My Iron Triangle of dumbasses. I love them dearly. MWAHAHAHA.
youtube
Yes, dumbasses. TRUST in your leader of dumbassery.
Look, I know most of the very new fandom is screaming about how hot Zhu Yilong is. As a book fan I'm mostly screaming about the Iron Triangle being a highly codependent team of competent dumbasses.
However.

This is legit my fav WuXie, because the sad sad man is going through a tough patch, okay.
I mock because I love WuXie with love of a thousand burning suns.
And I'm too EMOTIONALLY compromised to write a proper review post for the series so far. Maybe once I work through nearly a decade of feelings for WuXie and the Iron Triangle, and seeing them in an adaptation that doesn't suck. Then maybe I'll be able to write a proper post that does segue into tears and screeching.

i deeply appreciate that at least with some daomubiji fanfics, you can just jump in you don’t really need a lot of background info.
just need to know: - they’re tomb raiders - wu xie is main bastard baby guy who attracts monsters like catnip but also people thankfully keep saving him, can translate old texts a bit and knows some stuff about old archaeology, very interested in tomb raiding but judge his actual experience based on whoever’s writing him/whatever the installment is - pangzi is his friend, and a bit more streetwise (and greedy), but also Wants to Go where monsters will probably try to kill them a Lot - xiaoge is (???) superpowered maybe-immortal and old but don’t ask cause he probably won’t bring it up much, maybe a little if he does something remarkably shocking or wu xie asks, otherwise just assume he’s their over-powered guardian angel - third uncle, san shu, is a ‘seasoned’ tomb raider who is ALWAYS GOING MISSING - eventually wu xie gets known as young master san/three, and accumulates his own little brigade of tomb raiding helpers besides just the other 2 in his trio. so if there are other people around, its probably that extended group or else a similar situation going on of ‘temporary coworkers’ - every tomb probably has monsters in it, bugs, traps, u name it
that’s it, and then a number of the fanfics and short manhua make sense

Stuff - ALIVE
So Christmas and New Years was busy busy busy for me. But all good now.
1. So, saw Aquaman, liked Aquaman, read a lot of brocon porn about Aquaman. Koffs. Look, Jason Mamoa is hot, and somehow Patrick Wilson was hot too? And brothers who hates each other, throw in a fight for the throne... my thing.
2. Original Sin (原生之罪) is the latest Chinese drama I'm watching. It is a police drama / mystery that is kind of amazing; beautifully shot, engaging plots and awesome two leads!!!
I'm currently in the middle of watching it so when I finish I shall make a post about it!!! Watch this space.
Tumblr media
3. Also, this!!!!!!
THIS IS WU XIE!! XIAO GE AND PANGZI!!! MY FUCKING IRON TRIANGLE.
AND BECAUSE SAN SHU AND ZHU YILING KNOWS HOW TO FUCK WITH MY HEART!!!
Tumblr media
Yes, let's go. *CREYS*

I mentioned that when I start a new show my comprehension level drops before it goes back up again, probably because of new show/genre specific words.
Well I do still think the baseline it drops to is not as low as it was in January - May. Back then, in the first episodes of a show I felt drained if I tried to watch without pausing scenes outright multiple times (so new first eps had to take 1-1.5 hours). And I had to keep doing this for several episodes to feel even decently like I could watch and tolerate the ambiguity without looking up frequently. I remember Granting You A Dreamlike life would take me 1-1.5 hrs for the first 4-5 episodes and I was trying to only look up a little, but even when I didn’t look things up I often paused to read the screen for clarification. Before that with Handsome Siblingd I had to do all that AND watch multiple times to bear the ambiguity without constantly looking everything up.
Today I watched 4 episodes of 女世子. I was frustrated in the first 2 eps because of ambiguity - but it didn’t make me feel drained or frustrated. I could comprehend the plot fine without looking things up or pausing. I mostly paused Because I was annoyed there were details I COULD catch if I just paused and I was liking the story so I want all the details lol! And I looked a few words up that kept appearing just so I could stop wondering what they were. But overall that pausing/looking up only added a few minutes to my watch time, like less than 5 extra minutes, probably only 1 or 2. Which is wayyyy more bearable. Also just in general the ease of comprehending enough details while watching was good enough that I didn’t feel the need to intensely pay attention in order to catch everything (which is how I felt at first when I started Granting You A Dreamlike Life, and constantly with shows before it). I could pay more attention to try to catch details, or pause for that. But for the main plot I could just relax and watch and I’d catch it that easily. So I do think my baseline comprehension is improving a bit. Even though it still starts “lower” when I first start a new show before it bumps back up. Likewise I’ve been watching My Strange Friend lately, and comfortability of watching and more easily following the main plot has been noticeable. The fact it requires less focus to follow the plot helps a lot in motivating me to keep immersing because its less intensive. I kind of want to rewatch Goodbye My Princess and Daomubiji chongqi.
Also lol this show threw me off at first today because it’s huge on adding the er to words, and using a few variants on titles and dates that’s definitely period drama language and not the usual way to say things.
Also in looking into progress: reading wise I tried to reread chapter 1 of Tamen de Gushi today. I’m super tired so I only read 5 out of 15 pages. But it took me maybe 2 minutes or less to read those pages, hence usually it’s been taking me - so I should see tomorrow if it’s a much quicker read then before when it was 25-30 minutes a chapter. I also noticed I only needed to lookup 1-3 words a page today. Not more than that. And I could have probably skipped some word lookups and still understood, I just wanted to double check mostly. The first time I read the chapter, I think I had to look up 1/3 to 1/2 of every page. If it turns out this novel is easier to read now, then I may check out the foxghost recs soon. Since they’ll probably be more comfortable to read now.
Also, last night I read like 80 mini Daomu Biji manhua. I think manhua are definitely in my reading range, they’re way easier than both books and shows rn. Most unknown words are super clear from context - and even then, I usually only ran into 1-3 keywords a comic that I might have wanted to know, and could follow the comics without looking them up.
Currently actively studying:
- going through RTH
- going through SpoonFed Chinese
- going through Dongchinese pinyin and tone pronunciation guide
- listening to guardian, and SpoonFed Chinese audio chunks, in background down time.

whenever i read the stage 2 guide i’m pretty much there, except for maybe listening comprehension (and words known that i’ve actually Counted and Kept Track of):
You have a firm grasp of your target language’s phonology and writing system. - well I know 1100 characters, but I could learn 2000 more. I still have a touch of difficulty telling the difference between qi and xi when listening, or xuan/luan, but generally i can distinguish all sounds and understand pinyin’s pronunciation. generally i can distinguish the tones, when tested i had about a 75% recognition rate and specifically struggled with 3-4 tone versus 4-4 tone words, and 3-4 versus 2-4 tone words, and occasionally 4-1 with 4-2 tone words. I’m still working on the tones - I know i tend to say my 1 tones like 2 tones almost, and i know i need to say my 3 tones LOWER based on critiques on my pronunciation from language partners. Generally though, I think I’ve got a firm grasp on the basics - pinyin, radicals, common hanzi, tone changes in words/sentences, and tone sounds in isolation i’ve nailed.
You know at least ~3,000 words. - Debatable. I know 2000-2500 for sure, since I know the 2000 most common words in dramas and all the words in HSK 4, some which overlap and some which do not. I’ve measured those because I did them through flashcard study. I also know a variety of random genre specific words to what I specifically talk about often, watch or read often (detective words, play/show words, wuxia words, xianxia words, period drama words, mutant-related sci fi words, literature specific words that pop up in written descriptions often). So if I could count all of them, I might have 3000 or more known words.
No matter what you are listening to, you can usually understand at least one word in every sentence spoken. - True. I can understand usually a few words in any sentence.
When listening to basic spoken content (such as talking-head YouTube videos or slice-of-life TV shows) you can usually understand at least 50% of the words in most sentences, and fully understand a longer sentence around once every few minutes.  - Debatable. I need to do more listening-only practice to confirm if this is true. I don’t watch youtubers much, but I do watch slice of life shows and yeah generally this is true for them. I can watch History 3 Trapped and follow it fine without subs, so that’s probably at least 50% comprehension. For romance-heavy modern dramas, I’m certain I can follow 50% of words even without subs.
When consuming basic written content (such as blogs or simple TV shows w/ TL subs) you’re often able to follow the basic ideas being expressed (although you may miss many details). - True. In fact I’m probably beyond this. With shows with TL subs, regardless of genre I can follow the main plot and at least some details. If it’s a simple tv show, then with TL subs I can catch a majority of or ALL details depending on the scenes. If it’s a show in a new genre, it takes me a few eps to ‘get used’ to it before i can start catching finer details - but I have no problem following the main ideas. Regarding FULLY written content - with blogs I have not tried. With weibo posts, depends on if the post is on a topic i know words for, with comments YES i can follow them, with novels i can follow a LOT and get the basic ideas being expressed (although i will miss many details). So for simple material I’d say I’ve met this goal and passed it. For more detailed material, I’m at this level.
So in summary - I’ve got a bit more of a foundation for reading than the Stage 2 guide suggests at minimum, and a bit less of a listening foundation. My actual language writing/phonology basis is probably at this level.
Regardless, I’ve already been doing some ‘stage 2′ type study methods. So its probably fine to continue.
Basically:
I’m going to keep incorporating more listening. I’ve been listening to audiobooks and audiodramas more as active and passive listening. I also have been listening to Spoonfed Chinese audio as active listening which I think helps. I would like to add at least 1 show that’s just listening (no subs), because I can learn more words from context with visuals then I can with just-listening materials.
I’m going to keep going through RTH and Spoonfed Chinese, to learn more hanzi and words.
OPTIONAL I’m going to keep going through my HSK with sentences deck, and other decks. The HSK deck helps me solidify HSK stuff, and also keep track of the minimum HSK stuff I’ve covered. I have some new decks called ‘Mastering the Hanzi’ and I think those may be good supplemental review for hanzi beyond RTH. I also have a Jun Da Hanzi deck by frequency - it would be good to use that, eventually in the future, to solidify RTH hanzi to their real meanings and their pronunciations more.
I’m going to keep using DongChinese’s pinyin guide and tone trainer, as I think this foundation I have can use more improvement.
Going to keep watching shows with TL subs.
Going to keep reading books. (I should eventually do this more, I picked up Tamen de Gushi recently and it was MUCH easier to read this time). I read Mandarin Companion Sherlock already, my manhua Begin with Your Name is my reading level so I should read it, I could read The Little Prince. I’ve been reading MoDu. I’ve been reading manhua on weibo like the chongqi manhua (I read like 80 one night). I could read Daomubiji. I really have a lot of options I just should incorporate reading more when I have time.
LATER I would like to read through some of my grammar books. Just for a refresher.
