A pretty 1927 pale lime green crêpe de chine dancing dress from Atelier Bachwitz, a Jewish-owned Vienna-based publishing house that published exquisite fashion and lifestyle magazines from 1898 to 1938.
Tumblr media
The straight line silhouette is typical of the 1920s, the clever, zigzag piecing of the fabric more common after 1925 as the Art Deco aesthetic took hold. Loose, fluttering bias-cut ruffles became popular right around 1926 and got more and more fluttery as the decade progressed. Bright, cheerful colors in lightweight silks were fashionable the entire decade.
Looking at the image, I believe the skirt flounces are petal-shaped at the bottom, something like quarter-circles in cut, and freehanging from each other. A pain straight slip of matching silk worn underneath would protect modesty as the flounces flared out like flower petals while dancing.

In ballet, each movement is a visual poetry, and the costumes are the pen that writes that poetry in the air. At the heart of this artistic expression is the tutu, an iconic piece that has captivated audiences for generations.

All of these dancewear brands are clogging my kid’s IG feed with their “ambassadors” trying to sell F and TF. This is the dumbest competition for dancewear sales I’ve ever had to endure.

Modelling the newest knitting project (holding my phone like this killed my wrist omg).
Tumblr media
A highly modified version of this pattern from Ravelry. Intended as a stash-buster thing to use up some wool, and also as a way to keep warm during dance class. The light grey portions of this one are the base colour of another dance-related project; a pair of long “yoga socks” also with stripe accents (but in a lighter grey). I’ve been calling it my “raccoon hands” shrug because this early process shot reminded me a bit of those raccoon comics with the little grabby-hands signature.
Tumblr media
This progress pic shows how “sheepy” and coarse the lighter grey wool is, and it only got fuzzier after blocking! I’m wearing it as I type to test it out, it’s a wee bit scratchy. Because this was a stash-buster, the weights were mismatched (dark grey was a sport weight, light grey was a worsted) but they played okay together on the needle at a relaxed gauge and after some gentle blocking.
Tumblr media
The process on this was was a bit…tense? I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough wool so I ended up knitting most of one arm, then most of the other, then swapping back and forth gradually adding rows to the back/shoulder area until I could splice them together. As predicted, I did run out of the dark wool, resulting in that charming stripe down the back. Thankfully I didn’t waste much tying lengths back on; since it was a wool blend, I could “spit splice” the yarn (felt it together into a single strand) so I didn’t have to tie as many knots and weave in as many ends.
Anyway, I’m pleased with the result and looking forward to testing this one out in a chilly dance studio!
