Twisted Tales:  The Mother
Mary was the daughter of a miller. Her mother taught her about witches and magic from a young age as her father pretended not to know what his wife and daughter did behind closed doors. They lived a modest life until Mary was old enough to learn how to spin. Her mother sat next to her and showed her how to spin the wool but something happened as Mary did it. The white wool turned into golden thread beneath her fingertips.
“You have a gift, my dear,” Her mother had beamed with pride. They used the golden thread in their next sewing project and sold it for a hefty sum in the village. Soon, Mary became known for her beautiful garments and their once humble mill was put on the map. People traveled from other villages to buy Mary and her mother’s creations and bought some flour while they were there. Soon they were able to move into a pricey new home in the center of the village.
Mary had just turned ten and was foolishly spinning her golden thread near an open window. She was in such a trance like state that she didn’t notice she had an audience,
“How did you do that?”
Mary looked up to see a girl her age staring in awe. Mary fumbled as she tried to come up with an answer but the girl was not fooled.
“You spun that plain wool into gold! I know what I saw,” And then the girl beamed. “Show me more!”
The girl’s name was Emily and she was the daughter of the local cobbler. Mary tentatively showed her new friend how she spun her golden thread and as she grew more confident, she showed Emily her family’s grimoire. Emily was fascinated and wanted to learn magic too.
“Mary spins gold,” Emily sang as she danced around the room in joy. “Mary gold, mary gold! Mary Mary Marigold!”
Emily came back the next day with a bouquet of marigolds and with that their destinies were cemented together. Emily was not a natural with magic as Mary was but she was still a daughter of Moon and was able to perform basic spells. The two grew older and their friendship turned into something more. Their first kiss felt so right they couldn’t imagine a world where their love was considered wrong. Still, they knew it must be kept a secret just as their magic was too.
By the time they reached adulthood, Mary was considered the town beauty. Both her parents had since passed away but she had plenty of money to live on her own. She employed Emily so the two could live together. For a few months everything was perfect. But then the Duke came.
The young Duke was handsome and most of the girls in the village fawned over him. He had heard about Mary’s talent as a seamstress and came to purchase a new set of clothes. When he laid eyes on the beautiful Mary he knew he must have her for his wife. It wouldn’t be so odd for the Duke to marry this well off merchant but when he presented his courtship, she declined. This did not deter the Duke a bit. He came back each day and presented her with lavish gifts but still she denied him.
Soon the Duke grew tired of these games.
“You know, my tailor had inspected the clothes I bought from you. He said the thread in the garment was pure gold. Where did you acquire such a thing?”
“He must be mistaken. It is simply gold-colored thread,” Mary responded nervously.
“I thought so too but I had a jeweler look at it as well. He said the same. He had never heard of such a thing. It shouldn’t be possible,” The Duke said with a steely look in his eyes.
Mary was nervous and chose her words carefully.
“I buy my supplies from a merchant across the sea. Perhaps it is not so strange a find there?”
“I thought you spun your own thread?”
“I do, but-”
The Duke didn’t let her finish. He had his men arrest her. They locked her in a room with wool, a spindle and instructions to make the golden thread by morning. It was a trap. If she spun the gold they would know she was a witch and have her executed, if she didn’t they would throw her in prison for being a fraud. Mary spent the night weeping, not knowing what to do.
It was still night when a guard came to release her from the room. He said nothing as he brought her to the Duke. Emily was there as well, her wrists shackled.
“Did you know you had a witch employed?” The Duke asked her. Mary was too confused and distressed to respond.
“She knew nothing, your grace,” Emily said.
“What is this?” Mary asked.
“Your employee confessed. She said she was responsible for spinning the golden thread.”
“No-”
“She showed us,” And the Duke held up a spool of thread, not golden but silver. “She made this for us before our very eyes.”
Everything that followed happened quickly. Emily was condemned to death for being a witch. Mary begged and pleaded with the Duke but he would not be swayed until Mary finally agreed to marry him. Emily would be banished instead. The Duke allowed his fiance a final goodbye the night before she was to leave.
“Emily why? How?” Mary sobbed.
“I had been practicing spinning silver thread for some months now. It takes a lot of my magic but I was finally able to do it. I wanted to surprise you one day with it,” Emily explained.
“But why did you confess for me?”
“It was the only way. The Duke wasn’t ever going to let you go Marigold.”
“I’ll marry him but I’ll find you again Emily. I promise. I love you.”
Emily smiled sadly. “I love you too, my Marigold.”
Emily was gone the next day and Mary was married shortly after. She found herself pregnant with the Duke’s child shortly after. She thought that any child that came from this union would be one she despised but she now only felt love for the daughter she was sure it was going to be. This child would not be possible without Emily’s sacrifice. She was created with the help of Emily’s love and she would be just as much Emily’s daughter as Mary’s.
Mary had refrained from saying anything about Emily to the Duke since her banishment. She did not want him to discover what the true relationship between them was. One night as they lay in bed together, The Duke sweetly rubbed Mary’s pregnant belly and she found the courage to ask him what she had been wanting to for months.
“I want to sew the baby a blanket,” She told him.
“I’ll have some fabric and thread ordered.”
“How lovely it would have looked with the gold thread I used to work with,” The Duke said nothing in response so Mary plunged ahead. “I wonder, where did you end up sending my former employee?”
“What do you mean?”
“When you banished her.”
“Oh, you were in such an emotional state when that happened. I know it was a shock to find out someone you worked so closely with was a witch. Fear not, my love, that witch no longer walks this earth.”
With that Mary’s blood ran cold. Her husband didn’t seem to notice or care that she did not speak for the remainder of the night. Mary wanted to scream, she wanted to break the windows and tear the bed sheets apart. She wanted to use her magic to kill her husband right then and there. But she didn’t and she wouldn’t. She’d raise their daughter and any others they’d have. She’d teach them magic and she’d teach them to be stronger than she ever could be.
And one day they would punish their father for his sins.
