Midnight Pals: Whale tale
Daniel Kraus: Submitted for the approval of the midnight society, i call this the tale of the whale Stephen King: sounds like a whale of a tale! Kraus: Kraus: yeah actually that's accurate Kraus: it IS a whale of a tale if you think about it Kraus: i'm gonna start using that
Kraus: its about a diver in seach of his dead father Kraus: who gets swallowed by a whale Kraus: which allows him to come to terms with things Kraus: men would literally get eaten by a whale to avoid going to therapy
Kraus: so he gets eaten by a whale while he's looking for his father King: looking for his father in a whale? haha who's his father, gepetto? King: haha get it? cuz Barker: steve shut up Barker: you got lucky with that "whale of a tale" line, lightning's not gonna strike twice
King: hey clive that's not fair, you tell jokes all the time Barker: yeah but mine are good King: well gee King: i guess i'm no good at whale jokes King: more like a whaleFAIL King: oh!!! and I'm back in the saddle! Barker: no you're not steve
Kraus: so this guy gets eaten by a whale Kraus: now he only has an hour to both resolve his childhood trauma and escape digestion King: you know if i was swallowed by a whale, i think i could escape King: i don't think it would be too hard
Kraus: oh you think you could escape from a whale? oh do you? how would you do that steve King: i'd climb out the blowhole King: i'm pretty sure that's how its done Kraus: this isn't a cartoon steve!! King: no no i'm pretty sure i saw it in a King: uhh King: documentary
Kraus: the inside of a whale is not just some big open space where the stomach connects to the blowhole! Barker: no i'm pretty sure steve's right Kraus: oh NOW you're on his side? Barker: i'm always on the side of truth Poe: clive don't be an instigator
Frank Belknap Long: hey i have a question Long: is this vore? Kraus: Kraus: Kraus: what? Long: cuz i only like soft vore Barker: fuckin coward
Dean Koontz: i don't like this story Koontz: it makes me think about what if I got eaten by a whale! Poe: daniel do you have anything more appropriate for dean Kraus: i have this story about teddy bears Poe: well that sounds lovely Kraus: no Kraus: it's not

Just finished Whalefall by Daniel Kraus and DAMN was it amazing.
Tumblr media
I saw it as a recommendation on a horror lit forum some months back, and immediately put a hold on it at the library because I was looking for some claustrophobic or oceanic horror. Turns out it’s about a diver from SoCal, which, hey, I’m that, who gets swallowed by a whale, which, hey wtf?
What ensued was some of the most unique, claustrophobic scenes with incredibly realistic scuba diving and (presumably) realistic whale guts doing what whale guts do. Usually, the immersion is broken when a book uses scuba diving due to some small inaccuracy that most people wouldn’t even think to include, but the only time I surfaced (hehe) was to point out everything I recognized as familiar. Amazing prose, fantastic planting and payoff 10/10 no notes. (Ok some notes, but any issue I had was subjective gripes that don’t take away from the effectiveness of the story. )
If you’re even a little bit interested, absolutely read the book, it’s absolutely worth it.

You ever finish reading a piece of literature that has touched you so deeply and so powerfully that you don't know what to do with yourself afterward?
You're wandering around your home guided by sheer muscle memory because you don't really see anything, your eyes are turned inside out to read your thoughts and your mouth is chattering to your brain because there's no one else to talk to about it and you're dying to sit down and vivisect it—yes, vivisect, it's still very much alive—with a friend because it feels like the only way you can bleed off the pressure (the beauty) that has been pumped into your skull? Your cranial sutures are bulging at the seams and all you can do is lie down and hope your brain will be able to digest this 1000-course meal overnight.

Have you been chasing the sinking feeling in your stomach that you got from watching the vore scene in NOPE (2022)? Did it take several days for you to sleep through the night after because you kept waking up and thinking about that horrible claustrophobia of being buffeting by a creature’s stomach lining as it began to digest you, but it was also your favorite movie of last year?
Well friends, have I got a book for you.

Ooo its one of the books Gen had for her book club that she raved about. I can't remember if Jared was involved with this one too or not, I know sometimes he does.
Very cool! I'm pretty sure Jared read and promoted the book as well, but I think this just illustrates that they know a marketable product when they see one!

Halloween Day Nine
Hi all (four of you?), sorry I missed yesterday so today we get a double event.
Tumblr media
Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water) has written some of the most grotesque yet compelling, and at the same time oddly touching books I have read in the last ten years. The Ghost That Ate Us, which touches on many of the curses of the modern America, particularly in the Midwest, is possibly the most so.
With elements of horror, true crime, social criticism, pop culture exploration, and work place politics, The Ghost That Ate Us was one of the most compelling and upsetting books I have read in the last year and is really not for everyone.
Please keep in mind that while there is an element of it that might be considered fatphobic if looked at in a surface manner, Kraus is a deeper writer than that. To me it is clear he is more concerned with the idea of the relentless, pleasure-less consumption that is forced on us by the grinding force of capitalism, and that comes with being trapped in a life where your real needs are forever unsatisfied than with stigmatizing anyone's size. However, it is an aspect of the book that may be offensive to readers, so please be advised.
From the cover :
"On June 1, 2017, six people were killed at a Burger City franchise off I-80 near Jonny, Iowa. It was the bizarre and gruesome conclusion to nine months of alleged paranormal activity at the fast-food joint—events popularly known as “the Burger City Poltergeist.”
The story inspired Facebook memes, Twitter hashtags, Buzzfeed listicles, Saturday Night Live sketches, and more. But the case was never much more than a punchline…until bestselling writer Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water, The Living Dead) decided to head to Iowa to dig up what really happened.
Presented here is the definitive story of “the most exhaustively documented haunting in history,” including—for the first time ever—interviews with every living survivor of the tragedy.
The employees of Burger City were a family. They loved one another. At least, at the beginning.
But love can make you do unspeakable things."
Let me know if you would like to be added to the taglist!

Have you read...
note: If you did not finish but feel you read enough to form an opinion, you may choose a ‘Yes’ option instead of 'Partly' (e.g., Yes, I didn’t like it). Similarly, if you’ve never heard of a book until now but formed an opinion from this post, you may wish to select a “no” option e.g., “No, but I want to.”

Grave-robbing. What kind of monster would do such a thing? It's true that Leonardo da Vinci did it, Shakespeare wrote about it, and the resurrection men of nineteenth-century Scotland practically made it an art. But none of this matters to Joey Crouch, a sixteen-year-old straight-A student living in Chicago with his single mom. For the most part, Joey's life is about playing the trumpet and avoiding the daily humiliations of high school.      Everything changes when Joey's mother dies in a tragic accident and he is sent to rural Iowa to live with the father he has never known, a strange, solitary man with unimaginable secrets. At first, Joey's father wants nothing to do with him, but once father and son come to terms with each other, Joey's life takes a turn both macabre and exhilarating.      Daniel Kraus's masterful plotting and unforgettable characters make Rotters a moving, terrifying, and unconventional epic about fathers and sons, complex family ties, taboos, and the ever-present specter of mortality.
