Forgetting the Sky (Sahara Cizîrî x Rêzan)

I've been real busy w life and character studies that I've neglected this for too long. In the spirit of wanting to clean out my to-do list I'm gonna grind to finish this (though I have gotten a lot of progress here and there). It's a writing trade with @galpalaven and I hope that both they and you enjoy it dear reader lol. Also, forgive me, my characterization might be a lil rusty since it has been an on-and-off project for a while,,,))) Edit: forgot to tag the actual blog of the game lmao @ataleofcrowns

Rêzan looked up toward the large, blue expanse that stretched out over the palace and beyond. Not a single cloud was in sight today. And, from the fluttering of his dark locks, there was a chilly breeze in the air.

The Lord Sorcerer could hear the birds chirping away on this day. They freely sang their songs without a care in the world, filling up the afternoon with their music somewhere off in the distance.

It was beautiful.

But it was also so, terribly dreadful.

It felt like months- no- years had passed without a single drop of rain. Without the rainy season, the agricultural regions of Arsur would suffer. They did suffer. Impoverished farmers who were not able to afford the pricy assistance of magi to help irrigate their crops were held behind by the manual labor of digging canals to drain what they could from the rivers.

The very Spirits themselves seem to grow restless, weak even, and priests from all over the country were petitioning for assistance from the Crown.

His Crown.

All at once.

He wished he could do more for her. He'd wanted nothing more than the ability to relieve the responsibilities weighing on her shoulders in their entirety, but he couldn't. He had already done everything in his power to assist as is.

The Lord Sorcerer had recruited magi from the various schools across the empire to help with the water crisis. He made sure to send aid to the priests and helped organize the petitioners so that not a single moment of his love's time would be wasted. Hours were spent in his office, combing through records and books for a cure of some kind or a reason for the sudden lack of water.

His body ached at the mere recollection of the endless work he had been doing to help his Crown.

Yet, nothing ever truly felt enough. A feeling that was all too familiar to the magus, even after all these years of successful, faithful servitude in his position.

Sahara didn't even notice when he had knocked, Rêzan waiting a moment before letting himself into her chambers.

It was an absolute mess.

There were piles of scrolls and tomes scattered around the room, maps, and missives draping themselves across the sitting pillows and huddling together at the end of her bed.

Her bedroom resembled the inside of a mercenary's tent rather than the resting place of the Crown of Arsur.

With her back turned to him, Rêzan took slow and quiet strides toward her. The magus paused, checking to see if she would take note of his presence.

Silence.

Just the scribbling of her pen to fill the air between them.

Moving in, his delicate fingers locked together over her face, covering her eyes. The Lord Sorcerer could feel his Crown tensing under his touch, then relaxing upon recognizing his familiar presence.

The sudden gasp that escaped her made his heart skip a beat or two, the smile dancing on her lips pulling at the corner of his own.

"Did I surprise you, beloved?"

"You- you constantly surprise me, my love," she replied in return, her heart slowly returning to a normal rate. The endearment directed towards him rolled off her tongue so naturally- so easily- that it made the tips of his ears turn red. He averted his gaze turned from her, finding himself unable to meet her eyes as his own found their way to what she had been working on.

A letter. A rather strongly worded one at that.

"Oh, were you writing to the Mîrs?"

Her hands moved to his, pulling them down and letting his fingertips rest against her shoulders. Lord Rêzan did his best to hold his tongue upon seeing the way his Crown's shoulders slumped at the mere mention of the Mîrs. It wasn't going too well it seemed.

"I'm afraid so. The reports from Marabad didn't appear to be consistent with the reports from the royal army we received yesterday. The situation in Penewar has apparently turned for the worse as well."

She pointed her finger accusingly at two open letters sitting on the far end of her desk, glaring at them as if the parchment had somehow managed to offend her personally. In a way, Rêzan supposed they did.

Looking back to his love, the magus took note of the Crown's weary eyes, her sunken cheeks beneath the glimmer of distilled sunlight that dusted her cheeks. Though there still was a shine to her face, her normally glowing features seemed dull and drained of life.

"Sahara?"

"Yes?“

"When was the last time you took a rest from your duties? Have you had anything to drink recently? Have you had anything to eat?" Worry laced itself throughout each and every question. From the way his grey eyes scanned up and down Sahara, she knew there'd be plenty more questions to answer unless she put an early stop to it.

The Crown whipped around in her seat, looking up to shoot the man an incredulous look.

"Rêzan."

He blinked at her raised brow.

"I…um. Have I said something wrong?"

"Surely, you, of all people are not in a position to be fretting over me with such questions."

Her pointed words stole a small chuckle from him. She certainly had a point there, that he couldn't deny.

The bags under his eyes were probably not making a very convincing foundation for his concern. The magus knew full well that he had little room to talk, the countless times Sahara has had to pry him from his work recounted in his mind.

Still, he couldn't help but be concerned. He was the Crown's Sorcerer after all, he could afford to push himself to his limits. It was his duty to. But his Crown? He couldn't allow her to do the same, he needed her to be alright.

Their whole country did.

Rêzan studied her gaze, the golden shine of her eyes melting away his anxiety ever so slightly. Deep down, he knew better. He knew of her strength, her resolve, and he knew of her capabilities. He also knew that, at the end of the day, Sahara could handle herself. His Crown, if anything, was resilient.

It was just one of the many qualities that he found so enchanting about her.

"Forgive me, my Crown," He leaned down, gently prying the pen from her hand. Fortunately for him, Sahara relented, her gaze following his movements as he slowly placed it to the side for emphasis. As if to put on a little show for her, the magus slowly raised her hand to his lips. Drinking up the beautiful red on her face and feeling rather emboldened, Rêzan brushed his lips against her bare knuckles. "I hope you will be able to indulge me, just this once."

There was a pause. Sahara pursed her lips a little.

"I suppose we both could use a break." Sahara relented, putting down her papers and stretching her limbs out. The emphasis on her words made it clear, however, that if she were to rest, then so would he.

An arrangement he was happy to agree to.

"Shall I ask for some refreshments then? The servants are just outside. Perhaps you would like something to eat, if I am to assume that you haven't already. It must have been-."

Sahara raised her hand to slow his words as she considered the idea for a moment. But after a long second of contemplation, she shook her head.

The Crown turned her attention from him, beginning to clear away her desk. "No, there's no real need to trouble them just yet, I do think I'd like to rest my eyes if I can, however."

Rêzan looked around to survey the damage his love had done to her room, "I believe that can be arranged…" His words trailed off as he made to help clear the rest of her chamber, moving to the center of the room and holding out his palms.

There was a flutter, a surge of energy through him. It was as if he had given life to the papers around the two of them, sheets flying around and falling into neat piles. Scrolls coiled themselves up once more, stacking atop each other, though he knew they would still need to sort them later.

For now, though, it would suffice.

"You really must teach me how you do that later," Sahara breathed in amazement, brushing past the magus and seizing the chance to lay on her now-restored mattress. The brief touch alone sent a small shiver down Rêzan's back, the magus feeling his face warm a little.

"Hmm… I suppose I could. It would simply depend on how your magic lessons are going."

The Crown gasped in mock offense while Rêzan made himself comfortable on a seat nearby her bed.

"My magic lessons are going perfectly fine, I assure you! …Unless," she hesitated, looking at him with slight concern and pulling her lips into a tight, small frown. "Did Perjin say otherwise in their reports to you?"

"What?" The idea seemed ridiculous to the Lord Sorcerer, "Not at all. I, however, am certainly pleased to see that you are aware of your impressive growth though."

Sahara groaned at that, earning herself a laugh from her Sorcerer. Unable to hide her face without losing some of the golden pigment to the pillows, she opted to switch the conversation instead. With a few scoots back, she patted the space in front of her in invitation. There was a noise that sounded reminiscent of a cough, her golden eyes evading the inquisitive look directed toward her.

"Will you not join me? Or did you intend on continuing to tease me from a distance like so," Her voice was soft now, almost inaudible.

"I was hoping you'd ask, actually," Rêzan shyly admitted, the confidence dying a little in his throat as he joined his love. His prior teasing seemed to have burned up what little forwardness he could muster now.

It was one thing to trade easy flirtations and teasing words across the room. It was even easier for the two of them to raise each other up with earnest compliments too.

But it was a whole nother thing to be so close.

They lay there for a while, neither daring to say a word, fearing what would happen should someone disrupt the peaceful bliss that blanketed them. The comforting silence hung there for a long moment, a welcome guest in the couple's eyes. And though the silent squeeze the Lord Sorcerer gave Sahara's hand spoke volumes, the peaceful silence remained, at least for a short while longer.

”Are you feeling a little better?“

The Crown squeezed his hand in response.

“Oh, most definitely, I must thank you for checking in on me. I think… I think I needed this.“

”I am glad to do it,“ He craned his head a little, gently pressing his lips against the top of her head. She was a balm in his arms, the Sorcerer feeling his very worries wither under her presence. The feelings of warmth Rêzan got from cradling her very sunlight in his embrace was one he found himself growing steadily addicted to over the years. ”Truly.“

The couple closed their eyes, their frames slotting together in perfect alignment. It felt like the very heavens themselves came to a standstill, all craning themselves to try and bear witness to the beautiful sight laid out before them.

No amount of filtered sunlight through the curtains nor candleglow could shine through their eclipse, the shroud of their dark hair shielding the other from the world outside.

Spirits, it felt like hours had dragged by, the magus almost dozing off when he heard the soft tones of his beloved's voice coaxing him back to reality.

Sahara had pulled back from him by then, turning over in her bed and staring up at the ceiling.

”My love? Did you hear me?“

”Hmm?“ he responded rather weakly, still a little weary from being denied a well-earned nap.

It took a long pause of silence before Sahara could find the words, and the strength, to continue.

”Do you…Do you think that we've done enough? That there will ever be an 'enough'?“

Rêzan didn't even have to ask to know what she must have been talking about.

The drought.

No matter how hard they'd try to forget, the drought would forever linger in the back of their minds. At least, until the situation was handled and the two finished doing their part for Arsur.

Both Sahara and him cared too much for their country, their people, to allow for it to be any other way.

Though he was naturally observant, Rêzan could easily hear that there was a pained twinge to her words through his time with her alone. The magus rubbed his eyes to refocus his tired gaze on the soft features of her face- the subtle droop of her expression reigniting his worry.

Sometimes, despite his best efforts, he found himself forgetting that she still wasn't completely accustomed to rule. Most days, her demeanor in court and amongst her advisors implied otherwise.

The level of vulnerability she'd show him every once in a while when it was just the two of them, helped to ground the magus back to reality.

Taking a slow breath, he turned onto his back, feeling the cool press of her bed shake the last vestiges of sleep from his mind.

”Are you having a crisis of faith, Sahara?“

It was her turn to laugh this time, albeit a rather weak one.

“Something like that, yes.”

His silvery grey eyes flicked over to Sahara for just a moment before he continued.

“Hmm. You know, I used to have a surprisingly great deal of faith when I was younger. Perhaps not the same type of faith one would have for the Spirits or fate and destiny itself, but in the world. Rather, my place in it, my abilities. Back then, I truly believed that I could do a great deal of good- that one day, I would.”

“Rêzan…”

He smiled at the concern in her voice, his love probably knew where he was going with this, but he continued nevertheless.

”I lost that when the previous Crown became lost to us. I was hopeless, aimless. But then one day… you arrived, caked in dirt and grime.“

“Not the best first impression, I take it.”

“On the contrary, you were radiant. From the very moment we met.“

The two couldn't help but share a look at the mention of their first meeting, the now nostalgic memory warming them from the inside out. His Crown pushed the side of her face against her plush pillow, keeping the hues of red hidden from his view.

Fortunately for her, Rêzan refocused his eyes toward the ceiling once more.

”You gave me purpose, Sahara. You reignited something I had long lost within me. And having spent all these years by your side, witnessing your strength in all its glory, supporting you and being supported, by you, in turn-“

Rêzan had said much, perhaps too much for one to handle at once, but he still felt the need to make his admiration for her clear within his heart- to leave no words left unsaid.

”I swear to you, my Crown, there is not a single soul in this world that I could say I have greater faith in.“

'My'.

It was a simple word, a subtle addition to their respective titles. Yet the power, the hold it had over the couple was unmatched.

The Sorcerer felt Sahara's slender hands cup the side of his face, his sun pulling him in, urging him to look at her.

That beautiful glow in her eyes was stronger, shining brighter through the watery tears that lined her eyes. Sahara was biting down her lip, keeping her emotions at bay as best she could. She leaned forward, their foreheads pressed together.

Then her lips brushed against his own.

She tasted like home, warm and comforting, sweet and safe.

”I apologize, I was rambling again, wasn't I?“ Rêzan laughed, pulling away from her delicate touch to speak and catch his breath. Though his words were faint, near inaudible, he didn't dare raise it in fear that his already weak voice would give out on him.

Sahara leaned back as well, the regained distance between them a mercy for the two reserved lovers.

Though the dark curtains of his hair shielded much of his reddened face from her, Sahara still caught a small glimpse of his beautiful expression.

His gaze was soft, his lips parted ever so slightly. The way he had met her golden eyes just then was worthy of a thousand different poems.

”Oh Rêzan, you know I adore how you ramble,“ Sahara breathed, once again pressing against his lips to sear her affection in his heart.

A low hum against her was the only reply she got from her beloved. As pleased as he was flustered to be so spoiled by the Crown's affections, Rêzan returned her lazy, slow kisses, letting each one linger before he'd seek out another.

”Beloved,” Rêzan breathed, burying his face against the nape of her neck and squeezing her tightly against him to hide from her.

“Yes?” Her breath was airy and light, the Lord Sorcerer doing little to hide the smile he got from hearing her sweet response.

“Have I successfully raised your spirits, Sahara?” A deep blush betrayed his act of confidence, the magus angled his head toward her. “Or shall I continue to sing your praises?”

Sahara looked down at her Sorcerer with an easy smile, finding the remnants of her colored balm on his lips fill her with a renewed flame.

“There is more for you to sing about?” She feigned a look out towards the window before returning back down at her beloved nestled against her. “Well, I'm certain we have more time before we have to get back to our duties, don't we? If you wish to continue singing my praises, then do go on.”

The moon looked at his sun, lips turning playful.

”As you wish, my Crown.”

Who will qualify from ESC SF1 in 2023?

Eurovision is on! Rehearsals are on! We’ve seen most of them performing at the multiple preparties and the first clips (even super shots ones) are in!

It’s time to predict who will qualify on May 9th from Semifinal 1! These are my predictions based on the reactions, comments, listens and clicks in social media, Youtube and Spotify.

Some I will get right, others I may not - that’s the risk you will take by continuing reading this.

1. Norway - Alessandra - Queen of Kings

She’s IN. No question. HUUUUUUGE viral hit by now. There was some concern about Alessandra’s vocals (MGP used autotune) when performing live but she’s on point based on the first rehearsal clip. Visually they’re loyal to National Final one but her outfit is a bit different, she’s wearing a crown look a like hair band and there’s more light now on the stage.

2. Malta - The Busker - Dance (our own party)

This is worst spot in semifinals to perform as second in Eurovision. Lots of good entries have failed because 15 other amazing songs will follow and people tend to forget. However, Malta’s lively and colourful performance does stand a chance. The song stands out with its saxophone sound. If this did go through would I be sad, definitely not but being where it is, second and between two dark songs (Norway, Serbia) I say this is OUT.

3. Serbia - Luke Black - Samo mi se spava (Само ми се спава)

One of my faves this year but I know a lot of people who’re not warming up to this Hatari II. However, their staging looks improved and Luke’s performing very confident. This kind of dark pop is exciting for many! In Eurovision it doesn’t matter how many haters you have but how many lovers, based on the interest in Spotify / Youtube I’d say this might appeal enough voters to be IN.

4. Latvia - Sudden lights - Aijā

Indieband with a strong chorus. In the national selection the staging didn’t impress me but this is one of my faves again. Lamps are there though but there’s a good energy in here which I hope will come across to the audience. This is still boarderline, this can go to either direction. But I have faith so IN.

5. Portugal - Mimicat - Ai coração

Portugal has been topping their game in preparties and even though you wouldn’t like this kind cabaree music - this is very authentic, catchy, memorable. And she can sing and perform - true pro! The stage looks a bit empty without the couch but I do have faith in Portuguese staging skills because they have nailed it during the few previous years. I still say IN.

6. Ireland - Wild Youth - We are one

Why the producers put this at 6th? If this had been an opener for this semi Wild Youth could have had a chance. However, they’re going all the way with the staging, using every inch of that stage: we have golden body, pyros, stairs - we know the guy can sing but the song is a bit generetic and forgettable. This breaks my heart but OUT.

7. Croatia - Let 3 - Mama ŠČ!

A big fan favourite. Huge interest before going in to Eurovision, they also did well in the preparties. We saw some aspects from the pics and Tik Tok clip that we saw before (same LED screen, cannons). Not my personal favourite but a lot of people love this kind of quirky performance so IN.

8. Switzerland - Remo Forrer - Watergun

One of my personal faves this year but again - a lot of people don’t agree with me though. The anti-war song was actually written two years ago which I kind of hope would push some buttons among the voters. However, Switzerland was one of those unfortunate countries last year who went to Final with Jury votes only and received 0 points from audience. This time around Semifinals have only audience voting so I’m afraid there might be payback and especially since it’s another Swiss ballad.

Staging like this can be strong but the clip didn’t convince me yet. Pretty dark and they have similar strings attached to the dancers as Finland had in UMK (why are you coping??). I love this but I say OUT.

9. Israel - Noa Kirel - Unicorn

She’s IN. This is not my favourites to be honest, just because it’s so messy genre like. Israel was a bit of mystery to everyone because they didn’t participate to any preparties and they kept all their plans as a secret. But she sounds amazing and the Tik Tok clip and the photos promise us a spectacle. The seem to have a running unicorn in the LED screen, she’s in this bright box, upside down and in the end she’s making Chanel style break dance. This will please many for sure and high chances of becoming a top5 in the final.

10. Moldova - Pasha Parfeni - Soarele și luna

This is one of the most ethnic entries this year and Pasha Parfeni is no stranger to Eurovision as he represented Moldova also back in 2012. The song is memorable, it does stand out and the live performance even just from the pictures doesn’t disappoint. Moldova is a master of creating memorable performances even with a smaller budget and there’s no way that this didn’t go through. So IN.

11. Sweden - Loreen - Tattoo

Do I need to say this? IN. The LED sandwich so called what they used in Sweden was a lot bigger(16 m² ) but I don’t think the current size (6,25 m² ) will cause actual problems because the camera work will make it look larger. This is copy paste from Melodiefestivalen so pretty epic. A lot of people do complain however that Loreen is not bringing anything new to ESC as this does remind her victorious song Euphoria from decade ago. However, potential winning song for sure!

12. Azerbaijan - TuralTuranX - Tell Me More

One of the indie entries we have this year. I quite like it but... this is not a crowd pleaser unfortunately and in Eurovision you kind of have to be. This is such a good feel song but no. Stating isn’t doing much either, they’re standing on the platform of spaped by the heart playing their quitars. Unless there is something major happening what wasn’t revealed in the Tik Tok clips. I’m sorry, OUT.

13. Czechia - Vesna - My Sister's Crown

There’s so much love for this entry but at the same time there’s talk that this might be the shock non-qualifier. They didn’t perform as well and confidently as people were expecting them to during the preparties. However, in their live rehearsals we see them wearing rose coloured outfits, they have long braids - there’s a message of we’re not your dolls combined with some doll movements so very strong female empowerment thing going on. This can get too messy but hard to say from the Tik Tok clip itself. I still belive this would be IN.

14. Netherlands - Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper - Burning Daylight

Another sleepy ballad. I don’t hate it. And to be honest this has the strongest ballad staging I’ve seen so far. Mia and Dion are standing on this moving platform and walking towards, around, from each other. This can be a moment, beautiful one. Their voices go nicely together. BUT this comes after a strong Czechia and before Finland. I don’t see this year being very kind to the ballads, people are clearly having more reactions (clicks, listens etc) towards the quirky songs of ESC 2023. I say OUT.

15. Finland - Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha

A big fan favourite when going in for the rehearsals. Many didn’t expect Käärijä’s team to change the stating at all actually because it was pretty damn good already at the UMK. However, they have upgraded it. They have this big wooden box on the stage, according to photos and the Tik Tok clip he’s in it at some point and also the dancers where they emerge at one point. The silhouette is awesome! Great add and super powerful! There’s pyro at the end also, colours of the rainbow - the human snake has movement. This is so good! If Finland doesn’t win the ESC alltogether I do belive this will make the televotes to explode at the semi for sure! IN!

- My name's Victoria, I'm 21 and from the North West of England

- My main faves are The Killers/Brandon Flowers, Hurts and Taylor Swift

- My favourite Killers albums are Battle Born and Pressure Machine, and my top songs are This River Is Wild, In The Car Outside and Be Still

- My favourite Hurts albums are Surrender and Faith, and my top songs are Rolling Stone, Darkest Hour, All I Have To Give and Somebody To Die For

- My favourite Taylor Swift albums are Reputation and 1989, and my top songs are Superstar, The Best Day, Don't Blame Me and Look What You Made Me Do

- Some other artists/bands I really love are Depeche Mode, Maisie Peters, Louis Tomlinson, Kelsea Ballerini, MARINA, Courteeners, HAIM, Gary Numan, The War On Drugs and a lot of other people. Basically I love indie rock, dark synth music and country music :)

- Some of my hobbies are record collecting, making YouTube videos, writing essays about things I love for no reason, thrifting, going to concerts, reading, playing video games and going to see movies at the cinema

- I'm a Virgo and an INTJ

- I speak English and French and I'm trying to learn German at the moment

Ansolutely confused at how now the damn 2000s and late 1990s are trending when I was actually born in that era? Like I understand now the internet is mostly blogged by teenagers and young adults. Early forums were full of late Gen X and early Millenials talking about High School and DOOM and computer science and Star Trek, and there was always a notalgia for their time, which in the mid teens to mid twenties in the early 90s was the 70s.

Of course in the 90s nostalgia was for 30 years ago when more mainstream and popular musicians in their late 20s and early 30s pined for the sounds of their childhood, the 1960s. Smash Mouth’s Walkin on the Sun, Austin Powers, the… Live Action Flinstones Movies I guess? And Movies about Vietnam or life after Vietnam like Forrest Gump and Full Metal Jacket (technically late 80s but you get what I mean)

Mainstream Anachronistic appeal is for 30 years ago, producers and musicians and designers and advertisers use their childhood experiences and background to use nostalgia and a unique and no longer popular aesthetic to appeal to an also rich with money, decently wealthy, nostalgic group of consumers who grew up in a similar era.

Not only that but that’s how nostalgia influences politics. Eisenhower got elected in the 50s for being a war veteran and talking about benefits for American infrastructure but also booming markets, appealing to the 1920s postwar boom after WWI

Kennedy appeals to the idea of equity and social justice and progress like FDR in the 30s along with LBJ.

Nixon uses the iconography of WWII to justify nam and the boomers following their parents to serve their country.

Reagan appeals to the “good old fashioned family” of the 1950s and his stardom in the movies during that era to get elected. Reagan uses a LOT of his old age and fashion to imitate a nuclear family husband and his wife Nancy as the housewife. Drug panics were more a 1930s thing but the fear of gangs and gang violence with drugs was a 50s thing, and evangelism from the 1950s came back in swing with the religious right!

Bill Clinton uses his hippie background to appeal to Liberals and pushes for free markets but equity amongst people like early Kennedy.

Bush and Obama surprisingly don’t appeal that much to the 1970s or 80s, giving the early 2010s and 2000s this unique aesthetic of politicians being a new template.

Then Donald Trump comes along as a synthesis of Reagan era nationalism and Jerry Falwell era hope and faith of the 80s with sprinkles of Rush Limbaugh era bigotry from the 90s, and now we have essentially Bill Clinton 2.

I lived through the 2010s and basically saw the 80s get revived in real time. The 2000s for me was a blur but I do remember a couple movies or music would imitate 70s pop and funk music. The Bee Gees got popular again, while emo rock got popular I think properties like Scooby Doo and other stuff from the 70s were getting franchise movies. Star Trek movies too!

Then the 2010s start and you get a trickle of nostalgia, mostly geek and gamer companies selling properties from the 80s like He-man, Transformers, Nintendo game references to Mario and Zelda and Metroid, google does a doodle for Pac man’s 30th anniversary, Wreck it Ralph is a movie about arcade games, Michael Bay makes dough with his Transformers movies.

Then we get Marvel and D but specifically superheroes from the Bronze age of the 1980s. Watchmen, the Dark Knight trilogy, and heck the Avengers are more based off the modern 80s designs than the silver age 60s ones. Nerd culture is in full swing, by the mid 2010s Adam Sandler made a movie where 80s video games invade earth, Thor Ragnarok is essentially a movie built on 80s aesthetics, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a game about Chuck E Cheese horror mascots like those of the 80s! Indie games base a lot of game design and aesthetic from games of the NES! Shovel Knight for gods sake!

IT got a remake and that’s about a clown that terrorizes Maine every 27 years coming out 27 years after the 1990 TV series.

Thundercats reboot, She-ra reboot, Ghostbusters gets a 2016 movie, Pac man got a cartoon on Disney XD for some reason, music begins using synth pop again, rap explodes on the scene!

And by the 2020s after a decade of nostalgia, there’s been an underground movement of 90s nostalgia, mainly indie games and music that imitate either 90s platformers or 3D aesthetic or the revive of the Boomer shooter thanks to New Blood studios and DOOM 2016, 90s cartoons nostalgia makes the return of the zany and unhinged animation that only lurked on Newgrounds for so long. That was during the early to mid 2010s when people in their teens and 20s were pining for the era of the 90s. Now the 90s are turning 30. Mainstream appeal is making it to producers new on the scene, consumers born during that era, and designers taking aesthetics from their surroundings.

The teens and young adults now in their teens to mid twenties are born between 2008 (15 years old) and 1998 (25 years old) meaning that… the new counterculture of young people nostalgic for their childhood were born in the late 90s to 2000s the era of PS2 video games and chrome and see through electronics and bubbly round design and shiny gradients is here. Though most people on this site were born during that era, the people in their later 20s were around to play those games and absorb their culture. Given 2 more years and we’ll be in the mid 2020s where the appeal of pop culture is the mid 90s, of the Playstation, the N64, the simpsons, and post-punk.

Then the nostalgia for the young rebels is the mid 2000s to early 2010s, after all nostalgia for the Nintendo DS while in it’s height right now when people my age remember fondly that hardware, it’s fading away, along with nostalgia for the Wii… to the Golden Age of Cartoon Network and the era of the late DS and the 3ds, admittedly PKMN Black and White and late 2000s cartoons got revivals back in 2020 due to memes, but that was a fad, this will be aesthetic and artistic.

Memes revive culture from 10 years ago, young adults and teens revive culture from 20 years ago, and culture from 30 years ago is the mainstream.

We currently live in the era where the 2000s are popular on Tumblr, give it 2 more years, and we will be in the era of mid to late 2000s culture while the 90s nostalgia is in full swing.

What is your character’s full name?: Cage Lucas Newman.

When were they born?: St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th), 1986 in Merrock.

What are their parent’s names?: Jason (father, deceased) and Victoria (mother, deceased).

Do they have any brothers or sisters?: Cage is the middle child, with a younger sister, Clementine, and older brother, Kellan.

What kind of eyes do they have?: Startlingly blue, light eyes that he’s very good at using to get what he wants.

What kind of hair do they have?: Right now, it’s very dark blonde, almost brown, and wavy, a few inches long.

What is their complexion like?: Like worn sandpaper; he has nice skin, but it’s definitely rough and callused. He freckles in the sunshine, and has a number of moles and scars.

What body type are they?: Stocky, for the most part. Athletic and strong, but he’s built in a sort of ‘stacked’ way.

What is listening to their voice like?: Traveling down an old dirt road in the countryside. His voice is so deep that it’s surprising at times, but it’s very soothing, and has been called a little sexy, too.

What do they hate most about themselves?: He wishes he was a little more disciplined about his physique, for sure.

Do they have a favorite quote?: “It doesn’t hurt to feel sad from time to time.” – Willie Nelson.

What sort of music do they enjoy?: Country, but old country – 70s, 80s, 90s, the stuff his dad liked to listen to. He’ll listen to just about everything, though, isn’t really picky.

Have/would they ever cheat(ed) on a partner?: He’s never cheated on a partner, no. He’s been in open relationships or flirtationships or whatever they are called, but has never cheated.

Have they been cheated on by a partner?: To his knowledge, no.

Have they ever lost someone close to them?: Yes. Cage has lost both his father and his mother at this point.

What is their favorite sound?: Nature. There is no one sound that he loves more than any other, anything that reminds him of being outside, being around the people that he loves in the middle of a field on his farm.

Are they judgmental of others?: Nah, Cage is very live and let live in his life. Why bother to spend that time judging someone who doesn’t care what you think?

Have they ever been drunk?: Far too often, although he doesn’t tend to overdo it now in his ‘old age.’

What are they like when they stay up all night?: His crew knows if he’s stayed up too late the night before because he’ll be in his office, door closed, lights off to catch up on paperwork… or sleep on the couch. If he’s on a job site, he’s absolutely chugging coffee to stay awake.

Have they ever been arrested?: He’s been hauled into the drunk tank a couple of times. And although never formally charged, he did get taken in for a bar fight once.

What evokes strong memories for them?: Blueberries and high school football games.

What do they do on rainy days?: Rainy days are the ones that he spends working in the work shop, catching up on projects. If he’s at home, he spends his time watching TV or movies, normally with Colton.

What religion are they?: Raised Catholic, Cage attended church as a kid, but once he got older, he lost his faith. Namely when he lost his father as an adult. He hasn’t been to church much since then.

What word do they overuse the most?: “Colt!”

What do they wear to bed?: Flannel pants and not much else; he tosses his sweatshirt on the chair near his bed to throw on in the morning, though. Too chilly sometimes.

Do they have any tattoos or piercings?: No, neither.

What type of clothing are they most comfortable in?: Jeans, a plain white t-shirt, a flannel plaid shirt unbuttoned and work boots.

What is their most disliked food?: He’s not super into asparagus.

Do they have any enemies?: Not really, no. Although he does have a hard time being nice to McMansion owners.

What does their writing look like?: It’s not as bad as someone would expect, but it’s definitely kind of fitting for someone in construction who writes on 2x4s most of the time.

How will you play out this year?

This is a new year, a new chance to change your life. To set new goals and refocus, but will you?

Are you ready to change your ways? God has already prepared you for it, but are you prepared?

Are you ready to make the necessary changes to get you to where you want to go?

At my church, we start the new year with a fast. This is to clean out our bodies and our minds. We pray so that we may be able to hear God's voice in our lives. We want to start the new year by giving thanks for our blessings and for the upcoming blessings that we know he will bring.

So for 8 days, we eat only vegetables and water and we go to church every night.

I choose to only listen to nonsecular music and not to watch anything that isn't inspiring. I also choose not to be on social media these days as I want to be as clean as I can be. I want to hear God's word and for me, and I can't when there is too much bidding for my attention.

This is a sacrifice that we do once a year to give back and to start the year off right with the right things, giving thanks, being grateful, and sacrificing, all for the Lord.

Now some of you will think that's crap and hey, you know what they say about opinions, right?

I don't ask you to believe what I do or what I believe in. It's a free country, and it's all good. This is what gets me through the day... God, this church, and this Bishop saved my life. If a flying monkey saved your life and you believe in flying monkeys, good for you! Whatever gets you through your days is great for you! I am all for it!

This is what gets me through. This gives us the strength we need ... because, like Romans 8.28 says:

"It's all working together for your good."

For me, this isn't a sacrifice, as I know all that he did in my life, and what he continues to do, and this is small in comparison. So let me ask you, what is going to be different from last year? Are you going to do the same things and expect different results? Yeah, in case you didn't know, that's the definition of insanity.

This year, don't miss your God moment....because if you're not paying attention, you will miss it. I know I have missed mine a few times. I took my eye off the ball and missed it. I thought my way was better, I didn't have enough faith to hold out, to wait for God.

You can not follow the crowd and expect to have a private meeting with God. No matter what anyone says, pay no mind to them, this is your game, your life, and play it your way! This year, don't drop the ball. Seize your God moment. Put God first in everything you do, live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Here are the 2 easy steps to get through this year:

1. Take advantage of a God moment. Act now!

Don't look around. Trust your gut. This is your play. Listen to the voice inside of you and go for it!

2.Stay was the course

Don't give up, don't stop believing, don't doubt, know you will win, and stay focused.

When you drop the ball, don't expect God to pick it up and bring it back to you. That's on you. You did it.

Don't say why didn't this happen or lay blame on everyone but yourself. It's your fumble. Deal with it! Then admit it, let it go, and give it back to him because even when all hope seems lost.... seconds can change the play of the day.

Don't give up, and don't lose faith even when it seems dark, even when the storms are coming at you, hold on to that tiny mustard seed of faith, it will get you through.

So today, my friends, I am asking you, how will you play out this year? How will you change? Don't just make unresolved resolutions, don't just talk about change, you need to do something, you need to be in the game, not on the sidelines and even if you fall, even if you drop the ball, even if you miss your shot, the game is not over, there is still time to win the game but only if you don't quit and as I say at the end of every blog….only if you want to...

This is a long post. Buckle up.

Recently I've been thinking a lot about how the dark academia aesthetic, whilst rich in aspects such as literature, music, and material beauty, is lacking in things such as activities.

So I've compiled a list of activities that I would personally deem as befitting the dark academia aesthetic (please do add to this list, as it's far from complete).

Sports:

Rowing (it's in literally every dark academic approved movie.)

Fencing

Tennis

Cricket

Croquet

Rugby (contrary to popular belief, women, men, and everyone in between can play this sport. It's not just for the boys.)

Polo

Equestrian sports

+ Figure/ice skating

+ Running (sprinting is handy for catching your lover when they fling themselves from a tower or something, and long distance is great for running alongside carriages that you want to rob.)

+ Boxing

+ Javelin, discus, wrestling covered in oil, think ancient Grecian Olympics.

+ Archery (how could I have forgotten.)

+ Ballet, ballroom dancing, traditional dances

+ Climbing

+ Snooker/Pool (either professionally or just for fun.)

Or, if you prefer the Oscar Wilde approach, no sports at all. That's cool too.

Games:

Chess (of course)

Backgammon

Cards (rummy, poker, blackjack, speed, whist, any game really, maybe with the exception of snap.)

Cluedo (I think it's 'Clue' in America. Don't argue with me, it counts as dark academia. It's got murder in it.)

+ Scrabble

Crafts:

Knitting (I knit socks, scarves, and am attempting a jumper. I find that it's far easier to knit your own jumper, scarf, socks, or whatever than hunting for one suitably 'aesthetically pleasing'.)

Embroidery (monogrammed handkerchiefs and shirts are so in.)

Weaving (sweet mother, I cannot-)

Making lace

Gardening

Cooking (not sure if this counts as a craft, but I'll throw it in just in case.)

Sewing (making clothes for yourself through sewing is a great way to make sure that your clothes fit perfectly, and are styled the way you want them to be. With practise, it becomes easier, and is definitely a useful skill to have.)

+ Calligraphy

+ Painting, of course. (release your inner Basil.

Outings:

Museums

Art galleries

Places of historical interests (in the UK, this might be more easily accessible with things like the National Trust. If you visit often, it might be useful to invest in a membership card with English Heritage (England), Cadw (Wales), or a National Trust card. I have a Cadw card, and I've found that it's accepted all over the UK, in the same way an entrance card specific to whichever country you're in would be too. I hope that makes sense.)

Public executions

Pubs

+ Go to a Café and sketch the people around you (I hear that charcoal or graphite is preferable here.)

Parks

Gardens

Churches, quaker meeting houses, graveyards, synagogues (sometimes the only places that are quiet are places of worship, and a lot of the time, they will be very welcoming in letting people in just to sit and think. Just remember to be respectful: don't insult people for their faith; don't scorn the place of worship; respect people buried in graveyards; don't take pictures, tempting as it may be, just to be on the safe side.)

The theatre

The opera

Concerts (classical music or otherwise)

Social events (memorial services, tours of your local university, open days, anything. It's an opportunity to learn, and spark intrigue because of your darkly mysterious and alluring demeanour.)

Things to do when you're bored.

Writing essays (it's really nerdy, but I find writing essays really interesting if they're on a topic I'm passionate about. It doesn't have to be an intellectual masterpiece, it could be 'The Top Ten Sexiest Classical Writers' for all I care. Just make it fun. Plus it's always an added bonus to that pile of messy papers that aesthetify your desk.)

Research (as above.)

Daydream about how you could have prevented the burning of the Library of Alexandria

Plan a murder / heist. Thoroughly.

Read something light (Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, Wilkie Collins or Colin Dexter novels are really good for relaxing. Murder mysteries are always good for winding down a little, whilst still keeping an active mind, so I would recommend those, but really, read whatever you want.)

Dress up

Read aloud

Perform a play alone (or to a pet, if you have one)

If you play an instrument, play through all of the pieces in your repertoire

More daydreaming

Take baths

Fake your death (by murder, of course)

Draw or paint something (no, it doesn't have to be good. Just do it to relax. See what kind of things you can create, like designing Frankenstein's monster)

Write a narrative piece

Watch a movie. A whole movie. Just sit down and watch a movie, no getting up and walking around, no flicking back and forth, no checking your phone. Just enjoy a movie without distractions.

Watch every single 'Greek Gods as vines' video on YouTube and count it as studying.

(This is most definitely Pre-war or Modern! AU, so this'll be fun)

Cait:

•No car here.

•Instead, Cait drives a dark gray Harley Road King- outfitted completely with skulls and matching gloves.

•Fucking terrible to be on the road with.

Curie:

•Drives a rather cute, white Audi TT.

•Has several notebooks littering the glove box. Random coloured pens, EVERYWHERE.

•Probably has one of those infuriating ty beanie babies sitting upon the dash, staring into your soul with those inhuman beady eyes.

•Okay driver....

Danse:

(I've mentioned a long time ago that in my Pre-War AU, both Danse and Gage are some country bois..well here you go)

•Drives a hella nice, red, lifted Ford F-250 King Ranch. He loves it, but he usually just uses his "baby" to help haul things around.

•Take the love his canon counterpart has for his power armour and apply it to this Danse's truck.

•Has a sticker of his respective branch (I'm think Danse would be a marine or army man..idk) that he is too proud of and hangs his dog tags on the mirror.

•Stupidly strict about following all rules of the road.

Deacon:

•Ever seen one of those creepy vans with a painted tiger and wizard battling on the side? That's Deacon's.

•The back is renovated with a whole ass couch, tapestries and a funky disco ball.

•Calls it "the party wagon"

•Drives however he feels like.

Gage:

(Yee haw..)

•Drives an absolutely massive, dark gray, lifted 2019 F150 super duty. Has modifications on this bitch so expensive and wonderful that even Danse would shed a tear.

•Has a skull sticker on his back dash, a rifle behind the front seat, and brass knuckles in his glove box. Man is just waiting for a fight. Even the fucking antenna cover is shaped like a bullet...

•If you want to see your life flash before your eyes, ride with him. Uses the shoulder as a lane to pass people, thinks the speed limit is a mere suggestion, and is willing to ram someone for cutting him off.

Hancock:

•Thanks to his funds, he drives a pretty nice black Range Rover with fancy red interior.

•Advent drunk driver but somehow never gets caught.

Macready:

•Drives an old, yet dependable, 2004 Nissan x-terra. Boy, does that thing make him so close to cussing because of that thing. Duncan always laughs at him when that happens.

•It periodically stalls, but it's still faithful when he needs it....

•Mediocre driver..until someone cuts him off.

Piper:

•Drives a 2013 convertible, bright red, mustang!

•Blasts music and drives fast af when it's safe...but is strangely the safest one to ride with out of everyone else.

Maxson:

•Mr. Maxson, or rather the Maxson family is ridiculously rich..lemme just put that here first.

•Drives a badass, black Mclaren P1.

•Terrible driver.

Nick:

•Drives an astonishing cream coloured vintage Cadillac.

•Smells of smoke and coffee and the inside has cigarette ashes and littered newspapers.

•Drives waaaay too slow.

Old Longfellow:

•Does his boat count? Because he isn't really supposed to be driving that thing either but shit, it's better than getting caught driving his car with his suspended license having ass. Don't drink and drive, kids.

Preston:

•Drives a cactus green Ford Bronco. Freaking adores that thing too.

•Has a little rubber duckie that wears glasses perched up on the dashboard. It's name is Steven and he is considered Preston's good luck charm. Laugh all you want damnit.

•Frequently causes traffic jams because he'll let everyone out in front of him.

Sturges!:

•ooooh boy.

•This man loves his several cars, but his main one is a very sexy light blue '68 chevelle that he affectionately refers to as "sweetheart".

•He built the thing up from the ground practically,

•Has a relatively unhealthy attachment to that car and will beat someone up over sitting on it.

•Extremely careful driver...unless he is drag racing in one of his other babies, then it's game on.

X6-88:

•Also doesn't drive a car.

•Instead drives an all black CBR 1000RR Honda motorcycle.

•Has blue LED lights under the bike. Show off.

•Gives zero fucks about traffic rules and primarily drives at night.
