ways we did in the past, everything would be a lot more expensive. One easy way to tell? Compare the prices of artisan goods vs mass produced goods.
Put simply: It's good that industries get more efficient. That helps lower the costs of things. That's good for everyone.
So the problem isn't about AI taking jobs and doing the work. The problem is that we have a capitalistic society where not having a job basically means suffering and death because jobs are how one gets the means to acquire things in society.
The problem is capitalism, not technology.
Instead of wasting his time trying to fight the wave of technological progress, which just isn't going to stop and which I think is misplaced, I wish Jon had spent the second half of the segment talking about the need to start rethinking our economics. There's a LOT to get into there, especially in the context of a post-labor world, but at a minimum, he could've spoken about UBI and UBS (universal basic services) and the need to be careful against concentration of power and money.
AI can be a major boon for humanity. Let's stop fighting it and start working to ensure it works for everyone and not just the rich.
