obligatory disclaimer that colonialism and spanish colonialism of cuba was bad and just because two nations have a relationship similar to parent-child relationship does not mean it was good or healthy

Cuba for the longest time was not the most favored among the Spanish colonies, and was considered to be a mere neglected stopping point for the Spanish fleet, on their way to plunder the mainland before returning to Spain with vast mineral riches. Up until the 18th century, it was subject to lots of attacks from pirates, british privateers and french corsairs. While defenses were bolstered, this didn’t do too much, as in 1628, a Dutch fleet plundered the Spanish ships of Havana, before English admiral and pirate Myngs occupied part of the Island.
