"The Trump family is our family" is a cool one-liner for this low-key and underwhelming film that talks about complex manifestations of racism in the early 1980s USA. There's a lot of good stuff here: sharp and short appearances from icy-cold capitalist-pioneer Chastain (in the role of Donald Trump's older sister) and cuddly, emotionally punchy Hopkins in slightly off-type supporting roles, the presence of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's phenomenal mother, Feldshuh, here hidden under the hefty makeup and hairdo, as well as limited screen time, unfortunately. The lead and the actor playing his school friend (Repeta and Webb, who could be given more screen time) both deliver, yet their story, while super interesting, suffers due to the massive focus on the former. Gray does the clichéd thing: he focuses on the character that is torn between teenage friendship and the white-racist privilege that his parents seem eager to soak him in, and he pushes the other one to the background, therefore perpetuating the social injustice he seems to be invested in exploring. The great cinematography is by Darius Khondji, who finally has another (only his second!) shot at an Oscar.

BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths
What a beautiful, incredible and poetic movie! 
I highly recommend it!
The view, the landscape are so well shot. Even the music was fabulous. 
G. Iñárritu’s film devotes itself to the crossing and blurring of boundaries: between life and death; between fact and fiction; between the personal and the professional; and, perhaps above all, between Mexico and the United States.
Regarding the Buddhist word “Bardo”: according to the Buddhist scholar Yangsi Rinpoche, someone “who has accumulated a great deal of negative karma” will find the Bardo “very dark and gloomy”. “Positive karma will make “the bardo appear shining and radiant, like the luminous light of the full moon”. The mix of gloom and radiance in Silverio’s bardo, shot in lucid-dreaming colors by Darius Khondji, suggests ambivalent karma. He seems to be a pretty good guy, and also a profoundly troubled soul.
Also, when Silverio is confronted by his friend about him being the “artiste” for the Americans and forgetting where he came from, Silverio responds with a tirade about the venality and hypocrisy of a media that sacrifices integrity and decency on the altar of ratings and social media likes. 
At the beginning I thought that Bardo was for Mateo, but the more you are watching the movie, the more you understand that the word is for someone else.
