Dir. Sarah Pirozek
Thematically, Sarah Pirozek’s revenge flick shares a commonality with Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman, with a much smaller budget and less known cast. Unfortunately, it also shares that film’s greatest weakness: A nonsensical protagonist whose convictions wax and wane as the plot dictates.
Rosie (Sarah Rich), a teen high-schooler in upstate New York, suffers through the one-year anniversary of the suicide death of her younger sister, Amelia (Samantha Nicole Dunn), still nursing a desire for revenge against the online menace she’s convinced drove her sister to hang herself.
Through a series of mostly incoherent internet sleuthings, Rosie becomes convinced she’s found the culprit  —  a feckless contractor known in the film only as The Man (Marc Menchaca), who fits the purely circumstantial evidence Rosie is utilizing. With her mother conveniently away on business for a week, she tricks him into coming over to her house, and locks him down in the storm cellar so as to interrogate him and get him to confess to his crime against her family.
Things make even less sense after she’s made the initial capture: She drugs him, tortures him, and humiliates him, but it’s clear she hasn’t got any endgame particularly in mind. Following her whims, she keeps him locked up, even as she goes on a date with Rory (Dakota Lustick), a cute boy she’s recently met, and enjoys a night out for herself.
Pirozek, who also produced and wrote the screenplay, doesn’t do her actors any favors, especially Rich, who is asked to veer wildly from fun-loving teen girl, to sadistic torturer, to coquettish romantic interest and back again, all without following a character throughline that makes any sense. Rosie acts so impetuously, and with no central plan, she comes across as considerably more unhinged and, oddly, less sympathetic than the man she’s convinced acted so cruelly against her family.
To be fair, part of Pirozek’s point is to suggest her heroine is what we might call “unreliable,” but the screenplay is amateurishly enough written  —  with clumsy plot transitions and unrealistic character reactions  —  that it doesn’t come off as provocative so much as idiotic. As with Woman, there is most definitely a cinematic need for the outpouring of #metoo fury that has been building up for generations, but to this point, it seems as if we’re still waiting for the violent opus that properly captures it.
