p&p got deeper when I realised, mr. darcy's pride made him prejudiced against elizabeth whereas elizabeth's prejudice after the first impression made her too proud to talk with him. the flaw of pride and prejudice is in both of them due to completely different reasons and that's why the story is even more beautiful. Not only did he rectify his mistakes (pride, letting wickham run off etc) but she corrected hers too (giving darcy attention and the chance to explain himself etc)
(and now this seems to be something obvious and I was too stupid to see it first. eh.)

Elizabeth: You are unpleasant and dissagreable and a loner and I don't like you one bit and I can't imagine how anyone tolerates you.
Mr Darcy: Yeah, baby, more.
Elizabeth: What?
Mr Darcy: What

After accidentally overhearing a conversation between Elizabeth Bennet and Charolette Lucas at the Netherfield ball, Darcy is forced to admit that he has made an embarrassing misjudgment. Elizabeth Bennet detests him. The trouble is, she might be the very person he needs most to help his sister out of her deep depression. Darcy must overcome his pride to ask a woman who does not even LIKE him to befriend his lonely sister, while Elizabeth must open her heart to a young woman in need.
Darcy and Elizabeth learn to know each other in broken pieces through letters sent to a mutually beloved girl.

Any suggestions for Austen-inspired novels? I would hate to get my hands on one and have it be unbelievably out of character.
I might be a bad person to ask. I used to read a lot more JAFF but then I got super into writing it and now I have a huge list of recommendations and no time to read any of them... and I've gone back to read some JAFF I did like and now I can't handle the anachronisms and poor characterization (not going to call anyone out for that.)
I am also extremely picky. I don't like when the work is clearly based off of P&P 1995 (shrill Mrs. Bennet, Darcy is clearly Firth with curly dark hair and pinky signet ring, Mr. Collins is gross and old). I am also all about characterization and I spend a lot of time saying, "Elizabeth/Darcy would never say/do that!" Easy examples: Darcy would not kiss Elizabeth in a fit of passion (he has self control), I hate when all the angst is Elizabeth not being able to talk (ELIZABETH CAN TALK, that's like her whole thing), or instead of being playful, Elizabeth is a snarky and sometimes downright mean.
I also will not read Screaming Bag of Evil Caroline Bingley which is an extremely pervasive thing in P&P variations, the largest genre of JAFF.
My very favourite JAFF is Fanny: A Mansfield Park Story by Amelia Marie Logan. It is a really great variation.
For a P&P continuation, I liked Letters from Pemberley by Jane Dawkins.
I have only read some of her work, but I really appreciated @amarguerite's Northanger Abbey stuff. This is my favourite: Just Like One Reads About
There is also a good Northanger Abbey sequel called Gentlemen of Gloucestershire by Michelle Wood.
What you need to understand is that the world of P&P variations seems obsessed with the idea of Elizabeth and Darcy being the ONE TRUE PAIRING that will come together no matter what the circumstances. Darcy can be a literal rapist (not even joking) and he'll still end up happily married to Elizabeth in the end.
Now a lot of people like that, I am not saying this is a bad thing, but it's not the way I see the story. I think if Elizabeth hadn't gone to Pemberley, Darcy might have just gotten over her. The book makes their eventual union very much a thing of chance. It just isn't for me.
Because of this, I tend to read JAFF about Austen's other novels, which tends to be less about true pairings and more true to the characters. But it's scarce and I have no time so I haven't read a ton.
And now my totally biased pitch, both of my novels, Prideful & Persuaded and Unfairly Caught, have been praised for staying true to characterization. I also post a ton of free stuff on my website. I either write as in character as I possibly can or I write farce, there is very little middle ground.
If anyone knows of some really good in character JAFF stories, please feel free to suggest them! Also, there is SO MUCH available for free online, so read around and see what you like. Watch the tags though!
