so, going through the dairena tag, I have to say that I really think that their dynamic is so instrumental in understanding each of the three characters. they really are all tied together through their love for each other.

they really are, it's so...blair and serena knit their souls together when they were children, and it just shapes....everything

dan's entrace into their world is his love for serena, which begins at a faroff look at a party, where he sees BOTH OF THEM. TOGETHER. but he begins to really fall after he really sees her. after witnessing the photoshoot and the fight of 1x04, the first time he and Blair really connect. he learns to see the both of them, Serena and Blair, as real people with real flaws and real virtues. it's Serena as a whole he falls for, but he doesn't until after he sees her best friend as a whole person too.

Serena falls for Dan after coming back to NY after doing the wrost thing she could do to Blair. She promises herself to stay away from Nate completely out of love for Blair, and in concurrence with that choice, she finds Dan.

Blair is forced to reckon with Dan when her best friend Serena sets her sights on him, and then he's always just, around. but he gives decent advice, and Serena is happy. happy in a way that Blair can't remember seeing before, which makes her jealous, both of Serena and of Dan. that Serena can be happy and that Dan can make her so. And then, when Serena shows up at her door broken and scared, and then Dan comes looking for her, Blair breaks his heart. because she loves Serena, and Serena won't see him.

and years later, when Serena breaks again, and Blair has to be the one to fix it, she knows that the only person who cares as much as she does is Dan, so she goes to him. "You love Serena, don't you? Then we have that in common."

and then Blair and Dan find points of connection that arent' Serena, but she's always there. she's an indelible part of each of their hearts, even after they fall in love with each other.

but when it looks like they could be something, Blair backs away, parly because of her own fear of what they're becoming, but mostly, she loves Serena. and Serena is hurt by this, so there's no way Blair can pursue it. so she pursues Louis instead.

eventually blair and dan's gravity is too much for them to hold back anymore (not that dan ever really tried that hard), and serena is made to see what they mean to each other, and because she loves them, she has to give them their chance, since blair tried to give her so many

I could go on, but you're so right, every choice they make regarding each other is wrapped up in the other person. they're so intrinsically connected.

so gold rush is not a serenate song to me because that’s just like not how nate sees serena like it’s a danserena like “everybody wants you everybody wanders what it would be like to love you walk past quick brush” like before they knew each other dan was part of that everybody seeing serena as a mythical figure and then it’s a blairena song because obviously like “what must it be like to grow up that beautiful? with your hair falling into place like dominos my mind turns your life into folklore” like it’s about her looking at serena and seeing the girl she loves more than anything in the entire universe but also like perfection and everything she can never be like they’re both turning serena into this mythical being they’re turning her into folklore everybody wants her what’s it like i want her i want to be her they love they see her but to them she’s also on another level of being she’s not like them she’s always out of reach she’s a “mythical thing.” and that’s just like not how nate has ever seen her. like they grew up together and they’ve been best friends forever and at some point he fell in love with her. like he didn’t fall in love with serena, the person everybody wants, he fell in love with serena, the girl who has a water fight with him on thanksgiving. like she was just serena to him. she was never a mythical being. she was his best friend and he fell in love with her. like his feelings for her were never complicated, he loved her. it was everything else that was complicated. his feelings for blair and then her friendship with blair and then in s3 her life was really really complicated but his feelings were never complicated. he loved her. that’s literally it. and it’s like dan and blair obviously love serena. they’d love her soo much. but it’s also like not simple. it’s inherently tied to a ton of identity issues. like dan loves serena soo much but her place in his life has always been tied to the question of is this my world can this be my world do i want it to be my world? and blair. blair serena identity serena has always been the person blair loves most while also representing everything blair believes is lacking in herself serena is tied to literally every single one of blair’s insecurities. like they love her more than anything but that doesn’t mean it’s not complicated it is and her love for them is also complicated.

Okay so after the dairena thing I’ve been thinking about why I personally don’t see blairena working out, and I think it‘s because for me they’re the classic sapphic best friends yk? When you want someone so badly but you‘re just friends but you don’t even realize that you want her and you also want to be her and sometimes you’re so jealous you hate her but also you love her so fucking much and you will always, always come back to one another. And maybe this is me projecting my own experiences onto them lol but I just can’t see that kind of relationship evolving into a healthy adult one. Cus their friendship was Not Healthy. And I adore Blairena, and it‘s not a question to me that they are in love, but I can’t see them actually having a good relationship yk? Ok I hope this makes sense sorry for dumping my ramblings on you :)

Ok yes i agree with you on most parts, but i do think there’s a possibility for them to become healthier as time goes on, we’ve seen them do it before. Yes, they weren’t the healthiest for the majority of the show especially in the beginning but they were really young, even being in high school for the first 2 season. They do get better the more they mature (still not healthy but healthier) I mean can you imagine s1 blairena having a simple summer in paris? and when juliet tries to sever the relationship between the two they catch on to the fact it’s a lie, something I don’t think they would have done when they were younger.

They learn and they grow up a bit stronger, I think the problem only really comes around season 5 when serena is jealous that dan is with blair (also just going to put it out there, she doesn’t mentions who exactly she’s jealous of). I think Serena was just on her last straw during s5, between getting drugged, dating her old teacher, revisiting her daddy issues and overall trauma it makes sense that “perfect golden girl” mask would slip a little. You know who stays with her through all of it tho? Blair.

It wasn’t just one sided either Serena stuck with Blair through everything in all the other seasons. But we can’t have any of that in the last two seasons since by the time it aired the writers caught wind of the fact blair was more liked than serena and threw all of her good qualities down the drain. I just think if you can stick with someone through stuff like that it’s impossible not develop/grow up alongside them.

Anyway back to the point, I think they could slowly become good together. The jump between high school and college could happen again the older they get until they reach something that resembles a good honest relationship. There’s always the thought that they’d get stuck in a loop again and revert back to their highschool ways but i’m trying to be optimistic.

It makes perfect sense, feel free to ramble anytime :)

With the help of Dan’s best friend Vanessa and her hot mess of an ex-boyfriend Nate, Blair sets out to commit necromancy… and maybe form a polyamorous ghost relationship along the way.

- this is not an actual fic. you are just getting some silly little notes on this post i made because the actual fic is probably never happening

- so first of all i’m not just thinking about ghosts a lot lately; this and this mortal coil, the fic i wrote about derena meeting as ghosts, would be in the same au

- serena died in the equivalent to the shepherd wedding, dan (who had never met her/didn’t know who she was) died later, in the equivalent to their pre-series thankgiving meeting—tho he was saving blair there

- serena has a lot of Feelings revolving around her and dan’s deaths—once she finds out blair could hear/see her, she comes to the conclusion it’s her fault she froze out on the street, and starts to think it’s her fault dan is dead

- in between that, and untangling the canonical everything that went down at and after the shepherd wedding, dan spends a lot of time going “what the FUCK” at serena’s feelings

- nate’s hot mess levels are actually totally justified tbc and actually very close to blair’s, just presented differently and also she hates him at the moment. they’re both grieving with pretty much no support system

- jenny and eric, despite not getting their spots in that summary, do have places in this fic! as if i could leave them out—blair just wants to. eric has been struggling a lot, and she doesn’t want to give him false hope, while jenny is… early s1 jenny. the kind of person blair barely even thinks of noticing

- (there’s this sequence in my brain tho where eric skips taking his meds and serena tells blair and blair just. shows up for him. but she can’t just say that the invisible spirit of his sister was spying on him and he can’t really figure out why she’s there)

- vanessa is really only there because she figured out the whole ‘being haunted’ thing in an honestly sherlockian manner, and then humphrey started insisting—or that’s what blair would tell you, anyway

- while nate has to come to terms with his very intense and screwed up feelings about the past (and blairenate all have to reconcile with each other!), vanessa’s arc would be more about dealing with the utter weirdness of these people and with the fact that dan seems… way more down than she is, and so does jenny. she’s trapped by the present

- there’s a really interesting element to this that blair has to act as an intermediary between dan and vanessa and dan and jenny, and is pretty effectively forced into making friends with them because of it

- utterly delighted by the idea of dan just trying to talk to his sister while blair and jenny are in conflict. they’re glaring each other down and also trying to pretend they aren’t while blair repeats him exactly in a voice like ice. why is dan so charmed by this

- also ‘yes your sister’s ghost is in the room. so is the ghost who she started dating, what a weirdo’ and eric having to deal with that. how do you deal with that. is he nice?

- honestly derena’s early ghost dates would be the cutest shit. they can go anywhere at anytime and no one else knows to stop them. giggling as they change seats at the movie theater because people keep sitting in them. going into museums and doing whatever they want. trying and failing to play pool. deciding to play chess instead because you can just say your moves out loud, right? realizing that neither of them have good enough memories

- blair’s search history is just like ‘am i gay’ and ‘bisexual definition’ and ‘how to kiss ghosts’

- blair herself has this whole thing where she’s been having the worst time and also refusing to accept things as they are. she isn’t dealing with her grief or with still seeing serena or with the idea that maybe ghosts are meant to pass on. not when she is here and she can make the world get on its knees and beg

- so while nate’s not-dealing would, i think, be pretty easy to manage in its own way, blair’s is the driver of the entire fic and therefore can’t be

- and pretty much any of the other mains could call her on that, and ask her if she’s sure she’s meant to be doing this in a way that she would listen to—though the level and type of conflict resulting from that would vary depending on which one (typical blair-serena fight except one of them is intangible, anyone?)

- i’m not actually saying that derena remaining dead is the good ending here, tbc, i’m just saying blair has to deal with some feelings and like. have a conflict about it before they can actually come back

- and idk maybe it’s one of those ‘you just casually made me alive again once you stopped trying wow let’s make out about it’ type moments

- also blair and her girlfriend sabrina and her boyfriend dylan, who are definitely not living under assumed identities and don’t have any resemblance to certain publicly dead people what are you talking about

- constance is torn between ‘blair is paying professional impersonators’ and ‘blair has secretly become a member of the united states marshals despite being seventeen and both serena and that humphrey kid are in witness protection’

Do you think a Dairena endgame could’ve worked like how they have a throuple on the GG reboot?

hmmmmm interesting. gonna come out with a potential hot take here in this corner of the fandom clubhouse but...I don't really feel it.

blair and serena have a very potent, passionate kind of energy between them, but the two of them are always so locked in strife, that them becoming and staying solid romantic partners for each other, even with dan to anchor them, I just don't really see it.

Aww, I wish we had gotten to see Dan, Serena, and Blair all being each other’s besties at one point - the ~love triangle~ always had at least one combination of the three of them at odds. Serena called Dan and Blair her two closest friends in 4x19! Blair called both Dan and Serena her best friends!! They never hung out, the three of them though, even after Dan and Blair became friends. :(

Yeah! @mysteriesofloves sent me this and said that, the first gif should’ve been dan, serena, nate & blair (& the care bear could’ve been cedric slkhfdklhgh) - in the sense of like, these are dynamics we’ve been robbed of. and honestly.... yeah. i wanted so many more friendship scenes. 

like the whole thing in 2x08.... dan, blair and serena being friends have such a good and unique energy. like the three of them together are very chaotic and unbalanced but in a fun way? i don’t know how else to describe this, i feel like they all are extra in their own way, and they don’t have a neutralising force like a nate to kind of go, “wait a minute, what?”  

just imagine blair, serena and dan at a carnival. dan and blair would get competetive over winning toys at games for serena, who would just be amused as hell (and probably win more than both of them combined, lbr). dan would need his hand held on the rollercoaster, possibly. at some point, dan and serena take turns piggybacking blair. there would be lot of popcorn and candyfloss and just general laughing and talking. idk.
