Raw Materials by Bruce Nauman

Nauman has a focus on audio and the effects it can have on its listener. This audio installation was one where different clips of speech were being played at the same time. His goal is not only to push language to its limits, but have an apparent on the listener. This relates to my project as I want the voice reading the text I write to have some effect on how the reader views the piece
Drawing From Life Damian Goidich 2016

The artist uses charcoal for its versatility and expressive qualities. This is an example of the charcoal based work that Goiddich does, expressive figure drawings with varying values. It is for this same reason that I want to utilize charcoal within my own work. The motion that is implied with the smudges of the vine charcoal are elements I want to have in my work as I slowly erase it.

This artist uses a pallet knife and paint to achieve their colorful, architectural style. While the vivid colors are not an aspect of my work, the form and texture involved is something I would like to emulate in my project. There is something convincing without the over inclusion of detail that leads to a very intriguing image.

Digital Illustrations from the comic book 'The Fall' by Jared Muralt. This style uses flat, realistic colours with shading that is clean and unblended. The details are shown with the lineart for example the creases on the clothing and facial features. I like this comic style and it will appeal to a younger audience.
Damian Goidich charcoal illustrations. Some details are refined but then other parts of the drawing are rough and smudged. I like the messy effect the charcoal has as it makes the image more striking and gives a simple drawing more meaning. I think it will work well with an apocalyptic illustration.
Petra Dufkova watercolour illustrations. There is detail and strong colours with moody washes that soften the illustration. I like the effect of the reflections of the buildings in washes of colour. The visible, messy strokes add a nice contrast to the details.

Extended Tactile Research: Damian Goidich ‘Conceptual Charcoal’
Statement
My art is an exercise of interpretation, of exploring the inner world of the subject. We are currently experiencing a period of fragmentation and upheaval in our norms, beliefs and identity, causing humanity great cultural distress and personal existential turmoil. I attempt to reveal something not readily identifiable, to translate emotions simmering just below surface of the model or subject, to bring the interior to the exterior.
They are the motivation behind my work.
-
I wished to really hone in and develop my tactile work and I trust that I was thinking too ‘perfectly’ of this genre of work as it is out of my comfort zone. Thinking more into it, I trust that the messiness of a piece would work more coherently with my photographic images. I hope to soon undergo some small thumbnail charcoal self-portraits, trying to express both in practice and execution my longing for touch with another and the desire that is craved when that touch finally occurs. Looking at Goidich work’s, I enjoy his distressed approach, and I trust I will take this use of inspiration into my own tactile practice.

6. Elements and Principles of Design:
Some elements of design worth mentioning is the use of line and color to create unity. Another strong element of design is the use of space to create emphasis.
The repeated use of lines to sculpt out features of the face, neck, and background all work in conjunction to unify the art piece. The use of only black and white also unifies the artwork. The small amount of space around the head of the figure makes the face the focal point of the drawing, because it takes up so much of the paper.
7. Why I chose this piece, and how it relates to the previous post:
I chose this art piece, because of the almost painterly art style while only using charcoal. The smoke exiting the mouth almost bleeds off of the figure’s face, creating a very interesting composition for the piece, which also drew my attention.
This functionally relates to the previous post, because of the large amount of space that the head occupies. Both of the art pieces also do not have the figure touching the edges of the page, which further isolates the figure in its space.
