Poster style illustration of a Daimajin vs Gamera crossover.
This match up has been on my Wishlist for a long time. I would love to see a film revolving around this matchup.
I combined some interpretations of Daimajin together for the design, but kept Gamera styled after the "Advent of Legion" design.
I'll be selling prints of this illustration and others at ACEN 2023, in Chicago IL this May.

Inktober 2023 Day 2- DAIMAJIN!
-One of the most best samurai-period kaiju films you may not have ever heard of! Daiei Film’s (the creators of Gamera), other mighty monster Daimajin, a giant living statue, possessed by an angry mountain deity,is awakened by an exiled princess, to save her brother and mentor, and to wreck destructive vengeance upon the tyrannical feudal lord who usurped their family and enslaved their land!

Thinking about the Daimajin trilogy again and an aspect I like about it is that each movie feels like a variant on the same story, which is the state a lot of folklore/legends/myhtology exist in. All are stories of powerful oppressive forces that commit horrible injustices until eventually daimajin's overwhelming wrath is unleashed upon them (the embodiment of fuck around and find out). The variation can be seen in not just plot specifics but also in how the Daimajin is portrayed
Daimajin- In this film, he's very much an entity of destruction. Imprisoned by the mountain God the people pray to and is unleashed in response to their prayers. However rampage has no true target, the oppressors just happen to be in his path and only when one of the characters offers her own life to stop it (having offered her life prior to the mountain God for help) is halted and collapses.
Return of Daimajin- A protective deity who rises to deliver punishment to those who've committed horrible injustices.
Daimajin Strikes Again- A more neutral entity, he isn't explicitly a protector or destroyer and is just the deity of the mountain. Sort of like a natural force that just exists that can be appealed to. He unleashes his wrath in response to a child sacrificing himself to ensure his little brother and his friend can survive the snow, having gone on a journey to save imprisoned men from their village. He saves the boy and then proceeds to destroy the prison camp and free the men. There's also how throughout the movie the boys are followed by a hawk who even attacks the soldiers who try and kill them, so even early on the boys are being watched over.
It has been awhile since I first watched these, so my interpretations may be off by quite a bit, but these are thoughts that have stuck with me since. I should note these movies are period dramas that happen to involve a giant stone warrior, so let that decide if you want to check them out.

Love this moody shot from Daimajin (1966).
This is one guy you don't want to get on the bad side of, because he will keep coming until he gets you, and nothing can stop him.

The next wave of Movie Monster Series figures drops in September, and it’s a big one: Daimajin, Battra, and Megaguirus. Only Megaguirus has been released as a six-inch Bandai vinyl before, but as part of a figure set (or a theater exclusive).
