If Veronica dies? IDK. I have a lot of thoughts on where Zacharuno fits in in terms of eligibility to take over the Emblian throne, but most those thoughts can be summarized by no. It’s a little more complicated than that though.

We know that there are a lot of royals. I forget where, and I’ll look it up and edit this bit tomorrow, but when Bruno’s name is first mentioned Alfonse talks about how the Emblian royal family is a mess. So I’m guessing that even if Veronica dies, there are a lot of other people with legitimate claims on the empire.

Plus, Zacharuno’s got a couple of strikes against him - one, he’s been disowned and banished. Two, his mother was a traitor (and possibly Askran, possibly Valentian, so possibly not even Emblian). Three, I don’t think he even wants to be emperor. So I don’t think he’d fight for it, and given that its Embla, and given that its an empire, I think it would be a fight.

Now, he’s got a couple of pluses. As far as I can tell, he is the last emperor’s first kid. Embla seems pretty gender-equal in terms of who can inherit, and its possible they’re also doing some non primogeniture or whatever the heck CKII calls it kind of thing. So being the first born might mean absolutely nothing. But, it might also be a bonus.

The second major thing I think he has going is this Dark God business. The Emblian citizenry loves Veronica because she’s out there being conquer-y and what not. Given that most the other royals aren’t out rampaging through Askr, it’s always been my thinking that Veronica and Zacharuno, while not the only royals, are the most affected, given that they are the closest to the bloodline or whatevs. At any rate if Veronica dies, the Dark God is going to lose a host, and with Zacharias being the next in line as far as the possession inheritance goes… I think if Veronica dies the Dark God is going to focus a little more intensely on locking down its next avatar. Which is a good thing for Zach as far as the emperor bit goes, because while I don’t think he wants to be emperor, the Dark God is another matter entirely. Given how much Embla supports the war-like leaders, and given that its unlikely they know about Zacharuno’s past of getting banished and what not, I think they’d love him as emperor. And I think those who stood in darkcurse!Zacharias’ way would not be standing for very long.

So I guess the long answer is, if Veronica dies, I don’t think Zacharias inherits the empire. However, if Veronica dies, I think he - or something very much like him - is going to end up with it all the same.
