Hello, I just saw a pic of red death in the new restaged tour in Austria and it was definitely more beefed up than in Australia! Wdy think?
I think... the whole Red Death costume in the Restaged Tour has been a mess since the start?
I have heard stories about them trying numerous combos in the original UK version of the tour, one day featuring the original Red Death costume, the other day just the doublet with new breeches, then a version with the old breeches, going back and forth until they landed on the red uniform with the double golden mask splitting down the middle during the scene:
Tumblr media
This is also what was done for the US leg of the tour, except they did only the half-mask without the split-effect:
Tumblr media
Then the Aussie version with a blinged up livré jacket and smoother gold mask, and a Rococoesque wig with side curls and ponytail:
Tumblr media
I have only seen a tiny photo of the Red Death costume as it appears in the current Austrian production. I must admit I thought it was the same as Australia. The main idea looks similar, at least:
Tumblr media
But if anyone has better photos feel free to send me! It would be cool to see how they have reinvented the costume this time around...
ETA: Thank you @noppan for a better photo of Anton Zetterholm's costume in Vienna. To me it appears to be the Aussie u/s costume with an added trim down the front, a bigger cloak, and skipping the rococoesque wig with curls? Left is Aussie u/s Daniel Koek, and right is Anton Zetterholm in Vienna:

gotta say that one recording of les mis on west end from 06/14/2014 is basically my favorite and my comfort watch (i’ve opened it on youtube 14 times this month and actually rewatching it rn) and i feel like we’re not talking about it enough.
jean valjean is perfect there and i mean it in terms of both acting and singing daniel koek is unbelievable (i almost cried when he was singing with tiny cosette when he found her in the woods). javert is extremely angry and hisses all the time and honestly i’m always here for that (also his soliloquy drives me insane every time just. oh my god). fantine is probably the best one i’ve ever seen in my life she portrays the character so beautifully. the thénardiers are literally so funny and their acting in the robbery is impeccable (i’ve rewatched the robbery more than any other part of the musical). enjolras is majestic and grantaire is fucking insanely good like you know how he is right? one moment he’s silly and goofy prankster putting his arms around enj and marius’ shoulders and then he’s literally grasping enjolras during drink with me with tears in his eyes and cracking voice. little cosette’s acting is SO GOOD AND ON POINT IT’S LITERALLY CRAZY??? marius and cosette for once don’t piss me off because they actually suit their roles perfectly and you really believe their acting when you see them. eponine is very edgy and sarcastic and also perfect. gavroche pats javert on a cheek during the barricade and i was speechless about how good his acting is in general. AND ALSO THE ENSEMBLE HELLO???? i always pay close attention to them and here they are doing such an amazing job, all of them (my personal fav is master of the house tbh i’m crazy about this song and scenography in this scene here is hilarious and amazing). i probably missed some details but only because fuuucking hell. fucking hell. please hear me out people this is probably the most important les mis recording in my life.

Finally managed to see Daniel Koek’s Phantom!!!! so here’s some very quick ramblings about it while it is still fresh :) (he played opposite Bridget Costello and Blake Bowden)
under cut bc a little long
His voice was so good omg, not as deep as Raphael but still had the rich feel to it and I could definitely feel the Valjean-ness seeping into his Phantom (he’s also an amazing valjean lol) Acting wise, I found he played a more restrained Phantom at first, really playing the cool, confindent guy in MOTN, and then immediately becoming unhinghed and aggressive during STYDI. I would say he was shouting more, and being more physically aggressive then Josh and Raphael (not a bad thing just something I noticed). Although I thought the immediate contrast between his confidence/ coolness when he was showing Christine his lair, and his subsequent mega-tantrum when she unmasks him was fun haha. also his “you try my patience” in Final Lair was very aggressive I love it lol (reminded me a little of Hugh Panaro tbh) considering his final lair was pretty aggresive his kiss was oddly gentle (see below ramblings)
Definitely more on the aggressive side, as opposed to Josh’s more desperate (i guess you could say?) portrayal. Like it’s hard to word it but i’m sure yall know what I mean haha.
HIS FINAL LAIR KISS............... :SOB: He did the little flail that most Phantoms tend to do but then he almost proceeded to embrace her back, and instead of pushing Christine roughly away when the music stops (as seems to be the regular blocking as both Josh and Raphael do this) he remains embraced with her until a bit after the music ends, then gently cups her face/ wipes her tears before gently pulling away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you know what im just gonna post some gif snippets of the video bc everyone should see it :sob:

Although I feel like you've seen every Phantom, Christine, and Raoul, can I just ask if there are actors and actresses you haven't seen a bootleg of but want to?
Oh, so many, there are lots of cast members who weren't recorded, or fully recorded, and who I would love to see or hear. A short list (and I do mean this is short, because I basically eliminated anybody who had a full bootleg of them, whether audio or video, solely for the sake of my sanity):
Phantoms: Andre Schwartz, Juan Pablo Skrt, Nicholas Nkuna, Kalle Sepp, Hugo Laporte, Nikolai Dogramadzhiev, Vladimir Grudkov, Momchil Stepanov, Joel Zerpe, Daniel Koek
Christines: Maria Kesselman, Raissa Katona, Tua Aberg, Johanne Brochmann, Lori Broderick, Gay Willis, June Crowley, Tamra Haydn, Amy Jo Arrington, Beverley Worboys, Annalene Beechey, Susanne Elmark, Agnete Munk Rasmussen, Lana English, Amy Hudson Holder, Mona Botha, Magdalene Minnaar, Mercedesz Csampai, Tereza Marshall, Mirjana Matić, Anne-Marine Suire, Micaela Sjöstedt, Hanna Ulvan, Mira Ormala, Charlotte Brænna, Vesela Delcheva, Raquel Paulin, Cassandra Lemoine, Sara Ollinen
Raouls: Brennan Holder, Tobias Ahlsell, Jonathan Böiers
And probably many, many more.

what on earth is going on with the aus red death wig I thought it was just loose curls at the back like the US tour but now briefly seeing the back (worn by daniel koek) it seems like a really stiff thick curl?? which looks .. much worse?

“Dawn of Anguish,” “Second Attack/Death of Gavroche” and “The Final Battle,” London, 2014. Anton Zetterholm as Enjolras, Rob Houchen as Marius, Daniel Koek as Jean Valjean, Max Robson as Gavroche, Adam Linstead as Grantaire, Tam Mutu as Javert.
189 years ago today, the barricades fell, so it seems only fitting to relive the tragedy through its most famous fictionalized portrayal.
Last year I shared a video of this same cast from 2013, albeit with a different Gavroche and without the battle’s aftermath. This performance, which allegedly was Anton Zetterholm’s last before he left the show, is just as strong as the earlier one, although unfortunately the camera goes in and out of focus.
Anton’s Enjolras might not be the most physically imposing Enjolras, but his shining blond hair, his chiseled face, the cream and steel combined within his voice, and his demeanor that blends stern, quiet dignity with revolutionary ardor, he’s faithful to Hugo’s vision of his angelic “marble lover of liberty.” His opening lines are moving, as his hushed “The people have not stirred...” comes as close to expressing despair as Enjolras can allow himself, but then his fierce “The people have not heard...” reinforces his unshakable courage. His “Let others rise...” is excellent too, with a magnificent final note on “...is FREE!”
Max is a vivid, vulnerable yet fierce Gavroche, although his drawn-out stiffening and collapse as he dies is slightly unconvincing.
“The Final Battle” is powerful from beginning to end. First there’s the mute, dumbstruck grief of the revolutionaries after Gavroche’s death – I especially like that the only significant movement is the overwhelmed Grantaire sinking into his chair – which erupts into wild cries of anguish and rage when the offstage officer delivers his final message. Then comes Enjolras’s thrilling last words and brief yet moving last moments with Marius and Grantaire. I notice that after “Let others rise...” he never fires another bullet at the enemy, but is already reaching for the flag to wave it when Marius is shot. He was ready to accept death then and there, but then his love for his friends makes him delay it for just a moment to run to the seemingly-dying Marius’s side and to share a handshake with Grantaire before his last stand. As in the 2013 video, he and Adam’s Grantaire recreate “Orestes Fasting and Pylades Drunk” as closely as Nunn and Caird’s staging allows, with Adam reaching the top of the barricade as Anton is still standing and making himself visible to the enemy just behind him, raising his wine jug in defiance.
As always, the tableau of Enjolras’s body on the barricade is heartbreakingly beautiful, with only a small trickle of blood from his mouth. The fact that this performance includes Javert in the tableu by having him stand at the top of the barricade (a choice which, from what I’ve read, has been used on and off in London over the years) adds a biting layer of social commentary, emphasizing that it was “the Law” that killed Enjolras and Gavroche.
Tam’s Javert always seems to have been an especially driven, wolfish one, and this scene is no exception. We can see his desperation as he spots the sewer grate, struggles in vain to lift it, listens for the sound of human movement below it, and then exits with an ominous growl of “Valjean!”

Hi!! Do you know in POTO Australia does the alt Christine have a set performance day? Also is there any word if Josh also gets a show off with one of the u/s phantoms going on?
As far as I know, there are no set dates for the alternate Christine right now. I do know Bridget went on as Christine on Wednesday last week, but I think we’ll have to wait if she will perform tomorrow. I figure Bridget will do 2 shows a week, especially with the 8/9 show weeks. She isn’t as active on social media as the others, but hopefully she’ll announce when she is on.
As for the Phantom, I really don’t know. Josh hasn’t announced anything about days off. Your best shot is to keep an eye on the Instagram of Raphael Wong and Daniel Koek. I am sure they’ll announce it when they will be on as the Phantom.
Sorry I couldn’t give any more information, but I hope this helps a little.
