265 - Brideshead Revisited
Tumblr media
We all know that Oscar fawns over costume dramas of literary adaptations -- or so we tell ourselves when forming predictions and one with a whiff of prestige arrives. In 2008, director Julian Jerrold delivered a new adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited with an up-and-coming young cast paired with Dame Emma Thompson as the devoutly religious Lady Marchmain. With Matthew Goode as the social climber Charles Ryder and Ben Whishaw and Hayley Atwell as the siblings he romances, the queer-inflected drama earned modest reviews and box office, with Thompson an outsider Supporting Actress contender through the season.
This episode, Thompson joins our six timers club and we discuss our love for the then-emerging Whishaw. We also look back at Goode's career including the misbegotten Watchmen film, Atwell's career outside of Marvel, and the surprising amount of time that has passed since Thompson's last nomination.
Topics also include Brideshead riff Saltburn, pneumonia terminology, and 2008 queer cinema.

Lion I was singing Joanna from Sweeney Todd cuz I’ve been hearing the josh groban version all over tiktok and now I’m contemplating fully getting into it. Where do I start??
Tumblr media
(insert public apology for using boomer meme templates to get the point across)
would that i had finished the deranged comic sans powerpoint 101 for sweeney todd by now i would link it here but as it is it still needs a lot of work before i'm even remotely comfortable posting it hOWEVER that doesn't mean i can't still be of some assistance
(disclaimer: i am about to throw a LOT of information at you and you are by no means obligated to try and digest it all at once please instead do so at your leisure/your level of interest instead)
sweeney todd 101 cliffnotes version for people who want to get into sweeney todd by someone who is way too invested in this show
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry to anyone who doesn't like the office this is the only cold open that matters to me in this particular stage of life rn
so for those who aren't already familiar with sweeney todd (or have a passing familiarity with it either via sweeney todd related tiktok content or other similarly related content consumption) one of the first things i would recommend starting with is the 2007 tim burton film since it's a pretty good place to start (and also easily one of the best film adaptations of a musical imo). you can find it on hbo max or on youtube for 3.99 if you don't have and/or want to pay for an hbo max subsciption. (you can also 🏴‍☠️ it because capitalism sucks. remember to sail the seven seas* responsibly!)
Tumblr media
johnny depp and helena bonham carter in sweeney todd (2007) dir. tim burton
now if you're interested in other productions (and/or not particularly interested in the film) there's the 2014 half concert half staged proshot starring emma thompson as mrs. lovett and christian borle as pirelli that you can find on youtube for FREE (here is a link to act one and another link to act two AND a link to the opening on it's own because it is absolutely PHENOMINAL i genuinely can't recommend it enough).
Tumblr media
emma thompson and welsh opera singer sir byrn terfel jones in sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street in concert 2014
there is also the original 1982 proshot starring some of the original cast such as angela lansburry (unfortunately len cariou, the original sweeney does not reprise his role BUT george hearn does a phenominal job in the role). you can find this one on amazon for 3.99 to rent or it and a plethora of other musical proshots on BroadwayHD for 11.99/mo but unless you're interested in watching other musicals and plays on BroadwayHD i would suggest renting it on amazon or 🏴‍☠️ it for free if you know where to look (i honestly don't know what pirating musicals looks like outside of yt bootlegs and i am still very very new to actual bootleg trading so you'd have to ask someone else)
Tumblr media
the late dame angela lansburry and george hearn in the 1982 proshot version of sweeney todd
and finally, my personal favourite, the 2023 broadway revival. unfortunately we only have five singles that have (officially) been released (which you can find here on spotify) but we also have the official ballad of sweeney todd performace from this year's tony awards AND there IS a way to watch it if you are like me and can't afford to fly to new york and see it at the lunt-fontanne theater (just dm me for the details). this is quite possibly my favourite version of this story and if great comet wasn't already an indicator that josh groban is a great fit for broadway this DEFINITELY is imo.
Tumblr media
josh groban and annaleigh ashford in the 2023 broadway revival of sweeney todd that i am definitely very normal about
other recommendations include sideway's video essay on the music in sweeney todd, christine baranksi's version of worst pies in london (and her criminally underrated version of a little priest with kelsey grammar in a 20th anniversary concert version that i would give my left kidney to see in full), imelda staunton and michael ball's version of a little priest from a 2012 revival, patti lupone as mrs. lovett playing the tuba in the stripped down 2005 broadway revival, lin manuel miranda's sweeney todd themed hamilton parody for broadway cares featuring the funniest jonathan groff cameo i've seen in my life (and the recent ham4ham version performed by the current 2023 revival cast) and my last braincell when confronted with literally any sweeney todd related content these days.

In the name of the father
Young Belfastian Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis) admits that he was in London at the time of the incident. He also admits that he is not a model citizen, having committed a petty robbery while in London. He does however profess his innocence when it comes to the bombing of the Guildford Pub in London in 1974, the event which killed several people inside. A self-professed non-political person, he and his three co-accused, dubbed the Guildford Four, are thought to be provisional members of the I.R.A. Their self-professed innocence is despite each having signed a statement of guilt which they claim were signed under duress. Their case includes having provable alibis for the time frame of the bombing. And eventually, Joe McAndrew (Don Baker), a known I.R.A. member, admits to the bombing. Dubbed the Maguire Seven, seven others, primarily members of Gerry's extended family including his father Giuseppe (Pete Postlethwaite), are accused of being accessories to the bombing. Following on the work initiated by Giuseppe, Gerry works on a campaign to prove their collective innocence, this work with the assistance of compassionate lawyer Gareth Peirce (Dame Emma Thompson). As Gareth works on this campaign, she is faced with obstacle after obstacle placed by Robert Dixon (Corin Redgrave), who led the initial investigation and questioning of the four accused on behalf of the Police.

“I would say that the MeToo movement is not going to be derailed by that, but in order for it not to be derailed, we just have to keep talking. We have to keep talking and refuse to allow it to be derailed by a case where two very, very, very famous people, which has been blown out of all remote human proportion by the press… that’s something that can’t be avoided.”
“But a case where the two protagonists are that famous is not representative, and it’s just very important to remember that."
“This movement, which is about human kindness and is so simple really and has been made so complicated, cannot and will not be derailed by one case, and that’s not going to happen actually, it simply won’t happen.”
Dame Emma Thompson DBE telling it like it is.

Doctor Who & Crossing Timelines
I keep imagining criss-crossed Timelines and Parallel Universes with Emma Thompson as Doctor Who meeting Dame Judi Dench as Doctor Who all running into Jo Martin as Doctor Who who is 'hanging out' with Alex Kingston as Doctor River Song and then they all stumble across universes until they meet up again in the sumptuous TARDIS of Doctor Amy Pond and her companion Rory (Yes, he is in a kilt) who are entertaining her visitors Doctor Grace O'Brien (played by Sharon D. Clarke), Yaz, THIRTEEN, and Lady Vastra.

Not only was Emma Thompson brilliant but had they cast a man the discourse would have been very stupid and I don’t think the non British public would have understood the panto dame aspects of the Trunchbull that is innate to British audiences. (When you see it onstage it tracks much more, sometimes things just naturally click on stage). But, there’s a good argument to be made that the Trunchbull being played by a man would not have worked on film since a panto dame is inherently a creature of the stage. Regardless, Emma was astounding.

Top 10 filmed Shakesperian performance
My favorite Shakesperian performances.Few ground rules
1.No films that are inspired by Shakespeare .So no Throne of Blood ,West Side Story ,Forbidden Planet ,10 Things I Hate About You etc
2.Each production only gets one block .cause if I didnt do that this would be flooded with great performances from just one or two productions
3.ONE role per actor
10.Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson as Benedict and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
So I was tempted to put either Michael Keatons Dogberry or Denzel Washingtons Don Pedro here ,but I had to include this smart bickering couple played brillaintly by Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson .Also my favorite Shakesperian performance by Branagh (Though I havent seen him as Iago in Othello yet )
