Follow up to previous post about homestuck twitter 2019

Reaching out and deciding to follow up:

I think I will begin by adding context to a post I made on Medium detailing my experiences with transandophobia in the fandom at the time. You might want to read it first, but that's up to you.

What's important to note, is while I will be adding names, this is not meant as a callout post. I'm not trying to list sins, I'm trying to talk about what happened from my personal perspective.

This is fucking long and I'm not even done with the first point as of typing this so under a cut it goes lol

Also heads up: There are screenshots in here I do not have the energy to caption right now. I'll try to do it in the future, and feel free to poke me to do it more quickly.

First:

A few disclaimers: Because of the nature of Twitter, I have little to no receipts of what happened as of this posting. Ideally I would have images of or links to tweets or discord chats or anything else, but I know at least one person I will be referencing mass deleted their tweets on a regular basis. 

That's Kate Mitchell. I don't know why I bother being vague about her so much, since she's infamous enough even to people who weren't around at the time.

Okay, well, I do know. I'm still afraid. And I don't mean to build her up as some big scary evil trans fem, but as many of you know, she was responsible for a lot of harassment, and a lot of my harrassment specifically.

But also she is a trans fem on the internet and was Known before she got big in the Homestuck fandom (she was a team manager of some Overwatch League -- you can google it, I don't know enough about esports to explain, but suffice to say, she left that community with some bad accusations there as well). As such, she had her own page or thread or whatever on kiwifarms, and people used that thread of "evidence" against her when trying to criticize her.

Note: Do not fucking do that. I don't care what a queer person has done, never trust much less spread "evidence" you find on kiwifarms. They're lying transphobic assholes to put it mildly. If anything on any of those threads are true, you'll find it elsewhere. There's a reason Kate supporters called her critics "useful idiots" (outside of just wanting to call us idiots and then laugh because we didn't understand what the term meant in some real "I'm more woke/educated/better than you bullshit"). (From Wikipedia: In political jargon, a useful idiot is a term currently used to reference a person perceived as propagandizing for a cause—particularly a bad cause originating from a devious, ruthless source—without fully comprehending the cause's goals, and who is cynically being used by the cause's leaders.[1][2] The term was often used during the Cold War to describe non-communists regarded as susceptible to communist propaganda and manipulation.[1])

In a similar vein, I've seen some of the callout posts and image receipts made for Kate and I just can't sign off on most of them. Some of them lack context, some of them are fearmongering about fictional content, some of them aren't actually that serious but treated as just as bad as everything else. At the same time, I'd be a hypocrit if I didn't mention that I used to agree with some of those points and it took many discussions and personal growth to figure my shit out. (What is funny to me personally, is at least one features Kate being an ass to one of my trans fem friends, so I do that point at screen meme each time I see it. If you see an icon of Ardata with a clown nose, that's my friend.)

This is all to say: I have complicated feelings about talking about Kate publicly. My dislike of her has gotten me accused of transmisogyny, and I do my absolute best to check my feelings and biases before I say anything to avoid perpetuating any transmisogyny. However, it was also often used as a bludgeon to prevent people from talking about their experiences, whether or not they were also trans fem. My problem with Kate is that she was a bully, and one of the tools she used was her identity as a trans lesbian. That does not say anything about any other trans lesbian or the concept of being a trans lesbian. Just her.

You see? Paragraphs of me making sure everyone knows where I come from with Kate. It's important, but the fear of being misinterpreted has made it hard for me to name her specifically. As recently as a year or two ago, I had an ex-friend accuse me of "still crying about a trans woman disagreeing with [me] on a podcast" (paraphrased) when I vague posted about it. The fear is not unfounded.

This is all to say -- Kate was known to mass delete her tweets, even before she left Twitter for good. I only have one or two tweets of hers saved (the one I'm certain about is in the Medium post, so I'll get to it).

Kate was not the only one who deleted Tweets, as documented by Homestuck.net (which is a great resource for Homestuck archival stuff, despite the discourse surrounding it (which I might get into on another post down the road)).

@andrewhussie: Andrew Hussie’s personal twitter, historically used to troll people and directly communicate with the fanbase. Deleted all tweets in 2022, before that the last activity was in late 2021.

Last activity: November 6, 2022, all tweets deleted.

@d-clussie.tumblr: Formerly @mspandrew, this is Andrew Hussie’s personal tumblr, nigh identical in use to his Twitter. Deleted all posts in 2022, before that the last activity was in early 2021.

No WP staff's accounts are included in this, so I don't know who all deleted all their content or large sections of it, but it wasn't rare.

I link a twitter thread of mine that is my immediate reaction to the Toblerone June "canonization"

This, I think, is what got me on Kate and Aysha's radars (I think it was this thread or a similar one that got quote retweeted to Aysha's locked twitter and then got noticed by Kate, putting me more on her radar) outside of "another Homestuck podcaster rubbing elbows with people we know better." This is the tweet that leads to the most uncomfortable and ultimately traumatic podcast interview of my life (I say as though I have guested on more than that podcast lmao). I can dig more into it later.

Shoving this here, as I'm writing this and have mentioned Aysha several times (down below) but have not figured out a good place to talk about who she is. Also I'm not sure if her pronouns are she/her or they/them. I think people refer to her using she/her, so that's what I will do, and I'll correct it if I find out I'm wrong.

Aysha is the lead writer at What Pumpkin. She wrote several volumes of Friendsim, helped with the Epilogues, wrote for and has her own self insert in Pesterquest, co-founded Snake Solutions with Kate, etc. You can look up all her contributions pretty easily. She is often considered "one of the good ones" at WP, but she was just better at keeping things on the down low until the whole Sarah Z/Gio situation, which I'll link to later. Probably in a reblog or at the very end.

This is almost word for word a tweet Kate made, in one of her "kinder" moments. Again, no receipts. Maybe someone has it out there somewhere, but I think if anyone had been diligently archiving Kate's tweets, we would have seen more of them by now.

 I was personally publicly ridiculed on an “unofficial” Homestuck podcast (that regularly had WP staff on it and even got an exclusive statement from Hussie to be read aloud on it) as a “June skeptic” simply for not having anything to add when the topic turned to transfem readings for Egbert in the comic and my previous twitter statements about not being a huge fan of Toblerone canon (my Twitter thread about it below).

That podcast was Perfectly Generic Podcast. It was created and run by Kate, and, from my understanding, launched her popularity. I'm not sure if she already had connections, because she was able to get What Pumpkin staff on pretty early on. As such, a lot of people listened to it.

I go into depth on how I got on the podcast and my feelings about it in the linked thread, but I'd like to add a little more.

I was kind of frozen once the episode ended. That was... fine, right? I tried to justify it to myself. It wasn't until my friend (the one whose favor got me on the podcast) talked to me and, after I was kinda weird about it, mentioned they felt weird about it, did I realize how terrible I felt. I had been given the file to upload onto my own feed since it was a crossover, but I never uploaded it. The episode is still out there, along with a transcript, if anyone cares to search it out, but I'm not going to link it.

More people came forward admitting it was an uncomfortable episode. I blocked Kate and kind of... shut down? I still had episodes to record and publish, and I didn't publicly talk about my feelings until the linked thread months later.

Speaking of the block:

So the above is from one of Kate's locked accounts. I was (obviously) not privvy to this one, and thus I've been hesitant to post it. But it's been years, and I'm tired of sitting on shit that was shown to me and made me feel worse about everything without being able to provide the context. None of y'all know how I got this screenshot, anyway. Also, it's clear that before I blocked her (or before she noticed) she had been saying some shit about me. (I ended up having someone tell her to keep the money.)

One of my friends vagued about the episode on my behalf, and Kate, in turn, also vague posted about it on main.

In the line of sharing screenshots that were from places I didn't have access to, but none of y'all know who shared them with me... "Jax Does Homestuck" is the old name for my podcast "Live Laugh Stuck." This was the episode that came out after my episode on PGenPod. I'm blacking out the people I don't know are for sure part of WP staff or otherwise someone to naturally come up in this discussion

And yes, I'm sticking with calling them traumas. I have psychiatric permission and everything, if that even matters. I don't know if I'll touch on this again elsewhere in this post, but in case I don't, I guess I want to end this section saying that this whole thing caused me to lose friends, before I even started accepting and opening up about "proship" views, which lost me more. I was invited to then wordlessly kicked out of a Dirkkat zine because I got on Kate's bad side, and attracted the ire of others in her circle like Dani/lalonders, who might be mentioned later. I don't know. This is already so long and I don't think they get vagued in my Medium post and one of the things I want to bring up in regards to them is antisemitism which I simply don't feel qualified to do off the cuff, as a white gentile.

I also think it’s important to note that around this time, most if not all bnfs were now associated with WP either on a contract basis (like writing one or more routes for Pesterquest) or new employees, even the ones causing the most visible and purposeful harassment in the fandom.

Kate started out as a bnf (big name fan) and got hired on as a writer for Pesterquest, then for Homestuck 2, and I think just as official staff? I don't know how What Pumpkin staffing worked. She also co-founded a company, Snake Solutions, with Aysha. Honestly, I can't remember everyone else who turned from bnf to official staff or contracter for PQ. There were several. Sarah Zedig. Pip? Greiver? KC? Dani was a big one (how I first heard about it pictured below), but I don't think this ended up amounting to anything. Could be wrong.

As I mentioned before, I feel ill-equipped to go into depth on them. The most I can say is they rivaled Kate in both popularity and shittiness and, in my opinion, were often used as a shield against transandrophobic/racist criticisms, since they're a black trans masc (correct me if I'm wrong about their specific identity), and the main target for Kate and co's harrassment was a black trans masc. If you know who I'm referencing, you know, but as of now I think I'll stick to vague references for them.

Vriska: I have one million and three problems with Vriska’s route, but keeping on the topic of trans rep and discourse from Pesterquest, Vriska is very heavily coded as a trans girl. Or, at least, she is if you know anything about who wrote her or any of the discourse surrounding Vriska at the time.

Kate wrote Vriska's PQ route. Hussie was going to, but she convinced them to let her do it. This is also I think Kate's first official work for WP. Just for like, idk, timeline context? lol

It being said that it’s fine to change canon bisexuals to lesbians because there are so many bisexuals in homestuck that it doesn’t matter if you take some away. .... (I don’t have the referenced tweet, unfortuantely, but here’s a similar one, which may seem innocuous but is coming from a person who had harassed people for hc’ing a character with no canon sexuality bi instead of a lesbian)

Bnfs, some of which, as I mentioned, later became WP staff and kept saying these same things, often said things like “It’s lesbophobic and transmisogynistic to expect a trans lesbian to be nice about men or include men in what we do” setting aside the fact that said people actively harassed trans mascs and “boy likers”, encouraged other people to do the same, and also were, as I said, bnfs and later WP staff who had a lot of influence over the fandom. There’s a difference between prioritizing trans lesbians and actively shitting on trans mascs and “boy likers” to your thousands of followers.

This tweet references Kate qrt'ing and mass harassing a black, newly turned 18, trans girl, who made a post on her twitter account with a tiny following that got maybe a handful of notes about racism she saw in Vast Error. Kate was, I think, the lead writer on Vast Error's visual novel, Snowbound Blood. A huge problem with VE is, at least back then, every fucking ounce of criticism would be found by the creator (I forgot his name tbh) and commented on, usually argued with. It's a big reason why I could never get into it.

The person in question also denies ban evading, and even then, it's not an excuse to put an extremely vulnerable person on blast for the crime of criticizing Vast Error.

The formatting on this one is weird, but I had to get screenshots of the thread because I could only see the linked tweet in discord. Anyway, this is how seriously people treated June. She wasn't just a cool interpretation of a character. How you felt about her was directly linked to how much you cared about trans fems.

Also like, I doubt it was intentional, but the "14 characters" message is, at the very least a terrible coincidence, as references to "14 words" is a white supremecist dog whistle.

This is the thread that shared it

It's a "leaked" thread from one of Kate's private twitters. Why do I say "leaked"? Because I personally feel Kate was fucking mad that people enjoyed Trace's Tavros route, which had a better Vriska than what she wrote (in my, and others' opinions). You can see the discord message in question is from months prior, but only got released after Tavros's route came out, and I know she vented about it before then. Also, this private twitter, basically anyone could request to join. I followed it for a little while! But "leaking" it was another excuse to target a previously mentioned black trans masc fan, blaming them for the leak with no proof.

This is not me defending Trace. I don't know shit about him. I don't know if this was a one-off comment taken out of context, or proof of repeated violations. I just know Kate and the discourse she approved of benefited from this being leaked. This one is probably the most speculation vs actual fact I have here, so I guess fitting that it's last.

Alright i puss in boots, i have a whole lot of feelings about it, so buckle up! This is gonna be long, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!

So im a very grand dreamworks fan, they where one of my main inspiration on why i want to become an animator, through my whole life, on 2020 i got incredibly hyperfixated on dreamworks as a studio (their history, production of their movies yadayada) that hyperfixation has followed me to beginnings of 2022 so im very god damn attached to this studio (cuz autism) so man i got so emotional when i saw the new intro i started tearing up aaaa, okay now onto the movie.

After the universal buy of dreamworks i was very fucking worried about the future of the animation studio, so much so that i really just accepted httyd 3 as their last movie, they went out with a bang i sated to myself, and i wasn't much more re-comforted when their first movie after the buy was abominable, is a nice movie yes! But it has that illumination-e feeling of being just a safe product (regarding its story, thr animation is fucking gorgeous) and then it came trolls world tour (sure was okay) the boss baby sequel, the croods 2 (i actually really liked this one it was very funny and creative!) Spirit untamed (what a sick joke! I mean the animation is pretty and all but ive always hated the spirit series bc of shiting all over the og movie, sorry im salty abt this one) But then! The bad guys came out!! And it was such a fun and creative and beautiful movie!! Having such an awesome art, so dynamic and cool the mix of 2d and 3d it was just so cool! and such a fun story and it was just soo good!!! And it gave me so much hope for the future of the studio!! Specially after seeing the trailer for the puss in boots movie!! Seeing that dreamworks is also taking this more experimental approach to animation made me sososo happy!! And yk i was going to watch puss in boots only for the animation before, i didnt really tough it would have much of a deep story i was contempt with just watching a silly goofy movie with beautiful animation!

And don't get me wrong the first puss in boots haves very good story and the emotional moments landed pretty well!! I just didn't think dreamworks would do that kind of stuff anymore (due to what they've been putting out lately being mainly funny silly movies [wich theres nothing wrong with!!]) BUT HOLY CHEESE N RISE!! Through this movie, if i wasn't tearing up about how cool and beautiful the animation and the fight scenes where, i was tearing up about gato's conflict with his fear of death and his relationship with kitty and fucking seeing gato's past life with shrek and donky and man im so emotional about this

And also the music it was soo good i absolutely adored the motif for the death and the little "dreamworks motif"™ at the end it was so beautiful

And the character design!!!! Omg it was soo good, DEATH HOLLY MOLLY DEATH he looked sooo goood it was so fucking scary and cool!!! And his weapon!!!!! And then theres the little dog he was soo cute, and the other guy that i forgot his name!! And goldi and the three bears!!!!

Speaking of which i also really fucking loved goldi and the three bears' acr and their interactions where absolutely delightful and nice!! And i really loved their ending

And perrito's and kitty's story, and the final confrontation of gato and death!!! And aaaa it was all so beautiful and awesome and cool and dazzling, and then the ending of perrito, kitty, and gato going to far far away, and the scene at the beginning of the first fight of gato and death!!! It was soooo sooo cool, the colors and the lightning IN GENERAL ALLL OF THE FIGHT SCENES WHERE SO AWESOME!!!

And man the little scene of gato remembering his mom giving him the boots, i was so nice guck i cant believe how attached im to these freacking characters

And like dude the colors where so vibrant and aaa this movie was just so beautiful!!! Im so happy and sad and im just a mess of emotions due to this movie it makes me so happy for the future of dreamworks animation, and mainstream animation in general, because and i cannot stress enough, animation is not a genera for kids, is an art form, just as versatile and beautiful as any other.

Anyways this movie was pretty epic probably my favorite from this decade with gillermo del toro's pinocchio and i for once, can't wait what the future will get us :]

putting on his helmet whilst still maintaining the eye contact, he quickly drove away and you can't help but continue to just watch his figure retreat to the size of a dot until he was completely away from your line of vision

you were in the library, seated in the table changbin used the day before

exactly 30 minutes before the actual tutoring session

“ what are you gonna do about it?” you reply, taunting him

gruvia fic: a song of ice and water

chapter 1

author's note: NO ONE asked for this. deadass no one. basically this is a gruvia game of thr*nes AU. and this is just like a pilot episode so ill see how everyone responds to this, and see if i even still like the idea, and will possibly continue it. now, even if u have not watched game of thrones, u can still follow along to this. im just using the same world as game of thrones, and will explain the background. its basically a medieval AU but i dont know much ab medieval times, but what i do know ab, is game of thrones lol. so yea no promises with this fic as in if i will continue or not. but here we go! enjoy!!<333

Many years ago, the country of Westeros was divided into seven kingdoms. However, after the conquest of Aegon Dragneel, his dragons, and his dragon slayer magic, he conquered and unified the seven kingdoms, to which he presided rule over. Hundreds of years later, his family still remains the house that sits on the throne: The Dragneels. With current king, Zeref (or as many refer to him as "The Mad King"), the world has been thrown into chaos.

The current regions of Westeros are split into nine provinces. The North is ruled by house Fullbuster, Lord of Winterfell. The Iron Islands are ruled by house Redfox, Lord of Pyke. The Riverlands are ruled by house Lockser, Lord of Riverrun. The Westerlands are ruled by house Heartfelia, Lord of Casterly Rock. The Vale is ruled by house Marvel, Lord of the Eyrie. Dorne is ruled by house Dreyar, Lord of Sunspear. The Stormlands are ruled by house Scarlet, Lord of Storm's End. The Reach is ruled by house Strauss, Lord of Highgarden. And finally, The Crownlands are ruled by the king, which is Zeref of house Dragneel, who sits on the Iron Throne in the country's capital, King's Landing. The rest of house Drganeel resides on an island just off the shore of King's Landing called Dragonstone.

The nine provinces and many allies must now unite and overthrow their unjust, evil king.

"Excuse me?" Gray said through gritted teeth and felt his blood beginning to boil. He didn't want his mother to witness the outburst of anger that was to come, but it seemed that was what would happen.

"I'm sorry, son." Mika lowered her grey eyes and held a hand out to the table, putting it on top of Gray's.

"An arranged marriage?!" Gray shot up from his seat, banging his fists to the cold wood.

"Dear, calm down." Her voice remained smooth.

"How am I supposed to stay calm?! Father fights alongside all the other lords in rebellion, fighting a war against the bloody king, and you expect me to sit back and take a wife?!" Gray never yelled at his mother like this, but what she was asking of him was unthinkable.

"Gray, I know you're upset-" Mika stood and placed a hand on Gray's shoulder.

"Upset?! Mother how could you ask me to do this? I've been training my whole life for something like this. My magic is just as strong as Father's. I should be out on the field with him!" Gray felt tears began to sting his eyes.

He'd fought battles before, but something like this felt like his destiny. It was a full fledged war amongst all of Westeros. To just sit on the side and watch it all unfold would make a mockery of all he'd trained for. He and his father's ice magic combined would be unstoppable. All Gray ever wanted to do was fight to protect his people, his home, and his family. It was what made him feel alive, and it was being taken from him.

"Your father needs more men to fight. Lord Lockser of Riverrun is finally willing to give aid to our cause, but only under the condition that you marry his daughter." She tried her best to explain.

"I am the future Lord of Winterfell. I am to be Warden of The North. How can I claim these titles if I have nothing to show for it?! 'Lord Gray shuddered in fear in his castle with his wife as everyone bravely fought.' How am I supposed to live with that?" His anger was simmering to frustration.

"That is exactly what you are. The future Lord of Winterfell. And doing this is a service not only to our country, but our family as well. You're eighteen now, Gray. It's time you took a wife and continued the Fullbuster name." Mika put her hands against her son's cheeks.

"I have plenty of time for that, Mother."

"Not if you go and get yourself killed in this war!" She shook him a bit.

"But I-"

"No 'but's, Gray. Now, I'm sorry that you cannot marry for love, and that you cannot be by your father's side. I truly am. But this is your duty right now. This is the best thing you can do. You know there must always be a Fullbuster in Winterfell, dear. You must be Lord until your father returns. Being a lord includes marrying and having children." She took her hands off her son's face, and Gray sucked up his tears.

He sunk back into his seat at the table with a numb look on his face. He slowly reached for his cup of wine and chugged the rest that was in there.

"So I'm to marry Juvia Lockser?" Gray let out sugh after finishing his drink and finally looked back up to his mother.

"Yes." Mika nodded.

"Hmph." Gray poured himself another glass of wine. "I wish I could at least marry someone I'm already acquainted with. Lucy Heartfelia or Erza Scarlet. Even Mirajane Strauss. They're all beautiful and skilled in battle.

"As is Juvia. I know you've never met her, but I'm sure you've heard stories." Mika sat back down at the table.

"Stories?" Gray raised a brow.

"Juvia Lockser: The Rain Woman."

Gray choked on his drink. "Oh lord, that is her isn't it?" He remembered. Just as he said that, he heard ran begin to pitter outside the window of the castle.

"Indeed it is."

"That'll be just great." Gray rolled his eyes. "A wife who brings rain with her everywhere she goes. We'll never see a sunny day in Winterfell as long as she's here."

"Like we see any sun anyway." Mika gave a teasing look to her son.

"Suppose you're right." Gray sighed.

"Don't be so glum. I've heard stories that her blue hair actually controls the waves of the oceans and that she can flood out her enemies with just a flick of her wrist." Mika smiled warmly, trying her best to comfort Gray.

"Yes, and I've heard everyone in The Riverlands fears her." Gray muttered.

"That must make her a great warrior." Mika reached out again to Gray's hand, to which he didn't retract his.

"When do I might my scary, gloomy, warrior bride?" Gray said, slightly annoyed.

There was a knock on the door. It was Gray's adopted brother, Lyon. His family was a great house in the north that attempted to rebel against the Fullbusters and take their spot at Winterfell. However, they were unsuccessful. The entire family was killed except for their only som and heir, Lyon Vastia. He was just a boy when it all happened, just as Gray was. Silver Fullbuster decided to spare the boy and raise him as his own. In turn, Gray considered him as a brother.

"My Lord, My Lady," He entered the room. "Juvia Lockser has arrived."

"Thank you, Lyon." Mika nodded, and Lyon nodded back before exiting the room.

"She's here?!" Gray exclaimed.

"Yes, I was, well, putting off telling you, to say the least." Mika chuckled.

"Yeah, maybe! When was this deal made?!"

"About two months ago..." Mika said, sheepishly.

"Two months?! Mother-"

"Come, come, dear, we have to welcome your bride-to-be." She wrapped her arm in Gray's and began to walk them out the door.

The two made their way through the castle grounds, past all the servants and throught the stone towers. Lyon was with them, holding an umbrella over them to keep them dry.

There was a carriage at the gate of the castle. It was blue and red, the colors of Riverrun. One of the knights opened the carriage, and another held out an umbrella. A pale hand took it and stepped out of the carriage.

Her hair was a vibrant blue, just as all the stories said. The ends were curled tightly, hanging just above her shoulders. She wore a blue gown that puffed out a bit, and on top of it was a poncho. Once her deep eyes met Gray's, he felt a pang of emotion strike him. Her rich blue eyes- while firece- seemed so sad, and they were practically hidden by her long, heavy lashes. She wasn't at all what he pictured her to be.

Juvia steadily approached Gray. "Hello, My Lord." Her voice was quiet as she curtsied.

"My Lady." Gray nodded and took her hand, planting a light kiss on it, as was what was expected of him. A light blush grazed her cheeks, and she looked down.

"Hello, My Lady." Juvia turned to Mika and curtsied again.

"It's nice to meet you, Juvia." Mike gave her a soft smile, hoping to make her feel more welcome.

"Come, dear, let's get you settled in and ready for your welcome feast." Mika reached out to Juvia, wrapping an arm around her, and she sheepishly followed.

"I will see you tonight, My Lady." Gray gave Juvia another nod who blushed once again, averting her gaze.

Lyon and Gray watched her walk away with Mika.

"She doesn't seem as scary as everyone says." Gray shrugged.

"She's a young girl who was shipped off to a completely foreign land all on her own to marry a stranger. I'm sure she's the one who's scared." Lyon said.

"Yeah. I guess I do feel bad." Gray admitted.

"Well I certainly don't feel bad for you. She's absolutely gorgeous." Lyon gawked.

"Damn, Lyon, calm down. She is my wife after all." Gray teased. "And I'd much rather be on the battlefield than getting married. You know that."

"She's not your wife yet." Lyon focused his gaze on Juvia as she walked away, seeming to disregard Gray's joke and put all his focus on her.

"Well," Gray broke his stare. "Let's go get ready for this welcome feast, I suppose."

Fun. No matter genre or style, comics should always be fun. Unfortunately, sometimes, comics fail on this point either through content or execution. While it’s true that “fun” may be a quickly moving target for audiences generation to generation, it shouldn’t be too hard to point out comics that miss this. Even the most progressive and innovative comics have a “fun” quotient. Currently, DC Comics seems to be struggling with this notion in a significant segment of their line. However, there are some titles which have no problem exuding “fun!” It’s telling that the company that would be known as DC launched their first title in 1935, New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine. It’s even more telling, that this title evolved into More Fun Comics. From the very beginning, there’s been a notion of “fun.”

It may be easy to say that the element of “fun” is elusive and subjective. However, there are some classic titles that due to mature themes may seem to contradict this notion. Let’s look at Watchmen. While this comic is full of mature elements, it never eliminates the aspect of fun. The use of the Charlton Comics characters as analogs is an instant indicator of “fun.” It’s clear that Alan Moore is tying in to the history of comics, not only Charlton’s history, but the very history of comics as his backstory evokes the Golden Age of DC’s history. While Nite Owl, Silk Spectre and the rest are more or less original creations, it’s clear that they echo characters like the Golden Age Flash, Green Lantern and Atom that were in use in the DC Universe at the time. Any contemporary reader would be aware of this. It’s not hard to imagine that reader understanding that Moore was creating a sort of synergy with the legacies in the DC Universe.  While not an analog for the Justice Society of America, the Minutemen are that world’s first team of mystery men like the JSA in the traditional DC Universe. Evoking legacy is one of the primal elements of comic book “fun.” This is what made the reintroduction of the Justice Society of America in Justice League of America #21 and #22 such a hit in 1963.

  If something as highly acclaimed and serious as Watchmen can contain “fun,” what’s going on with today’s books? There’s no shortage of fun in the current Hawkman, and The Terrifics as well as the recent Plastic Man mini-series. However, the Heroes in Crisis mini-series/event is anything but fun. Issue #1 was essentially a bloodbath with 1/2 the issue devoted to Harley Quinn stabbing Booster Gold, repeatedly and unrelentingly.  There’s no fun here.  The tone is somber and the action mired in gratuitous violence.  The basic premise of the series is that sometimes super-heroes need some mental and emotional counseling.  At Sanctuary, the heroes hope to receive that assistance, but there’s a mass murder at the facility that takes the lives of some fan favorite characters, Wally West and Roy Harper.  The premise is about as far from fun as could be imagined.  While it has the potential to be a truly moving story, so far it has felt more like spectacle with little substance.  It would’ve been much more effective to have created an emotional connection with the victims before dispatching them.

Even a moment that could be perceived as fun in issue #2, when Harley Quinn takes out the Trinity, feels awkward and incongruous. Perhaps, one needs to be a full on Harley fanatic to appreciate this moment. To the average reader, it feels incredibly bizarre and absurd considering the accepted portrayal of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Perhaps, there is more going on, but on the surface, it appears to be quite ridiculous considering Harley Quinn’s power set. In the end, it feels out of place and damning of the Trinity. It’s hard to smile with such an indictment of DC’s big three.

The fallout from Heroes in Crisis naturally extends over to Titans.  The team has lost Roy Harper and Wally West, Arsenal and the Flash respectively to the events at Sanctuary.  Additionally, Donna Troy seems to be struggling with alcohol.  And, to add insult to injury (pun intended), Nightwing their leader suffered a gunshot to the head in Batman #55 that has left him with amnesia.  He only remembers his life before his parents were killed.  Dick Grayson has no memory of his life as the original Robin or Nightwing, nor of Bruce Wayne as his adoptive father.  This whole storyline plays like an attempt to remold Dick Grayson’s personality and affect a name change to “Ric” in order the pacify the perpetually immature that can’t handle the traditional nickname for Richard, Dick.  All this trauma leaves very little fun in the Titans book, which is 180 degree turn from where it started out with the pre-Rebirth mini-series, Titans Hunt, and the first story arcs during the Rebirth branding of the DC line.  These stories relied on the nostalgia for the return of the original Teen Titans to the history of the DC Universe and featured friends rediscovering friendships.  Nostalgia is a major fun factor, as is friends reconnecting, either in real life or between beloved fictional characters.

   Looking at the recent Plastic Man mini-series by Gail Simone and Adriana Melo, it’s not hard to see the fun in it. While the character may lend itself to something more humorous, there’s a fun in exploring Plas’s character. Addressing Pado Swakatoon’s identity issues is just as serious as what Tom King is attempting in Heroes in Crisis. The difference seems to be that Simone and Melo find an element of fun embedded in the themes. King appears to have lost this in his Batman run as well. His lead up to the “non-wedding” included some great character moments and “fun”, most significantly the double date with Lois and Clark at the carnival. However, with Batman #50, the “non-wedding” issue, was a great disappointment. Weddings are generally considered to be fun events, even if just in the moment. However, Bruce and Selina never got that far. There’s nothing fun about a wedding that doesn’t happen. Ask any guest….

Let’s look at Hawkman and The Terrifics, two DC Comics series that both exude “fun.” Hawkman not only presents an interesting plot, but builds on the main character, Carter Hall. There’s a lot going on with this character as his history is explored and yet not destroyed. Robert Venditti has managed to build on Hawkman’s past in an interesting way which doesn’t eliminate any aspect of his history. Instead, it embraces it. This is a real triumph! It exudes ��fun.” It doesn’t necessarily require previous knowledge and it doesn’t eliminate ANYTHING that’s come before.

The Terrifics channels the fun and themes that the Fantastic Four originally produced back in 1961 for Marvel Comics. It’s no secret that The Terrifics draws on the chemistry of the Fantastic Four, but more importantly it manages to remain “fun” utilizing the unique personalities of Plastic Man and Metamorpho contrasted against the Mr. Fantastic intellectual analog, Mr. Terrific.

It’s prescient to look at Marvel’s The Immortal Hulk, a series which is not only doing well and receiving positive response, but also serious, somewhat scary and definitely mature. Despite all of these attributes going against it, this series manages to remain “fun.” It is able to channel the original horror element of the basic concept while maintaining a modern sensibility. There is no doubt, however, that Immortal Hulk is fun. Most recently issue #8 has featured a dismembered Hulk still able to provide succor for Bruce Banner. Perhaps, it is the relationship between the two that remains most salient element in the book.

Maybe, the most damning titles in DC’s stable are the Superman books by Brian Michael Bendis. What should be fun is not, and what’s left is sometimes boring and mostly depressing. The Rogol Zaar storyline is progressing too slowly and quite underwhelmingly while the Lois Lane subplot in Action Comics feels completely wrong. The solicits for February’s comics seem to project a future for Jon Kent (Lois and Clark’s son) that has robbed the reader of Jon’s growth and development. Bendis seems to be robbing the reader of understanding how Jon matures and grows, as well as robbing Lois and Clark of raising their child. Not only is this not fun, it is disturbing. If you haven’t dropped Bendis’ Superman books, go ahead and do it now so there may be a chance of salvaging the Kent family. “Fun” is watching the Kent’s raising their son. Depriving them of this opportunity shows a complete lack of respect for the characters, and an agenda of spectacle over character development. There’s enough inherent conflict and story ideas in raising a child with superpowers that Bendis’s contrived plot are not only unnecessary, but uninteresting and depressing- the opposite of “fun.”  Not mention, a status quo that absolutely no one asked for.  There’s an ominous cloud hanging over Superman’s head as Bendis seems to be purposely breaking down the Man of Steel instead of writing legitimately interesting character development.  A mopey, sad Superman is just depressing, and it doesn’t feel genuine when the conflict is so clearly contrived.

It’s not as if there is just one title or character that seems to be suffering from a lack of fun.  The widely reaching Heroes in Crisis event sort of permeates the tenor of the DC Universe.  Interestingly, this atmosphere isn’t isolated in the books that are dealing with the repercussions of Heroes in Crisis directly.  Superman and Nightwing both have some very somber elements that tinge the overall tone of their current storylines and suck the fun out of the drama.  At some point, if the comics you are reading aren’t fun and enjoyable you should drop them. Superman, Action, Titans, Heroes in Crisis, maybe Batman…. Send a message, read what you like…buy what you want to read…don’t be afraid of change….
