~ JK POV ~

A haze of darkness loomed in the early hours of the morning. The night sky should've been clear according to the weather icons on Jungkook's phone. Could it be that his eyes are deceiving him? Were they hazy and cloudy? If he rubbed them, would the sky finally be clear? Or maybe you have blurred his vision, distorted his mind.

As if you weren’t already on his mind 24/7, 365 days for the last seven years. Your prodigal return has made him want to be close to you again, see how you were doing, and see if you had somehow found a way to forgive him. Your appearance at tonight’s party confirmed you must’ve hated him and could never find it in your heart to forgive him. At least, that’s what he thought.

On his late-night drive after dropping off Josie, he went the long way home through the city streets. He ended up at the park where you used to stargaze when you needed to clear your mind, and it was one of those nights for him.

You had taken over every fiber of his being, capturing his heart and holding him hostage. You’ve haunted him every day of his life since you left. At least when the two of you were in school, he could see you in class and the hallways, but once you left, there was no way to keep track of you, that is, until you started posting your college adventures on Instagram. He’d see your stories and how you’d come home to visit your parents and old friends, but of course, you wouldn’t see him. Why would you? He hurt you.

He replays tonight’s events—studying every word, every facial expression, your body language. He’s looking for a way to make it right, a way back into your heart. He doesn’t like it when you’re hurting, doesn’t like it when you’re mad at him, and especially doesn’t like it when you hate him.

He wished he could redo the last seven years and the moment when he decided to kiss Josie. He should've just left Jimin’s and come to yours, confessed his feelings, said how much he’d missed you, maybe even been brave enough to ask if he should go with you to college. Maybe he could’ve saved a lot of heartache for you, himself, and even Josie.

He took a deep breath, exhaling the unease lingering throughout his body. Opening his eyes, he realized the sky finally cleared out. He tucked one hand behind his head, and with the other, his finger traced constellations into the shape of animals—a little game you used to play together.

Thoughts raced through his mind: Do you still have a love for stargazing? Did you find a new spot? Did you have someone to accompany you? Or did you go by yourself? He guessed he’d never find out the answers to his questions.

“You’re coming in late. Or early. Were you with Josie?” Jimin’s sitting at the dining table, sipping on his coffee.

Jungkook shook his head. “Just out.”

“Man, it was good to see ____, right? I haven’t seen her since we graduated. Did you catch up with her?” He shifted in his seat, his foot pushing against the table’s leg, causing his chair to lean back. He licked his lips, suppressing a smile.

“Kind of.” Jungkook shrugged.

The chair made a loud thump when Jimin leaned forward. He set his coffee aside, his eyes narrowed, hands folded. “What happened between you guys, anyway? You were so close in high school, and whenever I ask you, you always change the topic.”

Jungkook looked at his friend, hoping he’d get the drift and move on from this conversation. He wasn’t keen on being bombarded with questions this early in the morning. He pulled out a chair, the legs screeching against the floor as he buried his face in his arms on the table.

“Or you quiet down whenever I bring her up. Well, whatever happened, you should just make out—I mean makeup with her since she’s back,” Jimin suggested, grinning at his mistake.

Jungkook looked up. “I don’t think she wants to see me.”

“See her anyway.”

Jungkook raised his eyebrows.

“What? You’ll either sit here and keep wondering what could’ve been, or you can talk to her like an adult and hash things out—get everything out in the open.”

“I hurt her, Jimin.”

“So? Go and apologize.”

“I don’t think she’ll accept it.”

“It’ll be up to her to decide, but at least she’ll hear it from you.” Jimin sipped his coffee again. “And don’t think I haven’t seen you lurking on her Instagram throughout these years.” He shook his head and chuckled. “Your Instagram handle is the alphabet without ‘JK’ in it—so obvious.”

Jungkook's eyes widened. He thought he was careful all these years, hardly posting anything but random food dishes he’s cooked.

Jimin let out a hearty laugh. “Oh—you thought you were slick, huh? I’m quite the detective myself, Jeon.” Jimin pushed his chair out to stand, massaging his friend’s shoulder, shaking his head at him. “It’s time, my friend. Don’t let the past continue to haunt you.”

He lightly tapped his fingers on the table, debating his next move. He knew he had to break things off with Josie once and for all. No more letting her hover, giving into her, or letting her manipulate him. He let her have too many years of him–it was finally time to cut off the head of the snake.

~ reader pov ~

The early morning sun peeked through your curtains, beaming rays of light reflecting off of your mirror, making you sneak a glimpse of the time on your phone.

7:30 AM. It’s too early for anyone to function like an average person.

Propping yourself against your pillows, you begin scrolling through Instagram. You were tagged in one of Jimin’s photos.

The caption read: Look who’s back.

You were tipsy when the photo was taken. You had let Jimin wrap his arm around you, kissing your cheek, as you made a kissy face at Lana, who snapped the picture.

You looked at the amount of likes and comments. Jimin was still popular after high school. Your finger tapped on ‘view all 90 comments’, and then you realized it was just Jimin and Josie arguing back and forth in the comments about you.

Rolling your eyes, you were ready to exit the app, but then you couldn’t help but notice the username of ‘abcdefghi_lmnopqrstuvwxyz’ in the comment section, also telling Josie to ‘stop.’ You recognized the username because they liked a few of your posts and had seen your stories but never interacted.

You never bothered to look at everyone who followed you, but this username was too creative not to have a look.

When you clicked on the username, their profile picture was a sunset; their bio only had an emoji of a cookie and photos of food dishes. You guessed this person was an aspiring chef. Everything they posted looked scrumptious.

A series of knocks on your door interrupted your train of thought. It’s so early. Who could be here at this hour?

You peered through the peephole, your hand ready to unlock it, until you saw it was none other than Lana. There was a burning feeling in your chest, and your jaw clenched as you debated whether you wanted to let her in. She claimed not to know who Jimin’s roommates were, and you so happened to come to the party where Jeon Jungkook lived? Coincidence? Yeah, right.

“I can hear you breathing on the other side of the door,” she said, moving back to show you she had brought coffee from one of your favorite places.

You unlocked the door knob but left the chain lock intact. Opening the door, you peeked through, staring at the coffee in her hand.

“Leave the coffee, and I shall let you live to see another day.”

Lana rolled her eyes. “I know what you’re thinking–I set you up, but I swear on my mother’s grave that I did not know Jimin and Jungkook were living together.”

You tilted your head and crossed your arms. “You are correct. I believe you set me up, and I won’t be forgiving you.”

Lana sighed, digging through her bag. “I have something else for you too.” She pulled out the very thing you were looking for last night–your blush-pink panties.

You reach out to grab them, but she withdraws, clutching them in her hand. “I did you a favor by swiping them, washing them, and getting your favorite coffee. You’re still not going to open the door for me?”

You huffed, closing the door and unlocking the chain. Crossing your arms, you stood in the way, unwilling to let her in.

She showed off her biggest grin, holding up the tray of coffee and your panties.

You grabbed the coffee before grabbing your panties, leaving the door open if she willingly wanted this to be her last day on earth.

Lana follows you, closing the door and plopping beside you on the couch.

“Anything else you need to get off your chest before you breathe your last breath?” you ask before sipping the mint mojito iced coffee. You forgot how much you loved this drink.

“Yeah. How did the conversation with Jungkook go?”

“I swear to god, you’re addicted to drama.”

“As long as it doesn’t involve me, then I’m all ears,” she beamed from ear to ear, sipping her coffee. “And I also want to make sure you’re okay.” She elbows you before laying her head on your shoulder.

You couldn’t be upset with Lana. You knew she just wanted you to heal from what happened with Jungkook.

Last night felt like a fever dream, bumping into Jungkook. He sprang up on you with no warning. You had no time to prepare yourself—your heart, for what you’d say.

It’s like you had traveled back to that 18-year-old girl watching her best friend repeatedly hurt her. The scene replayed in your mind like an endless film reel–Jungkook and Josie holding hands, finding a letter in your locker, tearfully reading it in your room, and realizing you didn’t have a friend anymore after that day.

“So?”

“He blames me for everything that happened.”

Lana’s eyes widened, and jaw dropped. She put down her coffee, got up, and pulled her hair back. “You better hold me down before I beat his ass.”

You dragged her back beside you. “Stop being so dramatic.”

“How was it your fault?”

“He said he was upset that I was leaving for college and didn’t care to include him in the conversation. Then he went to one of Jimin's parties and kissed Josie, and they started dating.”

Lana’s upper lip raised in annoyance, glancing up at the ceiling. “I'm gonna punch him and his little girlfriend in the face the next time I see them.”

“And apparently, he says they’re not together or whatever.”

She gasped in disbelief. “Not together? She was practically all over him! And he was letting her do it!”

“That’s what I said, but he says it's complicated.”

“What are you gonna do?”

“What am I going to do? Nothing? Absolutely nothing. Avoid them like the plague. What else am I supposed to do?”

“What if he comes looking for you?”

The thought crossed your mind, but you had nothing to say to him. What more did he want from you? Since he blamed you, it’s not like he’d come asking for forgiveness.

“I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t have moved back.”

“Stop. I'm so happy you’re back. This place is so fucking lame without you.” Lana curled herself into your couch, hooking her arm in yours.

“Yeah, I didn’t think I had to endure all this drama with Jungkook the week I returned.”

“Maybe you should just talk to him and clear the air once and for all,” Lana suggested.

“I don’t know if I can do that without strangling him.”

“I’ll bail you out of jail, don’t worry, or I can help you. We can be cellmates.”

You loved how at least one of your best friends would go to such lengths for you. “God–I don’t wanna be an adult. I don’t want to talk to him.”

“I know, but I bet you’ll feel a million times better if you do.”

You didn’t want to hear the truth but you knew it was what you needed to do. You and Jungkook had unfinished business. Maybe it’s better to just talk to him and close that chapter of your life and finally be able to move on.

You waited a few days to call Jungkook in case Jimin told him he gave you his number. You didn’t want to seem desperate; at least, it would be at your discretion. You’d be more prepared with your heart and your mind.

You sat there, staring at his name, tapping on the screen, and before you knew it, the line began ringing. Ah, fuck.

There’s no going back now.

Hello?

“Hey, Kook. It’s ___.” You can hear him shifting through the line.

Oh, hey. Jungkook cleared his throat. What’s up?

“I wanted to see if you’d be up for coffee or something. If you’re not busy, that is.”

Like today?

You hummed.

Just tell me where and what time.

“Philz Coffee at 2?”

Yeah! I’ll see you then.

You quickly ended the call. Well, the easy part was done. Now, onto the rest.

Even for a Thursday afternoon, the street where the coffee shop was located was rather crowded. You blamed the increased remote jobs and everyone flocking to work from there instead of their homes.

Walking toward the shop, you looked up to see Jungkook sitting outside with two coffees on the table.

He gave a small wave and stood when you approached him. “Hey!” His voice was enthusiastic as he flashed a warm smile, dimple on display. Jungkook gestured for you to sit.

“Do you still like mint mojito iced coffees?”

You chuckled to yourself. You didn’t think he would still remember your coffee order. “Yeah, I do.”

“Cool, figured you still did.”

You gave a half-smile.

Jungkook leaned forward in his seat, eyes on you. “So, why did you want to meet up?”

Your lips thinned before you cleared your throat. “I guess we have some unfinished business.”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

You sighed, pulling yourself together to turn to him, looking him in the eye finally. Never in a million years did you think you would be sitting here, talking. His doe eyes sparkled, his boyish charm lingered, and that sweet smile made you swoon.

“I’m gonna say my piece, and then if you have anything to add, go for it.”

He nodded, listening intently to your following words.

Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath. “When you stopped talking to me—it hurt, fucked me up for a long time. I convinced myself for years I was over it, but that wasn’t the case at Jimin’s.”

It felt weird to finally say everything that had been building up aloud in front of him.

“It was hard going through college without you. I couldn't talk to you when I wanted, come over when I was bored, and experience new things with you. It was like this big piece of my life was missing, and no one could fill it. Sometimes, a song would come on shuffle that reminded me of you; then I'd get sad because I didn't know your new favorite songs or if you had seen the new Marvel movie.”

Most of all, you missed his presence and how he’d light up when he was excited to show you something or how he’d put a smile on your face when you were down.

“You were my best friend, Kook. I shared everything with you. So it hurt when you felt like you couldn’t talk to me. I would’ve understood if you couldn’t be friends with me because of Josie—I mean, it would’ve sucked big time, but I would never want you to feel like you can’t be honest with me.”

Jungkook stayed quiet for a bit before responding. “I’m sorry about what happened. I was hurting too, and I guess I wanted you to hurt too.”

“Well, it worked.” You let out a sad chuckle; your hand began playing nervously with the coffee cup before you.

He looks at you, scanning your face. “This might not mean anything now, but I know you. I know what songs you like, movies you watched, what made you sad and happy.”

Your gaze slowly flicked to his, your eyebrows knitted in confusion.

“I don’t want to sound like a creep or anything, but I’ve been following you on Instagram.”

“You have an Instagram account?”

“Uh, yeah. I just don’t post my face or anything.” He pulled out his phone to show you.

Your jaw dropped. “Oh my god. You’re alphabet boy?”

“Alphabet boy?” Jungkook’s forehead furrowed.

As soon as he said that, you began to piece everything together. So he was on social media. He was just good at hiding it.

“So, you’ve been keeping up with everything I’ve been doing?”

“You were my best friend. I missed you and wanted to know what your life was like.”

You didn’t know how to process this information. You had been lurking on Instagram, trying to get a glimpse of Jungkook, but after all these years, he was trying to keep a part of you with him.

“Just because you’ve liked my posts or watched my stories doesn’t mean you know me.”

He nodded in agreement. “You’re right. I don’t, but I would like to get to know you again.”

“What about Josie? What is she going to think?” You didn’t want to get in the way of whatever they had going on.

“I’ve tried breaking up with her multiple times, and she keeps on coming back, and I’m pretty dumb for letting her back in. I think we’ve just gotten into that rhythm where we’ve been comfortable with each other that it’s hard to let it go, you know?”

You chuckled to yourself. He was never really good at speaking up, was he?

He looks at you. “Do you think we can start over?”

You take a deep breath. “I don’t know. I—I don’t think I can lose you as a friend again.”

“You won’t,” he responded immediately.

You liked how sure he was of himself. That nothing or no one could get in the way of a new friendship again. But with Josie still in the picture, you didn’t think it would be as easy as he was making it seem.

A car drives by, music playing loudly from their speakers. It stopped the conversation, giving you time to think.

A part of you would love to be friends again, and the other part was ready to let go and start fresh. You weren’t the same person you were in high school. You had grown up, lived, and loved a little, and after finally getting to speak everything you’ve held onto—you were ready to close that chapter you had kept open for so long.

Jungkook waved his hand, calling out to you.

“Hmm?”

“What happens now?”

You shrugged, and your mouth twisted to the side. “I don’t know, Kook. How about we just take it one day at a time? And I don’t mean like we talk every day or something, but if we see each other, we’ll be able to say ‘hi.’”

Jungkook nodded. “Baby steps.”

“Right. Baby steps.”

“I can do that.”

JAMAN Dinner. Friday. 6 PM.

You Why, hello, Jimin.

JAMAN Right, hi. Dinner. Friday. 6 PM. Be there.

You You didn’t tell me where.

JAMAN My place.

You Is Jungkook going to be there?

JAMAN No, he’s outta town. Going somewhere with Josie.

You tut. Of course, he hasn’t broken it off with Josie. Why would he? No one changes within a week, right?

You Okay, fine. See you on Friday. Can I bring anything?

JAMAN Just yourself 😘

Friday.

JAMAN Hey, I’m running late from work. But make yourself at home! I’m going to grab some food on the way back, too.

You couldn’t believe you agreed to come to Jimin’s place for dinner. Meeting up somewhere would’ve been safer if you bumped into Jungkook again. But you two did decide to take baby steps.

Keying in the code, you stepped in, eyes wandering around the house. Surprisingly, it was well-kept. No throw pillow or blanket is out of place. All the coasters were neatly lined up. Even the house plants were flourishing.

You closed the door, then heard a shatter of glass hitting the ground along with a ‘fuck’. You didn’t see any cars outside when you arrived. Maybe Jimin was dropped off.

“Hello? Jimin?”

You walked into the kitchen, peering around the corner, and saw someone’s head bobbing up and down.

“Kook?”

He looked up with doe eyes, and his jaw opened. “Oh—hey.”

“What are you doing here?”

Jungkook furrowed his eyebrows. “I live here,” he said slowly, sweeping the glass in a dustpan.

“Yes, I know that. But where’s Jimin?”

“Jimin’s at work. He asked me to make dinner.”

You huffed, throwing your head back. “Did you plan this?”

“Plan what?”

“This. Us. Dinner.”

“What? No. I didn’t know you were coming over.”

Your phone buzzed in your back pocket.

JAMAN Oh, hey, friend. I can’t make it to dinner. Guess you’ll just have to eat with Kook. 😘😘

You I’M GONNA BLOCK YOU PARK JIMIN

JAMAN 😘 I love you.

“I’m—just going to go. See you later, Kook,” you said, turning around to leave.

“Where are you going?”

“Home. Bye, Kook.”

“Why don’t you stay? I already made dinner and don’t want it to go to waste.”

You stopped in your tracks. Whatever he made smelled good.

He set down the dustpan and walked over to you. “Come on. It’s just dinner.”

You turned back to him, scanning him from head to toe. Why did he have to look so boyfriend in his all-black outfit and matching baseball hat?

You pointed your chin to the ground, staring at him. “Just dinner.”

SOOOO let's spill some tea, shall we. *crack knuckles*

Varric:

First impression: "Omg that's some chest hair." Of course. Nah it was like at first sight even without those, give me an unreliable sarcastic narrator and I'll be content.

Impression now: After reading some analyses and writing him... I still like him a lot as a character, but it's true that he's for sticking with the status quo and is terrified of changes, BUT he changes his mind if you push him enough (a lot), so that's ok. Leave Bianca dude seriously I'm suffering for your sake.

Favorite moment: The fake solo EPIC fight at Bartrand's. Iconic, you go man. Also, the descriptions on ships in Hard in Hightown without a hint of research. He just doesn't care and it works and it's a best seller. You go, Varric.

Idea for a story: I don't think anything about him will ever top the fic "Ask Varric" but I'd love to be proven wrong of course. (It's the fic I read when I'm sad it just sparks joy). I'd just love to see him coping with a Spirit Cole and learning that it's not the end of the world, he's still him. Alas I tend to focus more on my OCs. Maybe I'll try it one day or another, but it's not that day (and if you are reading this and find it a good prompt, be my guest, write it and please tag me)

Unpopular opinion: A centrist character that doesn't want change is actually a good counterpoint for Hawke.

Favorite relationship: *looks at DadWolf AU* AH-EHM. No, joking, I love a good fic that ships him with Cassandra.

Favorite headcanon: Bisexual in the closet, clearly had a one-night with Solas when they both got drunk I read the comic panels and listen LISTEN no homo bro

Krem:

First impression: I think I thought he looked very cool and had a very nice voice, I liked how professional he was and the dynamics of the Chargers from the start, the more he spoke the more I liked him.

Impression now: As above, I can't say much on how it was written but I like him very much as a character, I wish we saw more of him in game and that he was a romanceable option but alas

Favorite moment: I live for his dynamic with Bull they're just... The ultimate found family and they melt my little dark heart.

Idea for a story: Oh damn... Anything exploring his character more, honestly. I will be honest and say I'm not really shipping him with Maryden (I don't like Maryden much...?). Maybe something having him and Dorian in the same room. Add Fenris for the perfect Tevinter reunion and just dig in the chaos. Hateful Eight style. (Sorry Dor I don't think you're surviving this in one piece)

Unpopular opinion: Is there an unpopular opinion about Krem? No, I think my opinion on him are pretty average.

Favorite relationship: Chargers the ultimate Found Family all the way. With Bull, as in platonic. Or you know what. He makes plushies. Josie plays with them. KremxJosephine??? (it's farfetched and I really thought of it right now and with a beer in my belly. But...)

Zevran:

First impression: "Dude who gave you the assassin licence, Elmo?" No listen Zevran is the epitome of the character I like most. Cocky, histrionic, there for show, very charismatic. I was there and I liked him from the start.

Impression now: Same as above, it didn't change much. I only love him more after knowing all of it, he deserves all the love and praise he can get and some more.

Favorite moment: His recruitment is honestly an iconic epic fail come on what's there not to love. But also his banter with Alistair.

Idea for a story: I will write it sooner or later: Zevran and the Warden making spritz in the camp with what they could find/distill themselves. Listen, Antiva is Venezia, hence it's a SHAME that one of his gifts is not a glass of Spritz (the most typical cocktail from the... City or region I won't say or Ali will beat me with a newspaper if I get it wrong). In my mind the Dalish can and will distill alcohol with everything, as good old south mediterranean old people, the Arlathvens are basically a big reunion to share drinks. I will sooner or later write Alyra missing some good homemade liquor, him missing spritz, and the pair combining forces to recreate something with the resources they have. Raiding a tavern, Alyra distracts the host and Zevran slips behind the counter and steals Aperol.

Unpopular opinion: Not really an unpopular opinion but he's Italian not Spanish. The name also sounds from Veneto, if you read it with the accent on the a. Zevràn. It's me being picky, tho, I really don't have ANYTHING against people portraying him as Spanish and using Spanish for Antivan! I saw some very nice iterations. I don't think I have opinions about him that are really unpopular tho.

Favorite relationship: I'm a sucker for a good Zevalistair fic. I said it.

Favorite headcanon: Even in a platonic relationship, he still checks in regularly with his friends from the Blight. They all have a discount.

Sten:

First impression: I was pretty cold about him? Like ok, I'll free him just to piss the Nun off, but meh it sounds like a character I don't really like, too much a boring Paladin for me, meh.

Impression now: He likes cookies and he approves when you disagree with him? OMG I STAN *badum tsssss* Jokes beside, I think he's kind of… A missed chance? He's an interesting character and believe me I generally find his kind of character extremely boring, but… He doesn't have as much insight as the others have, it would have been nice to see more, have some more cut scenes with him or a more complex personal quest that wasn't just a "find the missing object".

Favorite moment: The cookie admission.

Idea for a story: Him and the Warden meeting again, with him as the Arishok. A good old reunion.

Unpopular opinion: I think the real missed chance in romancing a Qunari is not him but the Arishok in DA2 and I will die on this hill.

Favorite relationship: He and the Warden. Or with Morrigan.

My top 5 albums of 2023 that I want everyone to listen to, tentatively (since there's a LOT, lol), and I know I've already talked high praise of many of these lol, are...

Lead Into Gold -- The Eternal Present. I've gushed endlessly about this album, but my adoration for it cannot be understated. Paul Barker outdid himself; he's been responsible for and/or involved in some of my favorite projects of all time long before now, but admittedly it was this album that really made me reevaluate how much I've almost taken for granted his artistry. It is such a lovely, uniform piece of art from beginning to end, I could go on and on about how excited I am by the composition, but I'll just leave it at: It is an AMAZING piece of modern electroindustrial from one of the legends of the genre and it is worth a listen. Song recommendation: "The Final Blows."

IAMX -- Fault Lines1. IAMX has been one of my favorite artists since, like, 9th grade, but this is another case of IMO an artist completely outdoing themselves. Chris is an amazing musician but Fault Lines takes things up a notch IMO with a whole new level of heaviness and intensity, experimentation, masterful modular synth work, vocal expertise, and the dark, sensual theatricality he's so iconic for. I seriously think this album potentially ushers in a whole new era for him, it's PHENOMENAL and I think everybody should check it out. It's technically an EP, so it only takes like 30 minutes to get through. Song recommendation: "Disciple."

DIN -- Up. Something more obscure, love for local icons in the LA scene. Greg Vand is the second member of High Functioning Flesh and this is his project with his wife Josie. I love their work and I think "Up" is so delightful; it's got a weird, dreamy, dancey electronic feel that alternates between synthpop and something more techno/house. I really love this release and I really loved getting to be there for the release party, too. Heavily encourage checking it out if you're looking for brand new music from a smaller artist who really deserves the attention. Song recommendation: "Try."

Male Tears -- KRYPT. A culmination of the past year or so of dancefloor hit singles, "Krypt" comes together as this extremely explosive gothic darkwave / alt synthpop / EBM blend that just so successfully captures the Los Angeles dark alt scene right now. I think everyone should listen to this album, it's so strong and so fun and just totally to die for. Song recommendation: "SLEEP 4EVER."

Sextile -- Push. Sorry for being from LA and for loving electronic music, but "Push" was suuuuuch a standout release for me. Unabashed party music, blend of a sort of throwback 90s/2000s sound while still being very fresh and very clearly stemming from the dark electronic scene, I love the amount of genre bending that Sextile did here. Inspiration from EDM and rave / house music, electropunk, classic EBM, trip hop, drum and bass, just such a love letter to doing lots of drugs while dancing with strangers. Song recommendation: "Plastic."

There was SO MUCH good music in 2023 and I feel a little bad not diversifying the genres more here, but what can I say 🤷‍♂️ I love weird electronic music it cannot be helped.

i mean, we know we see cheryl in the dark room, there's a big blossom plot coming up and obviously they have to follow up on that plot, either in 17 or 18. but why wouldn't they have room for sideplots? josie is the A plot of the episode, but not the only one. it's not like her season 5 episode where it's all about her.

Tekken 8 Wishlist

So I’ve been all up the Tekken 8 hype train ever since that teaser trailer dropped and I’ve been playing a lot of Tekken 7, I even played some Dark Resurrection, Tag 2 and Tekken 6, and I decided I’d share with you some of the features I’d hope to see in Tekken 8.

I tried my best to come up with a balanced set of characters that best represent the series (with #1 being the most iconic / representative) and not necessarily who I like so I did my best to set my bias aside lol.

Now, let me make some things clear. I don’t want characters to be DLC, but since it’s a very common practice for fighting games nowadays, I’ve come to expect them to happen, so if they absolutely have to have DLC, I’d rather legacy characters are part of the base game and DLC are newer characters than are not necessarily as closely-tied to the core Tekken experience yet. I also know fighting games don’t really do unlockable characters any more, but I think it would be fun to see this “lost” feature return. Gives you a motive to play through arcade mode with as many different characters as possible to see who you get next!

Outfits

Tekken had this “tradition” of sorts from the first game up until Tekken 6 were the 1P costume was the character’s “battle” costume and the 2P was a more “casul” outfit. For example, in Tekken 3 Jin’s 1P outfit is his trademark flame pants and his 2P was a leather “biker” sort of outfit. This was not explicitly true for everyone but it was the case for most of them and I think it’s much better than having a palette swap for 2P like we got in Tag 2 and Tekken 7. This is just lazy in my opinion.

Character customization is a cool way for player’s to express their individual tastes and style, but it has also gone v down hill in Tag 2 and 7. Too many generic and extremely fucking ugly items. Customization was at its best in Tekken 6 where each individual character had their own personal “wardrobe” of sorts with items that fit the style and characterization of each individual fighter. That was a much better execution and I hope we can return to that era of customization. At the same time I also desperately hope random ghost characters are left untouched like I’m so sick of fighting all these goofy weird creations of Bandai Namco. Just leave the customization up to each individual player to enage with.

I would also love to see character’s legacy / trademark outfits be included either as unlockable outfits or the customization system or, worst case scenario, DLC..

Stages

I loved it when Tekken based its stages on real-life places like in Tag 2 or Tekken 1. In Tekken 1′s case the stages were literal recreations of real-world locations while in Tag 2 they were just inspired by various countries and given a “title”, let’s say, describing which part of the world they take place in. I think either way it’s fine, a nice little touch to make people all around the world feel like they are part of Tekken. Completely unintrusive and harmless too, it didn’t feel forced.

I also think it’s very important that each character has their own stage. Now, obviously, making a personalised stage for each individual character would be madness. Wonderful, but still madness, because even if you don’t take my proposed 48-character roster into account, Tekken tends to have a lot of characters. So, characters that share a friendship or rivarly or are from the same region could share a stage and maybe a different BGM could play depending on which fighter you’re up against, like in Tekken 3. Stages being tied to the characters was a huge way of characterisation and storytelling in the past and I don’t see why this trend can’t continue, even in Tekken 7, during their character prologues each fighter was introduced in a specific stage that seemed to fit them so it’s not like the concept has been completely abandoned anyway.

Music

Having past BGMs selectable was a great idea in Tag 2 and 7 and I’d love to see it return. They could possibly even take is a step further and steal a page from DOA’s book and add the option for BGM to either be applied to each individual stage or each individual fighter instead. Unlike DOA though, Tekken not every character has at least one already established BGM, because they only did it for Tekken 3 and Tekken 2 so any characters added later to the series don’t really have one and, like with the stages, it would be too much trouble to create a theme for every single new character from the Tekken 4 era up until now.

Story Mode

Honestly I think they nailed it with Tekken 7 so I wouldn’t chang much EXCEPT those awful side hoe character chapters. That felt so forced for most of the characters. Like, they didn’t have to pair all of them up, they could just fight their rival character and if one character was rival to more than one characters then so be it. The fact that we also played the same battle with two different characters also made it pointless because we got no clear outcome for any of them.

Arcade Mode

I wish to see a proper return of Arcade mode. Eight different stages, no goofy customized characters, seventh stage is each character’s Rival battle and each character gets a little prologue to explain why the fuck they decide to fight in this tournament and an ending. Ideally, I’d like to see a canon ending for each character. Not all of them can win the tournament (and come to think of it none of them did in either Tekken 6 or 7) so the ending could either showcase the aftermath of their rival battle or what they ended up doing after the tournament, depending on each fighter’s daily life / occupation / goals. Rival buttles should have little cutscenes before and after each fight (Like in Tekken 5 and Dark Resurrection) and each fighter you encounter should be fought in their “native” stage. I’m very insistent on the no customisation / yes native stage aspects because I think when you “meet” a character in battle, say for the first time, subtle things like what they (normally) wear, what they say in their intros or win poses and where they come from are very important details when getting to know a character. Maybe you actually end up liking them and even deciding to play as them! Finally, I really liked how after each Arcade run you got stats for character usage and Arcade scores. I’d like to see that return.

Survival Mode

No reason why it shouldn’t return or was cut from Tekken 7 in the first place.

Team Battle

Another fun mode that was unfortunately cut. I have spend hours playing Team Battles with my friend. It must return!

Versus Mode

I mean, obviously, but what I also need is the ability to be able to fight against the CPU. Literally all the other fighters have it, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, even SoulCalibur which is also Bandai Namco’s, so I don’t see why Tekken never gives you that option. Most of my friends are not interested in Tekken or don’t always have the money to pay for an online subscription (which is also true for me) so being able to choose your own fighter, a rival character and have them fight in the stages you want with the costumes you want when you literally have no friends is a fun distraction lol.

Ghost Battle

Rising through the ranks can be great practice before taking your favourite fighter Online so that’s one thing they have been doing right, but were they screwed it up in Tekken 7 was by not letting you choose your next opponent yourself. That was dumb because the game likes to constantly match you up against higher or lower levelled opponents on purpose which I think was probably to make this mode artificially last longer since there was literally nothing else to do other than beat the story in the base game, but now that they made millions off of 7 they ought to have a bigger budget for a less empty base Tekken 8 game so they no longer have this excuse.

Tekken Force

A Tekken trademark. I understand that maybe having a cast of 40+ characters and a cinematic story mode are more of a priority than Tekken Force but maybe it can be included as part of the main story, like what Street Fighter 6 seems to be doing with World Tour or what Tekken itself did with 6 and Scenario Campaign. Again, only as a worst case scenario, have it as some sort of DLC.

Tekken Bowl

A very underutilised bonus mode that is also very unique and very fun. I’d more than love to see it return. This time however I want it as part of the base game.
