Influential RPG adventure writer, artist, and video game creator Jennell Jaquays has died.
She was a founder of the Dungeoneer zine before it was sold to Judges Guild. Her D&D adventures Dark Tower and Caverns of Thracia became classics, often studied as examples of adventure design. She also wrote and illustrated for TSR, Metagaming, Steve Jackson Games, and many other publishers. Her video game career included developing many of Coleco's titles in the 1980s and level design for the Quake sequels at id Software in the 90s, and she co-founded the SMU Guildhall video game program.
She recently was hospitalized for symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome, and a GoFundMe to cover her medical expenses is still active.

📣Inevitable is live on Backer-Kit!
Inevitable is an Arthurian Western ttrpg in which your party of disastrously sad cowboy knights fail to stop the apocalypse...
Tumblr media
Knights and wizards have defended the Kingdom of Myth for centuries. These lands have known peace and prosperity, but soon they shall lie barren.
The Prophets have declared that your city shall burn and Myth will fall. All those who follow your King shall die. It is INEVITABLE.
But you shall defy fate. Myth will not end while you bear arms.
You will fail, but as long as there are still stories, they will sing of you!
Tumblr media
Inevitable is a new roleplaying game system from SoulMuppet Publishing, the creators and publishers behind Orbital Blues, Best Left Buried, Stygian Library and dozens of other RPG systems and adventures.
The book is a focused system for a play-to-lose Arthurian Western campaign. But what does this mean?
Arthurian: Sad knights. A king who is doing his best (but badly). Foolish virtue quests doomed to fail. Women in lakes.
Western: Sweeping deserts. Dusty heroes wearing big boots, bigger hats. Can of beans cooked on a campfire. Six shooters.
Play-To-Lose: Your kingdom is going to be destroyed. It is Inevitable. Play to find out how, but there's no way to win.
Focused System: Your characters serve the King of Myth, and you are trying to prevent the destruction of his kingdom and your civilisation. The system is linked intrinsically to telling this story in this system, and finely tuned to create the perfect Arthurian Western campaign
Campaign: While Inevitable provides options for one-shots and short campaigns (including the one in our Quickstart), the material in the book supports a full length campaign with minimal prep. A traditional Inevitable campaign runs for 3-6 months, choosing 3 of the available 6 Dooms. However, should you choose to use all the material and embark on this quixotic, almost impossible quest to save the world you could well be playing for years.

Adam Driver as "Man in Black"
"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.
The desert was the apotheosis of all deserts, huge, standing to the sky for what might have been parsecs in all directions."

Some test footage from a restoration I did a while back of an original Milton Bradley Dark Tower game from 1981. (Replaced a bad dc/dc buck converter)
This game came out during an odd, short period of time when microprocessors were cheap, but LCDs were not out yet. So you had this computing power available for games, but no way to display output cheaply and portably.
Dark Tower solved this using a spinning drum and lights to show the action, along with an LED numeric display. Here we see a battle between 10 warriors and 5 Brigands (spoiler, the Brigands get their asses kicked)

Marten Broadcloak, Walter O'Dim, Randall Flagg, The Grinning Man, The Man with No Face, The Man in Black
It only takes a week or two to break a god-fearing man: Ease him in with the small talk (and then plant ideas ‘till his ears fall off). Finlee played that guard like a fiddle, turned his own fears into a honing missile.    “Father, can you save my soul?”   “First you gotta bring me a little C4.”

seeing you answer all these questions about the dark tower playing it cool when meanwhile you've just signed on to make an adaptation of it is actually ridiculously funny to me bc the whole time i'm just imagining you behind the screen typing away at your replies on here like 😃😃
Oh, I was grinning like an idiot. I've had the rights for a while now, over a year in fact, and I have been chewing through my cheek whenever anyone has asked about it. I don't know where we'll make it (I really hope we find a home for it asap), but it's been really fun to try to answer questions about it for so long without literally bursting into song

I do not aim with my hand; she who aims with her hand has forgotten the face of her father.
I can't do it!
I do not shoot with my hand; she who shoots with her hand has forgotten the face of her father.
I'll miss! I know I'll miss!.
I do not kill with my gun; she who kills with her gun_
"Shoot it!" Roland roared. "Susannah, shoot it! "
With the trigger as yet unpulled, she saw the bullet go home, guided from muzzle to target by nothing more or less than her heart's fierce desire that it should fly true. All fear fell away. What was left was a feeling of deep coldness and she had time to think: This is what he feels. My God_ how does he stand it?
"I kill with my heart, motherfucker," she said, and the gunslinger's revolver roared in her hand.
