I’ve had Dantalion x William on my mind since finishing the manga and I’m still just kind of blown away by the turn around it managed to do for me... For the first 30 chapters or so I really wasn’t feeling it, beyond this feeling of wanting Dantalion to be happy, so shipping it just in the sense of ‘if he wants to be with William then I want him to be with William’, but not really envisioning it as something that could realistically happen.

Little did I realize. That we were playing the long game. It was a slow burn all along...

I just keep thinking about the progression of William’s relationship with both Dantalion and Sitri, but particularly Dantalion, with finding them a nuisance and wishing for them to disappear and leave him alone, and looking forward to the times where he can get away from them. To noticing when they’re not around, because he has become used to their presence, to the time they all spend together. The moment where he learns about how demons go into hibernation to preserve their life span, usually for hundreds of years, and just suddenly being hit with the realization that Dantalion and Sitri and Camio could just suddenly disappear from his life and he would never get to see them again- the change, from this being something he wouldn’t mind to being something that troubles him, disturbs him, saddens him.

William gets what he wants in terms of being left alone, having these strange demons who invaded his life suddenly take their leave and leaving him to carry on with his normal life. He gets his house and things back, he gets his uncle back, things are seemingly perfectly back to the way they had been before he summoned Dantalion... And now that he has it, he can’t help but think back to the others. That scene where he’s eating dinner and wishing the others could be there, and just has a separate panel for Dantalion............. Up until now a lot of the relationship between William and Dantalion has seemed mostly one sided, from Dantalion’s perspective, with William softening a bit but never being on quite the same level of caring for him. And now, after a distance has come between them, William is finaly acknowledging that Dantalion means something to him, something more than he’s let himself think before now.

When he’s alone in his room, thinking about the others, he finally admits to himself that these times he’s seen as a nuisance in the moment were fun to him. Now that they’re gone, he realizes he’s taken them for granted! He had these people who cared for him, who wanted to be with him, even beyond him being the Elector, and he’s finally letting himself acknowledge it, because he’s had it taken away from him against his wishes- wishes he probably didn’t even realize he had! And that right there is just. Absolutely my shit. A character becoming accustomed to someone and taking their presence for granted, only to realize how much they mean to them when their status quo is changed? Being forced to confront how much that person means to them? All this time I was looking for that dynamic with Dantalion and Sytry, hoping for a rivals to friends dynamic, when this whole time they were leading up to it with William and Dantalion....

And then the scene in his room. It’s just so... tender? Romantic? Shockingly, blatantly so, for a manga that seemed like it was mostly just baiting fans? Dantalion appearing at the balcony with a gentle smile because he wanted to see William and because he sensed William wanted to see him? William blushing when he says it? Dantalion finally confessing about his identity and what happened between him and Solomon. The revelation of just how much William remembered about their relationship, about what Solomon did so that Dantalion wouldn’t have to be alone. William asking Dantalion what he wants, taking his hand and putting it to his face, and Dantalion placing the other hand up to cup William’s face. Crying as he says he wants to stay by William’s side and just continue being with him ;; William looking up at him with such a hopeful smile, as he asks him to stay, promises to never make him leave his home again...

The sheer romance of it. The softness of this scene. The pain of Dantalion saying it’s too late! The tragedy of it all, of them finally confessing their mutual feelings of wanting to be with each other, of wanting to go back to the good old days- of William only just now realizing how good he had it, only for it to seem lik it’s gone for good...

And then William actively chasing after Dantalion! Making an effort to find a way to get to him and save him from what he’s going to do! This whole series William has been either trying to avoid his role in all this, or outright rejecting it, and Dantalion’s protection. And now he is taking an active role, trying to protect Dantalion. It’s so. Just such good character development. The development of their relationship is so well paced and so natural and I’m still just sitting here absorbing it all, taking it in. I guess it helps that I took a pretty long gap between reading the first third of the manga and the second two thirds, but it still just amazes me how well developed this all was and how well they sold me on this turn in William’s growth and acknowledging his feelings and how he affects others. I went from really not caring for hi as a protagonist to dearly loving him, and I feel like Dantalion/William is going to last as one of my top OTPs.

If there was anything William hated most in the world, it was having to rely on Dantalion. Never in his life had the young Elector been forced to rely on anyone other than himself - not for his achievements in school, not his social status, and certainly not his safety. Even when he was made aware that he was a target of both Heaven and Hell, he remained firm in his standing that he would do things by his merit, on his terms. He had stood up against demons and angels alike, though powerless before them. He had quelled his fear and commanded peace between political opponents and faced the ambiguity of his not so distant future.

                 But on occasion, situations did become perilous, too much so for himself to handle alone. When those times came, those under Solomon’s control came to his aid. More often than not, Dantalion rushed to his side at the most crucial of moments, defending his life without care of his own.

                 He hated it. William hated those times. He hated how completely helpless he was, how despite his best efforts he could not gain the means to defend himself. He was forced to play the role of a damsel in a fairytale, needing a brave knight to come save him. By whatever damned god there was, he despised it. But most of all he loathed how he loved those times all the same, how he felt elated apart from his grief. The man whom had started out being a troublesome, overzealous oaf who knew no boundaries of personal space had lived up to his promise of protection.

                 It held true now, as it did always.

                 William spared a glance at the smouldering corpse of the demonic thing - he honestly hadn’t bothered to learn any of these creatures names - that had attacked him. As expressed numerous times, things were getting worse before there would be any hint of getting better. The creature had made it’s move when he had been walking alone about campus, making a simple routine check expected of him as prefect. The result was a brief chase and yet another swift rescue. Absently, the boy pondered whether or not Dantalion spied on him readily to always come in the nick of time.

                 He was holding him again, having tugged him close by the shoulders. He was speaking loudly as he always did, but William wasn’t listening. He continued to stare at the monstrosity until it rotted away into dust, only to lower his eyes once it was gone. A weak demon, he imagined, but if not for the man gripping his shoulders and bantering on at him now then he could have perished. So much for the great descendent of Solomon. He snorted softly - how easy it could have been. Pathetic.

                 Dantalion wasn’t shutting up. It was giving William a headache, really. He still hadn’t any idea what he was blabbering on about, nor did it matter. In a moment the demon’s prattle had ceased, words caught in his throat by a simple touch; small hands that came to grip at his robes upon his back, a faint, ever so soft pull. The blonde head of the Elector bent, his forehead brushed against the tall demon’s collarbone. There were a hundred things one could say, hundreds more going through William’s mind just then, all coalescing into one collective thought; let it be. He would deal with his actions later. For now, he needed this.

                 Maybe it was a reward, maybe he merely needed comfort. It didn’t much matter. The gesture was simple, but it spoke volumes. “Don’t…Don’t look into this too much…” he murmured just barely over a whisper. There was silence, lingering and thick, yet not unpleasant. Things were calm now. William let his eyes slip closed. “Just…Thank you…Dantalion.”

It’s been some days since they actually talked to each other. The two were in separate houses, and obviously they missed each other. They were close friends after all, so it was normal to miss each other, right? The only moments they talked were during class hours… But lately, Michael hasn’t been trying to talk to Metatron, and this got Metatron absolutely confused. Did he do something wrong?

The Slytherin house was filled with different people, and he wasn’t friendly with a lot of them. However, there were some a person who he was also close with outside of his house besides his two closest friends… “Oh hey, you’re staring blankly at the wall again.” A grin appeared on the face of his “friend” and Metatron only rolled his eyes. He had black hair which was all messy at the moment, and red eyes focused on him.

“It was better when I was facing the wall compared to your face, you Gryffindor.” Metatron made a tiny joke before he lied on the floor Dantalion laughed and playfully punched his shoulder, saying that his face was much better than a bland wall. “Yeah, whatever~! I was kidding~!” Metatron raised his hands defensively. “I was only thinking about someone.”

“Do you mean that white-haired girl of Ravenclaw?” Dantalion raised an eyebrow, but his sentence caused him to have a pain on his stomach. “What the fuck was that for?!” He barked before Metatron sat up again.

“First of all, Michael is a man.” Metatron pointed out. “I know he’s pretty, but he’s a pretty boy. He’s a boy, Dantalion. Get your facts straight.” Metatron crossed his arms. “Second of all, don’t say that out loud! What do you think people would think if they heard us talking about him in private!”

Dantalion stared at him blankly. “They would think either of us liked that Ravenclaw then.”

“Exactly! So-”

“But don’t you like that Ravenclaw?”

Metatron paused on his tracks once he he heard those words from Dantalion, his eyes widening. “You Gryffindor, what do you mean by-”

“It’s Dantalion, we’ve been friends for a year, Metatron.” Slight disappointment was present in his voice. “Added to that, I don’t even need to be smart to know that. You’re dense as hell. You keep staring at him, at first I thought you were staring at that Hufflepuff girl he’s with, but it ends up you’re just staring at him.”

“I… I see.” Metatron responded but Dantalion quickly stretched before chuckling.

“Now you got that in your head, I have to go before any other people notice that I, a Gryffindor, is talking to such a snake.” 

That moment Metatron knew that he may have liked Michael… Only after he was being ignored by him! How stupid of him… Even his damn rival knew him more than himself…

“I don’t like this, I don’t like this at all!” Michael protested in front of his two friends in the same house as him. “I keep ignoring him because there’s something wrong every time I’m near him, I catch myself catching glimpses of him… Thinking of him… It’s nonsense!”

Camio blinked before tilting his head. “We did tell you to try and ignore him to see if you actually really liked him.” He began speaking. “Considering you said you either liked Gabriel or Metatron. You realized it wasn’t the female, so I suppose… You like the male.” Camio was blunt, wanting him to get the gist.

“Just accept it.” William shook his head. “There’s no big deal in accepting that you like someone.” He added to Camio’s statement. “We also accept you for whoever you are, even if you like a male from Slytherin.” 

Michael only grunted a bit before shyly looking away. “I just can’t believe I realized that I liked him when we actually tested something out… Ignoring him, and now I only think of him…” He softly replied before Camio started to pat his head. 

“Don’t worry about it, Michael. It’s fine. Even if you are smart in class, there are times where we aren’t the best with ourselves.” He tries to comfort Michael with his words, and Michael just starts to smile at him.

“Thank you Camio I really-”

And then there was William.

“Maybe you should confess.”

“Hell no!”
