If I was to choose single most f-ed up thing in Asoiaf, it would be whole thing about Danny Flint song. I have taken folklore studies, I know European folklore(s) well enough to confidently say: it’s total bullshit and pure rapexploitation on author’s part.
Folklore has its universal rules, universal narratives it uses to weave songs and stories. A woman pretending to be a man is one of those, and not once does it end with rape, much less gang rape. It has four possible outcomes: never discovered, discovered and rewarded, dead on discovery (usually via birth) or discovered and killed. Usually the latter is framed as defiance on her part - she goads her killer, shaming him and emasculating, and he is the villain of the story, a weakling unable to bear being bested by a woman.
If we play by the rules of folklore logic, Danny Flint would end either with her made single female lord-commander, or her killer being exposed and punished and she hailed as a hero.
Rape is never the endgame in folklore. It is only used either passingly in historical songs among other enemy atrocities, or as a starting point of revenge ballads. Never. and I can’t stress it enough, is rape used as comeuppance for a woman. Death is.
You can say “oh, but the song is not about rape, rape is what really happened”, but nope, the song is source material for those talking about this story. Just another grrm’s rapexploitation moment. Not the first, neither the last.

Legendary Heroes GIF Sets → Danny Flint
“Did Mance ever sing of Brave Danny Flint?” “Not as I recall. Who was he?” “A girl who dressed up like a boy to take the black. Her song is sad and pretty. What happened to her wasn’t.” In some versions of the song, her ghost still walked the Nightfort.

using the Coldhands’s Longsword is Dark Sister theory to support the Coldhands = Danny Flint theory, because danny was a girl who became a black brother of the watch, a dark sister

Ok, ive gotta hear the whole Coldhands=Danny Flint theory bc its been bouncing off the walls of my brain since i saw that art. Like, i LOVE Danny Flint and I’m obsessed w her and i wish she had more of a presence in the story. I want it to be true even if its just a “wouldnt this be cool if it happened” theory
Hey, love to see someone else loving Danny Flint that much!
So basically the whole theory is about how Danny Flint could have been the one who became Coldhands because it vaguely lines up with both the timeline and their stories as well as some of the things that were said about Coldhands (and also because it would be awesome):
The timeline parallel can be summed up quickly by him being described as having been "killed [...] long ago" by Leaf, which technically makes him too old to be any of the dead brothers of the nights watch that we met in the time the story took place, while at the same time there are very few historical night's watch members that we actually know anything about, Danny Flint being one of them.
The story part goes a little bit deeper; we know that Coldhands was once a brother of the night's watch, that he was killed by the wights, and that he was raised from the dead, presumably by the children of the forest - he also knows about the black gate under the Nightfort, wanders the lands beyond the wall alone with only his elk, and considers the night's watch men that him and Bran encounter foes. Danny Flint joined the night's watch disguised as a man and faced incredibly cruel consequences for it by her "brothers", who are implied to have murdered her as well, is well known as a legendary figure of songs for her bravery, and she served at the Nightfort, which her ghost is said to haunt until this day.
Now the connection here is really far fetched but there are definitely some interesting parallels that keep me up at night:
-Coldhands knowing about the black gate under the Nightfort even though no living man remembers, Danny Flints ghost haunting it still, and the gate being what connects the Nightfort to the world beyond. Maybe her ghost is still there, and now on the other side
-Danny Flint being an outsider in the brotherhood and trying to fit in standing in direct contrast to Coldhands staying on his own, now an outsider on the other side of the world, but maybe having found peace in his existence among the dead and inhuman, as opposed to the cruel side he saw of humanity
-Her ghost remembering what her brothers did to her and Coldhands seeing the ones he meets as his enemies, with the exception of Sam, whom he found protecting someone else who does not belong with the night's watch
-Coldhands having been killed by "them", whether "they" were the others, the wights, or even who they once were - we literally don't know
To be fair, there's not really proof that any of this is related at all, but there isn't really anything speaking against it either? And yes, it's definitely a theory falling in the "wouldn't it be cool if it happened" category, but literally it would be so cool like. imagine
(Also I should definitely mention that I'm not the one who came up with it and I'm not even sure if its an "official" or even well known theory, so most of this comes from what I read elsewhere, my own thoughts, or possibilities I talked about with friends but its such an intriguing theory nonetheless!)

I find it interesting that Arya, in her first few chapters of clash of kings, is essentially, while not actually saying the vow, part of the Night’s watch. Yoren is her mentor and he is teaching her said values. I think it is a pretty interesting part of her journey (although a short one) because she does learn a lot about the wall and the Night’s watch and it links her to the north and its politics very quickly in clash.
It also allow her to see for herself how much the watch has fallen (and what Jon must be going through) but also give her a sense of responsability because she does respect Yoren and see him as a good man (debatable he hit still she was bleeding but i’m not the character).
Also, the parallel between Arya, a girl hiding as a (potential) brother of the Night’s watch to save herself from someone else and if someone figure out she is a girl, she’ll be brought back to the Lannisters and could be raped or just murdered by the others (potential) brothers with Danny Flint, a girl hiding as a brother of the Night’s watch to save herself from someone else and when someone figure out she is a girl, she is raped and murdered by the others feels pretty obvious but It’s also interesting.

The amount of victim blaming Danny Flint receives for what happened to her. A girl canonically got raped and murdered and the first thing asoiaf enjoyers do is call her dumb for entering the Night’s Watch since it’s full of criminals and rapist.
1)Multiple men chose to rape and murder her that is not her fault in any way shape or form. She could’ve waltzed into Castle Black naked as her name day it still would be the men’s fault.
2)I know asoiaf readers don’t really like to think sometimes but it’s also canon that westerosi either don’t care about the NW or think of it as a honorable calling. Danny just wanted to protect Westeros and it’s people.
Anyway I have nothing more to add it’s all just very disturbing.

as we all recover in the wake of that devastatingly AMAZING chapter (bless your brains seriously), could I ask if yall have any crossover friendship hcs with the cast of the anthology? like Tom and Andy are the brotp of brotps, but I think it'd be cute if Lincoln and Imogen bonded over sketchy parents and getting their powers from rituals. Or Abel and Lucas being adorable nerds. Or Ava and Amalia talking about weapons yes 💜
I am a huge fan of a Lincoln and Imogen friendship. They never interact, but I imagined it one time and it was SO cute, like, bonding over terrible parents, Imogen just being so sweet and kind and understanding and offering the kind of unconditional friendship Lincoln needs, Lincoln being protective and validating of her feelings... idk man their friendship would be so wholesome.
I think Danni and Joss would get along really well. Just like, both are protective, both take things seriously. During a crisis, the two would just be completely in sync and understand each other without having to say anything, and their mutual respect just 📈📈📈
Tom and Abel... I'd love to see them interact. They're both such cute nerds, I feel like they'd have a lot of similar interests and a very compatible sense of humor. Tom would go on about mechanics and robotics while Abel is like "ooooh" like, he doesn't understand much since it's not his area but he picks up the concepts quickly and thinks it's amazing, and vice versa with Abel explaining things about history and artifacts.
Amalia and Ava yes I think you're onto something.... Amalia would show off her skills and Ava would be amazed, and Ava in turn shows off her spells and how it works, and Amalia is thoroughly intrigued.
