Alberta's opposition NDP is calling on all United Conservative MLAs to condemn a phone call between the premier and outspoken street pastor Artur Pawlowski.
The NDP calls Pawlowski an "extremist" who should not have been given time to speak to Danielle Smith, let alone get a phone call with the premier.
Pawlowski recorded a phone conversation between him and the premier in January, weeks ahead of a criminal trial he was set to face on charges stemming from the Coutts border blockade.
"I've been watching your public advocacy for many years," Smith can be heard saying at the beginning of the recording. [...]

Premier Danielle Smith says members of the Alberta legislature, including cabinet ministers, are not free to talk to accused people about their criminal court cases, but her call to a man facing charges was OK.
Smith, asked Thursday whether her phone call to Calgary street pastor Artur Pawlowski represents a change in government policy, replied that the long-standing firewall separating politicians and the justice system remains in place.
"There’s no change of policy; it's what it has always been: that the Crown prosecutors and the judicial system operate independently," Smith told reporters in Brooks, Alta., a city in her constituency of Brooks-Medicine Hat.
Smith reiterated that she did nothing irregular on the 11-minute call, which took place in early January, concerning Pawlowski’s looming trial related to the COVID-19 border protest at Coutts, Alta., in early 2022.
The call was leaked to the opposition NDP, which played it for reporters more than a week ago. On the call, Smith is heard telling Pawlowski that the charges against him are politically motivated while offering to make inquiries on his behalf and report back to him.
Smith also shares details with him about internal disagreements over Crown strategy and commiserates with him when he accuses the Crown of trying to overwhelm his lawyers and drain his wallet through a late-day “document dump.”
Legal experts say the call was a clear violation of the democratic guardrail that keeps politicians from having a say in who gets charged and how cases are prosecuted.
Smith has said that she promised in her United Conservative Party leadership campaign last year to explore amnesty for people accused of violating COVID-19 health restrictions. She has also said that she was later advised by officials that her office did not have the power to grant amnesties and that the cases must play out independently, and she accepted that advice.
"My job as a politician is to consult with a broad range of people and raise their concerns, and then ultimately, in this particular case, take the advice of my justice minister," Smith said.
“The conversations I had with my justice officials took place several months ago. The court cases still haven’t come down. We’re still waiting.”
Opposition NDP Leader Rachel Notley told reporters in Calgary that Smith continues to dig a hole for herself on the issue. “What we heard from the premier today is that she was actually given advice by justice officials to stay out of the court and justice process concerning a whole range of people who had been charged,” Notley said.
"Having been given that advice, (Smith) decided she was above the law, and she did in fact engage directly, as was also heard on the call advising Pawlowski that she was regularly questioning justice officials about their pursuit of cases relating to violations of COVID-19 restrictions.
Last Saturday, on her call-in radio show, Smith declined to answer when asked if she regretted the call with Pawlowski, saying that she has lots of conversations with people and was surprised the call with Pawlowski was recorded.
At a news conference earlier this week, Smith announced that, because she is contemplating a lawsuit, she will stay silent on the advice of her lawyer.
A notice of defamation letter sent from lawyers on behalf of Smith calls on the CBC to retract and apologize for a January story. The story stated a member of her staff sent emails to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service challenging how it was handling court cases from the Coutts blockade.
Smith has said a review found no evidence of contact between her office and the prosecution service. The CBC has said it stands by its reporting.
The notice of defamation letter gives the CBC until April 28 to retract its article and apologize or face potential legal action, which could be days before a writ drop for the provincial election.
Smith has long been critical of COVID-19 masking, gathering, and vaccine mandate rules, questioning whether the measures were needed to fight the pandemic.

Pastor Pawlowski is traveling through America on his Courageous Faith tour, and on June 15, he spoke to an overflowing crowd in Manhattan. "Good people don't obey the order of tyrants," he bellowed, standing in front of an American flag. "If you're not pushing evil away, you are part of the problem."
As the audience listened, transfixed, Pawlowski described his year-long persecution by authorities in Calgary, where his Cave of Adullam Church is located. In the name of COVID restrictions, police routinely swarmed his church services, photographing every woman and child. "This is what the communists did in Poland. They would send you pictures of your wife and children to intimidate you," he said. "The police also gave me tickets for millions of dollars. I told them, 'Give me a billion dollars! Think big.'"
The obvious absurdities of COVID restrictions infuriate Pawlowski, who sees an evil agenda behind the contradictions. "In Canada to this day, prayer is illegal. But you can go to IKEA and abortion clinics and marijuana stores. I could bring my whole church to IKEA and have services there. But if one person comes to my church, I can be arrested. This is not about a virus! It's about control."
On Easter weekend, authorities sent 100 police officers and 52 police cars to stop the church service. After Pawlowski tossed them out, they followed him home and arrested him on the highway. They chained him, tortured him, and threw him into solitary confinement where he slept on a concrete floor. Reminder: This is Canada we're talking about.
Drawing inspiration from Joan of Arc and biblical figures like Daniel and Esther, Pawlowski spoke of how his faith strengthened him to fight for the future. "Why are young people turning to drugs and suicide? Because not enough people are giving them hope. There are lots of evil people in government. They're destroying the next generation, putting muzzles on your kids like a dog. Telling them you have no identity, no voice. You are a slave."
The more Pawlowski bellowed with rage, the more the audience cheered. There was a large contingent from the Polish community who learned of the event from Polish social media. "He's risking his life and his family's safety," a Polish woman told me. "He speaks for millions. People are sitting home watching TV, but he's an action man." David, a young man from China, saw a possible Chinese influence behind the assault on Pawlowski. "I went to school in Canada," he said. "There's a lot of connection to China."
Pawlowski, who's out on bail, faces four years in prison. His friend, Pastor Tim Stephens, who was recently arrested in front of his seven sobbing children, also faces an uncertain future. "This is your destiny, America, if you don't fight back," warned Pawlowski. "If you don't rise up like I did and say, 'No! Get out!,' you will not have freedom."

Alberta Opposition NDP Leader Rachel Notley says Premier Danielle Smith must explain whether she shares the “extremist views” of Calgary street preacher Artur Pawlowski and those of “her key support group” Take Back Alberta.
“Albertans deserve to know whether they are on the verge of selecting a premier whose views are deeply extreme and offside with the opinions of the vast majority of Albertans,” Notley said at a news conference in Grande Prairie, Alta., on Thursday.
“A number of the views espoused by Art Pawlowski, as well as many of the folks within Take Back Alberta who support him — who were (also) critical to Danielle Smith becoming leader of the (United Conservative Party) — are very concerning.”
Smith has said the writ will be dropped in just over two weeks for a provincial election on May 29. [...]

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she's under investigation by the provincial ethics commissioner into whether she interfered in the administration of justice about a COVID-19 prosecution.
The statement that Smith welcomes the investigation, will cooperate and is confident the probe will determine she has done nothing wrong.
Smith has faced renewed accusations of interference in the justice system after a leaked phone call was released almost two weeks ago in which she is heard discussing an active criminal case with the accused.
On the call, Smith shared details of an internal disagreement over Crown case strategy with Calgary street pastor Artur Pawlowski as the case.
Smith is heard promising to make inquiries on Pawlowski's behalf and report back to him while also telling him the charges against him are politically motivated.
Smith has defended the call, saying while politicians are not free to contact criminal accused about active cases, it's her job as an elected official to listen and act on concerns from the public.
