Note
He was in this quirky little seen movie called Danny Deckchair where he plays an Australian who’s just passing through life until he makes a bet to float away on a deckchair with balloons and lands in a small town where he becomes a pillar of the community and falls in love with the woman whose backyard he lands in. It’s really sweet and the cinematography makes it look like a Disney Channel movie from 2004 which only adds to the charm
That sounds so charming!

Even More Reasons to Love Miranda Otto
I found some brilliant quotes from the Special Features on Danny Deckchair. The entire production team, cast, and crew just gushes about Miranda Otto for ten minutes:
Lizzie Bryant, Co-Producer: “In Miranda Otto we saw someone who was both earthy and delicate; a wonderful actress with such comedic potential, and together [Miranda and Rhys] are just fantastic. We were extraordinarily lucky. The two of them have the most amazing onscreen chemistry together. They have almost an ethereal chemistry about them.”
Rhys Ifans, “Danny”: “ When you’re working with actresses of [Miranda’s] caliber it just raises your performance.”
Jeff Balsmeyer, Writer/Director: “She’s amazing. She would ask questions and then, boom! She nailed it. The most spontaneous, sparky creature on earth. But she’s also capable of being extraordinarily beautiful.”
Andrew Mason, Producer: “She has a miraculous laugh. It’s truly wonderful and almost anyone who hears it immediately wants to be part of whatever the fun is. It’s wicked fun that she’s hinting at when she laughs.”

Danny just took off in his flying deckchair and I’m beginning to think this is an actual Wizard of Oz parody. Glenda is a suspiciously close name to Glinda.

Caz’s Top Ten Australian Movies
Because I felt guilty that no local films were in my other top 10 post lol. Our industry is constantly besieged by Hollywood and uh... we tend to make boring AF movies. So when we make something a little different I get crazily excited.
Tumblr media
Mad Max 2 (1981)
Honestly, does this movie need an introduction? Okay, overseas folk called it “The Road Warrior” but they tried to sell the blu-ray here under that name and no one bought it so they repackaged it lol. The first Mad Max was sooo low budget (the director’s own van got smashed up in one scene!) and the sci-fi setting was only vaguely hinted at. But ONE scene (JUST ONE) inspired an entire franchise (Saw). So how could a sequel be even better?
Oh trust me... it is. The sequel finally delivers on the promise of the first (MOAR apocalypse, MOAR and BETTER car shenanigans). Bonus Zhaan from Farscape.
Tumblr media
Gallipoli (1981)
Fuck, this movie is a gut punch. But a good gut punch. Just like the actual Gallipoli campaign did for a very young nation, this movie gave us Aussies a sense of self. And the acting... first rate. In the early 1980s, we actually liked to claim Mel Gibson as one of ours. But then he went back to where he was born lol...
Tumblr media
The Man from Snowy River (1982)
The Australian Epic. It’s got the setting. It’s steeped in history before it even starts (based on a poem by Banjo Paterson, aka The Greatest White Male Poet in Australian History but I digress). And it’s got romance and an underdog. ;) Bonus horses and Kirk Douglas for some reason.
Tumblr media
Crocodile Dundee (1986)
This is what happens when a comedian in a tourism campaign inspires a movie. And I effin’ love it. There’s just too many good one-liners lol. This is probably the start of Australians trolling people with ridiculous stories about what it’s like to live here. The sequel is also good fun. ;D
Tumblr media
Strictly Ballroom (1992)
Idk why but when I was a kid I watched this HUNDREDS of times. Maybe because I was so impressed with the bit depicted in the gif above. xD Typical underdog/romance movie, but with an undeniable Australian flavour (our identity is formed A LOT by immigration).
Tumblr media
Paperback Hero (1999)
Pre-Wolverine Hugh Jackman is a truck driver who secretly writes romance novels. ENOUGH SAID.
Tumblr media
Moulin Rouge! (2000)
Our beloved Baz’s last decent film (since this movie he hasn’t made anything as truly fantastic as this or the rest of his Red Curtain trilogy). I can sing entire songs off the soundtrack. And I had a raging crush on Ewan McGregor at the time.
Tumblr media
Danny Deckchair (2003)
Some dude uses balloons to fly away from his problems and lands in a small town. Romance ensues. Rhys Ifans and Miranda Otto, folks, two of my eternal faves. It’s very sweet. Uh... yeah. It’s just fluff. That’s all. But you won’t regret it.
Tumblr media
Red Hill (2010)
An Australian neo-western starring Ryan Kwanten. I remember disliking him on Home & Away but I also disliked another cast member on that show called Chris Hemsworth. Oh man. Kid!Caz did not appreciate - um, talent. Anyhoo, RK’s acting is freaking fantastic in this and it deals with a small town’s racist past/present.
Tumblr media
Griff the Invisible (2010)
Ryan Kwanten had a great year in 2010 (he was also on some TV show overseas haha). This is a sorta-superhero/almost-magical-realism movie with so much heart it’ll make yours burst. <3 Superbly edited. Adorkable. Romantic. Despite not being the “best” movie on my list, it’s probably my favourite.
And I always smile when I wait for the light rail at Central station, knowing that they filmed there.
