You Are a Dragonfly & I Am Also a Dragonfly
by Dalton Day
You are a dragonfly
& I am also a dragonfly.
You & I like to sit
on the long leaves of plants
on humid days, cutting
the green air open
with our sharp blue bodies
simply by being there.
When we move,
it is in quick bursts,
like how someone breathes
when they are trying
to stop crying.
Neither you nor I have ever cried.
We don’t even know about crying.
Every time we see a pond,
it is the first time
we have seen a pond.

"Dinosaurs Smelled Magnolias"
by Dalton Day
I am climbing a magnolia tree
& you are telling me
that magnolia trees existed
before bees did
which means that
dinosaurs smelled magnolias
& that maybe that
was the last scent
a dinosaur smelled
before it all went bad
& dark & bad &
when I am safely in the tree
you put your hands together
in the shape of a bowl
or a magnolia & that is
where I would like to sleep
& so I do & so I do.

How quiet. I’m a collapsing house. Come collect me.
I think the trees
are firework taxidermy. A steady
reminder of celebration and
light. How quiet. I’m a collaps-
ing house. Come collect me.
